You don't need science. Just read Cornelius Tacitus and his description of 'barritus' war chant of the Germans in the C1st AD, which involved battering weapons against their shields. It was so intimidating and had such a psychological impact on Roman soldiers that the Romans adopted it themselves. Fun fact: During WW2, Canada created a strategy to fight the Nazis during a battle on the French coast, they nicknamed "mouse-holing." Riot Police main job (unless its a few states in the US in the East where the role is to crush protest.) is to maintain control of a protest situation or civil unrest situation to keep the peace and maintain safety to the public and possibly the protestors as they could also be attacked by anti-protestors. If they feel a situation is getting out of hand or a crowd is too large that a opportunist could take advantage and cause problems police can do this to show they are approaching the area and the intimidation might scare some potential trouble makers away. This is literally them being nice and warning whomever might want to cause trouble that they are approaching the area.

They will however if you fit a profile or description of someone committing a crime nearby they might arrest you (bring you in) for questioning. They need a excuse to arrest you. Arresting you on suspicion doesn't work anymore unless its back east in the west to many people knows police needs at least some type of excuse to nail you, and if your a minority, depending on the cop they might treat you differently. Nervous cops however don't arrest you. They tend to shoot you if they have the slightest suspicion you might endanger them. Fun fact: During WW2, Canada created a strategy to fight the Nazis during a battle on the French coast, they nicknamed "mouse-holing." Actually your correct. Despite what media shows the majority of police officers in Canada and the US are not intentionally out to get you or hurt you. Many wishes to do the job to serve and protect. At least in the last couple of decades since the 90s.
Riot Police main job (unless its a few states in the US in the East where the role is to crush protest.) is to maintain control of a protest situation or civil unrest situation to keep the peace and maintain safety to the public and possibly the protestors as they could also be attacked by anti-protestors. If they feel a situation is getting out of hand or a crowd is too large that a opportunist could take advantage and cause problems police can do this to show they are approaching the area and the intimidation might scare some potential trouble makers away. This is literally them being nice and warning whomever might want to cause trouble that they are approaching the area.
