- I’m sharing with you our experiences with toddler speech delay and our son Cohen. Here are 10 signs that we noticed with him. It's hard not feeling guilt or the feeling of being able to do more (or better).
If you are at all concerned with your child and their speech, just have them assessed by a doctor and speech therapist. There is absolutely no harm or any cons in seeing a speech therapist.

My son didn't say a word until he was 3. Every child is different . Some sit quietly yet take it all in as did my son. Even if children are late talking most of them level out with their peers at some point. Top of his class and bright as a button my son.

I read through the comments and see other mom's having a rough time with their little ones. I can relate so well, my son, who is 4 now started speech, occupational and developmental therapies when he turned 2, and when he transitioned to school at age 3 he continued receiving therapy in school which he attended 2 hours a day Mon - Fri. He made 4 in March and the pandemic hit hard!, the schools and therapy services were shut down now we have been homeschooling and working with him at home for improvements in the areas he struggled in. I must say he has come a long way and there is still more to come. I'm extremely proud of his successes so far. Through my experiences I learned to keep doing what we do as parents be consistent, love on your child, teach, show and tell them things this will help expand their vocabulary and day to day activities, make time for them and they will eventually grasp it. Every child learns and process things differently so it all takes time so don't beat yourself up. I wish everyone well !

@@amiraharakow344 thank you so much for asking and following up with me. Jaxson has improved tremendously he still receives speech therapy but occupational has been discontinued for him. His speech is so much clearer now and more appropriate than ever. He is more expressive and knows what he wants and when. We are still working with him at home daily and he has come a long way this has been a journey for my husband and myself but I'm confident things will still continue to improve with time, I have faith. Thank you so much for reaching out to me I really appreciate it.🤗

As a parent how do you know the difference between a speech delay or autism symptoms?
I’m currently going through this. My son is 18 months and only says dada but can’t say in demand and towards me.
That was exactly how my little sister was she grew out of it so if you're worried I hope this gives you some peace.
It's so unfortunate this had to happen but thanks for sharing your experience! It's so helpful for mommas to know what to look for.

Yes always trust what your Mama heart 💗says. It can’t hurt to have your daughter assessed. Speech therapy has helped my son so much!
Literally left the doc office so upset and almost in tears. My son is 2 1/2 and displays everything you have dealt with. The insane tantrums. The saying sounds the refusal to talk. I mean your spot on. My doc says I should get him checked for autism and I was so offended. My son is sooo bright and clever and understands everything. He’s such an avid reader with books always wanting to learn new things and learn it himself so he can be independent. I truly believe he will talk when he’s 3. It’s like a mom gut feeling in me. I’m switching docs cause I need to find a doctor that has seen more babies. My son was crawling at 5 months and walking before his birthday. I’m going to have him see a speech therapist and see what they may think of if he’s able to grow with that. I tell my doctor if he could talk everything would be perfect. My son just refuses to talk he like screams, barks mumbles if we do something that he doesn’t want we try it encourage him to say a word and word. But he’s rather make the sound of the object than say it. Thanks for this video this doc was making me feel like I was crazy. I know it doesn’t hurt to seek help esp if there’s nothing wrong but I just am so bothered how healthcare professionals have kids wanting to be mini adults by the time their 2-3. Like not every kid is on that timeline. Give me a break.

It’s actually crazy to think of the difference from when I posted this video. I posted this almost 2 months before my son turned 3 and it was like a speech light switch was turned on when he turned 3.

Hi Zovig, how is your son doing now? My son is 33 months at the moment and we are at the same spot as you were a year ago - just a few words, tantrums, screaming...And at the same time he is a clever and cheeky little fella, who has a strong will. With us there is a diagnosed hearing loss.

Oh mom guilt is a powerful burden to carry. You are right - must not let it take over. Recognize you are experiencing it and let it go!!! Raising kids is such a "learn as you go" thing!! 😩 Especially when you have more than one and discover they all develop and learn differently... (me). LOL I'm so glad you are sharing your experience with moms to help them on their parenting journeys.
Its crazy how different each child is! Children are one of our best teachers in life! Yup letting go of mom guilt!
My two sons have the same 10 signs which you mentied in this video and I was going through hell and back just to put these points together and make a sense of what is actually happening with them... Im for certain my son has a speech delay. Everyone says I'm crazy. Hes two has had a first word, over a year ago. But he doesn't say words now. He still says sounds and babing and he doesn't understand what anything means.

