I remember enjoying Despicable Me. I was not a kid. I saw it with my family when I was home from college. I can't remember any specifics about it. I remember laughing but not any of the jokes. What I do remember appreciating was that it showed a single father as a normal thing, and that fatherhood itself was an okay thing to want (rather than needing to be part of a marriage and passing on your own genes). Plus, he was adopting girls, and they had unique personalities that weren't just one cliché trait. They weren't exactly developed, but they also weren't formulaic like 'girl-boss' or 'inventor girl' or 'not-like-the-other-girls'. And there was no romance subplot! It may not be a great movie, but I think those aspects make it worth sharing.
What I hate most about illumination is that they make animation look like a "children's thing" filled with an endless well of shallow idiocy, and causing the general public to view any animated product as one and the same.
I wanted to be a voice actor when I was a kid since I wasn't super comfortable acting on stage or on camera but I loved to try to make voices and really stretch out the ol vocal cords. Movies like these made me look at other career options as I tread through college.
Fair enough! The Lorax actually hurt me. I saw it in theaters, back then, couldn’t figure out why I didn’t like it. As the years went on, the pieces finally came together.
Ah the Mario movie. As a LONGTIME Mario fan who wants to see another good animated film(One that actually has a chance at success and isn’t relegated to VHS with some fandubs.), I was very sad to learn Illumination is involved. Mario and Sonic’s movie careers feel like they’re from a parallel world where Nintendo lost the console wars. Except again, maybe the Mario anime film
The sad thing is there’s almost no chance that it will be worse than any of Mario’s other animated excursions. As well loved as the “Super Mario Super Show” is it has a ton of animation errors and flat out insane storylines. The thing is that I don’t want a just OK Mario movie. I want something that’ll actually captivate me especially since I’m a huge fan. I just really don’t want to be let down.
@@gwenofair628 Yeah the Mushroom Kingdom is this wealth of surreal imagery and creative creatures, I want something bizarre and spectacular. The last thing a movie set in the Mario universe should be is bland and just meh or average
@@gwenofair628 Nintendo’s making the same mistakes already. Lightmotive offers them some creative control, they choose them. Illumination offers them some creative control, apparently that’s all the criteria they have.
Man, The Lorax is such missed potential. If they just focused on the Onceler with his descent towards evil and making the cut song Biggering the basis of the story, it could have been something special. Illumination could have had that memorable Biggering moment that could rival Disney's Hellfire, but their corporate "pride" would have taken a hit. Such a waste indeed.
I do genuinely like the first Despicable Me. The sequels get progressively worse. Lorax is awful. The 70s special is much better, watch that instead Edit: Oh he did! Sweet!
I like to think that the first Despicable Me is...cute, harmless, low-stakes fun. Then it dissolves into minion pandering and the kids are shoved aside lol
Haha of course I watched the special! It was my favorite Dr. Seuss special along with the Grinch! And yeah, the Minion crap took center stage, I felt like if they scaled back on the Minions, and went in more on the family stuff, it could’ve been so much better.
Man oh man! I can't tell you how much of an underrated UA-camr you are! The first video I watched by you was that abysmal nostalgia critic review (which I've watched three times by now), and I've been subbed ever since. You bring a lot of humor and charisma and intelligence to your videos. You're mad funny! You actually appreciate film and music, and you incorporate them so well in your videos. I hope you keep rocking on, Matt! And the Dead Meat reference was a great addition, too. Also, Maya is SO PRECIOUS! 💜
Wow, thank you so much! I try my best, and I love making these! Keep watching and I'll keep makin' 'em! We had a lot of fun with this one specifically, especially the Dead Meat bit! And you're right, Maya is the best! 😋
Luckily, I think the rights are no longer with Illumination for future Dr. Seuss adaptations, but I can definitely see them tackling that or Hop on Pop!
Hop is basically about Russell Brand's fursona, which wouldn't be too far off considering Russell's Chinese zodiac sign is the Rabbit. And judging by the behind the scenes material....it seems he kind of viewed himself as a rabbit otherkin. Also Hank Azaria voices the other little chick who at first I thought was voiced by either Matt Stone or Trey Parker because that little chick sounded a lot like Butters or Cartman.
@@mattammarofficial yes that actually happened at the end of the movie they didn’t actually show the bear eat them but he was hanging onto the back of their car and smiled maliciously so he didn’t actually eat them but it was heavily implied
I recently saw a trailer for an animated movie called "The Bad Guys" and I swear, I assumed it was another Illumination movie based on the character designs and animation until I saw the Dreamworks name show up. Great work on this video, Matt btw
The only Illumination movie I watched was The Secret Life of Pets. To say it was a mediocre viewing experience would be an understatement. I immediately picked up on the movie being a Toy Story rip-off.
