The best thing Illumination Studios has is its marketing team. They know how to sell a movie. And the animation is cheap but efficient. Honestly that’s all I can think of.
keyblade override yeah there are ways to make a movie look good without spending too much money: Captain underpants and even Spiderverse did it, but the main difference is that illumination studios doesn’t really focus on a great story, they just do play it safe for the most part
Honest Opinions spider verse had a tighter budget than most animated studios (The Star bombed with Sony Animations) so they had to get creative. All I meant was that they didn’t have lots of money to make something groundbreaking with animation: something Illumination hasn’t done so far, yet they have shitton of money to do so
Also in Blue Sky’s defense I believe several employees have outright said that they didn’t want to make anymore after 3 but Fox keeps forcing them into it since Ice Age before 5 printed money. Honestly I wonder how the studio will do now since Disney bought Fox’s entertainment subsidiaries? Will Disney Animation/Pixar have more creative control or will they let Blue Sky just do their own thing?

Except The Peanuts Movie (which I think is overrated) wasn't really acclaimed like Spider-Verse, but rather just got better reviews. I feel like it's their Arthur Christmas. So yeah, Blue Sky still had a long way to go before having their Spider-Verse moment.

@SolarChroniclesXII I'm don't have a particular problem with toy story 4. I don't think it's a cash grab or pixar not wanting to let go of the franchise. I think it's that pixar knew how much kids and adults loved the first 3 films and wanted to give the "Even NEWER" generation a chance to experience it. Pixar had even also announced it as their last sequel. So there's nothing to hate about it unless the film is bad. We just have to wait a few more weeks🙂.
One of the most notable differences that I've seen with illumination is that they are not afraid of violence as much as these other animation studios have been. Some of their films even have death portrayed in a comical way. In some ways, it's nice to see that risk being taken.
And I find that to be a good thing. I've been rooting against Disney ever since I found out The Lion King (1994) was actually actually a complete rip off of an older animation called "Kimba the White Lion". And the fact that Disney actually tried to sue *them* disgusts me- as it should've been vice versa. At least Illumination hasn't done something like that as far as I'm aware.

You see marvel and Sony made a deal to include spidey in the mcu but Sony still has the film rights and while Sony owns the film rights and distributed/produced homecoming and the upcoming far from home marvel came up with the story and the entire production. So in a nutshell Sony still has the film rights but marvel and Sony are collaborating the mcu Spider-Man movies
I think illumination is a decent studio. Not perfect but not bad enough to say that they are a garbage studio. And plus, with a few minor improvements, they'll be on top again like any other studio. I'm looking at you Sony😏

@@mania4270 first I'm not hating I called it mediocre, and I understood the point of the video, and I dont mind at all that it makes money, and third, disney and Pixar make good movies that are intelligent and well designed, these guys obviously have the creative power and money to do it, so I think they should, kids deserve the best, becuase their kids and it's really the only time they get too. I feel like people tend to constantly expect deep emotions and stories out of modern animated films, so we forget that simplicity isn't always a bad thing.
an animated movie can be simple and still be really good. Isle of Dogs has a very simple story and was one of the best animated movies of last year. Illumination movies are simple in the wrong way, that way being "lazy".

Clearly there's a good reason that children and adults alike watch Illumination films, whether you like them or not. Though I do somewhat agree on the lazy aspect, as while Pets had pretty good comedy, the plot felt like a rehash of movies like Toy Story and Oliver and Company.

The problem is not that they are bad, it is that they are overly marketing mediocre (which means they have plenty of very good aspects but also many weak points) movies like they are masterpieces. In addition their quality seems to be in a slight declining trend overall since the start of their filmography. Oh yeah, and they produce the worst animated moves ever that earned over 800 million (except perhaps Ice Age)
Yep. That's my motto for these guys too. Honestly, the best advice I can offer is lay off the Despicable Me for a while. It had a good two films. It got a fun ride. But then Illumination oversaturated the franchise to the point where it looked too much like a brand than an actual story, causing The Minions to look more like mascots than characters. The best thing Illumination can do right now is focus on on other projects after Minions 2 before it becomes their Ice Age.

