So based on my experience with viewing the movie my opinion on it is this: it's definitely one of Illumination's better films outside of DM and my personal favorite of all the Dr.Seuss stories that's been adapted to the movies. It’s the best version of any Dr.Seuss story being adapted towards the big screen. I think we can all agree everyone was harsh on the announcement of this movie given the history of how bad previous Dr.Seuss have been especially when the live action versions of The Cat in The Hat and the Grinch and the animated Lorax exist. Given their infamy everyone has always been cautious towards these movies and i don't blame them for feeling that way. I'm glad Illumination was the one to do this version of the Grinch since they did try their best to make the character feel like himself. I know that the original didn’t need to explain why he hated Christmas for over 50 years, but I think someone was going to wonder about the origins of the Grinch sooner or later. The animation is fantastic and probably some of the best work I’ve seen them for any film made by Illumination, voice acting is great, and the characters are actually likeable here and are not like Despicable Me templates! Compare that to the characters in the live action version where they are despicable (no pun intended). I still think that like the previous adaptations of previous Seuss movies it does have filler, but I find it enjoyable compared to the others. In the end imo, this film does suffer from issues that plagued the previous Seuss films but it’s not as bad as them. I really enjoyed this movie it’s pretty solid for a Seuss adaptation. My personal score is 7.5/10.
Obviously, even though I thought Illumination's version of The Grinch was decent, wasn't necessarily as good as the original for obvious reasons, and nothing too special, I definitely without question prefer that one over that abysmal unpleasant disgusting nightmare fueled disastrous excuse of a Grinch adaptation that is the Jim Carrey Ron Howard pissbomb. To show how much I despised that interpretation of The Grinch, even as a kid (I was 5 at the time I saw it never the less) when I saw it in theaters back in 2000 I hated it because it took everything that I liked and made the great Dr. Seuss tale fantastic as well as the 30 minute short cartoon and shit all over it, butchered every aspect of it and did everything wrong in the worst possible ways. I don't care what people say about the 2000 version of The Grinch, that is one of the worst movies I've ever seen and a complete disgrace to one of the best Dr. Seuss tales he ever wrote
i don't blame you for thinking that. I used to love that version, but now i look back on it, it's bad... really bad. The characters are so unlikeable minus Cindy and Grinch i don't give a damn about them, CGI is bad, and also the innuendos. Like WTF were they thinking, but honestly it feels like it's a so bad it's good movie right now. So yeah i'll definitely watch the Illumination version over the live action version anyday.
That’s the one thing I never got that you brought up Animat. Can someone explain why we adore the millions and millions adaptations of A Christmas Carol, and The Nutcracker. But when when the Grinch does it, it’s like a sin against the world. I never got why? 🍸
Cause no one has complained about the different versions of a Christmas Carol. Like why was the one made in 2009 by Disney a horror movie in some aspects for kids?
The one by Chuck Jones is the best by far. However, I do like both versions for different reasons. I like the Jim Carrey version mostly because of Carrey’s acting as the Grinch, and the Illumination version because of the Christmas feel and having a more lighthearted tone then the Jim Carrey version.
The Lorax was also a mixed bag. The parts from the book and the end is probably the strongest parts and is worth seeing, that is if you can stand the cliche love arc
@@corntastrophy I agree. The Lorax was just a mixed bag of a movie. It's certainly flawed in some places that could've gone a lot better, but also went alright in the best possible ways as well (especially taken from the book). I've seen worse before, really.

0:12 When I heard they were making it I thought "Yay! They might finally make a good full length movies version". Not that there's a problem with the half hour animated one, but I like a full length feature film.
Out of all the Dr. Suess feature film adaptations, this one is easily the least offensive. I much rather have kids grow up with this version than the pig-shit Jim Carrey movie.
This film was definitely a mixed bag for me. It was better the live action but not as good as the cartoon. Better than the lorax, but still felt equally cookie cutter in how illumination adapted it. The film felt redundant yet somewhat entertaining. It was a bit offputting to have 3 year old cindy lou who use such an expansive vocabulary and skill set, but the grinch was best in this version as he was more solid than the original, yet more realistic in his attitude. Like he was a trolly asshole instead of a straight up cold asshole. I definitely found him more relatable here since i myself am detesting of the winter holiday season. Watching the film was more fun if you riff on it as you watch it; a quip here, a gag there, pinch of puns and a dash of jojo reference. I was surprised that the overzealous xmas fanatic bricklebaum didnt have some kind of a backstory like he used to bully the grinch in the orphanage but then felt guilty about it so he compensated by trying to be extra hard to be jolly and try to get the grinch to accept him as a friend. But what nitpick really irritated me is pharrell williams doing the narration. I dont know why but i just didnt like his voice doing the narration. But i definitely hated the remix of the grinch song. 6/10. Get rid of the remix and replace williams and ill bump it up to 7.1/10
They completely missed the mark. You're not supposed to like the Grinch, your not supposed to feel bad for him, and his actions aren't supposed to be justified in anyway. You don't have to like a character for them to be the main character. The Grinch is supposed to be 100 percent wrong and him realizing he's wrong in the watershed moment and changing his ways is what your supposed to like.
