Incredibly helpful tutorial on the Autopilot system in the Cessna 172 G1000. I just purchased the Honeycomb Bravo throttle quadrant which has AP controls built into it and had no idea how it worked. Your video, while I will need to watch it several times to fully understand, has helped me immensely to get started with this new control accessory. You now have a new subscriber. Thanks!
Bloody Great!!!!! Very clear and concise. Have been flying for 20 years, but left off for 7, then acquired FS 2020 and needed to brush up my skills. I recommend this clip highly. 10 out of 10. Keep going.
Very clear tutorials. High quality audio and video with a pleasant voice. Jonathan is also occasionally witty making it a joyful learning experience. Thanks and keep going.
going to follow this tonight, all of your videos are so good, very clear and concise no waffle like some, im a newbie and your vids have helped so much. thank you. keep it up.
This is by far my most favorite plane to fly in the simulator and the autopilot navigation is a big help in understanding how to fly this plane! Big thanks man!
@Jonathan Beckett, thanks for an excellent tut on how to use the AP on the G1000! What is really creditable is that you did the whole video in one take, which is very rare amongst the other Flight Simmers on UA-cam, who split each chapter of their tut, and later join them. This presentation style of yours indicates your deep knowledge, clarity of thought and mind, and confidence! Commendable indeed! You just earned a like and a new sub for your efforts!
I always record in one take, and never edit. Thanks for the vote of confidence! I think mistakes are just as valuable as doing things "right" - so if I make a mistake along the way, or can't figure something out, I say as much.
This video provides an excellent set of three views, G1000 PFD, Little Navmap for aircraft position/direction on the map, and the windscreen view. Jonathan demonstrates the basics of flying to/from the VOR, using the autopilot with the VOR and and ILS landing. An excellent multi view, detailed instruction video. VOR navigation caused me lot of confusion that took a while to sort out. This video would have helped a lot (also agood refresher today).
After a longish break from X-Plane 11 I recently bought MSFS. So much new stuff to learn after an absence of 2 years - and you dear sir are my go-to source for high quality in-depth tutorials. Thank you for all your hard work! I've scoured your library looking for a C172 G1000 tutorial with a short(ish) programmed flightplan with GPS nav and autopilot which terminates in a full ILS approach and landing. At the moment I'm struggling a little with the "enroute" section when no airways are involved and manually transitioning to a track that intercepts the localiser. If you can recommend one of your videos I'd be most grateful. Keep up the great work Jonathon... 😊👍🏻
tried all this last night and all was a lot easier than i anticipated, only issue was heading knob would only move slightly either way and not much happened, also holding in did not move the blue marker at all. probably something i done wrong or something i didnt do, hey ho back to the video, try again, will get there eventualy, but love the video, us newbies need them.......a lot.
Thank you for the time spent setting up these tutorials. I am very new to MSFS so a constant learning curve. I have over 1000 hrs as PPL in singles all VFR and very experienced in using maps. I have great interest in your map display. Looks like Google maps terrain, but it includes detailed airport info plus track made good snail trail. How do you do that. It’s exactly what I want to help me with enroute nav info. All the best Oldjla
This is the video I've been looking for to understand the basics of navigating with autopilot with the G1000, MSFS. You cover a large range of features and options: My only suggestion would be to list an index of time markers. Like right now, I'd like to refer back to the section on DME... Then I'm off to check out your videos on flight planning.... Thanks again - New Subscriber
Excellent. I am ‘old school’ where software like MSFS and devices like the G1000 came with an instruction manual came with instructions! You had to get stuck in, do the graft and end up with understanding. These days the manufacturers seem to rely on You Tubers like yourself to do their job. Most of my frustrations so far has been because of ignorance of which button to press and when. Thank you for coming to my rescue. As a retired professional engineer, I need to understand how things work in order to make best of them and you certainly helped greatly with that. Thank you. Are you a pilot?
Found your channel recently and I have to say, you have the best tutorial vidoes. Can you do some more on the 172 and dive deep into navigation, ILS, VOR, RNAV, and explain what these are and when to use them?
Hi Jonathan, thanks for all the videos. I press the nav button (as in 25:50) and get a white "vor" next to green "hdg" and the plane does not follow the vor . What am I doing wrong?
Ok, please ignore previous messages, I moved the plane to line up with the gps cdi and now it follows when I put press "nav". I thought the plane would find and follow the flight plan by itself. Still learning. Thanks.
Mr. Beckett thank you for your time and sharing your knowledge. I am completely new and overwhelmed by the flight simulation. I have two on my PC that I enjoy. But they are for RC flying, which I have done for years. I have just enrolled in and just started my Ground Schooling. In hopes of earning my PPL. I have just subscribed to your channel. I have completed one video. Outstanding!!! But after that I’m lost in all that available. I was amazed at how realistic and detailed this simulation is. If you have the time, May I ask for some assistance please? I’m 64 and retired, definitely not the sharpest technology student. Wondering if you would help map out a direction with me in order to get a jump start on my flight schooling. Plus enjoying time on this simulator please? I have seen Microsoft simulator priced from $5 to $120. What do I need to enjoy and learn the controls and procedures of flying the Cessna 150 or Cessna 172 plane, simulator wise? I have a PC built for gaming by Jeff Ford out of Texas. I noticed you are using a Thrustmaster joystick and throttle. Besides that could you recommend which version of the simulator, yoke and rudder pedals that would make a good starting bundle please. Maybe in the $300-$400 range???? I know this is asking a lot. Any information, recommendations or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to watching, enjoying and learning from your channel. I’d just appreciate some help getting setup. Thank you and God bless. Jeff Stone
As I replied to your email - your best bet - rather than just have my opinion - is to join a community such as VirtualFlight.Online where you can ask everybody.
You wouldn't. It's an interesting point - there are navigation aids built into the game that exist in the real world, but you cannot easily lookup while in the game. BUT because they exist in the real world, you can look them up online (skyvector and chartfox come to mind).
@@jonbeckett thank you i thought i was just being stupid, its a big learning curve.. If i set up in world map. i try to pick a point a few miles ahead of the runway to line me up i guess this is all we can do if we rely in game options only
Me again, sorry, I moved the vor cdi around and the indicator turned green and followed the course, but I am still getting the white "gps" next to green "hdg" and the plane does not follow my flight plan.