You put IHE as an example for someone who dislikes Illumination but you completely ignored his main point. The point being that the studio has a mentality of using the least amount of effort for maximum profit. I do believe that the animators working in the studio have potential and the movies themselves are not completely bad, the problem I have with them is that they feel like no one really cared about the value of the movies other than making money (the minions are great example of that both in mechandise and the movie which felt rushed and without a soul). I can't really blame the studio for wanting to make money but my problem is that it takes priority on every othe aspect of movie making. It's also true that Sony and Blue skies made the same mistakes and maybe we should really hate on them more, but it still doesn't excuse Illumination's behavior either. Lastly I wanted to say disagree on what you said about Illumination's movies being character driven and having good characters, they don't, they have mediocre characters at best, I watched most of the movies mentioned and never felt like a character had more than an 'aww' moment. There are so many great characters in animation movies, especially in some of the Pixar movies, and compare them to the characters in despicable me, can you still tell me that their characters are as good?

Well, I'll give Illumination credit for this, they definitely knows how to market the hell out of their movies where you literally can't escape from them no matter how much you tried and all of their movies are decently animated and are all not bad but average and after almost a decade of their movies being average and be nothing more than that, that is a big problem because after being around for almost a decade, is this really what Illumination wants their legacy to be known for? Creating nothing but mediocre animated junk that may make a lot of money now but won't age well over time and will never be highly regarded compared to their main competition? Where is that animated movie that can show to critics and audiences where they can have the potential to reinvent their tired old image and be taken very seriously as a major competitor with the rest of the best and well respected animation studios in Hollywood? Disney/Pixar and DreamWorks are the top dogs for a reason and sure, not every movie they release is great but when they do, they can be. As the rest like Blue Sky, they at least have The Peanuts Movie and just last year, Sony Pictures Animation released Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse but where is Illumination's equivalent to those films? Judging by Illumination's standards, Nintendo shouldn't be surprised if Illumination churns out a mediocre movie of their beloved IP that doesn't live up to their usually high standards. Overall, while I also don't think that Illumination is that bad either, I am really not a fan of them either for consistently being the most mediocre animation film studio in the industry working today. I mean, as much as you keep bashing Sony Pictures Animation in the past but judging by the response to how they handled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, at least SPA is finally deciding to stop being seen as a complete joke by The Emoji Movie and just take chances to be taken more seriously as a major competitor but I really can't say the same for Illumination due to them being too cowardly to take any major chances.

i always liked Illumination, i find there animated movies pretty fun and i have a good feeling, since they have the animated Mario movie in the making, with Mr. Miyamoto working with them on it
Ben Jackson Yeah, I have noticed throughout all of their films, they pretty much use the same style on all of their characters, which makes them overly recognisable. Still, it’s a style I personally like and is a unique selling point for the company. By the way, it’s very surprising how they managed to persuade Trey Parker, co creator of South Park, to voice Balthazar Bratt for DM3 and how they got Family Guy creator, Seth McFarlane, to voice the mouse in Sing. Though, the latter is more flexible than Trey, who is more comfortable with producing South Park. I wonder if Matt Stone, or Matt Groening, will do the same?
Ben Jackson Personally, I’d love to see other cartoon director/voice actors have more prominent roles in animated features. Such as Seth Green and Justin Roiland, the creators of Robot Chicken and Rick and Morty respectively. Justin could put his own unique R&M-styled humour into an animated film, but less of the dirty sweary stuff if said film is aimed at kids. But if he were to produce, or star in an animated movie aimed at an older audience, then that’s a different kettle of fish, but more appropriate to his style of humour and target audience.
*HellRay* That, I have noticed. Max does look like he belonged in the Secret Life of Pets and looked more like an Irish setter with his reddish colour. Which, I will admit is a lovely colour, but maybe could have gone with a more tan fur colour, like in the Chuck Jones and Ron Howard adaptation. But, that’s just my thought.
Yeah, so many people just assume it'll be bad because it's being produced by illumination and directed by the same guy who gave us Despicable Me, but many seem to forget that Nintendo's staff is overseeing the project to make sure it turns out right. That's the only reason they even green lit it in the first place.
@@slashermaster28 The only issue with that is that even if it DOES turn out okay, Miyamoto won't allow very much experimentation and I worry i'll be very generic, both because of Illumination AND due to Miyamoto's tendency to prefer the more generic elements of the series.
There's a difference between bad animation and bad character models. They're animations great but their character models are a joke. Big problem. Of course there are one or two exceptions.
I love the fact that for once I got to see someone at least talk great about Illumination. It's great to see something unique. I'm not always interested in seeing their films but there have been some films that I did see in theaters like Sing which is my main favorite film of theirs and I did choose The Secret Life of Pets over the new Ghostbusters movie on my 23rd birthday. :)
Illumination is good. Not terrible, not fantastic, just good. Good enough to watch their movies once or twice, but not good OR bad enough for long-term enjoyment. And that's why I'm sick of seeing the Minions everywhere.
Nice video, I actually thought Sing was interesting. I want to see more films like it. Animated films should be free to tell any kind of story. Success is inevitable and that's a good thing.

