Considered one of their best songs ever written and you can see why. Best vocal performance by Agnetha and the lyrics are emotionally charged and then some. The piano is just awesome. What more can you say but enjoy!
How is it that whenever I listen to so many of ABBAs masterpieces, I find myself crying because of the lyrics but at the same time smiling, tapping my feet or dancing around the room because of the music😜
One of their best songs ever, second best album after The Visitors. The winner takes it all was written by both B&B, lyrics by Björn. There is a demo that had him speaking the lyrics in the end, and the song was later translated into french - sung by a french artist with B&B on instruments and Agnetha and Anni-Frid on backing vocals. Bravo a tù gagne
Not just any French artist -- it was superstar Mireille Mathieu, the musical heiress of Edith Piaf. Her version really reveals that this song was Benny trying his hand at the classic French chanson style, and completely successful in that regard, too! Check it out! French title: "Bravo, tu as gagné"
@@rdwulf6289 There's also another outtake from the ST period from the filming of Happy New Year video.Frida and Agnetha started giggling trying not to laugh but film shooting gets interrupted cause both of them got away from the cameraman's view frame after bursting into nervous laughter repeatedly.
Statistics updated at the end of the weekend on the ABBA playlist “The winner takes it all” entered the Top5 and "Chiquitita went to position 8 (both beat out two album opening songs: "Eagle" and "When I kissed the teacher") Another significant fact is that this Top5 does not have songs from "The Album", the ABBA album with the highest average views (1400) which confirms the parity level between all your nine songs the Top10 of your ABBA playlist is now: Ring Ring S.O.S. As good as new Knowing me knowing you The winner takes it all Eagle Thank you for the music Chiquitita When I kissed the teacher Angeleyes And within the Top10 of your musical reactions: #1 Ring Ring #4 S.O.S. #5 As good as new #6 Knowing me knowing you #7 The winner takes it all #8 Eagle #10 Thank you for the music I close by saying that in just 16 days “The winner takes it all” It's at #5 on your ABBA playlist and at #7 of all your musical reactions I see you soon in next videos My best regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina South America
Many news in the updated statistics of the ABBA playlist at the beginning of the weekend “The winner takes it all” also exceeded 2,000 views (that is what I posted here) And three other songs surpassed 1500 views: "Lay all your love on me" “Move on” “The name of the game” the Top20 of your ABBA playlist is now: Ring Ring S.O.S. I'm late to the party with your ABBA reactions and I love your honest approach to them all so far- had to jump to this one to check your thoughts as I think its their finest work. A masterpiece. A lifetime fan here, saw them live in Stafford UK November 12th 1979...when i was a screaming teenager.... forever etched in my memories 😊. Thanks for all you're doing on your channel to show just how amazing they were/are
Cheers, thanks for the comment! And yeah, I was in the dark a long time about the brilliance of ABBA, but I've been learning these last several months!
Together with Dancing Queen, this is the song with the most enduring legacy and Agnetha's most iconic performance. It's the ultimate divorce song. And it's also an example of 'less is more': the underlying melody is so simple, yet so effective.
Whenever a top 10 or 20 is done for ABBA, this song is generally voted as the no.1 - and rightly so! Knowing the situation 'behind the scenes', full credit to Agnetha for being able to sing this so brilliantly.
A masterpiece of a song. A masterclass on how to write and sing a ballad. Agnetha’s vocals are incredible here. Talk about ring in a bell, those high shrill notes cut through your ears and your soul. Certainly one of the great vocals ever imho. Thanks Matt 👍
This is more than a break-up song. It IS that, and of course when it was released people were absolutely convinced that it was about Bjorn and Agnetha's divorce. That in itself raised eyebrows - so the ex-wife is singing words written by the ex-husband that might be about how he imagines she might be feeling or how he is feeling? There is no doubt experience has influenced the lyrics of this song but how much is directly autobiographical is debateable. It's really about a rather cynical view of the world - that life is a game, we are like pawns on a chessboard, the gods above us destroying our lives on a whim. It's very much about the feeling of powerlessness, that things are out of your control - this person's world has been pulled out from under them, and you feel like that when a relationship breaks up but life itself can make you feel like that too. As a song it's high drama - beautifully constructed, emotionally real, a stunning performance from Agnetha, she is living this song. Benny's wonderful piano flourishes at the end just add to the drama. It's one of their best. I think Super Trouper sees a maturity in their songwriting and subject matter.