Its so hard to tell if its just them being on their own schedule/milestones but getting it checked out definitely can't hurt and yes even just for piece of mind. Moms truly know best for their own child!
I thought that my youngest had speech delay, as my oldest did everything so very early. But Trent was on his own time schedule with things... and now I can't get him to "shut up". Thanks for sharing!

Hi id like to help reassure some of the mum's. My son was a late talker. He did all the pointing bit to. My daughter was so fast at talking, so I compared them alot. He had to have speech therapy until the age of six. He didn't actually start to say a few words until he was close to 3. At six he had to have his tonsils and adinoids out. His speech greatly improved after that. I don't know if that was the problem or just a coincidence, but worth checking out. He's now 31 and works in IT not a hint of a speech problem and is in an advisory role were he is talking to large volumes of people every day. And has even given talks to school children. So take heart mum's, things can may seem scary and dark, I've been there. I have a video of my son at 4 saying..."Loo a big hig"...translated as "look at that big thing" which was an aeroplane.
Try not to stress out too much. My youngest son was such a bad eater compared to his older siblings. I was convinced my son would starve. Again it was just his way and today at 26 is a strapping big man. Don't beat yourselves up and take each day as it comes. Things can improve naturally.
This is so much like my son! Thank you so much for this video. I have been feeling so much guilt because I got pregnant when he was 8 months old and was so sick and unable to get around well at the end so things didn’t happen. But my son has so many of these signs. He turns 2 next month and so many people think I’m overreacting about his speech. But I decided I’m going to push the doctor for an evaluation at his 2 year check up because I keep saying having him checked out doesn’t hurt anything. Well I’ve started doing some research on speech and teaching him because he does things like won’t point to body parts and I found this video. It makes me feel so much better. My kid before him just turned 17 and I’ve been thinking I don’t remember how to teach my kids things because he’s just not doing it yet. I’m not one to worry too much if my kid is a little slower at picking things up but at the same time know it’s important to get heap early for problems.

You have described my son... he's start babbled recently he saying mama.. but not often... feel so sad but its comforting I'm not the only one going through this with there toddler.
I'm going through the same thing with my daughter. I'm currently waiting on an appointment with a Speech Therapist and Audiologist.
I'm going thru the same with my son 2and half year old now.

Thank God nobody is mentioning autism because i am so sick of hearing of that...i feel every child develop on their own time and we as parents need to let them have that time but also help them along the way
Yes so true! I have 3 kids and they have all developed at different rates. I never really ever felt it was autism with my son but I know that not speaking can be a sign
And what is wrong with Autism?
Nothing is wrong with autism its just that i find these doctors love to label children with autism...every child develops differently at their own pace...

My son is nearly 18 months and isn't really speaking much (he makes sounds) or walking yet. I think I'm going to insist on a hearing test after this video. Thank you so much for sharing :)
My youngest (who is 23 months) Just started talking and she was a late walker too. Its so hard to tell if they are just taking their sweet time and developing on their on pace. Its still something to bring up to your Doctor if you are concerned though. My son didn't start talking till he was 3 and is doing well with speech therapy and his aide.

I knew children before who had speech delays until they reached four and are now on their puberty stage and they all are living normally. This means that even if signs and symptoms of autism become manifest when they were young, they may all be gone eventually as they grow older.

My son is turning 4 soon and has qualified for more therapy so we will take the help while we can. I never really suspected his symptoms or delays were related to autism. Currently he has more of a delay in articulation & a few others delays.
Wrong if a kid has autism they have it for life it doesn’t come and go

@@doyouhearthepeoplesing2 They could be a carrier. There are people who don't have the major markers of autism, but have small traces of it. This can include things like the inability to read subtle facial changes, have no desire to be like other people, or have strong emotions with a lack of "neutral." Otherwise, they're completely normal. They tend to have neurodiverse siblings. A carrier may have more severe signs of neurodiversity in early childhood, then they become less sensitive and more socially-skilled as they grow.
Autism isn't a speech problem, its a sensory processing problem. The late speaking thing isn't exactly related to autism at all