I admire you for discussing the positive aspects of Illumination Entertainment, even though I don't care for most of their movies, excluding "Despicable Me 1" and "Sing." I'll just list my own positives from the IE films I saw: "Despicable Me 1&2": Gru and his relationship with his family and minions, the crazy gadgets they use, some genuinely funny jokes/lines (i.e. IT'S SO FLUFFY!) "The Lorax": wonderfully adapting Dr. Seuss' art style into CGI, some bonding moments between the Lorax and the Onceler, Danny DeVito's performance as the Lorax himself "Secret Life of Pets": some nice animal designs, the various activities the pets do without their owners around, and the heartbreaking backstory for the big dog "Sing": the wide variety of songs they sing (Ha!), some likable characters, and rotating between multiple characters throughout the film
I too am one of the people of Earth who actually likes Illumination and this video, along with Bobsheaux's Minion review are refreshing reviews of Minions because I am so sick and tired or people bashing the show with the same complaints over and over again. If they hate it, that's fine but when they do review it, it's all the same. This video was such a breath of fresh air. Also, I don't hear too much flack from the employees working at Illumination. I remember a lot of women were not comfortable when working at Pixar when John Lasseter was involved and when several Dreamworks animation films bombed in 2014, several well known staff were fired because of it, including Conrad Vernon, director of Shrek 2 and Monsters vs Alien who would later work on Sausage Party and the Emoji Movie. Do I have to say about those angry letters Sony recieved?

I will say that I’m still not a fan of Illumination entertainment. The only film I consider my favorite would be: Despicable Me. The second movie almost came close. 1. Disney or Pixar 2. Dreamworks 3. Blue Sky Studios 4. Sony Animation. 5. Illumination.
Exactly, I’m honestly sick and tired of people calling Illumination the worst animation studio ever only because of the Minions and rumors of them “copying and pasting” models. Here are my thoughts on each and every film Illumination has ever made: Despicable Me (Good), Hop (Their worst film ever made), The Lorax (very bad), Despicable Me 2 (Fantastic), Minions (Okay), Secret Life of Pets (Mediocre), Sing (Good), Despicable Me 3 (Meh), The Grinch (Good), and Secret Life of Pets 2 (has some potential, but it’s most likely gonna suck). In all honesty there is one studio that is honestly worse than Illumination; and no, to me it’s not Sony Pictures Animation because they’ve actually made some good and okay films such as Arthur Christmas, Pirates Band of Misfits, Hotel Transylvania, Goosebumps (2015), The Angry Birds Movie (mostly the film’s climax and ending), and Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse. Anyways the one studio that has made much worse animated films than Illumination is The Weinstein Company (their only good animated film was Hoodwinked and that’s it)

Lair! the Cloudy of the Chance of Meatballs movies are good, the only movie you should be hating is The Emoji Movie and the Cloudy of the Chance of Meatballs TV Series.
I prefer blue sky over illumination tbh. With them, I never really see a bad character, it’s pretty rare in all honesty. And their animation is some of the most creative and beautiful I’ve seen. The only problem I’d say they have is that they don’t really know how to use old and new characters at times.
i agree 100%,i don't need every animated movie to be disney/pixar quality, sometimes a simple movie with good characters is all i need, in fact my favorite disney movie is alice in wonderland a basic story with good characters
Illumination is already a step down in animation capabilities compared to major studios due to their lower budget philosophy. Their stories are decent, especially for younger viewers, and some characters are well developed and memorable. It just is that they are not consistent, even within one movie. For example, Despicable me 3 has a greatly designed villain, but that part of the storyline is messy and filled with plot holes, and while the brothers storyline was much more heartwarming, it was also underdeveloped due to the villain taking up so much screen time: typical Illumination mix of good and bad elements. They do have quality control, but their goals also aren't high like Pixar to make great movies.
One last thing, Blue Sky Studios was great too, as well as the “NOT” pointless Ice Age sequels. And I don’t think DreamWorks is Disney’s rival anymore. They are now just doing spin-off projects like TV shows. Both 2D and 3D.
I commend you strongly for attempting to defend this company, I was planning to myself. They're certainly not the worst animation studio at all, they put out decent to pretty good movies.

