Thanks for the clarification on the armored arm guys. I'll strive to do better in future videos and anything which could have actual historical context for being ill ensure to do my research.
I should point out that the reason why young Guts is wearing leather armour compared to the other mercenaries isn't because it's heavy-that's a myth-it's because leather armour is cheaper to make for a child than metal. Plus, why would you spend money on a child who is more than likely going to die in his first battle?
Realistically he'd be wearing cloth armour. Leather is far more time consuming to make and also not better than simple cloth for protection when hardened.
One detail I love about the Golden Age arc is that Guts actually trains to get progressively stronger with his sword, adding wooden panels wrapped with rope to the hilt of his blade to make it heavier and harder to swing. It explains how he's earned his BRUTALLY JACKED physique, rather than the classic anime trope of "character is muscular because he's the protagonist".
It's a nice detail that kid Guts' helmet is open, while he's teenager's armor has a close helmet, reflecting hos Guts became a more closed off, anti-social teenager.
@Ricardo Santos exactly, at most he could use a buckler but it would get in the way of using the forarm as leverage for his changeup strikes, having the arm armored makes up for it slightly but its his agility and tools that make the buckler an option that may only hinder him, besides he used his armored left to parry but always uses his sword or a nearby object to actually block, and yea right arm unarmored for more flexibility, but left armored because it faces the enemy is perfect for an agile tricky fighter like guts who uses everything around him for defense
@@edwardgaines6561 from a character stand point. I could not see guts using a shield. He recklessly throws himself into battle without a thought for his safety.
Armored left arm makes sense since most of people are right handed, so that's where the strongest hits would be aimed. It's a historical fact, one of many, that Miura incorporated
Him being more armoured during his one year travel/quest also helps reinforce that he spent a lot of time with a weapon smith. Damn i should've compiled all this comments into one.
The grimace Guts has on his face when Casca loses her mind again in the newest chapter is an amazing example of this. You can see so much pain in only two panels.
The details within the Miura's usage of Gut's sheath also conveys Guts' almost demon like appearance and anger with it looking akin to a demon's tail. This could be seen particularly when Guts was fighting his way up through the tower of rebirth.

RE: The Band of the Hawk emblem pin. I now realise after uploading this that the pin was probably introduced as a part of the hawks uniform after they got introduced in the midland army. Whilst my other points could still be valid (Griffith had the hawk emblem on him before they joined the midland army for example) That is probably the actual reason Guts wore it from the Zodd chapters onwards. Oops.
left hand armor is used because as two handed weapon fighter he swings, generally, from right to left so his left is exposed more often, thus protecting his left is the way to go
To me Guts' sword sheath looks like a tail. Everyone sees Guts like he's some sort of demon and the sword sheath dangling below his waist is another nod to this.
thw left arm armor also serves to show us that his habit of bracing his blade against his left arm when blocking some heavy strikes has been a part of his combat style most.of his life, and was not something facilitated by the cannon arm alone, but rather the arm itself coincidentally just fit his fighting style.
The sheath honestly has some interesting changes from being a simple strap to a sling, to a strapped sling, all so carrying on the back and drawing is not cumbersome, but later with dragonslayer im pretty sure he has a magnet at one pint with the sling
Im in the middle of a reread right now (just hit the lost children chapter) and I too only just now realized Guts' armor is slightly different than the original black swordsman design. It's such a subtle change to the lower half that it routinely went over my head lol
Guts' right arm is armorless because he's right handed and needs less weight to be faster. Also, as that arm is his offensive arm, he needs armor in the left one as a defence. Just look gadiator's armor as a reference
I really hope berserk gets a proper anime. Like bones / madhouse quality. I just finished the 40th volume (the last one) RIP Miura, your masterpiece is one of the most influential pieces of fiction of consumed.
Your video's have really improved a lot lately! It's amazing, just how much detail there is in Berserk! Sometimes you can just stare at the pages for minutes and still discover new details. A lot of video's on Guts feel very similar. This was something refreshing. One of the more overlooked aspects of him.
Another reason Guts wore only his left arm armored is because it was probably his brace arm, and that there wasn't too much a point to pad out his right one.
I'm already excited to see what will be in the next video! 😀😀 I've been thinking recently that Guts hardly ever removed the Berserker armor in the Fantasia arc (or since he got it at first, honestly)... And I wonder if this is an indicator that he needs to feel protection for himself, Caska and the rest of the group, and that despite the harm it is making to him he doesn't feel he's enough to protect those who he cares. I think Guts will now need to learn to not rely on it and interact with people without his psychological barriers... his first encounter with Caska after waking up is a clear indicator of that. And I really hope this will be addressed in the future chapters: he'll have to break out of his shell to bond again with Caska and hopefully be intimate with her again. Also, it's an incredibly small detail, but I noticed that the first time the Moonlight Boy appeared, he was seemingly playing with Guts' cape and armor, but I wonder if he was actually trying to remove it! It would make sense, as I think he is a very powerful force of good in the story.
