Berserk has hit a key milestone recently with Casca being cured of her insanity. Whilst Chapter 355 marked the moment where she spoke with her companions for the first time since the Eclipse, Chapter 359 brought us the moments we have all been waiting for.. Her conversation with Guts, and this is what I would like to discuss today:

Okay, so I didn't expect this to blow up. I've changed the title and thumbnail to something less spoilerific (whilst keeping in spirit with the video) I do apologise to those who are waiting for the volume releases. Dumb as shit error on my part and I don't have any defense apart from I should have known better and I'll do so in the future. Hope you enjoy regardless.

I find so nice that Spired chose to change both things and apologized. It was half of a "spoiler" for me but i already knew from somewhere else. I started the manga this month because it was on my must-read-list for too long. So I didn't think about it as a huge inavoidable spoiler in UA-cam's feed neither, but it's true that it was a mistake if you're a thoughtful, considerate person, as Spired showed to be by that apology.

it should be pointed out at 21:34 how guts blends in with the rest of the apostles. he is not any darker or brighter to contrast them, he just blends in. at first i didnt even notice him and thought they were all just apostles. it took me almost a minute to notice guts was there too, and i think thats a very important detail to point out

this has always been the contrast of Skull Knight and Guts within the story and that is regardless of allegiance or morality Guts and Skull Knight are still very much Darkness incarnate.

I think your comment about Guts feeling sadness rather than rage at not being able to see Casca is poignant. Miura began this series with the simple idea that he wanted to draw a very angry man. Everything else in the series flows from that, the initial idea of the Golden Age is that it sets up why Guts could be so unbelievably angry when we first meet him. But in this latest issue he had a more mature response to this melancholy situation. And when Casca's PTSD kicks in completely at the end of the chapter because of Guts we get some of the most painful, emotionally complex drawings of Guts I can recall. I'm not sure what emotions he's feeling, but anger is totally absent, instead he's a mix of sadness and guilty and hurt. Which shows his immense character development throughout the series and especially after traveling with his new family for so long. Development physically represented by every scar on his body. He's gone from a man who existed only to be angry, to one of the most complex characters in literature.
Every time I think about this chapter tears start showing up. I was so happy and yet I knew that it couldn't be that easy. Seeing guts in that state just broke my heart
Yeah. Guts feels pain that can’t be taken away without having Casca better again.
He obviously felt fear, pain, sorrow, depression, resentment, guilt, confusion, worry, and helpless.
Seeing that really shows how broken and vulnerable he was in that situation. He can’t do anything to protect or help the only person he cares about beyond what he sees as his well being.
He is content with her being Casca again and around his friends but still being unable to do anything for her he sees his ordeals as unfinished. He may have to come to the conclusion of forgetting about what Griffith did and focus on Casca but maybe seeing Griffith is what Casca will pursue instead of Guts
Sadness is just what's left when your body realizes even anger is killing it. You're left with nothing and become a robot, mechanically choosing to ignore reality, or go insane. It doesn't matter how much of a Buddha you are. Everyone has a limit. Anyone can be tortured into a roaring madman... There's no "mature" way to deal with knowing you and your family are damned to Hell... by your wife's rapist. The only sane response is to adopt a Zen mindset and use brief bursts of anger for fuel. Like Guts seems to already be doing with the armor... Like so-called 'enlightened' people do in real life.
Isz sadness actually is deep despair. A feeling of dread, helplessness, and there is nothing you can do to make it better at that moment.
It consumes your mind and pulls you into a reverting state where you hold yourself back and contemplate on what causes your sorrow.
Either you put yourself down, walk away, do nothing, or fall into deeper despair.
Anger wouldn’t be present or in anyway associated with your sadness but what hurts you in making you sad is what will stay and linger in your mind as you have to deal with the turmoil that plagues you

Nearly put a pencil through the neck of my 'bully' in 6th grade (he was *strangling* me), which earned me nothing but disgust and fear from the whole school for two more years. Because I wasn't sorry, in the slightest, and dared to still act like a victim.
I've only ever felt 'empty' when cortisol burns through everything else in my brain. The second it recharges, I'm burning again. If I try to stifle my sadness with fury too soon, I exhaust myself into fatigue and/or vomit saliva. True despair is just void. When nothing is left inside or out. Despair did nothing but make me a weak, wallowing target, waiting for death, and I hate it more than anything.
Weight-lifting lets me use anger or "work through it," healthily. Meditation helps me stay focused and appreciate pleasure, but doesn't make me immune to rage. It's in me. At least it's something.