Something i realized, is that the small size of Whoville makes sense when the Grinch tries to steal christmas. The live action and the Illumination adaptations have only made Whoville bigger and more populated, which then only gives the Grinch more houses he has to work through in order to steal all of their christmas items in one night. Even with the advanced tech he was portrayed as using in those movies, it would still take a while to steal everything.
Although Benedict Cumberbatch does a great job playing the Grinch but I would like it better if Christopher Lloyd voice the Grinch. If he voiced the Grinch, that would've been funny though. Or maybe John Lithgow.
I think that this is the first good Dr Seuss movie in my opinion. I didn't really like the others. I loved this one. But the original Chuck Jones ones will always be my favorites
I'd argue this is the second best dr Seuss movie right behind Horton hears a who. It's not great (especially when comparing it to the original cartoon we all know and love), but is it terrible? Not even close. This is a film I would want to watch every year around Christmas time.
Toonfan That’s a little extreme... I’ll admit: they’re not the best company ever, like they’re not Disney or even DreamWorks in terms of quality, but I wouldn’t exactly call them a bad company either. Let me be real with you: people only hate Illumination because of the Minions, one of the main reasons people hate them is because they’re big. Why else do you think Fortnite and Minecraft get such a bum rap despite being some of the most popular games of all time? I get that that’s not the only reason that they’re hated (like how they’re annoying, which I can agree with), but yeah. At least they aren’t Sony Pictures or something, and while I don’t trust them with the Mario movie, and they oversaturate the Minions, they’re not the worst company ever.

You're a *Strange* one, Mr. Grinch!
Better than the lorax and the live action dr Seuss films
The best part is when the grinch fucks up a kids snowman
The one by Chuck Jones is the best by far.
However, I do like both versions for different reasons.
I like the Jim Carrey version mostly because of Carrey’s acting as the Grinch, and the Illumination version because of the Christmas feel and having a more lighthearted tone then the Jim Carrey version.
2:10 Cinema Wins gives you point for honesty. XD
We can always say this: At least it wasn't The Emoji Movie.
Of course everybody knows there’s one default version of The Grinch, The Chuck Jones version.
The animation is made by the French, in Paris, that's why it's very good.
How the FUCK does that make the animation good
Might be the same as the Lorax. Remember that got a 5/10
Domeju the flashbacks...........
The Lorax was also a mixed bag. The parts from the book and the end is probably the strongest parts and is worth seeing, that is if you can stand the cliche love arc
Domeju I knew it would be 6 at best 4 at worst so...
Christopher Wallace When I was first watching it seemed like it would be a 7
@@corntastrophy I agree. The Lorax was just a mixed bag of a movie. It's certainly flawed in some places that could've gone a lot better, but also went alright in the best possible ways as well (especially taken from the book). I've seen worse before, really.
I really like this movie and i saw this with my mom and it's funny and cute.
Does animat still like illimation? He seems to have given most of there movies pretty good reviews, but at the same time he recently said that illmanation is one of the reasons no one takes animation seriously.
Agree animation is for people with a taste of art, not ADHD children with low attention span
I would say Illumination is not as Bad as Sony
@@GhostYO_ but who could take Illmination films seriously ?
Andrea Frausto to be fair, I rather watch a movie by illimantion then most marvel movies.
@Jake DeBruin
Not a fan of Marvel?
Haven't seen the movie yet, but I really enjoyed the Danny Elfman score.
Marco Ludema Wait, what, really? Danny Elfman? He’s amazing, I just gained a whole lot more respect for this movie...
I just wished that it had a CD release.
The Christmas choir scene was low key terrifying
How the Grinch stole Christmas is my favorite Christmas movie❄❄❄
I mean the live action one. Even though I thought the 2018 was okay.
I like all 5 grinch films(if u count Halloween is grinch night/grinch grinches cat in hat)
I got teary eyed
Although the Grinch Isn't worst then the Lorax as a sellout there's one crime he still committed and that Is responsible for those Smash Bros Leaks and disappointing a few who didn't get there precious Banjo Kazooies, Genos, March Riders, Chorus Kids, and other action figure galore!