I’m gonna keep my fingers crossed that Nintendo is making most of the decisions, and all Illumination is doing is animating it, but who knows? It’s weirdly a much anticipated movie for me, due to morbid curiosity.
Cumberbatch as the Grinch had me really excited. Because I saw him in roles like Smaug and thought, wow this is perfect. Then the full trailer came out and it’s like the filmmakers were actively trying to crap all over their own casting. Yes, when I think Benedict Cumberbatch as Grinch, I think someone trying their best to imitate a whiny prep girl. Cue Krusty “What the Hell was that?” meme Edit: Oh wow the video just took the words out of my mouth lol. Been watching this in chunks and that was hilarious
Haha I loved reading the realization of where you were in the video! 😆 But yeah, I couldn’t believe they actually screwed up such a great opportunity with Cumberbatch. There is a slight chance he made that decision, but I doubt it haha
I think it was Ben himself that opted to do that voice instead of his normal one. idk if this is true but i read/heard it somewhere from an interview I guess? i don't remember much sry
While it won't solve the inherent issue in chopping up the original narrative of the animals leaving into a montage, I strongly suggest you check out the original demo for "Biggering," the song that was cut and turned into How Bad Can I Be. It's in the style of a rock opera with some killer vocals and a way darker, cooler tone than the final product; it's a sign that under the mediocrity at Illumination, there's some real creativity. No doubt it got cut because it hit a little too close to home for the suits at corporate.
I've seen it! I agree, it wouldn't change my opinion of the film in the grand scheme of things, but I also agree that the movie is way worse off without it! Definitely a studio decision. These high ranking execs don't wanna feel bad!
*My take on Dr. Seuss feature films* • How the Grinch Stole Christmas (awfulmovies.miraheze.org/wiki/How_the_Grinch_Stole_Christmas_(2000) I respect that you people actually like this movie, and you all would have very good reasons to, but me, I would always just stick with the original version as a fan of 20th Century Dr. Seuss • The Cat in the Hat (pretty awful because it’s one the most visually unappealing films with the exception of the underrated vehicle the S.L.O.W., but there are a few more good qualities of this film that while they don’t make the movie a fraction as great as all other The Cat in the Hat works like not only the original , but also The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss besttvshows.miraheze.org/wiki/The_Wubbulous_World_of_Dr._Seuss, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That, both the books and show besttvshows.miraheze.org/wiki/User:SonicClub/sandbox/The_Cat_in_the_Hat_Knows_a_Lot_About_That!, they keep them away from being one of the worst movies up to the ranks of... we’ll get to it later. awfulmovies.miraheze.org/wiki/Dr._Seuss%27_The_Cat_in_the_Hat_(2003)) • Horton Hears a Who (m.ua-cam.com/video/tvQ2u6Scy_U/v-deo.html) • The Lorax (okay, maybe it would be an overstatement to consider this Illumination adaptation one of the worst films of all time, but even by Illumination standards, I would still consider it to be its weakest film. Of course, with that said, it makes the definitive version of The Lorax look like even more of a masterpiece than ever before! awfulmovies.miraheze.org/wiki/The_Lorax ) • The Grinch (It’s the most surprisingly tolerable Illumination film, but of course, it’s not all that good. 1:14 I love alliteration. 😀 7:24 To this day, it annoys me that Megamind wasn't the success that Despicable Me was. 19:02 I was playing *Yakuza: Like A Dragon* last night, and it had a similar plot point. [Spoilers, skip over this part if you don't want to know] Bleach Japan (a group that claims they want to rid Japan of all grey zones) supposedly got more members not because they wanted to actually help their country, but because of a popular politician had a rivalry with another politician that wasn't under his control, and people were paid to join. When the public show that this popular senator was a part of a group that supposedly wanted to help root out corruption, the group itself became trending. Some women were even paid to join to balance their numbers. They joined...because it was trendy.
Megamind definitely got overshadowed by Despicable Me. Imagine the universe where that succeeds and Despicable Me failed! I’m still planning on playing Yakuza at some point, so thanks for the spoiler warning! 😄
@@mattammarofficial Yakuza is *well* worth it. It also has trainers for at least 3 of the games (Zero, Kiwami, and Kiwami 2 to be pacific), so...maybe consider PC? That aside, check it out.
Cinco Paul since created, showran and wrote all the songs for Schmigadoon, an immaculate musical theatre homage. So he's obviously talented. He also wrote a much better and darker song for The Onceler which didn't make it into the film. I wonder whether since shedding Ken Daurio as his writing partner he's been less hamstrung by the need to play it so safe and bland.
