Thanks for the great reminders. I took some good notes here on how to improve my hunting prep and routine when it comes time to take a shot. I know filming these videos are so much work, but thank you for providing them. Beautiful, thanks for sharing that! There are some really good films and books on butchering wild game as well. Sadly, this has been my weakest spot as most animals I shoot belong to someone else and most of the time the carcass is processed by professional butchers. I got spicy sausages off a whitetail when I lived in North Dakota (processed by a butcher) and it was THE best sausages to this day. Hope you and yours have similar experiences with the game you bring home, it adds such a dimension to the hunting.

No I believe the wife confiscated those, so now I have nothing to weigh me down... It's really not that bad, nothing is technical and all my passages allow for 3 points of contact (meaning I move only 1 limb at a time) so pretty easy going although time-consuming.

Fantastic video Thomas, I’ve always remembered the basics you taught us in NZ, having the same routine to set up, body position behind the rifle, etc this was a great refresher. Never fall off the Real Estate! Good luck on the up coming hunts (Cleared direct, number one, no speed 😂)
You're still flying? If I recall correctly it was commercial long-haul??? I'm still sitting in front of a screen and will likely do so until retirement. NZ has been great both times. All people attending bring so much to the table and the average skill level is typically much higher than what I see here (of course there are good people here too, but...) Off to hunt chamois next week, but forecast is murder temperatures for me (high 20's) so not sure if I'll get up. All the best for the season!

Thomas one more thing. As a PRS shooter I must say shooting from weird positions using a sand bag is much, much more confortable, especially from rocks. More stable, and more forgiving and even a bit more faster to get decent position. At least as I experienced it.

It's not going to be a feature, that's for sure. But occasionally I get fed-up with requests and that was more of an "artistic middle-finger move" and a kick towards paid influencers who sell anything...

@@infantilepillock1687 understandably so, it is a very scenic region! Does he not worry about the heat? Leaving next week myself and the high temperatures are a big worry to me, I struggle when it passes 15°C in the mountains. Prefer to be 0-10.
@@THLR My friend comes from one of the warmest places in Germany, thanks to climate change, he is now used to temperatures, that are significantly higher than those stated by you. As a North German myself, I struggle both with mountains and high temperatures...

Very nice field positional shooting. Theres nothing like shooting in real world conditions. In states its difficult to find a K95 single shot, ive never come across one. The closest thing Blaser i have is an K93 straight pull but its a bit of an heavy pig. Kahles optics arent very common either. In states its mostly easiest to find Vortex, Leupold, Nightforce.
Thanks! They are quite rare here too, not many are sold. But in recent years they seem to attract a very small following, I believe that is due internet and availability of info. I didn't see one "live" until I was almost 30.

Thanks, glad you liked it. Working on the follow-up episode now. I think it was labelled as "chemical wood putty". I picked it up in a hardware store. I did put a layer of duct tape underneath, so it is not irreversibly bonded directly to the wood.

I do have one question. Have you ever owned a Blaser that was of poor accuracy? Id be disappointed if I purchased a 5-6k rifle that was mediocre in the accuracy category. Thank you Thomas.
I had one bad barrel and I returned it for a refund. Other than that, always stellar and V0 has been very stable (we are talking average V0 spread maybe 10-15 msec over what must be approaching ten barrels over the R93/R8). Sorry, early morning, didn't catch the rattle can reference.

Video you were you were using a paint brush for your target rather than a spray can. Im assuming for clear delineation of your target lines. I was just meaning that it’s great attention to detail. Which makes sense for precision shooting. Thanks for your content Thomas! One day I will buy an R8☺️
@@milo555100 😅 aaaaah "my oars hit the water" now... the paint is mostly a financial decision but also to avoid spray mist hitting the camera lenses. I found that the spraycans clog up long before the can is empty. I had the metal bar made to better show exactly how tall 1 scope click is at that range, and also had 3 nuts welded to the backside so to present a nice sharp edge for the camera and have it be unaffected by bullet splash hitting the target behind. Before the nuts, you could sometimes get the impression the bar was hit allthough is was only the bullet being crushed below/above.
Nice to see how much work you put into your training. As a former Guide in the Bavarian Alps, i can tell, i never met someone with half of your skills. And i know Guys with more than thousand Chamois on their list. My Wife thinking of moving to Schweden, she likes the long Winter. I prefer Norway, like your Hills. But i guess Hunting ist better in Schweden. Time will tell. I just comment for the algorithm.
Thanks for your kind words! Norway probably has more scenery, but access to quality hunting is probably better in the northern parts of Sweden. But, one also needs a job to pay the bills and that can force the decision. I know for sure I am geographically locked to available job sites. I must say I love chamois hunting. I don't have the familiarity like with other game (and never will as I am only able to see them on these trips), but I enjoy the scenery and the physical effort of getting to them. Also find that I quite like being with people who come from other mountain backgrounds, very interesting to see the how & why. I have yet to film these trips as good as I'd like, so all of the practice and gear modification you see here is basically so I can be faster and have more time on the camera. If you can recommend any contacts in scenic places, please do. I have absolutely no interest in the trophy, but I want nice scenery where camera can be more important than the rifle.