Illumination isn’t the worst. They just don’t care about making a compelling story that leaves a lasting impact on its viewers. Also, if you grew up with Studio Ghibli and other amazing works like the HTTYD trilogy and Disney and Pixar’s best works, your standards become too high for Illumination to meet
For me The reason i loved Illumination is how amazing and realistic the animation is including the music which in my option is lit i loved movies from them like despicable me 1 and 2 secret life of pets sing and the Grinch i just hope they make something new and original in the future
I can't say I would agree that Illumination is GOOD, even though it is successful. Their movies do not feel like actual entertainment, but mere kid distracters meant for LITTLE kids and no one else above that. That's why I cannot take them seriously as an animation studio that's in the leagues of Disney, Pixar, or even Dreamworks.
I'm sorry Animat but the heartful moments are too quick and too shallow for me. Gru and the minions's relationship was so poorly done in D3. The reason why it turned out that way is that the movie had so many subplots and the writers couldn't show them going through the emotions of missing Gru. They seemed to be doing just fine without him honestly. IIIumination Entertainment needs better writers and character designers.
With Nintendo working closely with Illumination and having creative control, I know it will be close to how the Mario franchise should be. But storytelling isn't Nintendo's strong suit. (At least when it comes to Mario) so it's possible it could be a fun and enjoyable movie but with a plot and story that falls a bit flat and generic.
I don't really agree on good characters, I mean some character designs are just so bland, like the minions for example as they are simply copied and pasted to save budgets. Not to mention the numerous assets they reuse, as well as the purposefully low budgets being very shady.

YES! Thank you, I've had a few similar thoughts to Illumination, and you also bring up other solid points that I didn't consider! Not a single film that I've seen so far from Illumination have I disliked (Minions was okay, but everything else was either good or great IMO), and I'm proud to be a fan of theirs.

I definitely think you have a point with that "Underdog" theory, except you missed a trick. It's not just that Illumination is on top, it's that they came out of nowhere, soared to the top, and haven't had any flops or had to work their way up to the top. Like, Disney was the first and they had a slow path to make their movies. Add to that the fact they've been around forever, and people will think of them as untouchable giant, perhaps even a touch of "they were my childhood". Meanwhile, Illumination comes out of nowhere, starts generating success after success with little to no effort like the jock in the high school who is just better than you at everything without ever having to try. That's probably why so many nerds are unleashing their scathing attacks on this big, successful company that makes mostly inoffensive films. (I say mostly inoffensive because they have a generous dose of fart jokes in there.)

Your arguments for why people hate them don't make a lot of sense. Surely, their critics would have to have bought a ticket to see the film in order to see if it's good and the target demographic is children who aren't as critically aware. So how is it critics fault the film is successful exactly when they're only buying one ticket and discouraging people from seeing them? Also, the underdog scenario doesn't hold water with what you're implying. For example, dislike/hate Disney's Live Action reboots because they are safe, low effort and inferior to the originals. At the same time, films like Zootopia, Coco, and Moana are praise for being animated masterpieces and they make a shit load of money. your assessment is flawed
I think you really hit the mark with this video, but I will say I disagree with your opinion on the Dr. Seuss films. Not only do they have Illumination’s best animation, but also some of the hardest hitting emotional beats from the studio. Sure, there’s some filler, but for the most part Illumination does a really good job finding creative ways to expand the story while staying faithful to the themes of the original. Blue Sky’s Horton Hears a Who has all the same problems, yet that film is widely beloved for its creativity and heartfelt story. Why does the same not apply for The Lorax and The Grinch?
I want to give illumination a chance after seeing Minions Rise of gru and them making the Mario movie cuz I avoided illumination after seeing so many criticism about it from content creators but THIS VIDEO made me see a different perspective and I'm glad this was made cuz I'm now enjoying the fun that illumination has given us. I agree with pretty much all of your points, AniMat. A lot of people want to stop and look at Illumination as a bad studio with stupid jokes and characters. However, I think that Illumination is a good studio. Not the best like Disney and Pixar(although Disney failed with frozen, my opinion don’t attack me), but when it comes to the story and the messages of movies, illumination has passed through those categories. Some of the characters are tolerable, and yeah some can be annoying like what people say about the minions, but I don’t find the minions worth hating about. Of course, to some extent they are not laugh out loud funny but they do try their best to be. And I hate how people like to judge based on the looks of things and don’t appreciate the passion and work that are put into these films. They just like to think, “Oh, they are just pointless kids movies”, when really they are more than that. They are prefect for all audiences. And I understand you’re opinion and you don’t have to agree with me. Keep being yourself and don’t let others, especially the haters out their get to you. The best thing Illumination Studios has is its marketing team. They know how to sell a movie. And the animation is cheap but efficient.