I’ve heard nothing but good things about Schmidadoon! I’ll have to give it a shot! Maybe he was just bogged down by all of Illumination’s mandates? Also, it’s insane that that song doesn’t exist within the film, seeing that it’s actually based on the damn book!
I'll admit, I was only smiling a bit as this video started. Not even those sick rhymes got me to laugh, but fuckin share the load? You win this round, sir
I’m sick of lazy films and story having the same repetitive story over and over again. As a young person trying to make a own horror novel franchise, I have spent months making the entire franchise and monster designs as unique and creative in concept of lost friends and the mystery of human suffering. There is one message, no one is purely evil. No jumpscares included. I hate illumination for not making anything original in terms of characters and story writing.
Whiling the Mario movie seems hopeless, they finally hired some new blood: -They hired Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (best known for being behind Teen Titans GO!) are the directors, and this is only their 2nd time doing a movie after Teen Titans GO! To The Movies which from what i heard isn't that bad -They also hired Matthew Fogel (writer of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part), actually they hired him 2 years ago for co-writer of Minions: The Rise of Gru (which was delayed by a year a second time now); otherwise he's the only writer of the Mario movie -They even have Dick Figures co-creator Ed Skudder as the head of the story -And possibly the least important one but Miyamoto himself is co-producer as well Probably still not convincing enough tho
We'll see what happens! I actually think Charlie Day as Luigi is inspired casting. But, with Illumination's track record, it's hard to be excited. But I'll withhold judgement until I see it (and probably review it.)
Making a Despicable Me prequel about the minions is the equivalent of making a prequel to Spider-Man all about the symbiote before it landed in Central Park.
I would like to think that the Mario movie will be good but given Illumination’s track record of pissing on the legacies of popular Intellectual Properties I’m having serious doubts here. Plus I have no idea why they decided to cast Chris Pratt out of all people as Mario. I have not seen him attempt any accents in any of the big blockbuster movies he’s been in so I have no idea if he will be able to pull off an Italian accent (or even a Brooklyn accent) without sounding totally cringe. I do see Charlie Day pulling off a decent Luigi since his work on IASIP pretty much speaks for itself.
The 1993 movie is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, but the one thing I think the movie does unironically right is the casting of Mario and Luigi. I actually thought Charlie Day was inspired casting, but Chris Pratt? Nah. Also, did you see he's playing Garfield too? What's happening?!
Not gonna lie, you're probably the first channel I've stumbled upon that has tempted me into rewatching all your videos and making a compilation edit. Maybe something along the lines of "Matt Realizing Life is Meaningless"; case in point: 10:21
I don't know what to say. I'm stuck! Of course, I love this video. You are a fantastic critic, and one of the two most underrated and underappreciated reviewers here on UA-cam. Your critiques solidly describe a movies flaws (especially in this video's case) and/or strengths. Forgive me and my lack of self esteem and needing of reassurance, but I don't see why there's so much hate for these movies. I mean, I can see why you don't like them, but most of these movies I really like, or even kind of love. Forgive me for being the overly positive person some God made me be, but I never was a critical person. If I do get too critical or serious, I'd probably be more stressed out, and I'm way too emotionally imbalanced to be stressed out. I'd rather be happy. It's ok if you don't like these movies (it honestly should be ok, because it always will be), I just feel like it's a bad thing that I LIKE these movies. Why do I have to be the odd one out? Is it so bad to feel or believe that these movies are kind of good? I feel wrong feeling the way I feel. It makes me sad that what appears to be a vast majority of people who enjoy animated films really hate these movies. I feel like garbage. I feel terrible. Why is everyone so critical? Why is everyone pessimistic? Why is everyone so mean, nasty, angry?! Anyways, thanks for listening to my rant. Everyone's going to hate this comment and me, and if anyone who's watched this video and seen this comment think I'm wrong about how I feel, fuck you. That's all.
Thank you for the comment! Let me just say this: Don't ever feel ashamed of what you like. Enjoy what you want, as long as you're not hurting anyone. I am only a dude on the internet sharing my own personal feelings and experiences, I'm not an expert, and I tend to use hyperbole for entertainment. You can agree or disagree with me depending on your feelings and experiences. Be proud of your opinions, again, as long as it's not negatively impacting someone. Just keep an open mind when it comes to media, and expand your horizons! 😊
Love the dead meat joke. As for it's always sunny in Philadelphia, it's a good show. I live in Philly and I once them film a stunt from season 4 from the 4th floor of my high school (back when I was a high school student, of course)
Todd in the Shadows, during his pop song reviews, always defines the worst pop songs by not the songs that are the most bad, but the songs that are the least good. that's how I feel about it most of the time as well, because if something's bad ENOUGH, I can sort of enjoy it by shaking my head and going "wow. amazing." I'll have bad movie viewings with friends, but as this video shows, nobody wants to do an illumination marathon.
