    That was a great hunt Sir, the climbing adds to the adventure. Its why I love hunting in the Adirondack Mountains so much. The pursuit of the game is what hunting is all about ,at least for me.

      Adirondacks... If I don't use Google, I'll say that is one of the largest coherent wilderness areas in Northeastern USA - mountains and broadleaf? Must be very beautiful and similar colours to this film? Yes I agree with you, it is being out, experiencing nature and simply being present that is the most valuable to me. Hunting connects you to nature in a very good way.

    These are my favorite videos on UA-cam. Keep up the good work. Would you mind doing a video on your current pack set up and what you carry in the mountains hunting?

    • @THLR
      @THLR  Рік тому +3

      Thanks Colton! Yes I can do that over the winter, but keep in mind my pack is very specialised: Low volume and high weight, the worst combo 😂. The pack is a Frankenstein hybrid. Base is a Tasmanian Tiger 30L camera pack which has an excellent carry system. For the bipods, I've bolted on two military surplus bottle holders. On the waistband I have two too heavy bottle carriers from Kifaru and a nicer backpack pouch. On the top I bolted on the excellent lid from the otherwise hugely disappointing Kuiu Pro 7800 pack. This year I've added another TT pouch to better carry shelter. This brings the backpack weight (empty) up to 3.3 kgs which is ridiculous 😅 But it gives me a tight carry and speedy access to camera gear, which I really need. (The Kuiu was a major unpacking operation, needed to put it on the calendar to make filming happen...)

    Weidmannsheil!!!
    Must have been a really great experience when they've let you hunt on your own (which is unusual on a hunting trip) - of course recovering the animal on your own was on the flipside, but you'll look at that trophy (when you are old one day) and will always remember how that felt.
    Your K95 shooting on a bad day looks quite the same as my regular K95 shooting at 100m (K95 308win, no suppressor with "old" Bavarian stock shaft style), so there is quite some room for improvement on my side ;-)
    I love that Kipplauf and I'm always impressed how you fine-tuned it to your needs and use it for long-range shooting.

    • @THLR
      @THLR  Рік тому +3

      Greatness en masse! 😅 It is a modern take on the traditional mountain stick you find in the steep alpine regions. It is the old-timer version of the modern trekking poles, but a vastly superior product in terms of safety (you not only balance, but also arrest and secure). My stick is the Austrian Mountrainer brand, collapsible but sadly too long for my case. (Check their videos on UA-cam, Austrians really know how to do mountains). Austrian HEP Carbon has a shooting stick version which I found more comfortable and they also have a takedown "Ibex" version which I suspect will fit in my travel case and should therefore be a better fit for me. A traditional wooden stick does the same job, but difficult to travel with and you need to select a strong piece.

      Not far, 150. Will probably be more geartalk later. I'm not a proper alpinist, but Meindl has a good guide on their website. Short version is you need a boot that fits YOUR foot, supports the ancle and has a sole in B/C or C category. A softer sole will compress more and you will slip a lot more as the edges don't hold/bite properly. A plain C will be stiff for many uses, a B/C can make-or-break but a plain B might be too soft and more for trail hiking.

    Thoughts on the 6.5 PRC vs the 6.5x284 Norma? Which would you choose in a perfect world where they were both equally available and equally priced?

    • @THLR
      @THLR  Рік тому +1

      I have already made that choice and landed on PRC, but I didn't factor in "equally available". Factory ammo was important for that decision. Availability aside, I like the x284 better in the Blaser system as I can use same magazine and bolthead as the x55 (using x55 in a x284 magazine, but not opposite). Modern chamber dimensions and a design accomodating heavier bullets tipped the scale for me. But it is strictly an academic decision, I doubt I will see any difference on target. 7 PRC would have offered more in terms of reach, punch and winddrift with the heavier, high Bc bullets - but not enough at the short/medium ranges to be worth the effort.

    I am now trying 127 RWS and 143 hornady eld-x in a 6.5x47 Lapua Blaser R8. However I am considering to buy a k95 either in 6.5 creedmoor or 6.5x55.

    So, is this self guided? how does it work?
    Are you just after chami when traveling? Or terrain/biome driven? Do you plan other hunting trips/species? No moose or reindeer in Norway (dream hunts of mine)?
    Sorry for the many questions... 😅
    Oh and you don't want to close the cavity because it traps the heat. Wide open is better. You can just rinse it with (drinking quality) water as long as it hasn't dried...

    • @THLR
      @THLR  11 місяців тому

      Yes for me it is self guided. I just go to beautiful or veru different places, and most often that is easiest combined with chamois. Due age, mountain hunting has a priority. So far I have declined moose and reindeer hunting is difficult for me to arrange in terms of tags and time off from work.

I tilfellet raske skudd stopper jeg pusten der nødvendig. I denne filmen er det jo situasjonen som dikterer når skuddet må gå.