Honest Opinions spider verse had a tighter budget than most animated studios (The Star bombed with Sony Animations) so they had to get creative. In Blue Sky's defense, they had their Spider-Verse moment with The Peanuts Movie. Granted they followed that film up with Ice Age 5 so what do I know.
Also in Blue Sky’s defense I believe several employees have outright said that they didn’t want to make anymore after 3 but Fox keeps forcing them into it since Ice Age before 5 printed money. Honestly I wonder how the studio will do now since Disney bought Fox’s entertainment subsidiaries? Will Disney Animation/Pixar have more creative control or will they let Blue Sky just do their own thing?

Except The Peanuts Movie (which I think is overrated) wasn't really acclaimed like Spider-Verse, but rather just got better reviews. I feel like it's their Arthur Christmas. So yeah, Blue Sky still had a long way to go before having their Spider-Verse moment.

@SolarChroniclesXII I'm don't have a particular problem with toy story 4. I don't think it's a cash grab or pixar not wanting to let go of the franchise. I think it's that pixar knew how much kids and adults loved the first 3 films and wanted to give the "Even NEWER" generation a chance to experience it. Pixar had even also announced it as their last sequel. So there's nothing to hate about it unless the film is bad. We just have to wait a few more weeks🙂.
One of the most notable differences that I've seen with illumination is that they are not afraid of violence as much as these other animation studios have been. Some of their films even have death portrayed in a comical way. In some ways, it's nice to see that risk being taken.

And I find that to be a good thing. I've been rooting against Disney ever since I found out The Lion King (1994) was actually actually a complete rip off of an older animation called "Kimba the White Lion". And the fact that Disney actually tried to sue *them* disgusts me- as it should've been vice versa. At least Illumination hasn't done something like that as far as I'm aware.

You see marvel and Sony made a deal to include spidey in the mcu but Sony still has the film rights and while Sony owns the film rights and distributed/produced homecoming and the upcoming far from home marvel came up with the story and the entire production. So in a nutshell Sony still has the film rights but marvel and Sony are collaborating the mcu Spider-Man movies

I feel like people tend to constantly expect deep emotions and stories out of modern animated films, so we forget that simplicity isn't always a bad thing.
an animated movie can be simple and still be really good. Isle of Dogs has a very simple story and was one of the best animated movies of last year. Illumination movies are simple in the wrong way, that way being "lazy".

Clearly there's a good reason that children and adults alike watch Illumination films, whether you like them or not. The problem is not that they are bad, it is that they are overly marketing mediocre (which means they have plenty of very good aspects but also many weak points) movies like they are masterpieces.
In addition their quality seems to be in a slight declining trend overall since the start of their filmography.
Oh yeah, and they produce the worst animated moves ever that earned over 800 million (except perhaps Ice Age)

Yep. That's my motto for these guys too. Honestly, the best advice I can offer is lay off the Despicable Me for a while. It had a good two films. It got a fun ride. But then Illumination oversaturated the franchise to the point where it looked too much like a brand than an actual story, causing The Minions to look more like mascots than characters. The best thing Illumination can do right now is focus on on other projects after Minions 2 before it becomes their Ice Age.