Best G1000 tutorial around! It really answered all the hair-pulling issues I had with it.Thank you very much.

I finally understand this confusing piece if kit. Great clear presentation.
Outstanding video. It allowed me to make extensive notes and significantly increased my knowledge. Well-done!

I'm not sure I've done exactly what you're after - but if you just get used to switching the CDI between GPS and VOR you should be good.
Terrific video. This flight sim noob found it incredibly useful.
Really excellent tutorial.
Instantly brought my flighting experience up a few levels.
Many, many thanks !
The HD version of the video is processing as we speak - if you hang on a few minutes, it will be in glorious 1080P :)
Very clear and easy to follow. Thank you!
This is useful even for the newly released one. I dabble briefly in this one but picked up 2024, this helped a ton with the autopilot.
Fantastic video. I’m upgrading my 172 next month with the G1000 this was an amazing demonstration
Wow, very very useful, for anyone like me who don't read manuals ... thanks !!!
You're welcome!
Absolute brilliant. A great way to learn to use your simulator. 🎉
What a great video! This really explained everything clearly and easily understood. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Of course they have now changed the G1000 over to the nxi haven't they ?
Nice video. I think I need to watch that a few more times!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much for this helpful video!!!
a big thank you for such a wonderful explanation....👏👏👏
Great video that had me feeling like an expert by the end of it -- even though there's a lot more to learn. Thanks.

Great presentation. Thanks. Would like to see some flights with ATC included if possible.
Do you mean "real" ATC (as in VATSIM), or using the ATC built into the game ?
@@jonbeckett Either one would be appreciated.
At time stamp 8:02 you show up multiple windows and in the middle it shows a map, where did you get that and how did you do the multiple windows.
Hold down the ALT key, and press TAB repeatedly (hold ALT with the thumb of your left hand, press tab with your fingers) :)

LittleNavMap
Very helpful video, thank you. What mapping software is that?
Thanks, this is very clear.

Perfect tutorial. KGFK have a BC. Could you please check and make another video? How to use it?
HI,Perfect instruction. Where I can download LITTLE NAVMAP, Thanks
Google it :)

It appears it will not acquire the track unless you are within certain bounds of it - so you can't be flying 90 degrees from it, for example.

I don’t understand if you wasnt using the 3rd party software. What do you do about VOR or ILS. How would you know

Yeah - see my previous response. I've seen that too. It seems you need to be within certain bounds for NAV mode to pick up the plan.

Sounds like you have a mapping conflict somewhere that's making that happen.
