i was there this weekend and because of the snow we couldn't get through the whole park.. we got lucky and saw a moma bear with her 3 cubs but we wanted to see wolves.. do you know where their easily to see in the park?
the wolves haven't totally learned to hunt like the wolves in Wood Buffalo National Park, who routinely take down large bison. These wolves were amateurish in their tactics but eventually they got the prey they wanted.
I hate how people keep siding saying either "those damn wolves are non-natives and need to be exterminated" or "bison suck!" Neither animal is wrong or bad. Wolves are one of the diverse animals in North America. There should be no set size. In one pack, the female was only 80 pounds, while her mate was 150. So to say all of these wolves are "killer mutants" is one of the most absurd things I've ever heard. And disliking an animal (Bison) just because it's in conflict with an animal you like more is immature, and gives wolf lovers a bad name. True I like wolves better, but I don't take sides. Both animals are trying to survive and should be respected for it.
I'll never get why people think a species that his been living in area for thousands (if not millions) of years isn't native to that area. By their logic, lions aren't native to Africa.
In the early 1900 humans killed all the wolves in Yellowstone I think in 1995 wolves were reintroduced into the Yellowstone Ecosystem and are doing quite well in Idaho wolves are a huge nuisance in though they are usually illegal to kill they are killed anyways people are sick of them telling their animals and pets. Personally I don't care what happens to the wolves, Yellowstone survived 70 years without them, personally I believe they were reintroduced as an attraction
They were reintroduced to help with the ecosystem. And I'm not sure how Yellowstone was doing well without the wolves, with all the deer and elk overpopulating. Despite what you think, overpopulation of species is actually bad for the ecosystem.
You're wrong. Average weight for wolves in Yellowstone is 110 pounds. The largest wolf ever killed was 170 pounds, the largest wolf in Yellowstone is 148 pounds. The wolf population has stabilized at around 100 wolves. They dont need to be 'thinned'
And just look at some of the wolves that were reintroduced. They have found wolves that came from yellowstone and migrated to nebraska and south dakota and came back to yellowstone look at wolf OR-7. He migrated from northern oregon to california and back into oregon in just a few months. Wolves can easily migrate from canada across the border and they have but people kill them. So please smart guy, prove me wrong and tell me how they are the wrong sub species? What are your "sources"?
And, even if they ARE the "wrong sub-species", they still aren't damaging the ecosystem, as it's only invasive species (and humans) that damage ecosystems.
If there are several sources to prove that it's non native than what is it? What has ever stopped the wolves living right near the border in canada to come into the us? For a species to be a subspecies, they have to live in different environment, they have to be isolated from the population, hunt different game, etc. So please tell me, what is stopping them and what is so different? it's the same prey same environment nothing is stopping them and the states border each other dumb ass
They weren't brought here from Alaska they were brought here from british columbia and Alberta get your facts straight and the wolves they brought here had free access to the rocky mountain states that they were introduced. People think they are different kinda wolves because they weren't here and stayed in Canada but not true they were always trying to come here but people would kill em. They migrated from Canada to Montana and established a breeding population before the reintroduction!
Actually petard, there are many subspecies of wolves. But I wouldn't expect someone with a single digit IQ to understand biology. There are several sources to prove that spp.C.L.occ is not, nor ever has been the wolf of the lower 48...until now. As such they are in fact an 'introduced, nonnative species' and by bringing them here they actually violated the ESA.
They introduced the wrong kind of Wolf, instead of the Northern Rocky Mountain subspecies which typically goes about 120 pounds in weight they introduced Wolves from the McKenzie Valley which go about 170 pounds, and are just too overpowered compared to the local game and competing predators.
First, their extraordinarely developed sense of smell let them detect very subtle hints of an animal's health. Have you heard about "dogs smelling your fear"? They can, it's called detecting your higher adrenaline levels. Second, they don't exclusively take old, injured or ill animals. They prefer to do it, because it's easier. When there is none around, they simply have to work harder and kill healthy animals. But doing it one way or another don't make them "good" or "bad".
I would disagree I think all of nature should be like Yellowstone and we should just let everything happen naturally. If wolves kill all the Bison or another animal we should just let it be. That's the world I one day want to live in.
"Let everything happen naturally." How nice. So the guy out on his surfboard being attacked by a great white or tiger shark should be left for "everything to happen naturally", yes?

Yep. Being last in line is never a good thing for the buff. 😞

Wolves generally hunts small bisons because big ones can easily kill a few wolves.

they really need to thin the Yellowstone packs
