Surely playing other games made things even clearer to me and am glad you came to the same realization with D2. Yeah I think this is just GernaderJake's video/pov repeated with all of the backlash and criticism of that equally valid here. Yes taking a break might well help you feel more positive (if that's what you're seeking of) and criticism may get more views even if you're adverse to said "negativity". However both are subtle or not so subtle ways of avoiding the many valid issues, and instead "Victim" - blaming (nb in quotes, in terms of consumer-blaming) rather than having of an honest look at the DEVASTATING MISTAKES Bungie choices made on an otherwise stellar or potentially stellar game. So, yeah, enjoy your break and your temporary high on return, but all those clangers are there ready waiting for you and everyone else. Those are REAL endemic issues that need real action and real steering of course to correct. Possibly Sony will end up having to do this for better or worse.

Really touching grass would mean to recognize that Destiny 2 is too expensive for what it delivers and stop playing NOW.
Instead he wants people to play less for the same amount of money, just like Gernader Jake. I begin to see a pattern here... .

What makes me cry sometimes is it wasn’t like bo2 or titanfall or other games from my childhood that were a blast and I remember only the best times. Cause for other games I just don’t remember when I stopped playing. They’re like frozen in a nostalgic part of my brain. So is destiny 1, but d2 isn’t. I’ve watched all my friends slowly fade away from it. My little corner of the destiny universe is gone. I will always remember my d1 days, I hope I never forget them.

Neither of you are being honest. There's no way you stepped away and felt that other games are doing much better, hardly, at all.

@@MarkisWillis - BINGO!!! This right here.
I am the first to say D2 has problems. Gameplay loop. Nickel and diming. PVP. Cheaters. On and on and on.
THAT SAID, all you need to do is look at the forums and whenever the next “can’t miss, amazing” game comes out people say they’re leaving for that game. (Helldivers is that game de jour)
And every single time within a month, the vast majority are back. Sure the new game can be fun and different and a solid investment. But pretty much everybody says “it ain’t destiny,” and can’t hold attention for very long.
I firmly believe Bungie is being really mismanaged right now and terrible decisions are being made to negatively impact thr game over and over. But the foundation of the game itself was so good to begin with, the underlying foundational gameplay itself is so much more satisfying than anything else on the market that over time, others just don’t measure up.
I say this as somebody who is loving hell divers and thoroughly enjoyed Diablo (for awhile), and had a lot of fun with Starfield. All of them were pretty and new and alot of fun to figure out.

Listening to this... It's making me realize why I stopped. I was forcing the enjoyment and had never realized it. Playing other games - ones I hadn't gotten a chance to because spending so much time in D2 - was so enjoyable.
Although, I don't think I'm coming back to the game. I burned myself out in such a cruel manner that it ruined it. I screwed it up so badly. The core memories of Destiny - 1 and 2 - won't leave. But the things that had happened a few months before... I think I realized that it was just time to stop.
I haven't touched D2 for months - four at this point. I think it's honestly been for the better. I'm not sticking around for playing The Final Shape, but I still enjoy watching anyone playing it.
Times and people change, and I got stuck with memories that just can't be remade.
Regardless of whether I still play or not, thanks for all the fun videos, Nomad. Will keep watching until the channel ends.

6:55 Really hit home for me. Having to be negative to put food on the table is not a healthy or sustainable way to go through life.
I trained for years to do a job that I ended up kinda hating. But I realised what really made me miserable wasn't so much the job as it was continually hearing myself complain about it.
Truth is, I think Destiny is basically fine. And it's not like there’s nothing to do... We're just bored of it at this point - AND THATS OK!
I've never understood the community's obsession with either "sticking with it" or "quitting Destiny". I've been playing video games for 30 years and I can't remember a single game I've ever "quit". I would just start playing something else. Some games I'd come back and play again - ocasially many many times - and others I'd forget about.
I no-lifed D1, met awesome people, and loved it to bits, but D2 I've dropped in and out of many times. Sometimes I'd obsess for a month, then forget about it and come back a while later. And you know what...? It's fine! You don't actually miss that much and you catch up again pretty quickly.
So yeah - if you're having fun with it that's great! You dont need to justify yourself to anyone! Likewise, if you've been playing for years and you're bored, that's natural; you dont need to uninstall - just try something else. It doesnt need to be Ride-or Die!

