How to grow dragon fruit from seed.
This video shows a timeline of dragon fruit seed I planted (from a store-bought fruit) which fruited in 2 years.

Thank you! A video from seed to fruit! Most of the videos are transplants.
Nice to see the growth from seed.
We have a few plants in our garden...but they are not big enough to produce fruit yet
Just wow! I planted some seeds from a fruit I bought at the grocery store, but didn't expect them to sprout because ... no green thumb here. Surprise, they sprouted. Now I'm all stressed out since I don't know what I'm doing. Thank you for sharing your experience. It inspires me to figure this out. 👍
How has it been so far? Congrats on your developing green thumb & dragon fruit babies! 😎
@@LearnWithLilibeth Greetings! I've had ups and downs. Ha! So far, I lost two seedlings. I have 3 left now. One is potted in a cactus mix and finally developed a cactus stem! The other two sprouted in water and developed some roots about .5" long. I transplanted one of them into soil, but it started to shrivel up. 😱 So I put it back into water. It plumped back up. At the moment, I'm at a loss for how to get these two into soil. 🤷
@@ekgheiy they will need quite a bit of TLC when they're tiny sprouts, as they can't take too much heat yet. So give them a spritz of water each day if you're exposing them to full sun - gradually acclimatise them to it if you haven't. From personal experience, they'll need quite a bit of sunlight and rainfall to fatten up good. Once, they're bigger they can thrive on neglect. In terms of fertiliser, I give them some organic fertiliser (worm castings from my worm bin and chicken poop) once a month or so. As for the soil, I use potting soil and spam perlite, before mulching the surface layer to keep the soil moist. Personally, I've been growing Equador Palora dragon fruit from seed for the past 9 months, and they've been doing pretty well in the tropical climate which I live in.
@@user-xs4mu8xm7d - Greetings! Thank you so much for your input. I appreciate you taking the time to share! For one the that has sprouted a cactus stem, I have not put it in the sun yet. It's been under a grow lamp since day one. I'll look into worm castings and chicken poo. I'm hoping retail might have smaller volume than online. The other two dragons (the ones that sprouted in water), they've just been sitting on a counter top with very bright natural lighting (no direct sun). I'm glad you mentioned potting soil and perlite. A custom mix was going to be my next attempt to transplant them into soil. I think even the cactus mix I had was too weighty for the little fella. Wish me luck!
@@ekgheiy how is it now?
Great job, awesome video
Very nice! You done a greate work to do this video. You can also graft the seedlings to get the fruit faster.
Love it straight to the point
Thank you so much. Your efforts are really admirable by me🙏
can u please explain what direction you have them facing towards the sun? with wall behind them? Cant tell if they are in full sun or partial shade. Ur Dragons look fantastic. I just started mine a month ago from seed. They are little lime green sprouts about half the size of a sunflower seed and I'm super excited about this journey
Wow that’s so cool🍀💚 and creative
Awesome.. i just planted my first seeds 9th of june this year and already they are growing fast like weeds 😅
beautiful 👏👏👏👏
what climate do you live in? does it get below freezing in the winter?
Wow amazing 👍🥰
In quale località hai sviluppato la pianta di Dragon Fruit in 2 anni??? Grazie
What soil did you use?
How did you prepare your soil

Hi
i am vishwas from india
can you tell how you make growing media for your small plant in which you tell about. in year2018 in jully how you make this media
what are the ingridents you use to make this media for your small plant ?
please reply
Hello, I just bought regular potting soil from the store. It's just made of peat moss (or coconut coir) with perlite.
I live in Toronto. What type of soil/fertilizer should I use here considering the local cold climate ?
I think the same soil and fertilizer would apply. If growing in containers a loose potting mix would work well (coconut coir, perlite, compost). For fertilizer, I used fish emulsion every 2 to 4 weeks and when the plants were much bigger, I used granular organic 3-4-4 fertilizer every two months or so.
@@sowsomething Thanks a lot!
Thanks sir
What state you from ?
Do I have to tip the top off when it reaches the top of the trellis?
Yes, I waited until the branch grew 10 inches passed the top of the trellis to cut it.
Did you do anything special to get them to fruit in two years? Everything I've been watching says more like 5 years. Just getting into growing them myself, got some seeds ready to go and also going to try regrowing from stem.
Yes, overpot the seedlings they will grow faster. Overpotting is when you place the seedling in a pot that is too large for it. After several months to a year the seedling will fill out the container, then you can transplant them into the ground or elsewhere.
@@sowsomething stop with the BS. It take 5 years no matter what.
@@sowsomething thank you for the info sir. very helpfull
what's your growing zone
Nice. Congratulations. Did you say we have to hand pollinate this variety.??? I bought this one from Home Depot. Thanks for your reply.
Thanks! Yes, I hand pollinated all the flowers.
How big should they be when i seperate and transfere them into single pots?
I waited until the seedlings were about 2 to 3 inches tall
Hi! Nice video! Can I ask what zone you live in? I'm in Canada so it may prove to be more challenging for me. How cold does it get for you in winter?
The coldest days for me in winter are upper 30sF to 40F.
@@sowsomething thanks! Our winters here get a cold as around -4F so I definitely need to bring them indoors lol
Neat, now do it in 2 months
İf i grow it from seeds can i get the same fruit?and how long time it takes for fruit?
It will most likely not be the same fruit if grown from seed, it may taste slightly different
2:22 - what temperature is your definition on "a bit cold"? 😊
I meant temperatures between 40F-50F
@@sowsomething ok nice.. in what temperatur do they prefere?? im in norway so high temp outside isn't our strong suit, hehe
My plants seem to do well between 80F-95F temperatures
The dragonfruit dies under 0 degrees C. It's a tropical plant, like cactus. Around 20 degrees C is optimal.
Plantet en selv for ikke så lenge siden😁👍🏻
Okay mr Plant Appraiser
What growing zone are these (you) in?
USDA zone 9
Do you use any fertilaizer
Yeah, I used fish emulsion every 2 to 4 weeks when the plants were young and when they were transplanted into the ground, I used granular organic 3-4-4 fertilizer every two months or whenever I remembered.
@@sowsomething Thanks
Hey doing good❤️
Mine are staying small uhg! Growing so slow!
I ain't got 2 years. People that are willing to help with adult dragon fruit cuttings are outside my state Az PHX. People in my state want money 💰 or mo money 💵. Oh no My baby seedlings 🌱 .
🌵🌵🌵👏👏
See its possible!! People don't believe me...they just need the right conditions and healthy nutrition.
oh nevermind I see you already answered how cold it gets in your area
Dude we really hardy hear you...
Imagine this video is two years long 😅… I hope not..
That plant did not grow to that size in 4 months. From July 2018 to November 2018... That is impossible....Dragonfruit doesnt grow like that. After 4 months from seed it might get 10 inches tall...smh
Fake lol you switched them to cuttings 2:24
Dude there is a 5month gap between those 2 pictures, he didnt switch them.