But it's his very being - voice and all - that triggers her PTSD because he's a living reminder of her suppressed memories of the Eclipse. The last she properly interacted with him before losing her sanity, he still had his arm and eye. Everything about him is still the same Guts, but there's traces of the Eclipse all over his body. Also, the last she heard his voice, he was screaming in anguish trying to save her by cutting his arm off. Everything and anything reminding her of the Eclipse is a trigger, and Guts is the most glaring evidence that that horrible day wasn't just a dream.

Well yeah, but she was kinda ignoring Griffith at the time as he was at that moment, coming to terms with how Griffith was crippled and then the eclipse happened.
You can’t forget when she last saw him years before Femto, how real time readers st the time saw Griffith, and then how they saw Griffith chapters before femto entered the mix.
Kinda like finding a loved one is crippled; some people ignore those and confide in something else and that being Guts at the time

I’d definitely like to see my boy Guts have a happy ending, but since I’ve watched Devilman Crybaby, nothing has come close to giving me that gut wrenching reaction since, and I’d like to be able to experience hat kind of feeling again. Maybe I’m just a masochistic weirdo.

Shortly before childhood trauma came knocking on the door for my now ex-girlfriend of 3 years, we were an adventurous and happy couple, seriously planning our future together. I mostly shut off from my own social life, or life in general when suicide attempts, schizophrenia sympthoms and total isolation began for her. I saved her life, carried her screaming & unintelligible in public and chased her when she was pushing everyone away very many times, among other things. Overtime she became mostly unable to socialise/go out/have fun at all and I stuck through it with her, helping her find motivation to keep up the treatment.
She left me when a group of "friends" from her new workplace introduced her to drugs, even though she kept texting me she loved me just to cut contact short because "she was living a new life" throughout the whole of next month. Even though I wasn't a culprit in what broke her after we got together, she still saw me as a part of it and connected me with the pain. There wasn't even a roadblock for us to party together/return to having fun like we did in the first place. I was told by a psychologist that sometimes, especially if very close, when you help a person through mental illness/trauma they start to subconsciously associate you with it and ultimately begin to resent you.
The panel in which Casca sees the eclipse behind Guts felt so very personal & uncomfortable to me, like someone violated my space. Reading the whole story of how he fought his heart out for her absent self just for her trauma to kick in when looking at him in the end was weirdly therapeutic to me at the end of the day, made me feel like I wasn't alone
Stuff like this makes me think the Monk life may not be so bad. Never dated so never felt the pain.
And this, makes it hurt more.
Maybe being my lonesome maybe be more of a blessing.
Man, I started crying when I saw Guts' face when Casca was screaming. I can't even imagine how he feels knowing that the woman he loves is terrified and screaming just by looking at him..... Poor Guts and Casca.
I really hope they can hug each other one day, after all these (20) years
It will never happen. They don't even have chemistry anymore. They both have to move on, and find their own paths. Change happens, people don't like change. But people have to adapt and adjust. Friends and lovers are temporary. Nothing stays the same.

Basically, Casca is back, but she hasn't actually faced the horror's of the eclipse yet. She still needs to face her demons.
But she's attached deeply to the one demon that torrents her Griffith when she fjnds out her baby and Griffith are one I truly see her breaking with no return

@@toby2524 I don't think that's probable. I mean, 20 years to see her healed and then break her again? Probably not the best route for the development of a character. What I do see her doing, as a result of her insanity, is using the behelit and sacrificing her comrades (Guts will probably survive this)

I don't think we are going to get a happy ending I don't think casca survives to the end and in turn guts will go berserk probably kill/seal away whoevers I his way and have to live the rest of his years alone in despair
Long story short. Miura loves emotionally torturing the readers and Guts.
I just read the whole manga in like a month. I cant believe people have waited 21 years to get Casca back. God damn I feel you all
Not an important detail, but I think it's worth pointing out that Farnese, who has basically a crush on Guts, is completely supportive towards Casca wanting to see him (as she thinks). She's the one to point him out to Casca when he's hidden behind that tree. Obviously she knows how much they both love each other, and _I_ love how there's absolutely no jealousy there. Farnese cares enough about both Guts and Casca to let them be happy together. Which is. nothing like the Farnese we were introduced to in the beginning, her character development is honestly amazing

It's obvious at this point that the moonlight boy is their stillborn child, and this actually ties strongly into real myth, in real world mythology, it is said that Fairies are born from the souls of dead children, Guts' and Cascas son is basically a fairy since he could climb on the branches of the world tree. So even tho Griffith has his body, he still lives on as a fairy.

