It's odd - I've seen the G1000 behave like the 530 in this screen too - where the FMS knob controlled the chapter/page of the search. I'll have another look at it later.
At about 32:00 you lost NAV truck cz you deviated a lot from your flight path. If with HDG Mode you go close to your flight plan line, I repeat closer and you engage NAV mode, the AP will do its job. It's like the example you mentioned earlier with The mountains and the lost NAV signal. Congratulations very good tutorial.
This video has been INCREDIBLY helpful!!! Some things I knew. I lot I didn't. Also, I was wondering, @30:41 if you had turned off HDG would the GPS have followed the FPL? Because to me it seemed as if it was still following the heading hence, it wouldn't turn. I mean, I'm a novice but that's what I noticed. I haven't practiced it yet. Regardless, I really do appreciate the video! Thanks from a sim pilot here in Los Angeles! Cheer!
You can't really "turn off" a mode - you can disable the autopilot though, and then when you re-activate it, it will be in roll hold mode unless you give it different instructions.
Click on procedures and set your departure and destination airports, you can change a lot of stuff. When flight planning from the Garmin, i always launch from a parking spot that way there isn't anything preloaded in it. Check out Kip On The Ground.HAe had a lot of Garmin 1000 tutorials
Hi love that video. I "think" I saw twice, where you entered a change, then said you hit the Nav mode, However the Garmin menu still said you were in the heading mode. Maybe around 30-31 & 38 minutes in. Perhaps I missed something, but that would explain why you thought the AP was not working, but still following HDG mode.
I like to have the inset map on the PFD, but zoomed in to have a closer view of turns etc as I approach. On the MFD I zoom out to have a larger overall flight plan type view. So kind of handy to have the inset map, or at least to me.
I live in Chicago and fly out of Meigs Field to surrounding airports. Will you do a video of an ILS flight from Meigs Field to O'Hare International Airport. I am determined to learn ILS. Thank you so much. Oh, how can one person (you) know so much about flying? I am totally impressed. YOU are my instructor.
I'm just learning, along with everybody else - and sharing what I learn :) There's a LOT of procedural stuff that I still don't know, but I'm getting there. I'll take a look at Meigs and O'Hare soon! To be honest, it's easier to learn ILS somewhere that only has one runway, and nothing nearby. I'll see what I can do.
@@jonbeckett Hi - I also had not heard of Little Navmap, which I have now installed. Quick question, please: When launched Little Navmap has colour panels overlaid on the maps. This makes the map a little hard to read. How do I remove the colour overlays?

Great training and learned a lot. Do you use joystick or keyboard for your flying ? Is there a cheat sheet for the keyboard commands? What was the command you used to cheat and position your plane from the start point on tarmac onto the active runway
Another great video. Can you confirm a couple of things I'm struggling with? When you programmed your plan how do you know what is the correct depart & arrival runway to use? Also I'm on Xbox so how can I calibrate the barometric reading? Thanks
Quick question, since the departure airport in this case has a single instrument departure, and it's to the south of the airport, would it have been advantageous to depart on RW30 rather than RW02?
Great video, after watching a bunch this one helped me the most. I've always been a hands on VR Pilot but have been intrigued to find out more of the G1000 capabilities. I have a question, once you made the ILS 108.90 active would the auto-pilot line up with the runway on it's own or does that only help to manually find the right course and glide slope?
In NAV mode, the autopilot will follow the ILS localiser signal *laterally* - it will not descend. In APP (or "approach") mode, the autopilot will also follow the glideslope *vertically* down to the runway. However - most autopilots will not "capture" the glideslope from above - you have to fly "into" the glideslope from below it - so fly straight and level into it, and then the plan will start descending. That's why it's important to factor in where you might intercept the centreline - how far away - because then you can work out what altitude you need to be *below* in order to still be below the glideslope at that point. A good rule of thumb - the illustrated "feathers" on the map are typically 8 miles long. At 8 miles, a 3 degree glideslope will be 2500ft above ground level. Remember to work out airfield elevation - you're basing your height on that - not above sea level :)
Good explanations. In future, I would suggest either getting rid of the command bars if possible (the pink delta) on the VSI , or, better, put them to use.
Hi ! Have a newbie question to ask here , if flying any aircraft with g1000 , do i need to buy anything like switch panel , multifunction panel and radio panel to make them works ? or just use mouse to control everything ? tks
Very useful, thanks. Probably a noob question but: Couple of times you mentioned pressing F. What does that do? (Examined my keyboard bindings but the only remotely likely candidate seemed to be "Radio > DME".)

