My favorite feature of Guts changing design is his expression. By the time Falconia has raised and they got to the land of Puck, Guts does not look angry anymore. He is sad, tired, destroyed and almost delusional about the idea of Casca coming back to her senses. There are a few panels when he talks to other people and smiles, but you can clearly see that he has been damaged physically and mentally. That makes Guts for me more than the muscular protagonist of the 80´s, but more of a real, tangible consequence of what truly means to follow "The Heroes Journey".
Despite the struggle that he endured and the fact casca cant look at him due to being reminded of her own ptsd it does however beg the question that guts did inevitably achieve his goal he did bring casca back from her regressed state and that in of itself is beautiful because it is an indication of both his will power and determination as well as a honest depiction of loving someone unconditionally.
The panel of him having lost weight was really hard on me. I always loved to see him beeing the most confident, strongest human there can be. Starting from this point, just looking at his face right there tells you so much about his inner struggle. The journey has taken a toll on even the strongest human there is and I was honestly pretty damn sad when I saw this

I like how Miura drew a parallel, between the arm being cut off and Casca being penetrated. We can only assume that Casca's pain was on par with Guts' amputation.

I'd say Guts' neck being branded signifies how he supported the Band so much, he was its base and actual key figure in keeping it stable - a neck supports the head - the very thing that functions the entire body.
I would like to point out two other things: First, the fact that the brand is easily noticeable and therefore, in a way, readily available clues in on Guts constantly drawing from the events of that day to fuel himself forward while Casca has her brand hidden near her chest similar to how she buried deep within herself the events that happened that day. This makes the choice of the brand being the door to little Casca, her soul, going back inside the Casca doll before she "awakens" even more significant. Second, the fact that the streak of white hair happens after the first time using the berserker armor is also significant because it shows the change in Guts' character due to Schierke. She pulls him away from the complete darkness within himself and comes out with a streak of white displaying his decreased reliance on the darkness within himself.
I hope Miura gives Guts a happy ending. Out of any fictional character, I feel he more than deserves one. But still though, this is *Berserk* we're talking about... 🤗
I remember reading somewhere that Miura said somewhere that he wants Guts to have a happy ending since he feels like he deserves it. After all, Berserk is no a story of how hard and unfair life is (unlike those who tried to copy Berserk's narrative) but one of how you need to overcome hardships in order to be happy

Something really cool about the Black swordsman Armour is that after Godo restores during the Conviction Arc it gets new shoulder pads,very reminiscent of the Berserker Armour. I wonder what a Magical Armour made by Godo would be like. The Smash Cut from Guts getting a new upgrade to a Apostle being cut is also used in the Berserker Amour first use.
I loved the Femto and Berserker panel comparison, but it made me very sad to see the Golden Age and Berserker Guts panels. Life takes everything from us (body and mind) till we cannot cope and die.
Some of the Apostles are named but it's a kind of blink and you miss it deal. Borkoff (the one who bites off Guts arm) is named by Locus in the war against Ganishka if I recall correctly.
I also think that the white streak in Gut's hair caused by the Berserker Armour not only represents the stress it causes, but it also represents the tiniest streak of hope. Guts wearing black signifies his mental state. He is a broken, hopeless man. This tiny white streak could represent the tiny chance of victory the armour represents, the only shred of hope he has of standing against these supernatural monsters. He just has to go through huge amounts of physical and emotional stress to use it. Which brings me to the question, is there a character in fiction with a life worse than Guts?
Guts is always changing and that last point shows how it's not just evident in his armour or weaponry. In his youth, he's lean and toned up but as he stays with the band of the hawk he pretty much becomes the size of a body builder. Then, as in the last point, you see him pretty much emaciated
Actually when Guts is presented in the panel looking similar to Femto at first glance, his dark armor was set against a brightly lit background, with attention drawn to his eye and mouth. To be able to see clearly instead of shapeless targets, to be able to speak instead of roaring like a wild animal - it was a triumphant moment, of Guts' humanity and tranquility, no matter how little, overcoming his own rage and bloodthirst with Schierke's help - unlike Femto who was surrounded by darkness and Apostles. Doesn't hurt that Guts looks like medieval Batman either.
14:18 the contrast different of those two panels are the backgrounds. while both cloak in dark/black armor with such animalistic design, Guts was in white/light background as the context of him & Schrieke managed to control the beast of darkness. It was a more hopeful/positive panel compare to Femto that seems to rise from darkness itself. Also, such a minor details with how Guts literally got locks of white hairs after doning berserker armor. It really gives that such a struggle & strain feeling, how guts kinda sacrifice a portion of his life if he keep using berserker armor. Take notes that a sudden change of white hairs in such short time actually IRL associated with overwork, a very high stressful mind, & somewhat a big trauma. Just take a look at IRL "white hair syndrome" & how bombing victims in WW2 got sudden white hairs.
I love the portion of the story right before black swordsman takes place and the way it talks about men who slay dragons, which is such a perfect allusion to Thus Spoke Zarathustra.
Keep in mind that by the Fantasia Arc, Guts is only 21 years old. Going through he Eclipse, fighting the Apostles and wearing the Berserker Armor have aged him at least 20 years.
Amazing video as always! I think you should've added more of the physical toll that the Berserker armor has inflicted on Guts. In Volume 33, it was shown that Guts' eyesight has begun to blur significantly and his sense of taste has also been numbed.