Im starting to think that all this waiting and suffering is intentional, and its like a meta-narrative from Miura (what an asshole)...life is suffering and yearning and pain and then you die and its over. I started to read this manga when i was 18 years old, 20 years later and im still "on the boat".
Man, i knew people who were fans of this crap and they are dead now, and im like wtf im still doing here?

I don't think Casca will mind much when she remembers Guts' moment of weakness. Recall when they were having sex in the Golden Age, Casca told Guts that she wanted "a wound" that she can say Guts gave her. There is no other instance where Guts wounds Casca other than that moment of vulnerability. So if and when she remembers that, it'll less likely put distance between them, in my opinion, and more likely contribute to both of them healing.
Caska telling she "wanted a wound that only Guts could give her" was just her poetic way of asking to have her cherry popped.

@@willasrock1 Actually, he does use "Kizu", which translates to wound, scar, scratch or laceration. Considering they were talking about her scars just moment before this, I think the meaning is more geared towards my initial assumption. Plus, Casca is shown as Guts' sword just panels afterward. If she is Guts' sword, then the meaning is clear, that she will help Guts in his emotional battles and gain "scratches" like a sword.

To be fair, these turns make sense. He was warned restoring her sanity wasn't going to be pretty and not necessarily going to coincide with what he expected. Furthermore, Guts himself hasn't ever really gotten over what happened at the Eclipse because those demons hanging over him are what have driven him ever since. He's not a catatonic mess like Casca was left as, but he's been a broken shell of a person literally too angry to die-- basically as long as the Beast of Darkness exists, he's still got problems to sort out, and well, we know how the Beast sees Casca... So it makes sense that Casca, whose really just had her mind restored and not much else, sees him as a walking beacon for a massive pile of horrible repressed memories even though we can tell she does not want to, but he's pretty much radiating a tainted aura. This is going to be a issue that can't get resolved until they both properly heal from the Eclipse and not just bury the wounds under a pile of other things. But persevering through such things are what Skull Knight admires about humans, and Guts in particular.
gtf234 I believe it’s Guts od that gives off the impression of Casca’s nightmarish memories of the Eclipse and everything she seen as Elaine.
After all he is far different in being a darker character with all he has been through and the Berserker armor just adds more onto that for Guts to be a big presence of darkness and all the evil Casca/Elaine have faced throughout their entirety

While he's not just a giant ball of hate and fury at all times, he's still a very different man post-Eclipse down to his very essence, which Casca clearly is reacting to upon sight. Guts has been corrupted and darkened by it, and if I hazard a guess likely will remain that way so long as he's branded. So this not being a glimmer of hope for the future for him should have been seen coming a mile away really. I vaguely recall Miura once saying years ago Guts probably will have a happy ending coming to him, but he's going to suffer and struggle through hell and back to get it.

Guts is still my favorite character but Farnese is defiantly my second, and yes, whens he teared up after being praised, got me as well.

I don't know about ya'll, but I see 2 things happening for Guts from this point on.
1. He falls into a deep depression and puts down the sword temporarily.
Who could blame him at this point? He's fought with every piece of his being for years now. He's slowly accepted the Hawks dying, the fact that he's outclassed by the God-hand / Skull Knight / Possibly even Zod, and that the world as he knows it will never be the same. I'm sure a part of him wants revenge on Griffith still, but I personally believe his rage / hatred / fear have split into his Demon Dog personality, which is now symbolically or/and even literally attached to his Beserker Armor.
Yes he has a new group that he's slowly grown attached too, but I truly believe Guts looks at the group as more of a thing he brought around for Casca, not himself. Now that Casca is scarred with PTSD and mental trauma for possibly life, what really does he have left to fight for? Unless he takes an interest in the plight of humanity as Skull Knight does, I don't see Guts adopting a larger world-view. Fighting for Casca was really his last motivation in life aside from Griffith.
2. He succumbs to the Demon Dog / His Hatred Alter Ego / Split Personality. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if his Demon Dog personality doesn't prod him from the inside, showing Guts how all is for naught, and that Guts might as well give into his hatred, as his compassion and humanity still didn't change much. Logically I'd see this as the most likely step. After all, it might not be shown, but from the art style in the last few years, it really seems that Guts is on the breaking point. It's as if the fights with Guts in control are just him going through the motions, as if he 'ought' to struggle on. At some point you gotta think our man would have to crumble, and I'd think this is the crack that'll do him in.
Now I'm sure they'll be able to bring him back around eventually, possibly with the help of the skull knight. Other than that, I don't see where else Gut's character can go from this point, other that possibly a drunk. (He's earned it to say the least lol)