Why don't you shoot with your thlr reticle?
The Minox ZP5 weighs almost 2x that of my Kahles. Simply not suitable for a kipplauf. I'd go ffp, 15-18× magnification, 50mm objective and a bdc with at least 6 mrad of travel available

@@henningdahlhaus4516 yes the kahles. Bdc reticle in 2nd focal plane is useless and a potential source of error. Bdc turret is the superior solution there

Yes, it is very useful here in Ukraine, many people also shoot, I personally like to shoot with pneumatics and firearms, but hunting is prohibited because we have a war

Yes and no. My spindrift correction have been very much reduced to never holding straight on target, and it's easier to just offset POI @100m zero disrance 1cm lefr and forget about it. If you want the corrections, I used .1 mrad
@@THLR thanks for your reply. That makes sense why you hold mostly left for wind. One thing that surprised me was you saying not to use a kestrel wind meter for reading wind that’s what most people do here in America Im sure you saw it when you hunted with the people from Gunwerks . I also noticed you had some kind of mirage reading chart where can I get one ? I always found it strange that reading wind at the shooting location would translate in a correct wind call at the target, I always try reading mirage or vegetation movements. Thanks
Thanks for your reply, it was a good reminder that I sometimes fail to see outside my own perspective and answer like a frog in a well. I believe you are doing it right. My basic method is picking something right in front of me (left side if wind from left, right side of wind from right) and compare that to what I see downrange. If both looks the same, I basically monitor "my pick" only. However, if you have no terrain features between yourself and the target AND you are not placed somewhere that will give a false reading (on a ridge, sheltered, exposed, somewhere that "bounces" and turns the wind), you will get a much better result from a Kestrel. But I believe depending on a Kestrel will make you a "weak" shooter.

Not a fan of any Weatherby cartridge simply because supply can be very difficult and the ammunition manufacturers have a lot more knowledge about making precise cartridges than way back then. That being said, I'd love to own a 257 Weatherby for the fun of it! I owned a Ruger no 1 for a short time, chambered in 30-06. They are quite heavy rifles and precision can be so-so. A Norwegian gunsmith had accurizing the Ruger no 1 as a speciality, I believe one of the things he did was speed up the hammer fall and remove potential tension between the scope base and action. And I do love the falling block principle, much more than the kipplauf system I have (except for weight). So my advice would be look for a different rifle if you want a 270 WBY and look for a different caliber if you want a Ruger no1. And perhaps also include the Browning//Winchester model 1885 in your consideration if a singleshot fallingblock is what you want? I would not buy a Ruger no 1 in 270 WBY and have an expectation to shoot with a high degree of accuracy at longer ranges.
@@THLR Thanks for your honest reply , WBY ammo is easy to get here in the states but fairly expensive . I have a NO 1 in 270 Wby and love it , it shoots slightly under 1 inch groups ( 3 shots ) at 100 yds . I load my own ammo so price is not an issue . my favorite load for Elk is a 130 gr Barnes T Shock with 74.5 gr of IMR 7828 and a 215 Federal primer that gives 3450 fps over the chronograph ! For Deer I use a 110 gr Sierra game king with 76.5 gr of Reloader 22 and a Federal 215 primer that gives 3700 fps . Am looking forward to seeing more videos from you ! Yes alive, despite my steadily advancing age. Was on the range today testing loads with the Vit N560 powder and 123gr bullets - with V0 almost 870 msec I'm finding it difficult to motivate myself for other cartridges (allthough I do have a 6,5 PRC barrel on order)

Because of sagebrush everywhere here in the American Southwest, and other xerophytic shrubs/plants less than a meter high, in hunting I seldom have a prone position. Usually, I'm kneeling or sitting.
Do you bring any type of shooting support?
@@THLR UA-cam may wipe these links out, but I use the BOG Shooting Sticks and the Magpul RLS Rifleman Loop Rifle Sling, together in a modified seated position. It is not as super steady as an attached bipod in a prone position, but this bipod shooting sticks doubles as a walking steady-stick, very useful for balance on hillsides. The sling loop easily tightens around my bicep to further steady my aim. Very steady once I get my breathing steady and heart rate down.
@@THLR Most importantly, I can quickly adjust my sticks and my body posture to aim over sagebrush and such short shrubs

@THLR It's a CZ557 in a manners elite hunter stock in 6.5x55. I just got a meopta meostar 2x12x50. With a full mag a sling ready to hunt configuration is 8lbs even on the scale. The old 264win mag. In the same configuration is just shy of 4lbs heavier.
@@jamesmoon6042 beautiful! That's right around the "best" weight in my opinion. When you try to go significantly lower, you usually have to make a compromise somewhere. Congratulations on the Manners too, top quality, with delivery times and exchange rate we can't really get them here unless you REALLY want one.

Yes and no. I use it for birds when I want a slightly more knock-down than with FMJ. Scenar seems to be magic there, collapse the bird properly without the bullet being volatile like Sierra Matchking. I try to use huntingbullets of similar Bc so all my practice directly transfer (winddrift etc). Over the years I have used a lot of the heavier Hornady Amax, Nosler Ballistic Tip and Accubond, Sierra Gameking. These all seems to do the same job. Only recently have I started with copper bullets, and I'm not far enough into that to offer other advice than "they work too"...

Your twerking at the beginning was very upsetting to see. I have no business shooting at long range. I don't have a Blaser rifle, a Khales rifle scope but I do reload Lapua brass. The scenery and photography are extremely beautiful.

which material did you use to shape the pistolgrip?
It was some sort of epoxy putty//filler? I found it prudent to put a strip of duct tape between the putty and the wood so it can be removed with less effort. Picked it up in a hardware shop, was fairly cheap.
