    The 1GR-FE is an excellent motor. When serviced normally, it will last a super long time. Super reliable engine. Whenever owners skimp on maintenance, then that's when problems arise. No fault of this engine at all.

    I only defend when people talk 🐂💩 As you know I’ve had 3 of the V6 prado’s, the first one now is running around with over 400 thou on it now. It’s only people people who get on face book and bag out the V6 because, one, they have never owned one and comment about how thirsty they are, or the motors are 💩 etc, or 2 the motor has gone bang and you ask them have you had it since new, the answer is no. So then you ask them about the service history, oh yes it’s got a full service history the car yard said, so you have every receipt for the 10k or 6 month services, um no there are no log books. Then I say so you have zero history of the cars scheduled servicing but you want to bag out how bad the V6 are 🤔🤔. A lot of people again who have never owned one comment on how much better they are over the diesel. I’ve also had a diesel Prado to compare. You can’t tell me that the V6 is not cheaper to service over let’s say a 200 thou period especially in the 150 series of both the V6 and the 3.0L . Injector replacement on the D4D what 2500 to 3k, transfer pump, $1500, timing belt, there’s 4 & 1/2 k to start with, some thing you never need to do in the petrol Prado because one they don’t have a belt, they don’t have a transfer pump, and the injectors are known for doing 300thou plus and more with out replacement . You pay more for the diesel in the first place to buy, generally if you watch the fuel cycle here in Sydney at least you can buy petrol cheaper at the bowser than diesel, I only ever used genuine parts on all my.prado’s. If Toyota bought out another V6 I would have updated to another one but I fortunately they didn’t. Will wait and see what Toyota bring out next. I’m not anti diesel, but people who have never owned a petrol Prado and make a load of 🐂💩 comments about an engine they know nothing about are the ones that make a 🍆 of them selves. And yes I’m defending the V6 again as you new I would.

Tell me I’m wrong that the person who posted this video and is a well known mechanic and a good one at that who has mentioned about having the injectors replaced before 200 thou ?? Tell me I’m wrong that in the maintenance schedule in a 150 diesel that you are required to change the transfer pump at 150 k ?? Tell me I’m wrong that the V6 doesn’t contain a timing belt like the 3.0L does that needs replacing on the 1kd at 150k ?? Then along with that is the recommended replacement of water pump etc while the belt is being done to save on maintenance costs from having to do it before the next belt change is due. Tell me I’m wrong that people who have never owned a petrol Prado carry on about how thirsty they are to run yet when asked if they own one they don’t but theirs mums dads brothers uncles friend has one he said it’s thirsty

    I compression tested all cylinders prior to purchase and they were within roughly 5 PSI.
    Anyway, I remember actually standing beside the engine once just to see if I could. No power steering, no AC rubbish.
    I repaired the rust inside and out and Re sprayed in a Dulux industrial protecting paint white and black in the boot/towbar.

    Whoever did the job should be shot😢….
    I have a 280k v6, a new Prado 150 diesel, can’t bring myself selling the v6 after 6 months ownership of the new one… only thing I hate about the v6 is fill up time, expect 15-18l/100km if you do mostly 40-60km road - highway touring with full load - 11-13l/100km… towing 1.3 ton camper on 80-110km/hr road 17-19l/100km
    I would change the oil every 5000km if doing mostly town or even shorter distance if you do a lot sub 5km trips - there must be a lot crankcase condensation- short trip doesn’t help burning the water vapor off…

  • @aron2199
    @aron2199 Рік тому +12

    so i think we can all agree that the V6 is bulletproof but ONLY if it has had regular oil change. I would say Diesel has few more expensive service items to pay if you look at the life cycle of the engine - injectors every 150K for 1KD and associated items puts about $5k out of pocket every 150,000km - but that's obviously offset by fuel saving (at the current price trend, difference is about $650 saving every 10,000km in my scenario) - So theoratically still cheaper to own a diesel if you could buy a new V6 and new diesel and say an ownership span over 300,000km

    • @Fourby4Diesel
      @Fourby4Diesel  Рік тому +1

      Try 200,000k
      Actually closer 4K
      Difference not that much really v6 requires things that diesel does not
      Stay tuned
      Diesel great fuel savings in low range and towing about 1/2 that’s what it’s for. On road 10lph vs 14lph is the comparison 40,000k a year if you have 4x4 and a life 😉🙏✌️
      Otherwise drive the hybrid Corolla 😉🙏✌️

      @aron2199 Рік тому +5

      @@Fourby4Diesel Ant, i agree that V6 (at the current fuel price differential) over a 300k ownership is more expensive.
      aside from the usual servicing items I only ever change iridium spark plugs every100K- what other things are required of V6 you talked about?
      I would advocate people who are a 2 car family where one doesnt get used too much buy a cheap (low range) electric for all those school run and short trips and leaving the Prado for longer drive and big trips - best of both worlds really - we are constantly amazed how comfortable the 16year old Prado 120 still is on big trip even compared to the new 2022 Prado (new better but only by a little bit)- that V6 is still silky smooth with great overtaking power