I honestly need to know. Did anyone else get teary eyed like I did when I saw Casca saw guts and started screaming. I felt all the pain Guts must have felt and I just felt all the tears run to my eyes for him.
Something to keep in mind. Every time Skull Knight appeared in the manga we reached a crescendo to an arc. Which means come next chapter events will begin to unfold that take us into the next set of events for the narrative on a grander scale. It just sucks that he is appearing now of all times. Casca still needs time to heal and I really hope it isn’t cut short by actions made by Griffith or Godhand. But we all know eventually they will have to meet again. Part of me suspects the Godhand will betray Griffith because ultimately Femto used them for his own gain. And Falconia is a perfect proving ground for another sacrifice right now. Maybe we will finally get the backstory on his relationship with Void and him being Gaiseric in a past life. The information provided there will be crucial to understanding the motives of the Godhand. Which is probably the utilization of sacrifices to sustain their own existence.
great theory and im sure falconia will become a battle ground for a final battle i doubt the rest of the serie will be small fight because according to miura berserk is 7/10 finished so there no time for that the sacrifice of falconia will be where all the characters and side characters plots and sub plot be settled depending on the connection between them

It's going to break my heart when she remembers her baby. And even more so when both casca and guts realize what has happend to him with griphif.
But the author wants to convey the reality of trauma and deep depression. No matter how far you go, the wounds never heal. They may scar and fade, but the lingering memory of the pain will haunt them forever.
And with support from those you care for or care for you, give the opportunity to face the pain move forward if possible.

I love it. I don't know, it just looks softer and more refined? It gives the illusion that they're in a fantastical-like environment right now, which they are.
It looks to me like the quality of detail has gone down a little bit, the line art has become softer and it has become a bit too “sweet and sugary” for Berserk standards. Still top notch as far as artwork goes, but considerably less gritty.

Slight correction: the demon child DOES appear in the Elaine memories two-page spread. Far right, right above Isidro and Puck and right below Guts. Admittedly the scans make it hard to make out.

I feel like there would have been an amazing scene at some point where Casca tries to embrace Guts. The love and bond they share may be enough to destroy the thorns on her heart, symbolizing that love and support may be enough to break the trauma.
Just a thought, at least I'd hope that would be the case.
I found really sad that casca remembered judeu's death.
I mean the last time we saw the other members of the hawk they were either fighting or already dead. With judeu we saw each agonizing moment as he died on casca's arms (I cried :D)

What i'm afraid of is that Casca will be deceived into thinking that the Guts is responsible for the Eclipse. It came to my mind as I saw this panel with Guts surrounded by Apostols.

I would like to add something i noticed during cascas sparing with the veykins. In the encounter of the third one she cuts into his left armpit. Very close to the place she stabbed guts way back at the waterfall before their love scene. The veykin also wears the same shoulder and hand protection guts wore back then. His strike with the spear is blocked by casca in a somewhat close fashion to how guts blocked her blows back then by moving his head aside and blocking very close to the swordhandle. I could be interpreting way to much into this but i assume miura aimed for a callback to that scene. Even the very fist block she uses is so very like a prominent one during the fight against adons 100+ men. I would even go so far as to propose that the second veykin represents adon. If you take a close look at the axe head shown from the side then you might spot a resemblence of tudors rhino helmets. Again maybe a bit far fetched but i could not help getting lost in callbacks :)
To think people in real life died never reading this chapter awaiting such an event

I think Casca's mind regressed into a child because it was her own way of trying to save herself from becoming evil or even more hurt to herself. I was always uneasy around people because alot of fake friends I had ,so after they dramatically left me for their own selfish reasons I was in deep anger and distrust for everyone and also deeply traumatic. It was her mind and feelings which is gaurding her heart from the trauma as she said " she felt broken after griffith did what he did", symbolizing that Femto was the nail in the coffin for everything else that was happening in the eclipse because he took himself away from her. All I am say was she built a defense because she didn't know how to handle all trauma so she protected herself from feeling her own feelings. The thorns around the heart is further symbolism of that. It is herself trying to defend herself from her own feelings because as a child as we remembered she was better off when she didn't know Griffith. It may be hard to understand, but it makes perfect sense when you think of the concept of this.

Recently I re read berserk pages before eclipse (the part where they fell in love with each other especially) I thought of it a lot and couple days later I saw guts face... I’m not gonna lie, it hit me right in the heart. Seeing my favourite character struggle through all this long year to only be rewarded with this. I cried a little when I tried to imagine his pain. I hope that was the saddest thing miura could do, because guts needs to heal.