Thanks for the video. Just a quick question... why we can only see +5 -5 degrees pitch angle on the PFD while I see a bigger range than that in the real unit?
Curious about something. If the nxi already has autopilot, why does the Kodiak 100 have a separate AP panel? BTW….your explanation of the inner and outer knobs on the nxi is extremely helpful. Understanding that the outer knob “moves” fields, and the inner know “changes” selections within a field made it so much easier. I have been trying to remember what know does what in various screens, never realizing the simplicity of each knobs use. Even the letters within the origin selection etc, as long as we recognize that the field is only one letter, indicated by the colored box.
How do you get such clear resolution for these glass panels? Mine shows buttons have blurry labels and the frames are kind black rather than greyish like yours. is there a recommended setting? I am using Nvidia RTX 3070.
16:10 If anyone runs into the same problem: I could not click the inner knob, nothing happens. Turns out, you need to _right-click_ it. Weird. Took me ages to find out.
Thanks for an amazing tutorial! I am brand new to MSFS so I have a truly basic question. How are you able to move so seamlessly around the cockpit, zooming in and out and squaring up on different instruments and views? Thanks in advance for your help!
Hold the right mouse button down, and you can pan. Use the cursor keys and you can slide around. You can re-map the keys - I have done so to change the up/down arrow keys to move forwards and backwards easily.

Hi, could you advise on the magenta CROSSED through height mean within a FP? I created a FP within MSFS and when I check the FP, MFD and route map, part of the route (the magenta hatched heights) is not showing between to waypoints? Therefore the FD cannot direct the AP and the aircraft will fly straight on its current HDG.
Thanks for the informative video. I’m back in flight simulator after a few years and it’s nice learning again. What app did you use for the flight planning and can you export that directly into the G1000?
I am using VR so I can't alt-tab to another application. Are the ILS and VORTAC frequencies browsable from inside the Garmin? As I wont have the companion app that you were using.
Jonathan, how did you get such good graphics? I have MS Flt Sim 2020, but it doesn't look as good as yours? Is there something I should be doing to improve it? Please let me know, great window
Great video. After planning a route and switching to nav mode, the AP does not follow waypoints. I have to manually activate each leg. Is this normal? Thanks.
I don't understand what the "transition" is for. Presumably the departure track ends at BUELT so why can't you then just fly a path from BUELT to AVE? Why does there have to be a transition?
I'm currently in the CAP unit in my area and preparing to train for Mission Scanner. I am going to need to learn how to operate the Garmin G1000 unit in our aircraft. I'm about as much as a beginner as a beginner can be. If I purchase Microsoft Flight Simulator 2023, is this training available for me to learn while I'm at home? Is it on the Standard Version? I want to be on a fast track to learn this system and I think having this type of simulator at home, gives me the opportunity to master it. I just want to make sure before I spend my hard earned money.
Great video. Disappointing that the G1000 Nav mode mode doesn't work if vastly different direction, and also doesn't control the throttle. Also, will it actually follow the glide slope automatically? Does the NXi give these features which then take it pretty close to an FMC. My real life flying was on steam gauges only with VOR and NDBs so I would have killed for this capability! Can the flightplan be produced on LittleNavMap, which I've just downloaded, and then autoloader into the G1000 by just loading the .PLN file?
The only route to pre-fill the G1000 is by using the menu to plan a flight when starting the simulator. You can load a flight plan that has been saved from LittleNavMap as a PLN. To be honest, NAV mode shouldn't really perform wonders - it's common across most navigation systems that you have to get them within a predetermined margin before "capture" will happen. Also - auto throttle is an entirely different system in most aircraft that have it :)
@@ColinDyckes I just explained how to do it - export from LittleNavMap as PLN file, load that into the World Map screen in the simulator, and then it appears within the G1000 at startup.
OK here's a weird issue. I don't have the ability to "push" any of the knobs on the G1000 I can push the buttons with my cursor. I can rotate the inner and outer knobs on the knobs, but cannot push the buttons to highlight selections. I don't get the little arrow cursor when hovering over the ends of the knobs. I usually download flight plans in using Little Navmap, but wanted to do it on the G1000. Very strange
@@jonbeckett Well, I figured it out with the help of the internet. I had to go to General Options>Accessibility>User Interface and change the cockpit interaction system to "LEGACY"
Pretty disappointing no matter how many hours I've tried to figure this system out it won't allow me to pick my destination through the g1000. Get LAS loaded up and it seems like it's gonna work. I press enter and it disappears. Then it won't allow me to try to pick my destination again. Go to restart flight and repeat all pre flight checklist and try to enter destination again and the same thing. I'm overly frustrated with it today so I'm done. I'll just pick my flight plan the boring way through the main menu.
Thanks for that tutorial Jonathan……I have one query though……I’m used to Autopilots turning at Rate 1…….but I notice that when you engaged Hdg or Nav it goes to 25 deg AOB……not a rate 1 turn for the speed you were doing which was around 105kts…….at that speed a rate 1 is about 17-18 deg AOB……..is this an anomaly in the sim or it’s like that for the real G1000? Cheers
Your guess is as good as mine :) The early versions of the G1000 in the sim are not tremendously accurate. They have been getting better and better though.
i'm sorry but I have a stupid question here, when I tried to create flight plan with C172 G1000 manually and also input the ILS approach as well, the plan itself doesn't register to ATC which makes me fly without the guidance from ATC. do you know what caused that issue? any response would be appreciate.
You should get your private pilot cert, you have 90% of the crap out of the way , learning a G1000 takes a lot of flight time and instruction you now have down. I recommend using a real world Cessna 172 G1000 checklist.

