  • Jim took this video while watching the local Amish move a building from 4 miles north of Lakeview Michigan to 4 miles south of Lakeview.
    True horsepower! Here are local Michigan Amish workers using 8 Belgium horses, then 12 horses, to move this cabin up a snow covered slippery hill in the middle of the winter. I think they are speaking German? Or, maybe an Amish dialect, not sure.

    Have always admired the Amish and how they can do everything they need to without TV.
    They are like our pioneers and are preserving something of great importance. Their example may show us how to keep living if there us an EMP or something.

    I have seen Horses like these in Belgium. They were originally bred as war horses for heavily armed mounted cavalry units, and were used in battles like Waterloo. When you stand next to one they tower over you. They are truly impressive.

    I just love Draft horses and mules. I’m told it’s rare to find a mule that you can’t ride. What a mix would be a draft horse and donkey. These horses work as hard as the Amish.

    • @dragonflymeadowscoachingki8696
      @dragonflymeadowscoachingki8696 2 роки тому

      Some people prefer mules - the sterile offspring of a horse and an ass. I live in a community where there is a good sized group of Amish and also one 20 miles north of us. These folks are old order Amish and seem sold on Percherons or Belgians. I’ve been here close to 30 years and don’t remember seeing a Clydesdale in use or a mule. I have driven Belgians before and broke right they’re obedient and easy going. It’s nothing to see these horses weighing in at close to a ton. That’s quite a deer blind they’ve got there.

    wow I love this. We need more horses and less cars. We need whole towns and cities where you can just choose horse power only. Of course would need someone to watch them when you nip in the store and back out but I would love to move somewhere where i could do this. And I would love it if I could teach my boys to pull, though they are 21 and around 18, humongous drafts. The more technology evolves the more I just want to go back in time.

    • @jacobwillow050
      @jacobwillow050 2 роки тому +1

      Does one horsepower equal one horse?
      Not quite. It’s a common misconception that one horsepower is equal to the peak power production of a horse, which is capable of a maximum of around 14.9 horsepower. By comparison, a human being is capable of approximately five horsepower at peak power production.
      Instead, Watt designated horsepower to be equivalent to the amount of power that a horse can sustain for an extended period of time. However, there are many different variations of horsepower.
      Unlike the measurement of, say, time, the exact definition of horsepower can vary depending on regional variations and the specific machine whose power is being measured.
      Mechanical horsepower, also known as imperial horsepower, is the measurement invented by James Watts and is approximately equivalent to 745.7 watts of power. Pferdestarke, also known as PS or metric horsepower, is a similar measurement developed in Germany that’s equivalent to 735.5 watts.
      Horsepower for electric motors is equivalent to 746 watts, while boiler horsepower, which is used to measure the output of steam boilers is more different still, with one boiler horsepower roughly equivalent to 9,810 watts.
      Belgian horses are able to pull tremendous weights. At the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, a team of two horses in the Heavyweight class pulled 17,000 pounds a distance of 7 ft 2 in (7,700 kg a distance of 2.18 m). The team of Belgians weighed 4,800 pounds (2,200 kg)