    Hi Thomas!
    First of all i love your content, its awesome. I'm from Spain and im going to buy a New scope for hunting and practising long range, i love that kahles but i have a little fear of breaking the dial system with too much use, because its a designed hunting scope, do you think its enough rough to use it for long range? For me long range its 600 meters for example.
    Thanks and sorry for the long text.

    • @THLR
      @THLR  Рік тому +1

      No problem, a long text means there's more chance I'll understand your question correctly. For the task you describe, I would try to avoid a 2nd focal plane and hunting turrets. My Kahles has held up despite my scepticism (Zeiss has had a terrible track record for me and was the reason I switched to military type scopes), but the purpose built scopes for military or PRS use are more comfortable for longrange. Better-to-use turrets (durability aside) and usually no range limitations. However, the drawback of these scopes are that they tend to be heavy. I haven't found the perfect scope for this, so you'll have to take the drawback somewhere (be that focal plane, turrets or weight. I would not compromise the viewing experience or durability)

Every time you put it on, same impact. I live in a place where I don't see the sun for a very long time, very used to navigating in darkness. Great production as always. However, I'm kind of curious why you choose to work with the camera gear which you do. Wouldn't it be more handy, cheaper, not to mention less weight to carry, using an ordinary handheld 4k videocamera like the Sonys / Canon etc? Correct me if Im wrong but is that the Sony 200-600 f/5,6 you have on your camera? Im not to familiar with the videocameras but a x20 optical zoom on a handheld would keep up on the mega zoom on the still camera, wouldn't it? • @Morgan.isaksen
      @Morgan.isaksen Рік тому

      Well, that's interesting. I my mind, I was pretty shure a compact for 15-20 k NOK would do the daylight job with 4k and a larger optical zoom. I haven't done in depth studies on the sensors of these, but I assumed the sensor on todays handhelds would be more than good enough rather than towing around in the mountains with the 200-600 zoom for the A7. Having said that, the overall quality of your production is by far on the highest level when it comes to singel-team hunting videos, but in my opinion that relates to your complete story telling and effort of your postproduction and clipping as well as heavy lenses. All the best for the holidays, Thomas and please...keep up the good work.

A beautiful scene to capture, but when you look at the data in Davinci, there simply isn't any colour recorded. However, when I shot drone scenes for NRK / 113 S1/ S2 I flew both the Inspire and the Mavic 3 in the period of winter when the sun was below the horizon. However, recording in D-Log the guys managed to obtain most of the colors on the skyline.

      It's bordering on ridicilous considering this is day-hunting, the 600mm lens setup it is 7kg/15lbs alone which bumps gear up to 21, water carry included 19 w/o. I see it as an investment for future health; One day I will quit filming and just enjoy the hunt. But not next year. Next year I will bring more gear so I can "terrier-pursue", stay out and not shoot until I have the film I want. This trip was a failure if held up against what footage I'm reaching for.

    • @THLR
      @THLR  Рік тому +2

      I'm calling it underrated because it has been around since 1891 and has lived in the shadow of other cartridges like 30-06, 270, 308, 7mmRM and even 243. In Norway it has always been extremely strong in the market, but only in the recent decade with the cascade of American 6,5mm's has the caliber received deserved media attention and praise. Which is a little funny from a national "told ya" perspective. Low recoil, easy to shoot well which gives good shot placement, excellent knockdown and if it runs it has a noticably better bloodtrail than with 6mm. And in Norway it is uniquely cheap to shoot due the volume of rifle competitions. But choose according to what is locally available to you: The 6,5x55 doesn't do anything a 6,5 Creedmoor, 270 or 7-08 does equally well.

      @@mysterioanonymous3206 I´m a big fan of light recoiling rifles, makes shot placement and quality observation easier. In terms of economy and legal compliance, 6.5mm becomes a natural choice in Norway. A friend who works with Department of Conservation uses a 223 for big reds with no issues (the cullers there historically used 222). Not that I think caliber restrictions should be de-regulated (a good number of them are sensible considerations), but it´s just a different perspective to illustrate there is nothing magical about animals. You need a few cm of penetration to reach the vitals and disrupt circulation sufficiently.

      Close! 6 years. A bit younger than I thought, but no harm done. I only see chamois/gams on these trip, so I will never be as fast or skilled as my Austrian friends. Not having a spotting scope doesn't help either, but there's only so much I can carry. Avoid shooting mature females, shoot sickly animals, take the smallest one or if present go for a proper trophy if the hunt has been good; this is my private "shooting order" top to bottom. Last year I picked the one with mangy fur, but after I shot that one I found one with a cough... Tough luck, no tag for that one.
      I've been here 4 years now and just reviewed my tracks on google earth: I've only touched a fraction of the land, they have a healthy population and very few chamois are taken by humans. Next year I'm bringing more gear so I can simply stay out. On this trip I didn't dare waste more daylight with filming and took the shot at the first opportunity. Next year I will hopefully be more disciplined and shoot with the camera first and if light fails, I'll just spend the night.