Oh girl. My 2 year old girl is going through this too. I wanna cry I have a teacher coming from speech therapy and she stopped coming because of covid19 in the world. I just want my lil one to start talking. This made me cry because I'm really trying. I feel like I'm a failure. 😥😭

Thank you for your video. Im a mother of three also.. My son will be 2 in August and doesn't say not 1 word or associate words to anything. With being able to work at home during this covid time, it's giving me more time to work with him. Its scarey thinking something is wrong with your baby and unable to get the help because of it being during this pandemic.
Yes its tough with all the pandemic stuff! I've heard from lots of moms who were in the middle of getting their kids assessed and when all this stuff hit, they kind of got lost in a grey area with no movement forward in therapy. There are lots of great resources online but sometimes that can be overwhelming. I really like the Speech Sisters on instagram for really good tips.

Thank you for your video. My 2 1/2 year old has similar issues. He has improved since he turned 2 but we have arranged for a speech therapist to come see him in a couple of weeks.

My son is 2.5 and a lot of the things you explained are exactly him!! I’m so happy I found this video. It is SO hard to not compare! I love my boy so much and it hurts me when people think he is slow. He has a cousin who is 2 months younger and saying way way more than my boy. But my son has always been more advanced with his motor skills- balance, coordination, etc. he’s much more focused on physical aspects and running around than trying to sound stuff out and practicing words. My son’s word for car was always the *Brrroom* sound, and just recently he’s changed it to “CAH”. He calls cats “Now” because they go “meow”. Sheep are “baas”- and so on. He can say his colors, but struggles with orange so he makes up his own word. He can recognize numbers, and count, but he calls EVERY number “Two”. It’s like he’s nervous to try sounding them out. I had him evaluated right before his second birthday and speech eval ladies came and said he was advanced in everything including social skills, no signs of autism, but speech was in the average range so he didn’t qualify for their services. His doc thinks I’m a loony mom when I bring up his speech because he’s still “only 2”. I like his doctor and his doctor has like 18 grandchildren and has seen plenty of kids grow at different paces and he seems confident my boy is fine. I still find myself comparing my son to other kids and feeling guilty though 😔 Thank you for the reassurance at the end of this video it really helped me snap out of it

When I filmed this video, my son was just about to turn 3 and wasn't saying very much but when he turned 3, it was like it just connected and he just started talking. Just like you mentioned, its like it was partially a lack of confidence. He just turned 4 and did qualify for assistance but its more or less just working on the articulation of words. So yes, its so hard not to worry as a mom but its just really just trusting in our children and trusting the process.

Same. So hard not to compare. My son will be 2 in 5 weeks. Makes me feel terrible as a mom. He said mama at like 7 months. I even caught it on camera. Then after his hep B shot it’s like he regressed. Like he stopped saying mama for like 3 months after the shot and he just seemed different. But then he started saying dada. Bye bye. Eat. And he started saying the E I E I part in the the bingo song. This week.
it enlighten me when i watch this video, my son is 23 months and still not talking more on T sounds and mama, thats only he knows to say. A lot of people tells me not directly that maybe theres something why does he didnt talk like that blah blah and its getting me frustrated and sometimes thinking maybe yeah there something wrong like that im getting anxious. But my son he understand me already i can give him instructions then he will do it, and he can remember what our daily routine. its just he really doesnt utter a words alot, but there are times he follows what im saying but not often it worries me actually. sigh

Thanks for sharing your experience! This is helpful. This sounds a lot like my youngest son. My older son was an early talker (like clear words, full sentences by 2years old!), so I was worried when my youngest did not talk much until he was three. I noticed he understood really well, but just used VERY few words. He also threw lots of fits when he couldn't communicate with us. Now he talks really well and has full sentences! And P.S. My daughter's name is Elynna (Ellen-na)- sounds similar to your daughter's!
oh neat! yes very similar names! I'm sure your daughter gets her name mispronounced lots too. My son has started talking more since he turned 3 too!
This gives me hope ! Because my little understands everything!
We are a bit worried to my 2 years old nephew. He can't even speak mama or papa. Can't even do hand gestures for 2 or like this ✌. When we ask him to speak like dog or cat he will just say "aw aw". And when he sing twinkle twinkle all the lyrics was T. Is it normal?
My son does the same thing for “dog” and also calls everything “blue” so funny how similar!
My daughter says apple at all the fruits.😂

