Wonderful song with poignant messages -A vision now and then, of a world where every neighbor is a friend. - oh yes man is a fool….keeps on going anyway. Beautiful poetry from Bjorn and ABBA. Thanks Matt
The section "Who can say what we'll find, What lies waiting down the line In the end of eighty-nine" brings sadness to me because by 1982, the band was broken up. To think what could have been if they had continued making music over the decades and seen how their sound could have changed.
I have been following the count of visits Your ABBA playlist already exceeds 70,000 accumulated views “The Album” leads the stats, and “Voulez Vous” just surpassed “Arrival” (all three albums exceeding 11,000 cumulative views each) In addition, more ABBA songs were added that exceeded 1000 reproductions, In total there are 31 and this is the new order: Ring Ring S.O.S. All record companies know what a perfect Christmas pop song means to the artist and revenue. But this is the only New Year's pop song I know, and it plays all over the world at parties, around midnight that day. Pretty clever.
It has become a real ABBA classic all though it was not released as a single until many years after, and it is still played heavily around New years eve all around the world! The lyrics seem to be quite sad and gloomy, but remember the time it was written in - 1980 - in the cold war period when east and west were threatening each other with nuclear weapons and the Sovjet Union was the big enemy and threat to the west ! That is also a theme on the Visitors - both the title track and Soldiers! And sadly still a theme today! But HNY is still a song of hope - and ABBA always try to blend dispair and hope and love - and so does this! ❤️
You can sense that the tide is turning. Even though they still made a few joyful songs, their overall mood is that of melancholy and reflection. They insisted to the public that their failing marriages wouldn't affect the band, but of course it did.
Hello again, dear friend Thanks for your new reaction to ABBA songs This is an ABBA song classic for all December/January dates A beautiful song with a soft melody at the beginning, a melancholic lyrics with the beautiful and very sweet interpretation of the blonde singer Agnetha, a brilliant chorus with the brunette Frida (especially the power of her second voice in the second and third stanza) and a catchy chorus with the melody that grows and falls in love All ingredients of ABBA The lyrics are so emotional, contrast with an very catchy chorus It's no funny, it's melancolich, but have a message of hope I think that these is one of the songs composed by Björn and Benny in your trip, recorded in February 1980 (long time before the album) It could be a single to the end of the year, but ABBA have a banger: "Super Trouper" "Happy New Year" (1980) is a great song from the "Super Trouper" album, in my Top3 of thr album It has a version in Spanish: "Felicidad" which was a hit here in my country Argentina "Happy new year" have two ABBA official videos, these in English and another in Spanish, and an only TV perfomance in France 1980, and now a new ABBA official lyric video in the end of 2022 Best wishes to you with good music My best regards from Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷 South América Happy new year 2023
This could so easily have been another sentimental schmaltz-fest. Instead it's a distinctly un-sentimental, world-weary meditation on New Year and how we cope with what has happened in the past and find a positive view of the future, wrapped up in a deceptively pretty tune. A party this is not. It's the end of the party - "feeling blue", "ashes of the past", "morning seems so grey". However, life goes on, the future awaits, we have to hope for the best and aim for a better world. I like my Abba with a hint of the dark scandinavian nights.
"Happy New Year" a pop ballad - is the only ABBA song that always charts every year since the late 2000s. It becomes ABBA's #1 song on streaming and digital sales services every December in a lot of countries. (like clockwork) The song became the most popular song in Vietnam after their national anthem (used as a celebratory song for their Lunar New Year). ABBA was one of the few acceptable Western things when Vietnam was mostly closed to the outside world in the 80s (because of its friendly relationship with Sweden and their support and investment in Vietnam). ✌
For me, this is 1 of 4 or 5 songs that I probably wouldn’t care for, if it was sung by anyone else other than Agnetha. Her vocal performance just takes this song to another level. Matt, you said in 'The Winner takes it all' reaction, how she can go from soft and tender, to full Valkyrie in an instant. But she can also go from sad and melancholy to hope and joyful in an instant - it's quite a gift.
Originally there was a plan to write a musical set on New Year’s Eve. This was the first and only track written for that concept. It was quickly dropped as fast as the idea came.
This is being played every year on all radio stations and on TV all over Europe and has probably been a good income for the band. It has also charted repeatedly over the years. No wonder they released a Christmas Single when their recent album was coming out. Covering that festivity as well. 😂
Bjorn is a genius when it comes to writing lyrics. This song is really sad with fear of what's going to happen in the coming year and even in the next decade.
The biggest fault with the lyrics is dating it with 89. Without that this song would be timeless and sung/played anywhere and everywhere every new year. Yes I know it probably is 😂
A very deep & rather dark song... But when the words 'Happy New Year' are said, it's almost as if those 3 words are supposed to 'fix' all the problems. Personally, I never adopted the whole New Years Resolution thing & New Years Eve gets built up to be so much......then New Years Day arrives & it's like the day before never happened lol.
I can't wait for the next song. Finally an Our Last Summer reaction. 😍 Sadly there are only very few reactions to this song, even after it was included in the soundtrack of Thor: Love and Thunder...
I totally agree - "Our Last Summer" should have been a single! It is just faboulous and Frida´s interpretation of it is really perfect - and again; You see the movie for your inner eyes when you hear it! And of top of all that, it has a great guitar solo! ❤Can+t wait for Matt to react to that!!!
"What lies waiting down the line in the end of 89?" Well, the Berlin wall had fallen down by then - having divided my hometown for 28 years and ptevented people from the East like me to see its Western part! And you know what? Having just turned 25 I was amongst the first people to cross the border in that historical night ❤️
Masterful composition, instrumentation, and lyrics. It reminds me that a new year starts at many points in life. Some of them we don't notice, others are stark.
Thanks for the reaction to who I consider to be the most talented pop group ever to grace us with their incredible musical talent. Sadly its version in spanish ( Felicidad ) means Happiness and it’s not used for New year festivities in Latinamerica but in English it’s the only one song for that threshold day
A great song that however should really be listen to/watched together with the official video. Them two together speak lots. So, by the end of '89 the Soviet Union was gone but unfortunately rose in another form "from the ashes of our lives" just recently (or 10 years ago or so). On the Visitors album, that theme will be revisited both in "Soldiers" (fantastic song) and "The Visitors"
Although it has its own beauty, its not a song I go back to ( the next two songs on the album i love). What can't be faulted is the vocal. The song itself is a bit plodding for me, but the chorus is spot on. I am not a fan of Christmas or in the rare case new year songs on general albums due to the seasonal nature of the songs.

