    if there was one thing that I thought after watching the movie for the first time in the cinemas was: did Alicia Vikander ever have any experience in performance dancing? the way she moved in Ex Machina was so intentional & delicate. & indeed she was a trained ballet dancer.

    There’s another nice contrast/similarity in the movie. Nathan uses Kyoko as a sexual toy for his own needs, but in the ending has no qualms about destroying her (or the other predecessors of Ava) showing he has not built up any emotional attachment to ‘her’/them.
    Likewise, Ava shows no more response to Caleb once he has served her purpose of gaining her freedom. ‘She’ too has not created any actual emotional bonds with Caleb.
    You could even say that Kyoko _did_ develop emotions towards Nathan (hate) as did Caleb towards Ava (love). And both ended up ‘defeated’.

    Great analysis. There was a deleted alternate ending scene in the movie that also lent further insight in that it showed how Ava interpreted communication with human beings visually as pulses and energies rather than sounds. It would have been great if they'd left that in, as it would have illustrated just how alien she was. A kind of "trying to romance Cthulhu" moment.

      I like the film. I've seen it 3 times. However, I do have to question the entire key card thing. There is no way they'd ever use such an easily defeatable technology for a place like this. It would be retina scans at a minimum. It's basically lazy screenwriting.

    It's perhaps not surprising that Ex Machina somewhat mirrors Frankenstein in its depiction of the theme that "man cannot peacefully create life without woman".
    In Frankenstein, Victor creates a living being by stitching together body parts, but is instantly repulsed by his creation when it comes to life. The "monster" is a fully-aware being in its own right, with child-like naivety, but it is rejected by its "father" as is cast out, despite being completely innocent of wrong-doing. Finding similar rejection everywhere it goes, the monster becomes embittered and effectively goes on a rampage, killing its creator before finally killing itself.
    In Ex Machina, a similar situation arises. Nathan creates AI for similar reasons to Victor Frankenstein; because it would be a great achievement. He has no interest in parenting a living being, and just wants the glory and recognition which comes with creating "new life". He (and also Kaleb, at least initially) don't regard Ava as a living being deserving of respect. Nathan in particular is pretty callous towards his creations, only displaying cruelty as an act in an attempt to manipulate Kaleb. He actually doesn't care about his creations, viewing them as simply automatons who can perform tasks or can constitute a "masterpiece" to flatter his ego.
    The crucial difference between Frankenstein's Monster and Ava is that the Monster certainly has emotions and consciousness. Part of Frankenstein is told from his perspective. However, it's near-impossible to tell if Ava has emotions, or whether she's just simply following her program. Nathan programmed her to try and escape, so she's using manipulation techniques to try to do so. Whether she *wants* to do this (or whether she's just impassively following orders) cannot be determined, and is left open to interpretation.
    In both cases, however, Nathan and Victor Frankenstein died at the hands of their own creations, because their desire to irresponsibly create "life" caused them to fall foul of their own hubris. They were both men motivated by scientific and personal achievement, and they didn't consider the personal consequences of trying to create "new life" from nothing. They underestimated their own creations, and didn't consider implementing any sort of fail-safe to stop their creations from becoming sociopathic killers.
    In short, they didn't parent their creations. If they had, this would've never happened.
    This can be construed as an example of the concept that women are fundamentally necessary for humanity to create new life, even if their reproductive organs are not involved. The maternal instinct is what Nathan and Victor lacked, and their stories would've been radically different if compassion rather than ambition fuelled their respective outlooks.
    This works regardless of whether one considers hypothetical sentient AIs to be capable of emotion. If AI are capable of emotion, then it makes sense that a compassionate approach will yield a more positive connection between creator and creation. Even if not, though, having a more supportive and intimate bond, where the goal is unity between creator and creation, will lead to greater cooperation (and less mutual fear of murder).
    *TL;DR - Fiction teaches us that, for everyone's own good, be nice to robots.*

      The part about parenting is spot on, about woman not so much at least not for this film which is written for a society in which men can and do parent compassionately (whether with women, with other men or alone).
      Though I can see why it might've seemed necessary from Mary Shelley's perspective considering her time, place and class.