I searched this up bc my cousin is 2 and it was strange for my whole family that he still can’t speak. All he does is scream, bites on things, and doesn’t listen when someone talks to him. But the only word he understands is “no”

I lived with a speech therapist. He had some demons (not literally figure of speech)
One day he went off on me when I came back from a trip with my son. He made my son cry I got a hotel because I was so frightened by how he spoke to me and my son. I know he knew better too. After I blocked him he texted my dad saying my son has a speech delay. I am so angry in my heart that someone would ever come after my son. He speaks so much I watched this because I hate to admit it but his comment really hurt me. My son has played with him before. I'll never trust anyone to be alone with my son :( he was so crazy and horrible. Yet he was so educated graduated from Berkley!

My son is almost 18 months and still no words 😞 his hearing was checked at birth it was perfect, his pediatrician recommended Omega 3, we’ll see..I might take him for a hearing check after watching this video..thank you for sharing ✨💕✨
Its so hard not to worry about our little ones but I assure you, 18 months means there is still lots of time! You are taking a proactive path by getting them assessed and it means you are an amazing and supportive parent!
I've seen first hand, how every child grows on their own time line with all 3 of my kids and only 1 of mine was speaking at 18 months.

My daughter hums and don’t say much . She’s says little stuff but the doctor sent us to the speech Therapist and she’s still not walking around but can pull her self up . I’m so worried about everything
May I ask how is your son now? My son is 2 years old now and mirrors your situation at the time. We were adviced by the doctor to go have him looked at, but we're reluctant to go out to the clinic nowadays because of the COVID situation.

My son is almost 2 and he's developmentally delayed. He babbled a lot and started talking but around 14 months, he stopped. he went from about 5-6 words to none. We got him evaluated and they've determined that he is developmentally delayed, he gets therapy three times a week. He doesn't have any words on a regular basis but we're very hopeful it will improve.
Tantrums are awful too. I can totally relate to a lot of this.

I was told using sounds of animals counts as words, even if they have said the name of animal in the past. My daughter said mama at 3 months. She’s said simple words and 2 words sentences by a year. Fast forward to 19 months; she still puts 2 words and some 3 word sentences together, but it’s not as often. She says ruff and meow, papa, yes , shakes head yes and no, points can pick up a red ( or any color) crayon of I ask but won’t say it. I read to her, we play. I didn’t think it struck concern until her dad keeps mentioning she should talk more

It's so unfortunate that you had to go through that with your son, sometimes doctors really misguide us, and we put all of our trust in them. My son just turned 13 months, and he still doesn't talk. He babbles a lot, but isn't saying "mama, papa". Our pediatrician said by 12 months they should be saying 3 words... so I'm getting worried.. I'm going to consider taking him to a SLP!! Hey Khadija, thank you so much for your comment! Yes it’s so hard, as moms, to not worry about our little ones. 13 months is still pretty young & it’s great that he is babbling lots. I always say though, trust your instinct mama! Absolutely no harm in asking a doctor. If anything they will send for a hearing test first.

My daughter is 18 months and she has a few words she will say on her own time (mama, daddy, baby, baba) but she won’t try and say anything when I sit and work with her or when I ask her to say the words she already knows😭
My son is almost like yours! He bubble but I can't compere with other children. His first word was hi( ciao) we live in Italy, but I'm Polish. It was at 1,5 year, after start to say am am or mniam for the food when wanna eat, after word No. Now speak maybe 10 or 12 words:ciao, mniam, no, mama, papa(daddy) bus, giu( to go out), hau hau -dog, miau - cat, chrum -pig, siu siu for go to toilet is from polish language He also use some strange word like you say mispronunced for example for his friend her name is Eliana but he call her Cici. I hope he start to speak at age 3 if no we must take him to therapist, he also understand two languages italian and polish. I stimulate him but he repeat only sounds that are easy for him or sometimes say other like I say baba and he say papa, I think still has not mature articulation, I was panic of autism but for now neurologopedist said she don't see autism here.