~
Join us next time when Oogie Boogie steals the spotlight and jumbles Smash Bros 6 or 7's Roster or the Sanderson Sisters screwing over In the next Marvel Vs. Capcom! XD
MrDrawingboard1 I 💯% agree with you
Imagine a character that moved like that but had Snape's voice
I think the problem with Dr Suess movies is that they HAVE to add filler for the runtime since the stories are so short and simple.
I can’t stand all the NOISE NOISE NOISE from the meta joke grinch ads on UA-cam
6/10. Get rid of the remix and replace williams and ill bump it up to 7.1/10
An ad for the grinch popped up before this-how ironic
Is that Brian Setzer singing in the background around 2:48? It's too quiet and I can't really tell, but I swear it sounds like him.
Although Benedict Cumberbatch does a great job playing the Grinch but I would like it better if Christopher Lloyd voice the Grinch. If he voiced the Grinch, that would've been funny though.
Or maybe John Lithgow.
alexis martinez of Willem dafoe
Of course the original is still the best, but this is WAY better than Jim Carrey's version. I give it a close second to the original.
Cindy Lou Who--I've come to bargain.
I think that this is the first good Dr Seuss movie in my opinion. I didn't really like the others. I loved this one. But the original Chuck Jones ones will always be my favorites
Just saying it ,this is the studio handed the MArio movie.
kurisu7885 We’ll see the result in 2022.
surprised this movie isn't well received, its the most adorable the grinch ever looked,
0:22 well to prove that universal realize that animation is more powerful than live action.
The story: 8.5/10
The Animation: 10/10
The characters: 10/10
Overall: 9.5/10
This is actually my favorite new version of the grinch
*When people enter in to a Dr. Seuss movie, whether it's good or bad...*
There's good Dr. Seuss movies?
Coming up next is Ralph Breaks The Internet
I'd argue this is the second best dr Seuss movie right behind Horton hears a who. It's not great (especially when comparing it to the original cartoon we all know and love), but is it terrible? Not even close. This is a film I would want to watch every year around Christmas time.
Im seeing that grinch movie tomorrow at my mall
This was a pretty good Grinch movie compared to the atrocity that was Ron Howards the grinch.
How The Grinch Pissed Off The Super Smash Bros. Fandom
Phew. I'm glad he didn't give it the Seal of Garbage this time.
Paolo The Childhood Lover that was a very close call!
Every time AniMat says he likes Illumination, I die a little on the inside
Christopher Wallace I know to each his own. I was exaggerating my distain for them. 100% joking
man, if only dr. suess was still alive, he would be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO proud of his books......
I actually liked this movie. It was much better than The Lorax.
Sometimes this movie can be stupid, sad, enjoyable. One of my favorite Dr. Seuss reboot films I even have a plushie of max the dog!🎞
Story: 7/10
Anamation: 8.5/10
Characters: 7/10
Overall score: 8/10
1:10 holy shit is that a real ad? that hurts on a personal level...I LOVE IT
Faizal Ali yes. yes it is
The grinch is possibly the Dr Suess equivalent of Ebenezer Scrooge
Doctor Strange: "Tony. There was no other way."
*disintegrates into ash*
Me: Aaaaaand you're gonna star in a Dr. Seuss movie made by the same studio who created the Minions.
Is it right to say that this was better than the live action adaptation?
By a landslide.
I honestly adored this movie. At least it's not Mike Myer's Cat In The Hat with all of those dirty references!
I’m not going to act like this a good movie, because it’s not, but I would take this over The Lorax any day.
I give this movie a 7/10 I like this movie.
1:08 I could do a Scooby-Doo unmasking meme with that and the person underneath would be the old Wonka template.
Dear Illumination: Chuck Jones's Dr. Seuss adaptations exist. that is all.
39 ½ ft. Pole
Personally I think The Illumination Grinch is way to nice. And that's before he has his change of heart about Christmas
The face he makes at 1:42 looks like he's about to burn a puppy orphanage.
This movie is awesome and the so is the recent version of the Lorax.
Alternate Title for this Review: How The Grinch Got Bashed For Stealing Christmas
Story: 🌲/10
Animation: 🔮/10
Characters: ⭐/10
Total: 🎄/10
When this comes out on blue-ray someone needs to make a 30 minute cut of it, solid animated short film
I enjoy it when I have seen it last year while spending Thanksgiving with my sister and company in Nashville with my parents!
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES EVER! I love it so much I have seen it like over 10 times now...… I might be going crazy.... lol