6:41 while I don't disagree with the points made, having only his left arm armored is something that was done historically, as that was typically the arm that was in front and most exposed to danger, while the other one was in the back where armor wasn't needed as much
I think you'll love this detail. Check his belt from "the innocent"-era of Guts. It is an incomplete brand of sacrifice that is so well damn put there to foreshadow the coming events. 3:45

I don't think it's leather. His last armor is made of steel bands. Contrary to what most people believe, armor doesn't really weigh you down, if you're trained to wear it. There's lots of videos on UA-cam about this.
His armor as a mercenary tended to have steel yes but it seems to be mostly lacquered cloth similar to roman armour or resined leather, its more flexible and actually almost as strong as steel but less than half its weight and guts always seemed to favour agility over amrour strength until the apostles showed up when he started adding more steel to his armor after every encounter
Your videos have been much appreciated. I've been wanting to catch up on Berserk and your work has been a great help! There's something I noticed since watching your channel. Miura foreshadows a lot in his character designs, that's obvious but I see details on Casca's and Guts' clothing. The sheath of her sword and the buckle on Guts' belt as a child both have similarities to the Brand of Sacrifice.
2:35 - "... comPare from Previous designs allows them to Pick uP on details that they Previously could have missed." I recommend a pop filter. I (somewhat seriously) thought somebody was breaking into my house during that bit.
Better production in general is something I need to invest in. As the channel is increasing in viewer base, I need to better my equipment to support that. I'm gonna invest in one before the next video for sure, thanks for the feedback.
Speaking of different swords i've always wondered why he didn't keep the cool sword he used in the Queen assassination mission and the Griffith duel. On a reread i noticed it actually broke when he was training with Erica in the waterfall.
An actual in lore reasoning for guts having one arm armored could be that guts is using a riskierparrying technique in the case that he ever needs too as there are historical uses of extra bulky armor being used on an arm in the case that someone couldn't afford a shield
The idea that 15 year old Guts had any hope in him is pretty silly to me. He's a maniac at that point in his life, throwing himself against his enemies without any care if they wound or kill him as long as he gets them too. He's little more then abuse and killing at this stage in his life, because thats literally all he's known. His whore of a mother died before he could get memories, he's stuck with sword for hire Gambino and the sexual abuse caused by him as his early memories.
I'm re-reading the manga right now, and couldn't help but pay attention to Guts's Band of the Hawk clasp more closely, after having watched this video. I don't thinkthe clasp has anything to do with Guts's character development, though, it seems to me like the Band of the Hawk, despite already having that name, didn't have their own symbol and flag before Griffith got knighted. Immediately after his knighting, we see the clasp and the flag for the first time. Anyway, that was a great video :P
To corroborate that, it's notable that neither Casca nor Griffith himself had Band of the Hawk clasps before the knighting either, and they, too, incorporated them to their outfits at the same time Guts did. As a mercenary band, this sort of thing was probably unnecessary, but became needed when they were integrated into the actual Midland army.
Usually in mercenary armies you have to purchase your own equipment. You don't get handed a uniform. However a mercenary army can obtain equipment in bluk by pooling their money and hiring a bunch of smiths to complete orders for them. This results in the equipment being cheaper overall because the mercenary leaders will usually negotiate a better price for the army men. Young Guts wearing leather armor is indicative of him not being able to afford anything better but as he grows and gets a better salary he upgrades his equipment. Also keep in mind that since he is a small boy his stuff needs to be custom made for his size and frame and therefore can't be mass produced in bulk. So while the rest of the merks around him wear more "standardized" armor, his is more custom. It naturally follows that it is also more expensive, so even as a mercenary he was probably barely scraping by.
Are you gonna compare Guts from the Berserk Prototype? I think its a good choice for Miura to take away the eye patch from the prototype for 2 reasons. 1. Guts is a combat pragmatist, and has no need for an eye patch that is mostly atheistic. 2. Having no eye patch, allows Miura to express emotions better on Gut's face, especially since Guts can still cry from it. (plus it looked silly) I also enjoy how Miura gives Gut's pointy ears and more pronounced canines, and how his Black swordsmen outfit, has some nice shout outs to his fallen Hawk comrades (especially Judeau).