You put IHE as an example for someone who dislikes Illumination but you completely ignored his main point. The point being that the studio has a mentality of using the least amount of effort for maximum profit. I do believe that the animators working in the studio have potential and the movies themselves are not completely bad, the problem I have with them is that they feel like no one really cared about the value of the movies other than making money (the minions are great example of that both in mechandise and the movie which felt rushed and without a soul). I can't really blame the studio for wanting to make money but my problem is that it takes priority on every othe aspect of movie making. It's also true that Sony and Blue skies made the same mistakes and maybe we should really hate on them more, but it still doesn't excuse Illumination's behavior either.
Lastly I wanted to say disagree on what you said about Illumination's movies being character driven and having good characters, they don't, they have mediocre characters at best, I watched most of the movies mentioned and never felt like a character had more than an 'aww' moment. There are so many great characters in animation movies, especially in some of the Pixar movies, and compare them to the characters in despicable me, can you still tell me that their characters are as good?

Well, I'll give Illumination credit for this, they definitely knows how to market the hell out of their movies where you literally can't escape from them no matter how much you tried and all of their movies are decently animated and are all not bad but average and after almost a decade of their movies being average and be nothing more than that, that is a big problem because after being around for almost a decade, is this really what Illumination wants their legacy to be known for? Creating nothing but mediocre animated junk that may make a lot of money now but won't age well over time and will never be highly regarded compared to their main competition?
Where is that animated movie that can show to critics and audiences where they can have the potential to reinvent their tired old image and be taken very seriously as a major competitor with the rest of the best and well respected animation studios in Hollywood? Disney/Pixar and DreamWorks are the top dogs for a reason and sure, not every movie they release is great but when they do, they can be. As the rest like Blue Sky, they at least have The Peanuts Movie and just last year, Sony Pictures Animation released Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse but where is Illumination's equivalent to those films? Judging by Illumination's standards, Nintendo shouldn't be surprised if Illumination churns out a mediocre movie of their beloved IP that doesn't live up to their usually high standards.
Overall, while I also don't think that Illumination is that bad either, I am really not a fan of them either for consistently being the most mediocre animation film studio in the industry working today. I mean, as much as you keep bashing Sony Pictures Animation in the past but judging by the response to how they handled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, at least SPA is finally deciding to stop being seen as a complete joke by The Emoji Movie and just take chances to be taken more seriously as a major competitor but I really can't say the same for Illumination due to them being too cowardly to take any major chances.

Honestly, the only Illumination film i hate is Hop, even then it gets more of a "What the hell were they thinking?" reaction out of me.

I will say that Illumination certainly has come a long way and how successful most of them are.
It has a style that definitely stands out, I will say.
They never were a bad studio as they had some good movies. I have to admit I’m not a fan of their animation style because it looks a bit off.
Ben Jackson Yeah, I have noticed throughout all of their films, they pretty much use the same style on all of their characters, which makes them overly recognisable.
Still, it’s a style I personally like and is a unique selling point for the company. By the way, it’s very surprising how they managed to persuade Trey Parker, co creator of South Park, to voice Balthazar Bratt for DM3 and how they got Family Guy creator, Seth McFarlane, to voice the mouse in Sing. Though, the latter is more flexible than Trey, who is more comfortable with producing South Park. I wonder if Matt Stone, or Matt Groening, will do the same?
Ben Jackson Personally, I’d love to see other cartoon director/voice actors have more prominent roles in animated features. Such as Seth Green and Justin Roiland, the creators of Robot Chicken and Rick and Morty respectively.
Justin could put his own unique R&M-styled humour into an animated film, but less of the dirty sweary stuff if said film is aimed at kids. But if he were to produce, or star in an animated movie aimed at an older audience, then that’s a different kettle of fish, but more appropriate to his style of humour and target audience.

Yeah, so many people just assume it'll be bad because it's being produced by illumination and directed by the same guy who gave us Despicable Me, but many seem to forget that Nintendo's staff is overseeing the project to make sure it turns out right. That's the only reason they even green lit it in the first place.

I love the fact that for once I got to see someone at least talk great about Illumination. It's great to see something unique. I'm not always interested in seeing their films but there have been some films that I did see in theaters like Sing which is my main favorite film of theirs and I did choose The Secret Life of Pets over the new Ghostbusters movie on my 23rd birthday. :)

Fun Fact: Chris Meledandri, the founder and current CEO of Illumination was the former president of 20th Century Fox Animation, where he executive produced the first two Ice Age movies, Robots, and Horton Hears A Who with Blue Sky.