Because the flightplan has manual or vectors for that segment - meaning you fly it. or you modify the flight plan :)
Thanks for the informative video. I’m back in flight simulator after a few years and it’s nice learning again. What app did you use for the flight planning and can you export that directly into the G1000?
He's using little navmap. Yes, it can be exported into the MSFS flight planning menu
I have it set to Ultra. Graphics card is NVIDIA 8030 RTX
Great video. After planning a route and switching to nav mode, the AP does not follow waypoints. I have to manually activate each leg. Is this normal? Thanks.
No - that is not normal. As you reach the end of each leg it should switch to the next automatically.
@@jonbeckett I have worked it out. I was messing with buttons on the Garmin. Once I left it alone it cracked on. Thanks.
this is sssssssssssssoooooooooo cool! what is the flight plan program you are using on the separate window
LittleNavMap.
I don't understand what the "transition" is for. Presumably the departure track ends at BUELT so why can't you then just fly a path from BUELT to AVE? Why does there have to be a transition?
Where did you get the page with all the airport info and procedures, etc, …
Do you mean "LittleNavMap" ? It's a free Windows application.
Great help.... Thanks... Roger
The basic version of MSFS has the Cessna 172 with the Garmin G1000 in it. You'll have all sorts of fun learning it :)
@@jonbeckett Thanks for the reply. So... No way to preload the G1000 from any flightplanner? :(
@@ColinDyckes I just explained how to do it - export from LittleNavMap as PLN file, load that into the World Map screen in the simulator, and then it appears within the G1000 at startup.
@@jonbeckett Sorry. I thought you were saying that the only way was to enter it manually into the G1000 (with the engine running).
Hello, how can I enable the Flight Path Marker to display. I don't see this tool on the G1000 in MSFS or in the actual airplane. Thanks
When entering a flight plan, how do you input a Waypoint based on Lat/Long coordinates?
Hi how did you get the live weather tab up. Is it built in sim or do I need activesky thanks
It's built in.
what if your airport do not have a departure procedure, what do you do then?
Thanks really helpful!
What is the other map you keep switching to?
OK here's a weird issue. I don't have the ability to "push" any of the knobs on the G1000 I can push the buttons with my cursor. I can rotate the inner and outer knobs on the knobs, but cannot push the buttons to highlight selections. I don't get the little arrow cursor when hovering over the ends of the knobs. I usually download flight plans in using Little Navmap, but wanted to do it on the G1000. Very strange
Very odd ..
@@jonbeckett Well, I figured it out with the help of the internet. I had to go to General Options>Accessibility>User Interface and change the cockpit interaction system to "LEGACY"
Is it possible to delete a flightplan in the Flight Plan Catalog?
I think it just shows recent simbrief generated flights
When i press the inner knob , i don't have any dialogue pop up
It's dependent on which page you have on-screen. Also, some aircraft have different versions of the G1000 installed.
You must be doing something very strange - it always works for me.
Enjoyed that.
How did you get the large map at 19:18?
It's an application called Little Nav Map
i'm sorry but I have a stupid question here, when I tried to create flight plan with C172 G1000 manually and also input the ILS approach as well, the plan itself doesn't register to ATC which makes me fly without the guidance from ATC. do you know what caused that issue? any response would be appreciate.
Yep - programming it by hand won't send it to ATC :) That's a Flight Sim problem :)
Nice, subscribed
You should get your private pilot cert, you have 90% of the crap out of the way , learning a G1000 takes a lot of flight time and instruction you now have down. I recommend using a real world Cessna 172 G1000 checklist.
I would love to follow your lead but as a complete noob, hearing, watching and actually doing it myself is quite a juggle. 😮😢
I just hate this G1000 display, so difficult to set plan.

Jonathan, the only problem is that you sound exactly like piers Morgan. //ji
Perfeito.
I am a little confused. This is a beginners guide. I am a beginner. Never done this before. So I think this is the tuturial for me. You lost me within a minute. How can you call this a beginner guide and immediately start using aviation terms without explaining them?
Beginner to aviation is a different story than beginner with the Garmin. I'll keep it in mind for a possible future video.
@@jonbeckett Your videos will take forever if you have to explain every "aviation" term you use in these videos. Well explained btw. 🙂👍 I am refreshing my FS experience after several years of not flying FS, and it really helps out. (after 40 yrs of avionics experience I have the time now to dig in 😁
Not gonna lean the mixture? 😂