I'm pretty sure miura added the iron hand for a guard, guts never used a shield and always had to use the sword handle or the blade, so the iron hand was added to be some type of shield, it didn't really have any idea behind it, just a little detail, and miura probably liked it so much, that he couldn't see guts without it just how you said, or at least I think so
@CW AMVS Well the grasses thing is just a meme but they did have glasses as early as the 13th Century and by 1300 they where already being sold in decent quantity
The armor on the arm might have been for the reader to be already used to guts having something on his arm, so when he did lose in in the eclipse it wasn’t too much of a shock or change to the character design for a general audience that was unfamiliar with the story at the time.
Loved this video because it explains one of my favourite things about Miura's storytelling, seeing years pass in some mangas/animes without characters even changing the color of their clothes annoy me more than it should.
Berserk is only the second manga I read after The Promised Neverland. I didn't really liked it the first time due to the "lack of life and colours" I felt in it. But Berserk drawing quality and amazing character designs was so insane that half way through, I literally forgot it was colourless
It's not that complicated. Guts clearly just dumped all his souls into Strength and Dexterity. The chump Who am I kidding I do the same thing in literally every Dark Souls game......
My favorite part about Berserk is how symbolic it is. For example how Miura accurately shows how futile and vain all our hopes and dreams are and that no matter how many people wish for it, some things may never come to pass because where the fuck is volume 40 goddamit I'll die before Casca even says "Hey Guts."
Thanks for the clarification on the armored arm guys.

I'm pretty sure miura added the iron hand for a guard, guts never used a shield and always had to use the sword handle or the blade, so the iron hand was added to be some type of shield, it didn't really have any idea behind it, just a little detail, and miura probably liked it so much, that he couldn't see guts without it just how you said, or at least I think so
Quality 👏 content 👏
Cant wait for part 2!
Nice use of the yakuza kiwami 2 final boss theme.
He uploaded? Nani
Guts in his one year away from the Hawks probably was his peak mental state shown so far. He may be reaching solace nowadays though.
anyway i can get that pic used at 3:43
I'm the only one who loves the actual Guts design?
Except for that patch of white hair, yeah.
@@edwardgaines6561 Oh man thats one of my favorite parts of the actual design since it makes Guts look even more mature and experienced
@@Greideren I'd rather Guts have a badass beard, like Kenshiro used to have.
I like Nuts more and more as he gets more additions
People don't like current guts' design?
the lack of grasses in the series has perplexed me
@CW AMVS r/wooosh
@CW AMVS Well the grasses thing is just a meme but they did have glasses as early as the 13th Century and by 1300 they where already being sold in decent quantity
@CW AMVS its still a woosh my friend...no need to get mad
not just character design, berserk has amazing character development and story.
The armor on the arm might have been for the reader to be already used to guts having something on his arm, so when he did lose in in the eclipse it wasn’t too much of a shock or change to the character design for a general audience that was unfamiliar with the story at the time.
what about plumed hat-Guts? (from the time he kills Adonis if I remember correctly)
When will the hiatus be over😭😭😭🤯😭🤯😭🤯🤯
never
Antonio Donati this the reason I sometimes hate being a berserk fan😭😭😭
We must burn every copy of idolmaster
True that I'm pissed I got into berserk
Imagine how vagabond fans would feel
I want it go back to a previous point ...or beyond the state they are now
Armored/leather patted Guts is my favorite design from the Golden age arc
Loved this video because it explains one of my favourite things about Miura's storytelling, seeing years pass in some mangas/animes without characters even changing the color of their clothes annoy me more than it should.
Berserk is only the second manga I read after The Promised Neverland. I didn't really liked it the first time due to the "lack of life and colours" I felt in it. But Berserk drawing quality and amazing character designs was so insane that half way through, I literally forgot it was colourless
cant wait for part 2
FUCK I THOUGHT THIS WAS AN OLD VIDEO,I NEED PART 2
Where can I get that picture of kid Guts with his white scarf ?
Manga scans.
I kinda miss guts having a helmet I always thought it was pretty cool.
Well, now he has cool magic wolf helmet, I guess that counts too.
He missed the fact that Guts had a different sword when he fought Griffith during the Golden age to leave the band
Miura be looking at berserk video comments giggling
It's not that complicated. Guts clearly just dumped all his souls into Strength and Dexterity. The chump
Who am I kidding I do the same thing in literally every Dark Souls game......
Kyle S Strength and Endurance lol
Bad idea if you're running that build in 2.
@@pyrojack8230 I learned that the hard way
My favorite part about Berserk is how symbolic it is. For example how Miura accurately shows how futile and vain all our hopes and dreams are and that no matter how many people wish for it, some things may never come to pass because where the fuck is volume 40 goddamit I'll die before Casca even says "Hey Guts."