I really enjoy the line about wondering what will happen in 1989 , which was 10 years in the future to ABBA then , but is now our 34 years past
The song that makes this album their Christmas holiday album, the album released December 1980.
Lovely vocal from Agnetha. Bittersweet lyrics - their trademark sentiment. The next track really should have been a single...

Hi Matt, All of the Albums on Vinyl have the Lyrics on the inner sleeves.
I was going to publish the new statistics of your ABBA playlist,
and when I come here I find another similar comment just a week ago,
I will refer to the end
“Happy New Year”
is the 36th song to pass 1,000 views
That's why now I'm going to highlight those that exceeded 1500 views
which are already 9 songs:
Ring Ring (on another scale, which exceeded 2000 views for a long time)

and the next one would be “Angeleyes”,
to complete the Top 10 of the most viewed on your ABBA playlist
The new album “Super Trouper” has already exceeded 10,000 cumulative views
is in fourth place, behind "Voulez Vous", "The Album" and "Arrival"
and "ABBA" album fifth with more than 10,000 views too
And the last fact, but not least
and it's about how I started
ABBA's Playlist exceeded 80,000 cumulative views
The additional fact is that in little more than a week,
10,000 more visits were accumulated to your ABBA playlist

This track also contains one of Björn’s biggest lyrical regrets as the mention of 1989 dates the song. He’d rather something a bit more timeless.
The song says just '89 and so Bjorn was quite forward looking as he planned this to be a hit in 1989, 2089,3089 etc.
This song was written in 1980. 1989 is the correct year since we're not sure what happens after the 80's decade.
@@The_Jupiter2_Mission But the lyric also mentions it being a decade in ten years time = 1989. Unless one sees those two lines as unrelated.
@@calvinmurty8273 Nowhere in the song does it state the century.
@@francismedina4547 I mean it dates it to when it was sung. It’s not very future proof apart from once in a hundred years.