we need guts and casca's relationship part 2 done, if it wasn't already. we also need your input on the moon boy and his connection with Griffith, since we have been given new information, and how it works, how it plays on mythology and various factors you can fit in to the video.
What a journey he had, he had people mess his life up pretty badly. First his foster father then Griffith. It just happened to be at times when he thought things were going not so bad. Like with Gambino, first he gives him ointment to help with his scar then he sells him out to Donovan right after. Then he came back for Griffith and not long after saving him twice, Griffith marks him and his friends (including his gf) to be sacrificed. Because of these betrayals, he became more and more ruthless. Before Donovan happened, he struggled to kill one man. After, he had no trouble putting a crossbow in his mouth and shooting him. Before Griffith incident, he felt bad about hurting kids. After, he was not afraid of putting an entire town of them in danger if it lured out an apostle. He’s not this ruthless anymore tho because he has a team that has his back. Even keeps his berserker armor on for emergencies all the time to avoid another eclipse from happening.

One of the best things I like about the Berserker armor: The way it's first shown, just sitting there, patiently, waiting. And also, the point where he uses the cannon in his arm against Grunbeld, you can see his false hand seperating from his armor and swinging to the bottom of his arm.
I cannot get over the fact that the way in which he lost his arm was out of voluntary desperation to save the woman he loved from a vile and disgusting act. And I love the fact that his design changes throughout the story whether it'd be important story beats or the passage of time. There is a lot of effort and great detail put into Guts' design. I aspire to create something as awe inspiring as Kentaro Miura. I respect him as an artist and story-teller. Rest in Peace
14:35 When I read manga I go pretty quick, but when I read Berserk I take my time especially here. I remember reading that chapter over and over and how sad it is.
It’s odd. Looking at the Berserker armor now, after so many years, all I see is crocodile scales interlocking to form the layers. Makes it more animalistic, untamed, ...deadly.
I think it's telling that what the texture of the Berserker armor seems most reminiscent of is a dragon, particularly a dragon's scales. Pairing that with his Dragonslayer sword reminds me of that saying, how even the strongest materials can be broken when struck by themselves. With your point of, if Guts can wield the Dragonslayer, what does that make him, I think it ties together that Guts had to push himself into something no longer humanesque in order to achieve his goals. In a slightly more stretched connection, it's interesting that the dragonlike armor is what he dons when his goal becomes 'protecting his treasure' rather than revenge.
You compared Femto to Guts in Berserker armor and pointed out how similar they look,but I think all similarities end there. Griffith didn't become Femto to protect anyone,he didn't care what he would become,he just wanted his dream,his kingdom. Guts doesn't want any of that nor he ever did,he always fought to see another day,for himself and for Casca and his new friends. My point is,Griffith gave up his humanity,while Guts doesn't want to lose his.
You missed a prior point in the video. Erica asks Guts why he wears black. That is because his enemies are in pitch black as well. This dialogue is a subtle wink to Nietzsche's famous quote "When you stare into abyss...etc." As the Beast of Darkness predicted, Guts *may* become a monster to defeat Griffith.