omg I think you sort of just explained what I think the core issue is with the way Bungie (execs) handles Destiny 2:
Players started chasing that "high". That became the core community of the game.
And then the game switched to a content model & structure matching this phenomenon of chasing past "highs".
And boom: recipe for the burnout machine.
Random joy, secrets & excitement have been replaced by routine, expectancy & reliability.
I can't remember when the last time was that I got a loot drop that I didn't know about in advance through a TWAB preview.
And due to the API, & the way social media algorithm works, any unannounced drop will eventually reach our eyes/ears ahead of time anyway.
I stuck around because of the lore. I've been reading the grimoire cards since the launch of VoG in D1 vanilla.
I loved when there were revelations to be concluded by piecing together different bits of lore, hinting at larger worldbuilding.
I loved discovering the mysteries of Destiny's universe.
But more importantly, I loved the conversations & speculations around them.
It's not that the mysteries are gone, but rather, they've been oversimplified now. You can see them from miles away, on conveyor belts, racing towards you.
Some story threads, that were part of the Light & Darkness storyline, have been pushed to the sides, to make the conclusion of the story line be just about the Witness.
The complexities & depth of Destiny's universe has been shrunk, & talking about it's worldbuilding is just not exciting to me anymore.
And that's sad, because none of the other games' worldbuilding intrigued me as much as Destiny's did, & I still haven't found a replacement.

It's definitely true that disconnecting yourself from online discussions surrounding anything you enjoy, will allow you to enjoy that thing for longer. And that's not to say that by looking at why it's actually bad, and agreeing with that it's bad, means that you're not thinking for yourself, and just taking other people's opinions. It's merely just a matter of multiple heads being better than one. So by staying ignorant of the issues, you'll come to realize them a lot slower than if you look up what the hundreds of thousands of heads are thinking and analyzing.
I think back to my first two years in Genshin Impact, my first gacha game. I had no idea what I was doing back then, and so, many others were ahead of me by a long shot. But I was still enjoying the game despite that. Only once I eventually did get involved in the discussions, learning the game faster, realize why certain things are bad, etc, did it affect my enjoyment with the game. I got burnt out faster, probably due to having gotten better at the game, and spoiling the fun of learning for yourself, in combination with being aware of more of the game's issues for long periods of time, with no improvements being made by the developers.
    TL;DR; Ignorance is bliss.
I think for future games, I'm going to ignore any online discussions, and just enjoy the game for myself, even if it's wrong. I want to see for how much longer a game can be enjoyed when played this way.

    • @GeoGyf

The thing is with gacha games, the story is the easy part. But at some point you need to prepare for the second season, since the game will get harder.
Unless you always want to do the optional content, which means using the meta or paying to get awesome units (if you are unlucky with your rolls).
But in this case the expectations are different (story vs optional content).
So gacha games, while very good, need to be approached with this mindset. What is your end goal, what are you prepared to do. For instance for Genshin, it can be the first area. Or the second or the third. In the end, your worst enemy is yourself, especially if you are dropping money into the game. Or you have an addictive personality, for example must collect everything or must conquer everything or you like to show off.
Online games that emphasize ginding (looter shooters like Destiny or Borderlands, hack & slash games like Diablo) need to be approached with the same mindset.
I dont know what you did with Genshin Impact that affected your enjoyment, but at least you learned something about yourself, what to avoid in the future (perhaps in a different game), or perhaps in Genshin impact itself.

