    Mine with 160k miles, synthetic oil changes every 4k miles, always let it warm up, 93octane... And the damn bytch engine rod knock out of nowhere. A truck I always took care of it, and just shyt itself in front of my house. Smoke out of the exhaust, horrible clanking from the bottom end.
    It had oil at the moment when it failed, no CEL, no low oil level light, any lights. Ran two different OBD scans, no ERRRORS, unreal, but if I run the engine, all hell break loose letting me know with all forked up rod knock noises.
    I sincerely cried, I have owned it since new. The funny thing I was going to sell it this same week it happened, as if the truck gave me a big finger for trying to sell her.

      @@chanoleyva8584 almost forgot about this chat. I was making preparations to sell the 4runner when this happened, just had received the title from tax collector and was about to post on FB a for sale, and then the horrendous sound.
      Dump some fresh engine oil and manage to drive it in into the garage, the smoke kept coming out the exhaust, but the noise did not come back. Did an oil change, gave a prayer and said here goes nothing, and gave it another crank and drove it around the neighborhood waiting for a rod to spit out the back of the block. Another loop around the block, the smoke cleared out and suv ran fine. Already three tanks in, a few visits to redline and all good so far.
      I am still spellbounded by the whole issue because it sounded bad. I could blame it on a loose wrench, but how the smoke out of the exhaust. I have searched everywhere ans have not found any loose wrenches, parts, whatever, something floating around the engine bay.
      Gave it some tlc, new tires, new valve cover gaskets, and new pcv valve. Checked all spark plugs, in excellent shape, no carbon deposits in the valves,cylinder walls still show the cross hatch.
      My son was with me the day this happened, and he is also cannot understand, maybe it did not want to be sold.
      I would swear someone played a joke on me, so I checked my security cameras and nobody touched the vehicle since the day before I drove it. I have had it since new, its all 160k miles has been all across the US, cost me 40k including the loan interest.
      Cheers

    Petr, I know this project is not a "money maker" for you but, I am curious about what caused this engine to fail. Earlier this year I purchased a 2014 Tacoma TRD Off Road that is beautiful, with the 1GR-FE, and it came with 155k miles on the odometer. I have been performing the maintenance myself as much as I trust myself to do. Today I changed the PCV, not knowing all of the history of this truck. I haven't heard you mention the PCV as a maintenance item, but maybe I just didn't see it yet. I want to say your channels and content are inspiring and you are a blessing to many. I still have not found the recipe for sauerkraut that you mentioned, but I will continue looking. Take care my friend!

    • @waynes.2983
      @waynes.2983 Рік тому +1

      It does not use shims. It uses buckets of various thickness. In order to do a valve adjustment you have to remove the camshafts after measuring clearances & calculating the size of the buckets needed.
      It is a royal pain in the but. I just did it and had to remove & install my camshafts 3 times to get everything correct & each time removing the cams requires using plastigage to measure the camshaft bearing clearances as well. We wish these engines used shim over bucket like the older ones did.

    Peter if I might ask A question? I own A 2015 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road with the same 1GR-FE engine. I bought it used in 2017 with 34K miles. I had read prior about the engines tendency
    to develop oil leaks so I immediately switched the oil in it to 5W30 full synthetic high mileage from Mobile One to hopefully mitigate the potential for leaks. I read in several places that this oil
    was good for 10K miles between changes, and so I was changing the oil every 8K-9K miles never letting it go to the full 10K. I have since learned that this oil also needs to be changed every 5K instead of 10K. I put 40K miles on the truck whilst changing the oil at this extended interval, I'm now changing oil at 5K. Do you believe that ive damaged anything in the engine? like the oil rings themselves? I also run A engine decarbonizer once a year through it since ive bought it. It still has all the noise, and gets the same bad fuel mileage that the 4.0 is known for? Thank you for time, and any info.

    • @sonofliberty92
      @sonofliberty92 Рік тому

      I don't believe you damaged anything so long as your engine doesn't consume oil. I also have a 2015, it gets around 18-19 highway and around 15 or 16 around town. I change my oil every 3000 miles. Mobil 1 advanced full synthetic.