@@mattammarofficial For me, it’s hard (but not impossible per-se) to pinpoint which lowest level of quality is worse, between complete mediocrity and complete unpleasantness. I guess with Illumination, I can at least laugh at how bad (or meh) it is with its adorable/goofy albeit in a noticeably, infamously childish way (with the fattish designs like the Minions, Gidget (Gidget: I’m not fat! It’s my fur that’s puffy!) and other The Secret Life of Pets 1 & 2 characters (re: Katie’s son, Duke, the baby tiger, Snowball, etc), Gunther (and some other Sing 1 & 2 characters), the reindeer and Who children in the Grinch (which, btw, I unironically like, especially by Illumination standards) and the stylized (yet also live-action) animals in Hop) while there will always be objectively worse movies out there because of just how unadmittedly mean-spirited they are by rationalizing double standards like racism and sexism (re: Nickelodeon Movies (re: Fun Size, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie sequels, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1 & 2, Lemony Snicker’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, Barnyard (f*** Miles for killing the farmer with his one kick), The Last Airbender, Playing With Fire, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Wonder Park, The Rugrats Movie trilogy (then again, I expect no less from something as boringly immature as Rugrats), Monsters Trucks and so much more), The Birth of a Nation 1915, the live-action Transformers movies before Bumblebee (like, damn it, Sam Witwicky! If a woman doesn’t like you (or does but hates that you cheated on them), then it’s not the end of the world!), some DCOMs (re: the ones with Zendaya who deserved so much better than Frenemies and Zapped!) Charlie’s Angels 2019, the Don Bluth films between All Dogs Go to Heaven 1 & Anastasia (they do have people that have a soft spot for them no matter how much they may have disliked it from an objective standpoint because of 1990s hand-drawn nostalgia so let’s just let it be that way while we have our own opinions), the live-action Disney remakes, Ghostbusters 2016, Norm of the North (mainly Keys to the Kingdom), Ralph Breaks the Internet, Trolls 1 & 2, Batman v Superman, Cuties (f*** Black Critic Guy for defending this and those reboots of Cartoon Network shows, and this is coming from a CN fan… for the most part), etc)
Hollywood likes New York so much that 99% of their movies happens in this city. If this is not a huge ego, i don't know what it is X) Seriously, they could be more diverse and make movies about India, Italy, Japan, Africa, Canada. I want to see one in Romania but sadly it won't happen. Can you imagined a good animated movie in Romania? Sounds fun! Ah yes, the studio who ruined the Lorax and the Grinch; who created the Minions and a lame Toy story rip-off (Secret life of pets.) He also made a boring and unfunny long add about Emojis, that was awful XS
@@mattammarofficial Heck yeah, more countries to see in animation will be fun... if it's well done of course. I really hope we'll get movies in Romania, Italy, Africa, Peru etc.

I am glad to see that the emperors new groove is getting more acknowledged for being as funny as it is and in my opinion out of all the Disney movies that came out in the 2000’s that is probably my favorite other than meet the Robinsons
While I think most movies from Illumination are not good, I actually like Despicable Me (the first one, and despite the animation, it's still one of the best movies they have come up with in my opinion - though, I did not like the minions and I saw it in theaters with my friends when we were young, so it could also be my nostalgic love for it) as well as Sing (not the songs and not many of the characters, but I like the story line of the mouse guy trying to make his theater back to it's glory days - I thought that was interesting).