Part of the issue with becoming a content creator, your favorite game becomes work and you wind up hating it/not enjoying it. Obviously Bungie has had issues with Destiny 2 for a long time now, but as someone who doesn't no life the game, it has never been bad to a point of "burn out" for me. I have about 700 hours on D2, but I also play other games throughout the week. I personally have never seen how content creators could play this game 8+ hours a day as it just simply doesn't(and has never) have the content to support that kind of playstyle and there really isn't enough good loot to grind for. While Bungie has sucked for several years now, I think a lot of this also falls on the creators who just no life these games and don't branch out. When you tie your entire brand to one game, you're going to eventually burn out unless you find a way to balance your life and habits away from the game. You do anything for 8+ hours a day and you're going to have burnout/get bored at some point.

Cataclysm and Pandaria were two of my all-time favorite expansions, contrary to what you hear, because I don't let others tell me what is or isn't fun for me. Which is also why I'm still enjoying D2 and loving having another extra long season. I have so much going on outside of video games that 3 months is HELL to try and get everything done and often I'll neglect things irl just to add a few more hours in game to try and get all the content finished.

The biggest reason I left was the story. I am so sick of them removing previous expansions/seasons, so I was very lost when I came back at the end of WQ and the start of LF. D1 base story was broken up, so when TTK came out with a solid story, I was so happy. RW in D2 was so satisfying (that it was a story, the story itself was meh) but I left shortly afterwards.
Second reason I left... the price tag to play the entire game. $120 for a full expansion experience? No thank you. The Battle Pass mech in Live Service games was the worst idea. Plus, most of the DLC is found in some other DLC you can end up spending $500+ because they were not clear on what is in each DLC. I just cannot stand it any more because I have spent more $$$ here than any other game I have ever played.

Its funny tbh. I started with Destiny 1 and consider myself a massive, MASSIVE casual. I quit Destiny 1 after the initial grind fest. Came back for destiny 2 initially and basically immediately quick back when there was a leveling system. I ended up coming back for beyond light extremely casually. I ended up day 1'ing witch queen after seeing the hype and pre-ordered lightfall only to quit before even actually starting the story for lightfall.
After that I thought I was done. It was always the grind that would turn me away.
After Lightfall I got into ARPG's like PoE and sunk in over a thousand hours into it. Recently took a hiatus from PoE and tried helldivers, and then from helldivers went to exoprimal, about 20 hours in warframe which led me back to.....
The thing about Destiny from a casuals perspective is that there really isnt any other pve shooter that feels as good. Not Helldivers, Not Exoprimal, not Warframe.
Trust me when I say I totally understand the absolute frustration and rage from the hardcore/end game players of the game (being I'm a hardcore end gamer in PoE).
But when you look at it from shiny noob lenses, from a newcomer, or just a fresh set of eyes, D2 is an absolute banger of a game. It just feels so damn good.
It really is a shame all the stuff that needs to be improved especially for people who want to main the game.
The model of the game is really difficult to pull off. You cant have seasonal content that feeds you bread crumbs in an ARPG and expects you to keep coming back with such an absolute RNG fest of a run.
Thats where a game like PoE shines. Yes there is extremely rare loot. But there is a trade system and there is ways for you to get the stuff. The "seasons" have you reset your character completely. There technically is an overarching story for the game as well even though you are resetting and making a new character every time.
Idk how to explain it. Like yes (even from my very own perspective) I know the end game for D2 has let a lot of people down. But man when you leave and come back to it as a casual you can truly appreciate the gunplay they have for the game. It really is a bittersweet disappointment of a game.
Bittersweet because you know the unequivocal potential, and where it solidifies itself in one aspect. But then you think about the other passionate dev teams of other studios, and how if they got their hands on a goldmine like D2 (Helldivers team, Larian, Fromsoft etc.) they would put their absolute all into it. They would add all kinds of new species, subclasses, lore, loot etc. Obviously the comparison is incomprehensible. I'm just saying you can tell that bungie as a company just fell to corporate greed and it shows in their games. Developers at the end of the day are at the mercy of the people that have stake in the company.
Reading up on the state of D2 (after having about 50 hours in the game this past week) its really so sad. The devs have been begging the overlords of bungie to allow them to fix the game to bring players back.
At the end of the day Bungie is just another corp in a sea of corps that decided to screw the devs, screw making a good game, and screw their fans that supported them in making them as huge as they actually are.