    My previous white 120 V6 (04 GXL Manual) which my wife mostly drove developed a radiator leak in summer & she overheated it which warped the heads. Got it rebuilt here in Perth with sourcing another set of heads that were recon'd locally. The block was tested & bored for oversize new pistons. Total cost was $10k but that included new radiator, new injectors, new coils, new fuel pump in tank, new MAF, new water pump, new Thermostat housing etc etc and it ran sweet with more plenty of power (very noticeable).
    However we ended up selling it as my wife wanted an Auto (more user friendly for her in city traffic) so i upgraded to a late 07 Black 120 V6 120 GXL and just absolutely love this one even more.
    Did lots of mods - upgraded Kings/Bilstein suspension, black D-Slot dynamic H/Duty rims, Shortie Extractors, custom S/Steel exhaust with highflow S/S muffler replacing factory muffler (awsome note) , Rear diff Harrop E-locker, swapped out the headlights for black Binnacle LED headlights, LED Spotties, tailights swapped out for more modern LED units, aftermarket black sports grille, Rear slideout draws, dropdown rear door table, side awning, Redark BCDC dual battery system, redark towkit, Clarion headunit with GPS etc. This Prado is spotless including underneath with zero fluid/grease seepage as that is the way i like it and maintenance to the whole car is the key. I only use Penrite fluid products on all my cars
    These quadcam 120 V6's are awsome engines if well maintained ( helps that i have my own workshop with a hoist & very mechanically minded). The later models are better - 07/08/09

    I'm conflicted when watching this video, on one hand, I totally agree with buying a vehicle with full-service history, but on the other hand, the video infers that an owner can't service their own vehicle and still sell it for decent money at the end of the day. Servicing a car is not hard, it's not rocket science and as Anthony shows in many other videos it all can be done easily DIY. Without going through a mechanic you have no proof of service so what do you suppose for all the people that do their own servicing?

      Mate once warranty is up I’ve serviced all mine at home. I use genuine parts, I keep the receipts from Toyota along with a stapled copy of the eftpos machine. I write on the recipe the date, the klms and throw it in the log books which I keep in my office at home not in the car so that way they don’t get lost and if some one breaks into the car there’s no books to flog or use as a fire starter. I’ve sold all 4 prado’s privately with no questions asked in regards to the servicing and my proof of servicing. I also use the camera at certain intervals and screen shot off the phone and keep in the books. The bloke who bought my last 150 off me last year was very impressed. My wife’s merc I don’t touch as it still under warranty as well but being euro build I get rid of them before the warranty’s up. The only thing I get done in workshops is transmission flushes or any major work like head on the diesel Prado I had.

    Never buy a secondhand Ladycruiser. They are mostly driven by women who think maintenance isn’t needed around the time warranty runs out.
    Pro tip:
    If you keep your car for a long time, change your oil every 5000kms (cheaper mineral is fine) and oil filter every 10000kms.

      You can get into certain areas to give you a rough idea but you can’t get one in to check the pick up in the V6, the diesel is directly over the sump plug hole. Only was to check the pick up is as Fourby4diesel has mentioned

    So I'm looking at a 2015 FJ Cruiser which looks fairly tidy but has a few 15,000km (9,000 mi) service gaps and one 20,000km (12,000 mi) service gap (but still 6 months because highway kms). It currently has 120,000km on it.
    Would you recommend avoiding this and strictly searching for a vehicle with 10,000km intervals or would it probably be ok?

    Just purchased a 2015 4Runner 6 months ago. Started noticing a noise that matched the RPMs. Took it to the dealer and got quoted $6k to replace oil pump, timing parts and water pump. 160,000 miles on the vehicle. Heard the same thing on the service. “Everything has been serviced”.

    However we ended up selling it as my wife wanted an Auto (more user friendly in city traffic) so i upgraded to a 07 Black 120 V6 120 GXL and just love this one even more
    Did lots of mods - upgraded suspension, Shortie Extractors, custom S/Steel mandrel bent exhaust (awsome note) , Rear diff locker, swapped out the headlights for black Binnacle LED headlights, LED Spotties, tailights swapped out for LED units, Rear slideout draws, dropdown rear door table, side awning, Redark BCDC dual battery system, redark towkit, Clarion headunit with GPS etc.
    These quadcam 120 V6's are awsome engines if well maintained ( helps that i have my own workshop with a hoist & very mechanically minded). The later models are better - 07/08/09

    Normally I'd jump in to defend the V6 too, but this is all user error, bad maintenance and a dodgy rebuild. Glad I got mine when I did, still had low K's with full verifiable history.
    I've said this many times, but I'm certain the reason the V6 sold so few toward it's end in 2017 (locally), is because nobody knew it was an option, and nobody was told how poorly suited the diesel was for short commute driving.

    Yes 1KD is reliable, but it is too much of a work horse. It is lazy and vibrates like crazy. Sound is nothing short of a Toyta Hiace from 1988. Some people can not live with that. I pesonally would choose 1GR over 1KD everytime, but if you are a man you forget Prado and go for big brother the real land cruiser with V8! That 4.5 diesel is just lovely engine and sounds so good. Can pull and has torque and still reasonable gas mileage.

    I've got a petrol version LC200. The main reason is the climate. Every year it hit -40 Celsius minimum. Diesel freezes up. Also, diesel availability of sufficient quality outside the handful of main cities is low. Different circumstances, different choices.

    I have this engine in my hilux, Had it for ten years and when it rolled over 300K I spoke to A mechanic about changing the timing chain, he told me not to worry about it until a light came on as it was a big job... Not sure how correct that is. Haven't been back to them.. Learned about changing coolant the hard way in hindsight.

    • @Stevegrande1
      @Stevegrande1 Рік тому +1

      No reason to change a timing chain in the V6. Generally only if the engine has been neglected would you need to change the timing chain and that would probably be around the same time you would do a rebuild due to neglect. If serviced well there would be virtually no reason to change it