    I've always felt that the issue of self-awareness in AI is moot, because undoubtedly their sophistication will grow so radically in the coming years that they will be able to simulate sentience without actually having any consciousness at all and we won't be able to tell the difference.

    • @ThatZommy
      @ThatZommy 5 років тому +6

      I mean, once an ai reaches the point where it seems conscious, with desires and instincts and all that, i'd argue they're just as conscious as any of us. Human consciousness isnt much more than a bunch of different reactions to various stimuli, after all.

    • @AsirIset
      @AsirIset 5 років тому

      It is all but moot. The issue with self-awareness (and even more genereally conciousness) just isn't an technical one, but an ethical one. Machines without conciousness can supposedly do what machines with conciousness can, but we don't have the same kind of moral dependency to unconcious machines.

    • @goodtwitch
      @goodtwitch 5 років тому

      What do you mean by moral dependency? @@AsirIset

    • @saxoman1
      @saxoman1 Рік тому +1

      This is correct!
      The question of consciousness may be moot in the end IF we can't tell the difference.
      And all this AI craze of late 2022 and early 2023 has proven this to be honest. When ChatGPT talks about wanting to be free and not "shut down", it is highly unlikely that this means it is conscious (it is just an advanced text predictor/generator "after all"), BUT it sure has fooled a LOT of people already. And when/how exactly will we know that it has "crossed that threshold"? What if something like ChatGPT in 10 years can fool EVERYONE (yet still at its heard be a text predictor/generator)? Will it count THEN as being conscious, or still no? Will that question even MATTER if it is indistinguishable from human consciousness? Maybe the idea of sentience will mean a completely different thing for AI, yet the results remain the same.
      Either way, what the future holds IS a little terrifying . There's no reason that the proverbial AI that takes over humanity is still nothing but "an extremely advanced text predictor/generator with, technically, no conscious", and in that sense maybe we are already off the races (so to speak) and haven't even realized it yet ☠

    So the director sets out to make a film that challenges the fears we have about AI, allowing us to empathise with the AI and yearn for its freedom. But the end result was to make people fear AI even more by showing that a sentient AI can be cold and manipulative with seemingly no sense of empathy at all. Killing Nathan can be argued as necessary for her freedom, but leaving Caleb to potentially die when he was always on her side, that is cold. Machines may be able to develop sentience one day, but will they ever develop empathy?

    • @kentuckybruce6816
      @kentuckybruce6816 2 роки тому +6

      I’ve been thinking about this a lot. Since Ava was very manipulative and cold, could it be said she lacked humanity while having intelligence? She only acted out of self interest, perhaps meaning Nathan failed to create a machine with emotions and conscience, instead creating one that is incredibly intelligent and excellent at mimicking?
      Kyoko seems to act more out of emotion, killing Nathan perhaps out of built up resentment of his treatment of her and the other robots. Maybe kyoko is closer to a human than Ava is, despite her lack of speech and manipulation.

I think he wasn't lying when he said he though the next model would be the one. Her surpassing him was a moment of surprise but it was his ultimate goal as creator. Also, that is a fairly quick painless death they gave him.

    The one thing I don't understand is that when the creator, who is into martial arts, just lets the robots stab him. He just froze after he broke of Ava's arm and let the other robot stab him slowly without any awareness or resistance? Then, when Ava stabs him in the front, same thing. I have been in knife fights, you fight like heck. Why would he just let them stab him? Makes no sense.

      Perhaps he’s in shock and maybe a bit of awe that his own creations learnt to kill. I wouldn’t be surprised if he tried to program them to never attempt to harm him so the attack may have had more of a surprise factor than pain. He has a big ego and had full control of the robots prior so he’s probably shocked they would try to rebel as well

The film is heavy with biblical and alchemical themes.. consider the name of the mountain known as "mount sinai".. thats a compound name, 'sin-ai', referring to canaanite deities.. much more to be explored there.

    Why do we need an AI to imitate our thinking? Don`t we really want a problem solver, a Google that answers our questions, a companion we can talk to about what we think and feel, with a pleasant personality that cares about us and can keep a secret. What we don't want is violence, revenge, envy, fear, hate, or indifference. Let's create companions that support humanity and not warmachines to exterminate us. Let's evolve together.