I think the biggest deterioration of my love for destiny came from playing and trying to justify continuing to play, PVP. The PVE in this game is incredibly fun, i like playing it with my friends, I love doing it, Raids are fun, dungeons are fun, GMs are fun, getting my triple hundy stats was fun.
Playing trials? Spending hours upon hours screaming at my screen, raging, getting mad, burnt out, tired, all for a ship, sparrow and ghost shell.
After getting two of the three, then the skimmer came out, I ended up deciding to quit trials for good, especially after realizing the reason why i ever flawlessed on my own in the first place was because of the "crutch" Weapons that the community universally loathes, I feel no satisfaction in what i did, i feel like i never improved, i just cheesed.
However, playing with my buddies in PVE is always nice. i'll love this game for that, and probably wont ever be burnt out.

Switched games around, found new communities new hobbies, new games to mess around in.
When I came back to my old "home" I didn't feel the same connection as back then, but I had fun again. I enjoyed my time in the game after so long!
The one thing that changed for me in gaming is... I don't get to involved in Communities anymore. Like you said: to much input from outside just isn't healthy for a relationship to a game.

  • @CRVSE
    @CRVSE 7 місяців тому +1

The big point is the "hyperconnection" of a game.
Even D1, which I just played by myself or with a few friends here and there. There are a lot more "good memories" of it than D2.
But if I'm truly being honest to myself, D2 has as many or even more (longer lifespan and playing on pc with friends that dont have consoles or had an xbox instead back in D1) than D1.
The deal is that in D2, youre far more connected than ever and it takes a toll. Fomo, metas, content creators with guides for everything, no mysteries, nothing. And, of course, the complaining about the game's problems, that reach a new level because of this hyperconnection.
Then you play another game thats less connected (or just new like helldivers 2) and everything changes.
Its just like how every game becoming a live service, or every game having battle passes and seasons, etc. ruin them. They all start to compete for your undivided attention or they will fail as a live service/batlle pass/seasonal game.
And time is a limited currency that we cant buy more.

My man, you're taking a coward's way out. If D2's criticisms were loud enough when it mattered, things wouldn't have come to this. There is no balance to be had when the issues that the concerned part of the playerbase voiced for years eventually dragged down the game and now threatens to drag down the studio with it. It is clear that if Bungie spent all the money D2 earned on D2, then D2 would have lived and thrived, but no, they wasted that money on developing 2-3 other games and then fired the people who earned all the money to begin with. The only right way for any person with integrity was to put your foot down and quit when it mattered, and never come back. By staying with the game even longer you're just helping Bungie's toxic management ride their way to the golden helicopter made out of Sony payouts (for the only successful business plan they executed in past 5 years: fooling Sony into buying their studio), and then watch as the rest of the devs lose their livelihoods as the studio sinks.
There is no middle ground here. If Sony doesn't fire Bungie execs NOW, they will leave Bungie only when there's no longer a way to save it. And the only chance we as a community have to effect that is to stop playing NOW, not after the final shape, NOW. Otherwise your cowardly "balance" narrative is no better than Datto/Reppo's aggressive toxic white-knighting that has allowed the execs to get the studio and the game to this point.