My son's motor skills are advance and he started cruising at 7 months. He's 18 months already and can understand some words but can only say mama. I am so frustrated already
My son is turning 2 in January and he is making more sounds and saying momma every now and then . His walking was delayed started walking at 11 months I feel like he does stuff on his own time because he skipped crawling I hope this is the same and that he starts talking sometime next year
just came home today from my 2 yr old son pedia visit.and the pedia is suggested me on going to have hearing test for my son and accessment for speech therapy.my son says few words only like head,nose,mouth,byebye,hello,hi. but he does all i asked him to do like go close the door etc.
Hearing test is usually the first step, just to rule it out. Thats awesome that he has a few words!

@@Gachaqueen15 they just turned 4 and 3yo last month.. so far the eldest can already talk but my youngest really needs therapy since she was diagnosed with mild asd.. Don't worry mommy.. every child has its own pacing and trust that everything will get better in time but of course you need to support your child's development too.. I have a cousin who was diagnosed with mikd asd @ 3 with speech delays too but now he's a 16yo, a normal teenager going senior high and a very opinionated teen. ❤️🌻

My son will be 2yrs old next month. When he was less than a year old he started to say mama, dada. After a yr old he started to sing, clap to whatever he was watching. He used to say quack quack. All those that i have mentioned he no longer does. Sometimes i cried and feel bad that he's not talking. He is seeing a speech theraphy but i dont think that it is working. I just want my son to talk.
I can relate, its frustrating because thats how we grown ups used to communicate. There is only one thing you really can do, repeat repeat and repeat. Its hard work, but in the end, thats the only way you can do to "speed up" the process.

Howdy! My 2-year-old daughter watches cartoons on TV but also plays, she has interactive toys and we play with her. We don't put it on the phone almost at all, and in the car it has a tablet with a holder in the headrest that we only use in emergencies (rarely). She recognizes a lot of things, responds to names and is very active, but not talking yet. She babbles on her "tongue", takes us by the hand if she needs something, and rarely utters words. Should we be worried?
@yuqinglee7583 my little girl still doesn't have a developed vocabulary but is improving in communication, completes 4, 9, 16 piece puzzles quickly by herself and memorizes things easily. The doctor said it seems to be just a speech delay.

So glad I watched this video. My son will be two next month & he refuses to talk.. before 18 months he was saying everything from ball to thank you. I would say words & he would repeat them after me. Since COVID he has regressed.. he just refuses to talk. He will say no & mama.. that’s it. I’m kind of confused and I really don’t know what to do.. should I wait until two or?
Mines too. Words my daughter knew and repeated all the time, i realized she doesn't say a few of them now. And I know she can say them.

@@kiranriaz7043 hello & he is doing great! I got him into speech therapy at 2, he will be three next Saturday & he talks soooo good! He asks questions and expresses himself, we’re just working on his confidence (I think he second guesses himself a lot) but other than that great, thank you for asking!
My daughter is 18 months soon and she says mama, ball, uh oh, bye, and she clearly understands me if i tell her to do something like put your socks on, she will raise her little feet but she don't talk much...she is very smart but she sucks on her tongue alot and i feel like its really stopping her speech!! How should I get her to stop sucking her tongue?
Am I the only father who has seen this . My son is 20 months old and dr said he was developmentaly delayed. I’m crushed and feel so bad . He’s physically ahead he has been since birth the boy can run jump climb like it’s nothing. He figures out how to get passed baby gate . He just simply climbed over it . So I can see him constantly problem solving in his mind . I just don’t know what to think and currently I’m afraid for him .
How is he now he almost same as my son can you update us pls.?

Mine is almost 2. Very limited vocabulary, and even the words he does say, it's not consistent. Mine actually did babble a lot as a baby though, so I think it's strange he isn't talking more. I have been told that he has all the precursors for speech though, but he does have mild impairment for receptive and expressive language.