That's totally fine! I understand to an extent. I don't really hate a lot of these, I'm mostly indifferent. It was just A LOT of indifference at once haha
28:36 - 28:42 Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. Whoa, hold on there, buddy. The 1998 Godzilla movie (along with the Heisei series and Godzilla 2000) helped me become a Godzilla fan since I was 2 (I know, I'm surprised too) and it did the same for many other fans as well with that movie being their first introduction to the King of the Monsters. So I wouldn't call it an abomination, but I would call it poorly handled film that could've been better than how it was presented. Despite the problems it has, for me at least, the positives outweigh the negatives. Most of the positives I gathered are: some of the human characters (Dr. Niko "Nick" Tatopoulos, Philippe Roaché, Victor "Animal" Palotti and Colonel Anthony Hicks), the locations, the story, the atmosphere, the tone, the action, some of the humor, the sets, the miniatures, the special effects, the soundtrack, the CGI, the Godzilla and Baby Godzilla suits, the animatronics, the raptor inspired Baby Godzillas, the unique take on Godzilla himself along with different abilities and the references towards the original Gojira film. Also Godzilla: The Series made me love the 1998 Godzilla movie even more. It made some of the least liked human characters (Dr. Mendel Craven, Dr. Elsie Chapman and Audrey Timmons) more likable along with making some characters I liked from the movie even better as well. Plus let's be honest, there are some installments in the Godzilla franchise even more weaker than Godzilla 1998 (bit of a disclaimer: I actually don't hate any of the Godzilla movies), like All Monsters Attack/Godzilla's Revenge, Godzilla Vs. Megalon and Godzilla Vs. Megaguirus. I didn't mention the Godzilla Anime Trilogy cuz I haven't seen those yet and I would much rather judge them with my own experience than going by someone else's.
Haha I'm honestly just surprised I got a comment like this about Godzilla '98. It's been a hot minute since I've watched it, but I just started watching all the Godzilla films recently, so I'll get back to it pretty soon anyways. 🤣

I first found you through the Wall review and you've only gotten better and better over time. You're an absolute madman for going on this entire marathon tho
Can i rate these movies? Despicable Me: good Hop: seen it, pretty good! The Lorax: good Despicable Me 2: even better! Minions: good The Secret Life Of Pets: my sister likes this movie! Sing: my sister also likes this movie! Despicable Me 3: even better! The Grinch: i love this! Both this and the Jim Carrey version! The Secret Life Of Pets 2: let's be honest: My sister likes this movie And Snowball's cover of "Panda" by Desiigner, Kanye West and Uncle Murda killed it!
God the Grinch backstory in their version makes NO SENSE! If he lived in an orphanage RIGHT NEXT to the Who's village, why nobody visited it? Why he was the ONLY KID in the building? I get that being lonely all theses years was sad BUT he didn't hate Christmas because of it, Grinchy wanted friends and food. In short, the Kim Carrey version did it better AND Illumination never understood WHY the Grinch hated this Hollyday.
Here's how I'd personally rank them: 1. Despicable Me 2. Despicable Me 2 3. Sing 4. The Secret Life of Pets 2 5. The Secret Life of Pets 6. The Lorax 7. The Grinch 8. Despicable Me 3 9. Minions 10. Hop
That’s fair! It was kinda hard to rank these movies. None of them were stellar, and I had to think hard about the things I liked about them... and also to remember what actually happened haha
This might not be what anyone was expecting, but I actually kinda enjoyed the Sonic movie! I don’t particularly enjoy the character in the games, I’ve always been more of a Mario guy, but I thought the movie was actually pretty good, all things considered! The only thing I’m hoping for is Nintendo being directly involved with the Mario movie, because this is one of their biggest gaming franchise. But, we’ll have to wait and see cautiously in this regard. (Also with the fact of that other Mario movie from back then, I think they would want to make this the best film it can be for Mario.)
I thought the gag of Gru only being able to steal the small versions of the Eifell Tower and Statue of Liberty was kinda funny.

This video is legit more interesting than an actual illumination movie
Thank you! It's an admittedly low bar, but it still means a lot to me! 😊
It really is.
For me, Lorax is the worst. Followed closely by Sing and Minions.
The only two good movies by Illumination are the first two Dispecable Me
Fair enough! The Lorax actually hurt me. I saw it in theaters, back then, couldn’t figure out why I didn’t like it. As the years went on, the pieces finally came together.
Sing feels too much like a zootopia clone
@@robertlauncher it’ll probably end up The exact same as secret life of pets but with chain chomp’s instead
@@gwenofair628 Nintendo’s making the same mistakes already. Lightmotive offers them some creative control, they choose them. Illumination offers them some creative control, apparently that’s all the criteria they have.
Isn't Nintendo actually involved in the making of the Mario movie in some capacity?
Can't they veto any decisions made my illumination?
Man, The Lorax is such missed potential. If they just focused on the Onceler with his descent towards evil and making the cut song Biggering the basis of the story, it could have been something special. Illumination could have had that memorable Biggering moment that could rival Disney's Hellfire, but their corporate "pride" would have taken a hit. Such a waste indeed.
It's really a shame. There's so much they could've mined from it, and they just went with bottom of the barrel shlock.
Minions are the worst things since the Hindenburg disaster. They are the "Chuck Noris" Memes of Animation.
Haha I’ve never heard them described that way! 🤣
I do genuinely like the first Despicable Me. The sequels get progressively worse.