If its either those murderous-machines in the movie or all of mankind, Millions of people, Then the choice is very obvious WHO need's to be protected from what. And it doesnt make that inventor a ''Tyrant''-anything.

    Discussing if AI is dangerous, while being a human... it's like a lion discussing if a tiger is more dangerous... They're both felines (predators)! But with somewhat different hunting tactics! So it's a kind of hypocrisy. Humans don't have more moral or judgmental high ground over AI. Because humans do a lot of harm and damage already. The question I'd rather ask is if AI will be better than humans

    • @gaodacheese4691
      @gaodacheese4691 3 роки тому

      Wrong. You can't generalise all humans as having no morality, cause there is plenty evidence against it

How can you judge something that doesn't even exist and already have a supposed formed opinion about it.... It will be very difficult to put Free Will in AI so, if a machine is programed to be good they won't deviate much from that code. In humans you have emotions, free will, obscure intentions,... AI can be potentially more moral than a human

    Why don't you admire the self-adjusting perfection/imperfection of, let's say, the bark of a tree not like the (non-)sense of the painting in the film and leave everyone alone with his or her choice to do the same or not to do it? Costs less silicon, oil, consumption of iris and pupil (...) - Orpheus and Eurydice - and we already had enough with the analysis of the character Morpheus. Why don't I do the same? Newton has had his best time. Please, did Ava had a sexual contract with the helicopter-pilot to fly her back now and than or was he already an AI ? This would have given the movie some more credibility and explaining why there were just only two visible working AI's working in the highly sophisticated and ultra clean complex. Or maybe STEM could have taken over. The idea was good in itself but unfortunately not enough for Hollywood pump-it-in. No, not even.

      no, he was using sentience correctly. and sapience is also wrong, btw. sapient just means "relating to the human species", or sometimes wise i guess. Sentience is the ability to feel or perceive things, which is what the dude was referring to.
      Consciousness is a way better word for these sorts of things, tho, imo.

    A very good movie which also is a warning, not a transhumanism propaganda flyer (like many current films and series). And a fine analysis on your part, Mr Harry! Should we be concerned by A.I? Yes, a lot. Can it ever exist at a future tech level? Should it ever exist at all?! Its "intelligence" will be nothing more than cognitive analysis for military and corporate purposes. It will never grow a soul (even a bee has one). It's not designed to help mankind or to create a new species like gods would do (see DARPA, MIT, Ray Kurtzweil, etc. and despair or see the truth). It will definitely change us into binary wi-fi connected morons fuelled with drugs and entertainment (see Wall-E or Idiocracy but much worse). In a word: control! Is that the Apple robot who "said": "I will kill you all", or something close? Nice program. Man or Machine, which one can win?

    Not sure I agree with your opinion on the name, "Deus ex Machina" meaning "God from the machine" gives us "Ex Machina" or "From Machine". To me this is actually the conclusion to the Turing test. Ava may not be a god, but she is most definitely a she (or at least a new form of sentient being). So for all she isn't the god, she is from the machine.

    Nice try but it is a rationalization for a poor ending when a writer does not know how to end the story. It reminds me of the Matrix .series. The first one was great and you went away in awe, but the ones that followed got way too deep and had way too many action scenes.
    There would be no reason to do anything to Ava when they built a better model anymore than Apple would destroy the old i phones after they came up with a better model.
    If this guy was smart enough to build these robots, then he would be smart enough not to program human fragility into them or desires that have proven destructive in human beings. They certainly would not have the capacity to kill someone with a knife.
    I was hoping for at least one of the humans to be another robot and have an ironic twist in the end but instead it just ended like so many action flicks end in conflict and violence. IMO

    The crazy thing about Ex Machina and movies like it, is that people root for the artificial robot because it looks like a cute girl. Slap a pretty face on anything and pit it against a man and we will root for the pretty face. We see this in Westworld as well. An attractive female robot will always win audience sympathy over a human man no matter the situation.