Mom guilt is so HARD! Why do we do that to ourselves and its so much easier said then done to stop feeling guilt!
My son can say all his siblings names accept one for some reason. Maybe the word Antoine is too hard for him, and hes 20 months though.
My son is 19 months old n in my opinion he is very smart n response well, he learns stuff quickly, has good memory, knows is body parts, he follow instructions well n know exactly what he's doing I think he is genius, the only problem I have is that he's not talking just babbling n pointing, I think he is holding back n afraid to talk

He's doing really well! Just still working on articulations of certain sounds. Was your son already doing speech therapy before everything closed down. Its been so tough with out the extra resources and preschool so I feel your pain.
My son turned 3yrs old last month. Not saying a word yet, just babble sometimes. He had hearing test last year October and passed. He was receiving speech therapy 1x weekly. Now due to Covid-19, all sessions stopped since March.
This time has been so tough for those that need extra support. My sons therapy has been cut back quite a bit as well. Did they set up any virtual education for you and your family?
Nothing set up all from them...truly sad
My youngest is 19 months and doesn't talk. She is seeing a speech pathologist, and has been for about a month, but she still doesn't understand. My baby girl also does not point to anything, so it makes it even more difficult to tell what she wants. We just filled out an autism packet and will be getting her hearing checked in July. Sometimes I wonder what I did wrong because my 12 year old picked up and said words like a parrot.

That is amazing you have seen a speech therapist already & getting the tools you need.
My youngest (who is around the same age as yours ) isn’t talking yet too. My oldest (7y) was also the same & was talking at 13 months so, I can get trapped in that guilt too but quickly come out of it because I remind myself that every baby is different.
My son has had great results with speech therapy (we only started shortly before this video was uploaded) so early intervention is even better for your daughter. 💕
Have you tried baby signing? I found that helpful with all of my kids until they started talking. We didn’t do too many but it was great for when they wanted milk or water or wanted up.
@@AMomforEverySeason We are teaching her sign, but she seems to think clapping is a universal sign. She started out clapping for more, which her therapist said was okay because the more sign is hard to do. Since she realized it gets her what she wants she's started doing it for eat, up, drink... I guess you can say she's using it as a "yeah" sign now. Lol

My oldest son was an early talker and hasn’t stopped since! My middle son was a little later but still on track. He’s still a little quieter but I think it’s more that he gets embarrassed easy because he is shy and he does have a little bit of a speech impediment. My baby babbles tons so I think he’ll be a little more like his oldest brother!
All 3 of our kiddos sound similar! My oldest was a super early talker too! My son actually has started talking more now but yes, its almost like he's embarrassed by it. My youngest is 1 too and starting to babble lots and says Mom and Dadda lots
i think my son is having a speech delay too. he's leardned words but he forgets some of it as time goes by. i taught him the dog sound and everytime he sees an animal, he says "aw aw". i taught him mooo sound and everything goes mooo. he doesnt follow me like if i say "mama" , i know hes not autistic because he can understand things like get your shoes, or go drink your water. or throw this in the trash can. he also doesnt show other asd symptoms. Im guessing it's a speech delay.
Do speech delay means that the baby is not intelligent when they get old? Because i read a lot of articles that saying if the baby talks early they are smart.
My 2yr old hasn’t had much development in 6 months. Just says “what’s that” to everything. has a vocab of about 15 words.
Hello, I noticed that you made this video last year. My 27 month year old son is not talking at all, he babbles when he feels like it, mostly grunts/hums, he knows what we are saying to him but just doesn’t repeat when we talk to him. He can say bye, hi, shark, bath but ONLY when he wants to. He has yet to say mommy or daddy. It is very hard because I cannot help but compare to his older brother at this age, who was talking in sentences at 2 already. I was referred to early intervention but I thought to wait it out but now I am desperate. How is your child’s progress since this video?
Yes I made this video a month and half before my son turned 3 and just after we started with a speech therapist. Once he turned 3 his words really took off but he does still have a couple delays- more in his articulations of words (like he still can't pronounce F, C and R sounds- Fox is 0x or Cat is at) He qualified for early intervention and an aide 4x a week so that has really helped .
Its so hard not to compare your children. My oldest was very clearly talking at 18 months; Cohen was only saying mama, dada and ball before his 3rd birthday and my youngest who is 23 months is just starting to say more words. So it could just be that your son is following his own schedule and he just needs time.
I'm not sure how early intervention works in different countries (We are in Canada and its free) but it has been really helpful. If it isn't free and within your budget it can't hurt at all and is well worth it. I had to really get over my mom guilt and that I somehow caused his delay. Cohen has some fine motor skill delays too that really hit me hard but than I realized I would just take all the free resources and help we could get.