Lorax is awful. The 70s special is much better, watch that instead
Edit: Oh he did!
I can't wait for the Illumination adaptation of 1 fish 2 fish
Haha I wouldn’t doubt it! I like Russell Brand enough, but even I could admit that he’s a bit of a weirdo! 😆
Lol you deserve some kind of award for managing to make this so entertaining 👍😂
Haha thank you! I’m legitimately dreading the inevitable part 2…
Are we all just going to ignore that at the end of sing that bear enforcer totally murdered Mike and his girlfriend
Wait, in the movie, or in the reality of the film? Haha
@@mattammarofficial yes that actually happened at the end of the movie they didn’t actually show the bear eat them but he was hanging onto the back of their car and smiled maliciously so he didn’t actually eat them but it was heavily implied
@@crazydragonstudios7259 Haha shows how much I remember! 🤣
@@mattammarofficial yeah it was pretty forgettable
I recently saw a trailer for an animated movie called "The Bad Guys" and I swear, I assumed it was another Illumination movie based on the character designs and animation until I saw the Dreamworks name show up.
Great work on this video, Matt btw
Well, you're not TECHNICALLY wrong. Illumination and DreamWorks Animation are now overseen by Chris Meledandri...
And thank you! 😊
I love that I got this in my recommended as soon as *unfavorable* news about the Mario movie came out. I'm gonna stick around!
Haha in a little over a year, I might do a follow up... what will there be? Three Illumination movies by that point? 🤣
The only Illumination movie I watched was The Secret Life of Pets. To say it was a mediocre viewing experience would be an understatement. I immediately picked up on the movie being a Toy Story rip-off.
Haha I was surprised by HOW MUCH of a Toy Story rip off that it was! All three movies repackaged as a new, worse movie? 🤣
I'm now afraid on what can they do on the upcoming Super Mario movie.
As a Nintendo fan I'm pretty frightened on what can they do
I’m gonna keep my fingers crossed that Nintendo is making most of the decisions, and all Illumination is doing is animating it, but who knows? It’s weirdly a much anticipated movie for me, due to morbid curiosity.
Cumberbatch as the Grinch had me really excited. Because I saw him in roles like Smaug and thought, wow this is perfect. Then the full trailer came out and it’s like the filmmakers were actively trying to crap all over their own casting.
Yes, when I think Benedict Cumberbatch as Grinch, I think someone trying their best to imitate a whiny prep girl. Cue Krusty “What the Hell was that?” meme
Edit: Oh wow the video just took the words out of my mouth lol.
Would the Minions serve Hitler? Yeah, I mean that explains Heinrich Himmler.
Seriously, tell me that man doesn't look like a minion.
Haha they have to serve the most evil master, so why not the leader of the master race? And Himmler looks EXACTLY like a Minion, that’s amazing! 🤣
You had me for a sec with David Lynch.
Haha I would love to see David Lynch tackle an Illumination movie! 🤣
Imagine the Baby from Eraserhead in the Illumination Art Style 😳
@@connerhinckley5622 I kinda want to see that now... 🤣

Thank you so much! Here's hoping!
I kinda wish you talk about the Lorax cut song, Biggering. And that song slaps, and quite shows the end result of the Lorax.
When I do the eventual follow up, that’s one thing that I have in my notes!
@@mattammarofficial oooh, can't wait to see it :)

*My take on Dr. Seuss feature films*
• How the Grinch Stole Christmas (awfulmovies.miraheze.org/wiki/How_the_Grinch_Stole_Christmas_(2000) I respect that you people actually like this movie, and you all would have very good reasons to, but me, I would always just stick with the original version as a fan of 20th Century Dr. Seuss
• The Cat in the Hat (pretty awful because it’s one the most visually unappealing films with the exception of the underrated vehicle the S.L.O.W., but there are a few more good qualities of this film that while they don’t make the movie a fraction as great as all other The Cat in the Hat works like not only the original , but also The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss besttvshows.miraheze.org/wiki/The_Wubbulous_World_of_Dr._Seuss, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That, both the books and show besttvshows.miraheze.org/wiki/User:SonicClub/sandbox/The_Cat_in_the_Hat_Knows_a_Lot_About_That!, they keep them away from being one of the worst movies up to the ranks of... we’ll get to it later. awfulmovies.miraheze.org/wiki/Dr._Seuss%27_The_Cat_in_the_Hat_(2003))
• Horton Hears a Who (m.ua-cam.com/video/tvQ2u6Scy_U/v-deo.html)
• The Lorax (okay, maybe it would be an overstatement to consider this Illumination adaptation one of the worst films of all time, but even by Illumination standards, I would still consider it to be its weakest film. Of course, with that said, it makes the definitive version of The Lorax look like even more of a masterpiece than ever before! awfulmovies.miraheze.org/wiki/The_Lorax )
• The Grinch (It’s the most surprisingly tolerable Illumination film, but of course, it’s not all that good. It’s a mixed bag. awfulmovies.miraheze.org/wiki/The_Grinch_%282018%29)
• The Warner Animation Group films (hope they are great)

1:14 I love alliteration. 😀
7:24 To this day, it annoys me that Megamind wasn't the success that Despicable Me was.