Agreed, but by donning the Berserker armor, Guts is jeopardizing his humanity and will possibly have to sacrifice his own humanity. Certainly not the same selfish thing Griffith did, but it is somewhat similar in that both men are giving up their humanity to achieve a goal. A selfish, evil goal in Griffith's case, and a selfless goal by which Guts ironically is rediscovering his humanity through his journey and companions.

Guts' goes from the most basic from of armour (helmet and breastplate. Even extremely poor soldiers tried to get some form of chest and head protrection) to full plate which is the most advanced armour one can get. Add ontop the interal cannon and the added superhuman abilities and its more like power armour
I think the Brand's placement was perhaps random for the most of the Hawks, but it came apparent as it was more of a burden and a top his shoulders, a parallell much drawn from Atlas' burden of the world on top of his shoulders, and Casca's on her intimate and feminine parts.
The translation you showed in the dragonslayer backstory segment is WAY different than the "bandofthehawk" (fan)translation I read years and years ago. Who translated the version you showed? I'm guessing a major manga translation company?
Guts is willing to sacrifice just like Griffith. Willing to slowly go berserk and kill everyone around him (including his loved ones) to reach his ultimate goal. This video blew my mind when it showed Guts and Femto side by side. Berserk is so subjective. That's what make it so great.Its so HUMAN!

Hey question for lore buffs, is the reason that Guts can wield the Dragonslayer a result of the fact that he exits in the interstice? I recall a character mention that those who reside there can more easily manipulate the material world, or something along those lines.
the main reason as to why Guts is able to wield the Dragon-slayer is not due to being in the interstate, but due to his use of over-sized swords since childhood, his muscle structure was groomed to specialize in wielding large swords. And he can't be the son of an apostle, if he was he would have much more demonic characteristics that should be noticeable and a far greater ability to act within the interstate much earlier in the story. We could say that guts, given his size and facial features, that his parents were probably from two different places, given his mother was part of a tribal clan. And when you look at it like that, and the fact his mother was hanged from a tree with others, he may be the son of one of his mother's tormenters after having been tortured for some time, before being hanged. Miura will have to go into greater depth with that to prove otherwise.
@Whipper of Merchants dude what you said is right, but you forget that this is a fantasy action comic: the author can make a few exagerations (like the sword being THAT big) to make the action more epic. But I don't think this affects the story (i.e. Guts being demonic), just a metaphor for Guts' willpower.

I love this little detail: When Guts delivers the final blow to the boar apostle, He didn't even fully step out of the building so he SMASHES the sword through the door and cuts the apostle in two in ONE SWING. Talk about power.

Something really cool about the Black swordsman Armour is that after Godo restores during the Conviction Arc it gets new shoulder pads,very reminiscent of the Berserker Armour. I wonder what a Magical Armour made by Godo would be like.
The Smash Cut from Guts getting a new upgrade to a Apostle being cut is also used in the Berserker Amour first use.
Gritting uses others life to grow stronger but guts uses his own.

I loved the Femto and Berserker panel comparison, but it made me very sad to see the Golden Age and Berserker Guts panels. Life takes everything from us (body and mind) till we cannot cope and die.

Some of the Apostles are named but it's a kind of blink and you miss it deal. Borkoff (the one who bites off Guts arm) is named by Locus in the war against Ganishka if I recall correctly.