When a relationship is good, both sides benefit well. When it gets bad, that's where it will be tested the most. These past months have been eye opening for many players, that the relationship that they have with Destiny 2 has been toxic after all the time that they have been together now. I have been disillusioned to the beauty of Destiny 2 since season of the worthy and have remained a skeptic. All my feelings and conclusions were confirmed when lay offs hit, Final Shape got delayed, and Lightfall was a flop. Final Shape is pretty much the end of Destiny 2 and whether we wanted it or not, Joe Blackburn will leave after, much of the original Destiny 2 team is working on Bungie's other projects like Marathon, and seasons are turning into episodes which means content is going to wind down. I took a break from Destiny 2 and played Palworld and Helldivers 2, never have I ever had fun in such a long time before. Recently I have been getting back into Final Fantasy 14 and continuing on in the story and has been very refreshing and a better experience than before.

I don't really have anyone to game with, especially outside of Destiny. But Destiny has my clanmates who do get on every once in a while. So I would stay on the game so I wouldn't have to game alone. But eventually I couldn't do it anymore and needed to leave the game. And it was the best decision I could've made. I'm still working on it, but I'm enjoying gaming again. And with all of these new indie games being released, it's a greater time than ever to play new games.
Destiny is always going to have a special place in my heart because of the memories I have and the milestone it represented. But I think after The Final Shape, my time as a Destiny player is likely over. I'm growing up, and the game has grown up in a different way that doesn't fit me, anymore.

Pretty dramatic. Take a break if you feel like it. I've been taking a break from D2 but I'm pretty hyped to jump back in next week for the update

taking a step away makes me not want to play like it's an addiction that i overcame and don't really see its value anymore.
this really isnt a good situation. i love destiny a LOT but like smoking i cant really say that i want to do it because it hurts my lungs to play. big tobacco (bungie) needs to take the addiction out of their smokes and make something that players will want to smoke.
also i could take this analogy further and say warframe is like vaping. it's not healthier but like its a choice you got and it tastes pretty good at least (idk ive literally never msoked before just seen it from family)

You sound like you left a cult. It's okay to say Bungie sucks and it's time to move on.

Playing a game for that long will def make it become stale. You just have to let the good memories remain as they are and not try to force new ones I feel.

Hey Nomad. Long time viewer here. I just wanted to say that I empathize with a lot of what you said here. I've been playing D2 as my main game for way too long and I've felt it was time for a change. I always hoped that they would bring things to a definitive end, but their episodic model seems to suggest otherwise. If I'm going to get the perfect ending to Destiny that I've always wanted, I'm going to have to write it myself. I do believe TFS is going to be my final DLC, and I'd like to bug all my old Destiny friends to join me for one last fire fight. Together, I hope we can finish a story we started 10 years ago. Here's to the perfect ending. The one we choose, not the one we're given.
Thank you for your words, and I hope these words find you well.

I mained Destiny since the D1 beta came out, and finally gave it up a couple weeks after lightfall came out. I still jump on time to time to send out clan invites (site never works for me) but that's about it. I just get inundated with 7+ pop ups about all the same shit that I've already played and done, plus whatever latest expansion they're trying to sell. I can't get myself to play it anymore. The same tedious seasonal grind. The dripfed story. The constant rotation of doing X activity X amount of times per character, per week. The games foundation is solid, the gunplay phenomenal. They just aren't innovating enough, and it's been that way for years. I had enough and moved on to other games, permanently.

I agree with you here, but having more than one game is nearly impossible with budgets. Since every game has a battle pass, is live service, etc etc, if you wanna play more than one game and get the fullest experience, the cost is too high. I could spend $100 for the year and get every battlepass, exotic and all other content through playing. But now I'd have to do the same with every game I play. It's too much

you guys know its.. okay to go play other games, right?? you dont *have* to be a slave to that rise and grind mentality. New content? log in, get some hours, then go play something else.

This is my first video I've seen from you, but I truly appreciate this message, and this can apply to so many things outsides of gaming and Destiny as a whole, it's just pure simple living, I've found myself mentally stuck on that same depressive, cynical loop and this video was a nice breath of fresh air for me today, thank you for making this and sharing your experiences, I hope you keep achieving that fulfillment for as long as possible. I'm hoping I can do the same for myself with trying to find a career that won't leave me feeling like a husk of a person anymore lol.