19:02 I was playing *Yakuza: Like A Dragon* last night, and it had a similar plot point. [Spoilers, skip over this part if you don't want to know]
Bleach Japan (a group that claims they want to rid Japan of all grey zones) supposedly got more members not because they wanted to actually help their country, but because of a popular politician had a rivalry with another politician that wasn't under his control, and people were paid to join.
Specific, sorry.
The Dead Meat skit was spot on!
Haha thank you! 😊
Haha I’m glad something gave you a chuckle! 😆
I think "aggressively mediocre" is something I still stand by.
Whiling the Mario movie seems hopeless, they finally hired some new blood:
-They hired Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (best known for being behind Teen Titans GO!) are the directors, and this is only their 2nd time doing a movie after Teen Titans GO! To The Movies which from what i heard isn't that bad
-They also hired Matthew Fogel (writer of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part), actually they hired him 2 years ago for co-writer of Minions: The Rise of Gru (which was delayed by a year a second time now); otherwise he's the only writer of the Mario movie
-They even have Dick Figures co-creator Ed Skudder as the head of the story
-And possibly the least important one but Miyamoto himself is co-producer as well
Probably still not convincing enough tho
We'll see what happens! I actually think Charlie Day as Luigi is inspired casting. But, with Illumination's track record, it's hard to be excited. But I'll withhold judgement until I see it (and probably review it.)
I just can’t wait for their Mario movie with Nintendo.
I’ll try to be cautiously optimistic, I know Miyamoto is heavily involved, so fingers crossed! 🤞
Making a Despicable Me prequel about the minions is the equivalent of making a prequel to Spider-Man all about the symbiote before it landed in Central Park.
I’d rather watch that movie, honestly! 😆

That's all.

Somehow, mediocrity in a film is worse than just outright being a bad movie. It doesn't make sense, but that's just how it is, I think.
Haha makes total sense! I completely agree! 😊

Get ready Sing 2 is coming out on Christmas….
Ugh, I know... if I ever make a follow up to this, I'll probably wait until there's a few more Illumination films. 😆

And you know what, I actually did recognize that reference in Despicable Me 3 after I listened to it again, but I knew the song from VeggieTales x-D
And they're making an animated Super Mario movie...
I’m so worried about that...
I actually liked Despicable Me 1...to be fair I watched the movie before the Minions were everywhere so they weren't too annoying...I really enjoyed the whole "Single dad taking care of kids even if they're adopted" I thought that was pretty wholesome...and the part when Gru had to give them back because he had to like I felt that...and I enjoyed Steve Carell as Gru...it wasn't the best thing ever since the comedy was hit or miss but in my opinion it's my favorite Illumination movie...Despicable Me 2 was meh only because I thought that the purple minions were a bit creative but could've been better...and Despicable Me 3 was really forgettable and didn't have charm...
That's an aspect I also like, so credit where credit is due. Even though, I think most of these movies are bland and forgettable at best, Gru's relationship with his gorls doesn't bother me.
@@mattammarofficial oh yeah definitely...even though I think Despicable Me 1 was good I can agree that the other movies are donkey cheeks at different levels...

1) Man....I forgot how FUCKED UP Hop was.
2) I think the Lorax would have been 10000x better if Audrey was the protagonist. Take out the Zach Efron middleman, have her passion for trees be the thing that sends her out into the wilderness! Then you avoid all the creepiness inherent in their little subplot-HOW FUCKING DARE YOU MAKE ME LOOK AT ONCELER PORN IN THE YEAR 2021 JESUS CHRIST
3) also at 20:11 did you notice that he literally shrinks while dancing? my friend pointed it out and I can't stop noticing now
4) 30:59 Oh you mean a b- a bi- a big lippe- i can't finish this
5) your illumination smile made me crack up, thanks i hate it
6) Nice to see you upload again! I first found you through the Wall review and you've only gotten better and better over time. You're an absolute madman for going on this entire marathon tho
Now that I’ve seen him shrink I can’t unsee it thanks
Holy shit, what?! I hate it! And thanks for posting your thoughts! I love seeing these kinds of comments! 😊
Damn it! My favorite song again ( The Cannibal holocaust theme) and now it's tied to minions and sing!