I also think that the white streak in Gut's hair caused by the Berserker Armour not only represents the stress it causes, but it also represents the tiniest streak of hope.
Guts wearing black signifies his mental state. He is a broken, hopeless man. This tiny white streak could represent the tiny chance of victory the armour represents, the only shred of hope he has of standing against these supernatural monsters. He just has to go through huge amounts of physical and emotional stress to use it.
Which brings me to the question, is there a character in fiction with a life worse than Guts?
Guts is always changing and that last point shows how it's not just evident in his armour or weaponry.
In his youth, he's lean and toned up but as he stays with the band of the hawk he pretty much becomes the size of a body builder. Then, as in the last point, you see him pretty much emaciated

Actually when Guts is presented in the panel looking similar to Femto at first glance, his dark armor was set against a brightly lit background, with attention drawn to his eye and mouth. To be able to see clearly instead of shapeless targets, to be able to speak instead of roaring like a wild animal - it was a triumphant moment, of Guts' humanity and tranquility, no matter how little, overcoming his own rage and bloodthirst with Schierke's help - unlike Femto who was surrounded by darkness and Apostles.
Doesn't hurt that Guts looks like medieval Batman either.
Hope guts doesn't start looking like Griffith when he was tortured but I know miura is pushing in that direction
That won't happen. Grifith had no friends only tools but Guts has a FAMILY and a reason in life
14:18 the contrast different of those two panels are the backgrounds. while both cloak in dark/black armor with such animalistic design, Guts was in white/light background as the context of him & Schrieke managed to control the beast of darkness. It was a more hopeful/positive panel compare to Femto that seems to rise from darkness itself.
Also, such a minor details with how Guts literally got locks of white hairs after doning berserker armor. It really gives that such a struggle & strain feeling, how guts kinda sacrifice a portion of his life if he keep using berserker armor. Take notes that a sudden change of white hairs in such short time actually IRL associated with overwork, a very high stressful mind, & somewhat a big trauma. Just take a look at IRL "white hair syndrome" & how bombing victims in WW2 got sudden white hairs.
Even after loosing weight Guts still looks hellishly shredded. His physique is incredible.
I love the berserk armor guts it fits his mental state so well with how detailed his face is and can tell that he’s so stressed and tired

I love the portion of the story right before black swordsman takes place and the way it talks about men who slay dragons, which is such a perfect allusion to Thus Spoke Zarathustra.
Keep in mind that by the Fantasia Arc, Guts is only 21 years old. Going through he Eclipse, fighting the Apostles and wearing the Berserker Armor have aged him at least 20 years.
Amazing video as always! I think you should've added more of the physical toll that the Berserker armor has inflicted on Guts. In Volume 33, it was shown that Guts' eyesight has begun to blur significantly and his sense of taste has also been numbed.

If you don’t already know, guts is heavily designed after the image of Ash from the evil dead army of darkness. There’s even a reference when guts receives the mechanical arm and says "groovy"

we need guts and casca's relationship part 2 done, if it wasn't already. we also need your input on the moon boy and his connection with Griffith, since we have been given new information, and how it works, how it plays on mythology and various factors you can fit in to the video.
What a journey he had, he had people mess his life up pretty badly. First his foster father then Griffith. It just happened to be at times when he thought things were going not so bad. Like with Gambino, first he gives him ointment to help with his scar then he sells him out to Donovan right after. Then he came back for Griffith and not long after saving him twice, Griffith marks him and his friends (including his gf) to be sacrificed. Because of these betrayals, he became more and more ruthless. Before Donovan happened, he struggled to kill one man. After, he had no trouble putting a crossbow in his mouth and shooting him. Before Griffith incident, he felt bad about hurting kids. After, he was not afraid of putting an entire town of them in danger if it lured out an apostle. He’s not this ruthless anymore tho because he has a team that has his back. Even keeps his berserker armor on for emergencies all the time to avoid another eclipse from happening.

One of the best things I like about the Berserker armor:
The way it's first shown, just sitting there, patiently, waiting.
And also, the point where he uses the cannon in his arm against Grunbeld, you can see his false hand seperating from his armor and swinging to the bottom of his arm.

