Such great video film footage of nature at its cruellest, or best. There's absolutely no room for either compassion or sentimentality when actually living out in the wilderness.
I hate how people keep siding saying either "those damn wolves are non-natives and need to be exterminated" or "bison suck!" Neither animal is wrong or bad. Wolves are one of the diverse animals in North America. There should be no set size. In one pack, the female was only 80 pounds, while her mate was 150. So to say all of these wolves are "killer mutants" is one of the most absurd things I've ever heard. And disliking an animal (Bison) just because it's in conflict with an animal you like more is immature, and gives wolf lovers a bad name. True I like wolves better, but I don't take sides. Both animals are trying to survive and should be respected for it.
I'll never get why people think a species that his been living in area for thousands (if not millions) of years isn't native to that area. By their logic, lions aren't native to Africa.
Love watching the wolves in their tactics and strategies they use in hunting, awesome to watch, one way doesn’t work they will use a different way, animals are so smart, lot smarter than humans give them credit for
you know what makes wolves so unique? its their ability to stay together, hunt, kill and eat together. When one is in trouble, the other jumps in to help. These stupid bison could easy scare the whole pack away if they didn't just stand there and watch one of their own being eaten alive.
That´s very interesting. If the one adult bison haven´t tried to cross the river, the calf stayed in the circle of adults. And it had survived. The wolves had their fun too, "playing" with the adults. I wish I could know what animals think...
You're wrong. Average weight for wolves in Yellowstone is 110 pounds. The largest wolf ever killed was 170 pounds, the largest wolf in Yellowstone is 148 pounds. The wolf population has stabilized at around 100 wolves. They dont need to be 'thinned'
Which pack was this? I've only ever seen the Slough Creek pack tough enough to take out a bison. Another confirmed bison kill by wolves I heard the hunt took 36 hours. I love bison (and they are delicious) and I love wolves and I love seeing the ecosystem doing its thing. I say get rid of cattle and bring in the bison they are stronger, leaner and oh so much healthier (to eat, like I said, they are delicious)
really cool how wolves hunt bison here they seem to be playing with them and to imagine that 16000 yrs ago bc dire wolves were doing the same thing only on a much more common basis.
First, their extraordinarely developed sense of smell let them detect very subtle hints of an animal's health. Have you heard about "dogs smelling your fear"? They can, it's called detecting your higher adrenaline levels. Second, they don't exclusively take old, injured or ill animals. They prefer to do it, because it's easier. When there is none around, they simply have to work harder and kill healthy animals. But doing it one way or another don't make them "good" or "bad".
I think the point ppl are missing here is that the wolves reintroduced into the west are NOT the same type that were originally here. These wolves were brought in from Alaska and are much larger than the native species. Larger wolves are better able to pull down larger prey and need more food to keep them going. I'm all for letting mother nature do her work, but we (humans), in our effort to play "God" have really screwed things up.
And just look at some of the wolves that were reintroduced. They have found wolves that came from yellowstone and migrated to nebraska and south dakota and came back to yellowstone look at wolf OR-7. He migrated from northern oregon to california and back into oregon in just a few months. Wolves can easily migrate from canada across the border and they have but people kill them. So please smart guy, prove me wrong and tell me how they are the wrong sub species? What are your "sources"?
And, even if they ARE the "wrong sub-species", they still aren't damaging the ecosystem, as it's only invasive species (and humans) that damage ecosystems.
@Swiftab1e WOAH!!! No need to get angry! I'm not debating you're point, I was just making a joke...sortof. See, what I did there, it's called a "paradox". Just think about it...
They introduced the wrong kind of Wolf, instead of the Northern Rocky Mountain subspecies which typically goes about 120 pounds in weight they introduced Wolves from the McKenzie Valley which go about 170 pounds, and are just too overpowered compared to the local game and competing predators.
@EvisHP Well... not really. Not all humans are nasty with Earth. The Native Americans had the right idea. We can live here; it would be fine. But yes, we are taking too much, and going too far. Paradise is a state of mind, not a place. It's different for all of us.
These wolves are not wolves of YNP. They were transplanted, introduced into the park in 1995. Canis Lupus Occidentalis should be shot on sight. They are not native here, therefor not endangered.
nice fore the wolves but did ya'll see how nasty those bisons are ( i know animal instinct) but breaking the ranks and deserting your man is never justified...XD
@EvisHP What an idiotic thing to say. You think an elk or bison think its paradise while they are bieng eaten alive by wolves. At least the mountain lion kills its prey before eaating it.
In the early 1900 humans killed all the wolves in Yellowstone I think in 1995 wolves were reintroduced into the Yellowstone Ecosystem and are doing quite well in Idaho wolves are a huge nuisance in though they are usually illegal to kill they are killed anyways people are sick of them telling their animals and pets. Personally I don't care what happens to the wolves, Yellowstone survived 70 years without them, personally I believe they were reintroduced as an attraction
They were reintroduced to help with the ecosystem. And I'm not sure how Yellowstone was doing well without the wolves, with all the deer and elk overpopulating. Despite what you think, overpopulation of species is actually bad for the ecosystem.
What's "human- parasite ideas"? Is it a theory espoused by you? Sounds childish. I was talking about wars and mans inhumanity towards man. Now run along and dont piss me off.
With your reply to him, the context of his message became much clearer. Congratulations.
All have to survive. Sometimes the bison are on top, and sometimes the wolves are on top.
Such great video film footage of nature at its cruellest, or best.