I admire you for discussing the positive aspects of Illumination Entertainment, even though I don't care for most of their movies, excluding "Despicable Me 1" and "Sing." I'll just list my own positives from the IE films I saw:
"Despicable Me 1&2": Gru and his relationship with his family and minions, the crazy gadgets they use, some genuinely funny jokes/lines (i.e. IT'S SO FLUFFY!)
"The Lorax": wonderfully adapting Dr. Seuss' art style into CGI, some bonding moments between the Lorax and the Onceler, Danny DeVito's performance as the Lorax himself
"Secret Life of Pets": some nice animal designs, the various activities the pets do without their owners around, and the heartbreaking backstory for the big dog
"Sing": the wide variety of songs they sing (Ha!), some likable characters, and rotating between multiple characters throughout the film
I too am one of the people of Earth who actually likes Illumination and this video, along with Bobsheaux's Minion review are refreshing reviews of Minions because I am so sick and tired or people bashing the show with the same complaints over and over again. If they hate it, that's fine but when they do review it, it's all the same. This video was such a breath of fresh air.
Also, I don't hear too much flack from the employees working at Illumination. I remember a lot of women were not comfortable when working at Pixar when John Lasseter was involved and when several Dreamworks animation films bombed in 2014, several well known staff were fired because of it, including Conrad Vernon, director of Shrek 2 and Monsters vs Alien who would later work on Sausage Party and the Emoji Movie. Do I have to say about those angry letters Sony recieved?

Exactly, I’m honestly sick and tired of people calling Illumination the worst animation studio ever only because of the Minions and rumors of them “copying and pasting” models. Here are my thoughts on each and every film Illumination has ever made: Despicable Me (Good), Hop (Their worst film ever made), The Lorax (very bad), Despicable Me 2 (Fantastic), Minions (Okay), Secret Life of Pets (Mediocre), Sing (Good), Despicable Me 3 (Meh), The Grinch (Good), and Secret Life of Pets 2 (has some potential, but it’s most likely gonna suck).
In all honesty there is one studio that is honestly worse than Illumination; and no, to me it’s not Sony Pictures Animation because they’ve actually made some good and okay films such as Arthur Christmas, Pirates Band of Misfits, Hotel Transylvania, Goosebumps (2015), The Angry Birds Movie (mostly the film’s climax and ending), and Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse. Anyways the one studio that has made much worse animated films than Illumination is The Weinstein Company (their only good animated film was Hoodwinked and that’s it)
Some of Sony’s movies are not just good they are great. I’m referring To Surfs Up, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, Arthur Christmas, Pirates Band Of Misfits, Spiderverse etc

I prefer blue sky over illumination tbh. With them, I never really see a bad character, it’s pretty rare in all honesty. And their animation is some of the most creative and beautiful I’ve seen. The only problem I’d say they have is that they don’t really know how to use old and new characters at times.

Illumination is already a step down in animation capabilities compared to major studios due to their lower budget philosophy. Their stories are decent, especially for younger viewers, and some characters are well developed and memorable. It just is that they are not consistent, even within one movie. For example, Despicable me 3 has a greatly designed villain, but that part of the storyline is messy and filled with plot holes, and while the brothers storyline was much more heartwarming, it was also underdeveloped due to the villain taking up so much screen time: typical Illumination mix of good and bad elements. They do have quality control, but their goals also aren't high like Pixar to make great movies.
I'm currently awaiting the premiere of the secret life of pets 2.

One last thing, Blue Sky Studios was great too, as well as the “NOT” pointless Ice Age sequels. And I don’t think DreamWorks is Disney’s rival anymore. They are now just doing spin-off projects like TV shows. Both 2D and 3D.
I commend you strongly for attempting to defend this company, I was planning to myself. They're certainly not the worst animation studio at all, they put out decent to pretty good movies.