Shit man, never expected such a good video! You deserve more subs man!
Thank you so much! I'm hoping the algorithm will pick up my work one day, but I'm stoked people are enjoying it! 😊
These movies have no life... Literally
I'm debating revisiting this subject. There's going to be three new ones by Christmas...
51 minutes! it's christmas in january!
I say that now, of course...once more into the breach, lads... o7
o7 to you! Thanks for your excitement! 😊
When Gru Freezes scarlet and Herb. Herb Died Frozen Eyes Popout.
Facts.
Despicable Me one and two are OK.
Edit: notice how I didn't say good. Just kinda average.
That’s kinda how I feel. I stand by Illumination makes films that are mostly aggressively mediocre. 😆
Wonder if anyone caught that Phantom of the Paradise reference at the beginning
So glad someone caught it!
I’m so glad people are catching it! 😄
@@mattammarofficial I'm from Manitoba originally, and that's literally the only place it was successful
@@walrusArmageddon that’s awesome! I only found it a few years ago, and I’ve been a fan ever since!
@@mattammarofficial man, it is the definition of cult classic. My dad has the soundtrack on record, thats how much he likes the thing
Can i rate these movies?
Despicable Me: good
Hop: seen it, pretty good!
The Lorax: good
Despicable Me 2: even better!
Minions: good
The Secret Life Of Pets: my sister likes this movie!
Sing: my sister also likes this movie!
Despicable Me 3: even better!
The Grinch: i love this! Both this and the Jim Carrey version!
The Secret Life Of Pets 2: let's be honest:
My sister likes this movie
And Snowball's cover of "Panda" by Desiigner, Kanye West and Uncle Murda killed it!
Hey, if you enjoy them, you do you!
@@mattammarofficial Thank you!
Underrated, better than the Nolstagia Critic- IGN
Thank you! That means a lot! 😄
you know i've put off watching it's always sunny for a long time but maybe i'll try to watch it. i like long running shows
100% worth it! I'm rewatching it weekly, because of their podcast!

.
oh no its about Illumination studio.... \*pulls out the whiskey*
Haha it was trek I won't soon forget! 😅
also what came out the same year as dispicable me was the much better dreamworkses megamind
Everyone knows Megamind is better Despicable Me.
Megamind is 1000000% better!
I hope that illumination gets defunct soon.
They won't, but we can dream...
great content
Thank you so much! 😄
I had to come back to this video after chris pratt was being announced to voice mario
What a joke. What a bad joke... 😆
Seeing you call Hop better than Despicable Me was some crazy whiplash after the Schaffrillas ranking.
I love Schaffrillas! But I won’t take this Hop slander any longer! It’s only kinda the worst!
It’s very insane how the same company that made The Pink Panther cartoons topped Illumination with their Lorax movie.
It's bizarre that Illumination felt like there needed to be another Grinch movie, when they had nothing interesting to add.
Here's how I'd personally rank them:
1. Despicable Me
2. Despicable Me 2
3. Sing
4. The Secret Life of Pets 2
5. The Secret Life of Pets
6. The Lorax
7. The Grinch
8. Despicable Me 3
9. Minions
10. Hop
That’s fair! It was kinda hard to rank these movies. None of them were stellar, and I had to think hard about the things I liked about them... and also to remember what actually happened haha
For that Chris chan reference
You got a new subscriber my man
Thank you so much! I forgot I made one here AND in the Tony Hawk video before I made a dedicated video about Chris. It was destiny! 😄
Also I love the editing. I hope your channel starts blowing up in popularity sooner
When you mentioned the Sonic Movie, I wonder if you have any thoughts on that movie in particular.
This might not be what anyone was expecting, but I actually kinda enjoyed the Sonic movie! I don’t particularly enjoy the character in the games, I’ve always been more of a Mario guy, but I thought the movie was actually pretty good, all things considered! Also, Jim Carrey looked like he was having a blast, which was a plus!
I actually like the Sonic Movie as well. I’m equally a Sonic fan as I am a Nintendo fan, and this movie was enjoyable. I’m looking forward to the Sonic Movie 2.
@@JmrUltra I’d be down to see another Sonic movie. Kinda more so than the Illumination Mario movie, just because the studio behind it. Also, I want to see more of the Detective Pikachu world.
@@JmrUltra I have a bizarre hot take here... I kinda love the 90’s Mario movie! It’s bad, but goddamn, is it enjoyable!
