I've got a couple of these; fantastic engine, bulletproof, Toyota got the power to the ground with excellent transmissions (minus the front diff ADD issues). They don't like towing, and they can feel a bit thirsty in town, but if you're not looking for a truck to race, anything with the 1GR is usually a solid bet if the previous owner has at least done any maintenance at some point.
My mileage on the 1grfe is 258000 km. It's a 2005 fortuner. I frequently tow 3 tonnes. I've already replaced a fan belt and a water pump at 230000 km. With my experience it is a reliable powerful engine.
my 05 trd offroad has 430k. ive done my valve cover gaskets lol. ive never seen a 1gr need a headgasket unless it was overheated, or poor maintenance. im never selling this thing lol
@markharris7723 every 1GR-FE uses 5w30 mobile 1 makes OEM toyota oil and has the same specs toyota brand filters are not expensive - that's what I've been using for 320k in a 2008 4runner since it was new and it runs very smooth and quiet
I have a 2006 Taco with the 1GR-FE at about 130,000 miles I opened the engine because of a oil leak at the timing cover. I also had a clatter in the engine for years. While I had the cover off I replaced some components to include timing chain guides and the chain tensioner, the tensioner I removed still had the release pin in it from the factory which was not removed, this was the cause of the clatter 😊. Also to note that the oil leak started afer I switched from regular conventional oil at 70,000 to synthetic. This taco is a workhorse, I tow a 4,700Lbs camper all over the west from Oklahoma to Arizona, Colorado etc. Great vehicle.
2006 FJ Cruiser with 1GRFE and automatic trans drove 425,236 miles with no problems or repairs until a head gasket blew on cylinders 3 and 5. I am choosing to have a local Toyota-only shop do a complete rebuild instead of gamble on a low-miles used engine which are hard to find or buy a new vehicle. I already have a payment on the 2023 4Runner I just bought with 27,000 miles. Soon I will have two 1GRFEs sitting in the driveway again. I love these engines!
One other thing not mentioned was leaking engine cover where the engine and head meet. More a manufacturing defect not enough sealant. 1500-2000k to do at a shop.
I have a 2003 Prado Grande, 312,000Ks did rear main seal at around 250k n thats it. I have just ordered new injectors n coils because these are still the original factory ones n only replacing them because i think they have served their purpose! Did alot of towing early on, not so much these days, but it is lifted, 35s, draws etc still goes well with 13.2L/100Ks standard driving around. The 1GRFE will look after you, if you look after it!
Just got a 4th gen runner. This engine is amazing even at 245k miles. Not a power house, but built to last with maintenance. Cant wait to do my first oil change!😂
Mine has just started loosing coolant in the reserve bottle level. I'm looking for the leak. @ 180 000 kms. hope not the head gasket, hey where is the pulse width module on the 1GR-FE ??
Maybe try a new radiator cap (or high pressure radiator cap) my 07 FJ had a perpetually low reserve coolant level and I couldn't find a leak. I used bars stop leak and noticed that it solidified at the radiator cap, so I put in a high pressure cap and the problem has gone away. My reserve coolant level now stays between E and F
I completely agree with you when you said ticking noise , I have 2008 LC200 ticking noise is there since I bought it 6 years ago , any suggestions to reduce the noise ?? Im also having Carpon smell which I can’t find any solution so far

355000 miles, orig water pump, starter, ac comp, ps pump and ign coils. 5-40 rotella every 5000 mi. No oil between changes.

08 Taco here, im very happy, and it's reliable
Change the oil every 3500 km and the engine will go smoothly till you reach 1M km
Awesome Toyota bulletproof reliable engine! 💪

@@shiddy.That’s not true. My 1GR-FE calls for 0W20.
@SavagelyMediocre wow that's a lot different than I thought - what's the engine in?
thanks for the correction ... always check the cap
@@shiddy. 2018 4Runner. I was surprised also.

How much is the rebuild costing you?

2008 4Runner 4wd SR5...350,000 miles....only thing that has gone wrong was the manifold cats at about 320K miles. solid as a rock.
Its a workhorse. Knock sensor and the wiring for it is a PITA.
I like that engine a lot
I’ve got a 1GR-FE, hit 140,000mi and currently have the engine apart for a head gasket failure between cylinder #5 & 6

1GR’s tend to blow head gaskets at higher mileage. I wouldn’t be surprised.

how bout 2GRFE?
Lexus GX 400? I’ve never seen those or heard of them. Were they not sold in the US or something? I thought All GX’s were 470 or 460
I don’t believe they were ever sold in the US
South America, saoudi arabia...depends the market...
Thanks for the great info!
I have this engine with 190k on a 2007 4Runner. Running great! Some service/maintenance, but just your standard stuff.
Just purchased the 2014. TRD sport. 70 k
180,000 on a 2005 4.0 all stock with no issues!
Never had a problem with the gaskets I got 350k miles
Yep, my toyota engine's headgasket is now leaking oil into cylinder 6.