Illumination is a company where they make family friendly one of my favorite films is the Secret life of pets.
Personally I like the first Toy Story (which it totally ripped off) better, but hey, you're allowed to have that opinion, I won't judge you.
Illumination isn’t the worst. They just don’t care about making a compelling story that leaves a lasting impact on its viewers. Also, if you grew up with Studio Ghibli and other amazing works like the HTTYD trilogy and Disney and Pixar’s best works, your standards become too high for Illumination to meet
For me The reason i loved Illumination is how amazing and realistic the animation is including the music which in my option is lit i loved movies from them like despicable me 1 and 2 secret life of pets sing and the Grinch i just hope they make something new and original in the future
I can't say I would agree that Illumination is GOOD, even though it is successful. Their movies do not feel like actual entertainment, but mere kid distracters meant for LITTLE kids and no one else above that. That's why I cannot take them seriously as an animation studio that's in the leagues of Disney, Pixar, or even Dreamworks.
I'm sorry Animat but the heartful moments are too quick and too shallow for me. Gru and the minions's relationship was so poorly done in D3. The reason why it turned out that way is that the movie had so many subplots and the writers couldn't show them going through the emotions of missing Gru. They seemed to be doing just fine without him honestly. IIIumination Entertainment needs better writers and character designers.
If Illumination ever gets really good, it'll probably be the Mario Movie.
With Nintendo working closely with Illumination and having creative control, I know it will be close to how the Mario franchise should be.
But storytelling isn't Nintendo's strong suit. (At least when it comes to Mario) so it's possible it could be a fun and enjoyable movie but with a plot and story that falls a bit flat and generic.

I don't really agree on good characters, I mean some character designs are just so bland, like the minions for example as they are simply copied and pasted to save budgets.
Not to mention the numerous assets they reuse, as well as the purposefully low budgets being very shady.

YES! Thank you, I've had a few similar thoughts to Illumination, and you also bring up other solid points that I didn't consider! Not a single film that I've seen so far from Illumination have I disliked (Minions was okay, but everything else was either good or great IMO), and I'm proud to be a fan of theirs.

I definitely think you have a point with that "Underdog" theory, except you missed a trick. It's not just that Illumination is on top, it's that they came out of nowhere, soared to the top, and haven't had any flops or had to work their way up to the top. Like, Disney was the first and they had a slow path to make their movies. Add to that the fact they've been around forever, and people will think of them as untouchable giant, perhaps even a touch of "they were my childhood". Meanwhile, Illumination comes out of nowhere, starts generating success after success with little to no effort like the jock in the high school who is just better than you at everything without ever having to try. That's probably why so many nerds are unleashing their scathing attacks on this big, successful company that makes mostly inoffensive films. (I say mostly inoffensive because they have a generous dose of fart jokes in there.)

Your arguments for why people hate them don't make a lot of sense.
Surely, their critics would have to have bought a ticket to see the film in order to see if it's good and the target demographic is children who aren't as critically aware. So how is it critics fault the film is successful exactly when they're only buying one ticket and discouraging people from seeing them?
Also, the underdog scenario doesn't hold water with what you're implying. For example, dislike/hate Disney's Live Action reboots because they are safe, low effort and inferior to the originals. At the same time, films like Zootopia, Coco, and Moana are praise for being animated masterpieces and they make a shit load of money.

I think you really hit the mark with this video, but I will say I disagree with your opinion on the Dr. Seuss films.
Not only do they have Illumination’s best animation, but also some of the hardest hitting emotional beats from the studio. Sure, there’s some filler, but for the most part Illumination does a really good job finding creative ways to expand the story while staying faithful to the themes of the original.
Blue Sky’s Horton Hears a Who has all the same problems, yet that film is widely beloved for its creativity and heartfelt story. Why does the same not apply for The Lorax and The Grinch?
I want to give illumination a chance after seeing Minions Rise of gru and them making the Mario movie cuz I avoided illumination after seeing so many criticism about it from content creators but THIS VIDEO made me see a different perspective and I'm glad this was made cuz I'm now enjoying the fun that illumination has given us. I agree with pretty much all of your points, AniMat. A lot of people want to stop and look at Illumination as a bad studio with stupid jokes and characters. However, I think that Illumination is a good studio. Not the best like Disney and Pixar(although Disney failed with frozen, my opinion don’t attack me), but when it comes to the story and the messages of movies, illumination has passed through those categories. Some of the characters are tolerable, and yeah some can be annoying like what people say about the minions, but I don’t find the minions worth hating about. Of course, to some extent they are not laugh out loud funny but they do try their best to be. And I hate how people like to judge based on the looks of things and don’t appreciate the passion and work that are put into these films. They just like to think, “Oh, they are just pointless kids movies”, when really they are more than that. They are prefect for all audiences.
And I understand you’re opinion and you don’t have to agree with me. Keep being yourself and don’t let others, especially the haters out their get to you. You are an amazing UA-camr and make such wonderful content. Have a great day and take care of yourself. 😊👍