And I love the fact that his design changes throughout the story whether it'd be important story beats or the passage of time.

The fact the brand is on the neck and chest of guts and casca means it can’t be removed, ever.
I think it's telling that what the texture of the Berserker armor seems most reminiscent of is a dragon, particularly a dragon's scales.
Pairing that with his Dragonslayer sword reminds me of that saying, how even the strongest materials can be broken when struck by themselves. With your point of, if Guts can wield the Dragonslayer, what does that make him, I think it ties together that Guts had to push himself into something no longer humanesque in order to achieve his goals.
In a slightly more stretched connection, it's interesting that the dragonlike armor is what he dons when his goal becomes 'protecting his treasure' rather than revenge.

You compared Femto to Guts in Berserker armor and pointed out how similar they look,but I think all similarities end there. Griffith didn't become Femto to protect anyone,he didn't care what he would become,he just wanted his dream,his kingdom. Guts doesn't want any of that nor he ever did,he always fought to see another day,for himself and for Casca and his new friends. My point is,Griffith gave up his humanity,while Guts doesn't want to lose his.
You missed a prior point in the video. Erica asks Guts why he wears black. That is because his enemies are in pitch black as well. This dialogue is a subtle wink to Nietzsche's famous quote "When you stare into abyss...etc." As the Beast of Darkness predicted, Guts *may* become a monster to defeat Griffith.

Agreed, but by donning the Berserker armor, Guts is jeopardizing his humanity and will possibly have to sacrifice his own humanity. Certainly not the same selfish thing Griffith did, but it is somewhat similar in that both men are giving up their humanity to achieve a goal. A selfish, evil goal in Griffith's case, and a selfless goal by which Guts ironically is rediscovering his humanity through his journey and companions.

Guts' goes from the most basic from of armour (helmet and breastplate. Even extremely poor soldiers tried to get some form of chest and head protrection) to full plate which is the most advanced armour one can get. Add ontop the interal cannon and the added superhuman abilities and its more like power armour
I think the Brand's placement was perhaps random for the most of the Hawks, but it came apparent as it was more of a burden and a top his shoulders, a parallell much drawn from Atlas' burden of the world on top of his shoulders, and Casca's on her intimate and feminine parts.
The translation you showed in the dragonslayer backstory segment is WAY different than the "bandofthehawk" (fan)translation I read years and years ago. Who translated the version you showed? I'm guessing a major manga translation company?

Guts is willing to sacrifice just like Griffith. Willing to slowly go berserk and kill everyone around him (including his loved ones) to reach his ultimate goal. This video blew my mind when it showed Guts and Femto side by side. Berserk is so subjective. That's what make it so great.Its so HUMAN!

Hey question for lore buffs, is the reason that Guts can wield the Dragonslayer a result of the fact that he exits in the interstice? I recall a character mention that those who reside there can more easily manipulate the material world, or something along those lines.

the main reason as to why Guts is able to wield the Dragon-slayer is not due to being in the interstate, but due to his use of over-sized swords since childhood, his muscle structure was groomed to specialize in wielding large swords. And he can't be the son of an apostle, if he was he would have much more demonic characteristics that should be noticeable and a far greater ability to act within the interstate much earlier in the story. We could say that guts, given his size and facial features, that his parents were probably from two different places, given his mother was part of a tribal clan. And when you look at it like that, and the fact his mother was hanged from a tree with others, he may be the son of one of his mother's tormenters after having been tortured for some time, before being hanged. Miura will have to go into greater depth with that to prove otherwise.
@Whipper of Merchants dude what you said is right, but you forget that this is a fantasy action comic: the author can make a few exagerations (like the sword being THAT big) to make the action more epic. But I don't think this affects the story (i.e. Guts being demonic), just a metaphor for Guts' willpower.

I love this little detail: When Guts delivers the final blow to the boar apostle, He didn't even fully step out of the building so he SMASHES the sword through the door and cuts the apostle in two in ONE SWING. Talk about power.