"The Winner Takes It All" a pop ballad - is considered by many ABBA's best song. Top 5 song in at least 12 countries - #1 in 5 of those. Hit in the UK (#1), Ireland (#1), Austria (#3), Germany (#4), France (#5), Australia (#7), Spain (#10), and Canada (#10). Reached #1 on US Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and #8 on the Hot 100. Voted Britain's favourite ABBA song in 1999 & 2010. ✌
Incredible, you don't give us a break Matt in three consecutive days Three ABBA dynamites: Gimme gimme gimme super trouper The winner takes it all Yesterday I wrote to you that the video of Gimme gimme gimme was flying in views with 'almost' 600 in just 24 hours today I have to get the word out almost, because "Super Trouper" made 650 views in its first 24 hours Fantastic! are highly anticipated by fans Now I go back to "The winner takes it all" There are divided opinions, several say that the lyrics are about Them and their divorce, others do not, even They themselves have changed their statements about the song over time I prefer something that Agnetha said: that it was deeply moving that Björn wrote it exactly at the time of the divorce decree and that includes her feelings (both of them) but also those of Frida and Benny, and what they were experiencing (that is, it involves all four) and that for Ella it was fantastic to have put her voice, and that after having finished it she realized that they had made a small Masterpiece the song is born from Benny's melody, his inspiration was French songs It is a melody with a constant base, almost without variations, but beautiful Björn took the melody with him and in the company of a bottle of brandy or whiskey he composed it in a couple of hours and He tells that when he wrote "their mind as cold as ice" the bottle was already overturned (later He clarifies that it was the only time he composed in that state; but after a short time Björn made a new partner, with whom he was 40 years) Björn recorded the demo with her voice, it was even thought that he could sing it; However, Björn and Benny chose Agnetha, and it is said that there were tears, but at the same time a deep decision on Agnetha's part to play her. many say that there is even a certain sadism in Björn to write these letters (from a feminine vision of divorce) and give them to his ex-wife actually the decision was made by both partners Björn and Benny (in fact, I am inclined to think that it was Benny who thought that Agnetha was the most appropriate to sing it) If you carefully review the lyrics, it may have parts of their lives, but obviously it is NOT their real life, although logically it DOES include the Real Feelings of Two People who have shared 10 years as a couple This is, in my opinion, a song that is absolutely different from everything that ABBA has done before. because the Lead Voice goes one way, and the choirs (when there are any) go another, as backup, but they don't join, there is no classic ABBA chorus the contrast is absolute between the solitude of the main voice and the background chorus And what about the interpretation of Agnetha, a singer who knows how to convey emotions with her voice and is the best storyteller, said by her own colleagues Agnetha knows how to alternate her dramatic and broken voice on the verge of tears, at times in a desperate whisper, and jump to sheer power in several verses, and return again to the intimate and heartbreaking tone ('but tell me, does she kiss... ') and come out again with sheer force, it is a constant back and forth between fragile and powerful tones, his interpretation is outstanding ABBA performed "The winner takes it all" only twice, in France and in Germany in 1980, in two express shows (in both cases followed by "Super Trouper") the video of the performance in Germany has even more views than the official video, more than 150 million views, because everyone wants to see ABBA interpret it, and especially Agnetha and hers facial and body gestures And just as she is seen in a heartbreaking attitude, if you watch the sequence of the two songs, you will see Agnetha very smiling in "Super Trouper" and even in Germany they make a third song (the next one you will do) and there Agnetha interacts with Björn as if nothing had happened Here I leave the link of the sequence of the two songs so you can see it in your spare time hahaha)
These is the link of France 1980, The winner takes it all & Super Trouper: ua-cam.com/video/1Kd6fRko6Iw/v-deo.html&feature=share9 and now 100 views in these video reaction in only 100 minutes hahaha