Dan, nice to see your work is getting some recognition. You should post the Wolves hunting the arthritic Elk video.
Sincerely,
An old student
Just look how much fun this hunt was for the wolves. They seemed more playing as hunting. Cute :3

notice how the raven show up almost immediately. They are really smart birds.
I saw wolves in yellowstone, it was awesome. -40 degrees too.

I kniow it looks bad, but it's not.
Bison made a mistake leaving that calf wide open.
Natural, wild, beautiful
great vid.
wolves are THE BEST ANIMALS IN THE WHOLE UNIVERSE
@SteezyStash22 the way that you do it, right?
I love bison and not so much wolfs because one growled at me. When a bison growls, it is usually good. (Is the bison on the far left farting?)

@coerepair what happened to the native wolves of YNP? why didn't they re-introduce those wolves?
Umm, they DID reintroduce wolves. It would be quite hard to film a video of wolves in Yellowstone if there aren't wolves in Yellowstone.
@moss020697 No, they are extinct in the vast majority of their previous habitat
really cool how wolves hunt bison here they seem to be playing with them and to imagine that 16000 yrs ago bc dire wolves were doing the same thing only on a much more common basis.
The bison leaving at the end was a pretty stupid move on their part >__>
the 1 dislike was a bison
@cakesofdeath Wolves do start to eat their prey waile it is still alive.
Good vid mac. I hope to get one of those rascals this season. the wolf that is.
they really need to thin the Yellowstone packs
funny how herd animals are so much dumber than their predator counterparts

Made the number one mistake with wolves! Never run..always hold your ground.
i would like to see a wolf in the wild i think it would be fun.
@NaturalGrace ur right buddy :)
wolves don't suffocate its kill like a lion or tiger, they eat you alive.

Hmm i dont think the wolves enjoy being shot do you?
(Not a death threat i swear)
why do those dogs keep on bugging those cows
Damn Nature, You Scary!
long live the wolf
@EvisHP how would you know it would be paradise....no humans means you wouldnt be there to see it....
@Bananayoghurt1000 yeah true that :S
@EvisHP hey start the trend...
They introduced the wrong kind of Wolf, instead of the Northern Rocky Mountain subspecies which typically goes about 120 pounds in weight they introduced Wolves from the McKenzie Valley which go about 170 pounds, and are just too overpowered compared to the local game and competing predators.
@operationNOBO Treated humanely? Lol... no.
It doesn't make them less tasty though.
@EvisHP

@bgvrd1 Yeah thats what i said.
@bgvrd1 if i had to fight a wolf i would at least want him to have a chance
These wolves are not wolves of YNP. They were transplanted, introduced into the park in 1995. Canis Lupus Occidentalis should be shot on sight. They are not native here, therefor not endangered.
"Not native there" Dude, wolves have been living in Yellowstone for thousands of years. So they 100% ARE native.
nice fore the wolves but did ya'll see how nasty those bisons are ( i know animal instinct) but breaking the ranks and deserting your man is never justified...XD

@furryone66 Please stop giving furries a bad name. T_T

wolf hunters are good when they're dead

Time to hunt the wolves.
One Legged Josh Yeah a species that has been struggling to get back on its feet for several decades.