July 1 (2023) Latest changes in the updated statistics of the ABBA playlist now we talk about the songs And the main title goes to “The winner takes it all” which successively surpassed “S.O.S.” and "As good as new" and it is already in the second place of your ABBA playlist and of all your musical reactions (just behind the unreachable “Ring Ring”, which has the benefit of starting the playlist) Your ABBA playlist has only three songs with less than 500 views 45 exceed 1000 views 18 of them exceed 1500 views 5 of them exceed 2000 views And 1 of them exceeds 2500 views Now the order of your ABBA Top20 (with its '#' placement in the Top20 of all your music reactions) is: #1 RingRing #2 The winner takes it all #3 As good as new #4 S.O.S. #7 Knowing me knowing you #8 Eagle #9 Thank you for the music #10 Petite #11 Lay all your love on me #13 Angeleyes #14 When I kissed the teacher #16 Gimme gimme gimme (a man after midnight) #18 Move on #19 The name of the game #20 I've been waiting for you #21 Andante Andante #22 Super trouper #23 I'm a marionette #24 My love my life #25 Summer night city And within the Top30 of the total of all your videos on the channel #8 RingRing #14 The winner takes it all #15 As good as new #16 S.O.S. #22 Knowing me knowing you #23 Eagle #24 Thank you for the music #25 Little #26 Lay all your love on me #28 Angeleyes #29 When I kissed the teacher And now for the albums, and their averages The third album, the self-titled ABBA, has already exceeded the average of 1000 views And it is the fifth, in the table that “The Album” leads, (the only one with an average of more than 1500 views) As for the cumulative views per album, it remains the same “Voulez Vous” leads, followed by “Super trouper” and “The Album” And the recent “The Visitors” comes very high, with 1000 views on average for its first five songs. And a complementary fact The singles and bonus track, which I calculate in a separate column As a whole its have also exceeded the 1000 average views We are very little away from reaching 100,000 accumulated views on your ABBA playlist A nice reason to celebrate these almost 6 months of sharing on your channel And so that this effort of yours you see that it has a follow-up and gives you a lot of strength for what you need in your life A big hug from Buenos Aires, Argentina, South America
Lovely summary. Nobody does sadness better than Abba especially when Agnetha sings. I actually think this is ABBA’s summit. They have produced many classic songs but nothing better than this from a songwriting, vocal and arrangement viewpoint. A sign of an amazing song is when I can listen to this for the 100th time and still get emotional.
BTW: "The Winner Takes It All" - today the ABBA "GOLD" compilation album from 1992 is at no. 16 on the UK album chart - and has now spent 1100 WEEKS on that chart!!!! WOW!
Exactly, #16 today and 1100 weeks in Top100 and I add "Gold" has spent the last almost 6 years (more than 300 weeks) consecutive and uninterrupted without falling from that Top100 Gold was the first album to exceed 1,000 weeks in the UK Top 100. Gold (1992) It is the second best selling album in UK history. behind only Queen's Greatest Hits (1981) ABBA's numbers and records in the UK are remarkable and brilliant, even more so when they are Swedish (non-English speaking) triumphing and leading in the homeland of the Beatles, Stones, Bee Gees, Queen and so many local, American, Australian and other groups and artists. english speaking
Whomever doesn't get very sad and even cry when listening to this song has no heart(ache). I suppose most of us have all been there and without the uplifting beat this would have been the saddest song in the world. Reminds me of wise words of a therapist I consulted a few times, she advised me that it's best to let emotions go: if you're sad, cry it out, if you're angry, shout it out. Lucca's cry at the end was clearly an expression of sadness. She clearly prefers lap over chair. But who wouldn't...
Indeed one of ABBA's top 5 songs! All though it is difficult to rank so many good ones! The Winner Takes It All stands out because of both the simple, yet majestic composition, the personel and history-telling lyrics, and Agnetha's fantastic interpretation of it! No wonder this has become a classic! ❤️
Without a shadow of a doubt thos is my all time classic ABBA track. It's a masterpiece. My parents divorced 30 years ago and this song broke me. I actually broke down in tears at the time. Every single word resonates. On the flip side LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON ME from this album is joyous, euphoric.
New statistics numbers to start this weekend, now that you gave me 'a break' after... three smashing videos in a row !!! hahaha And I start with this last ABBA's last three songs were literally devastating on their first day, and also each new one surpassed the previous one "Gimme gimme gimme" started very close to 600, "Super trouper" did it around 650 and " The Winner takes it all” surpassed those 650 in its first 24 hours Obviously there was expectation for three very famous and powerful singles, and the numbers prove it This quickly made it exceed 60,000 cumulative views on your ABBA playlist and the album "Voulez Vous" has also just surpassed 10,000 cumulative views (and is third, after “The Album” and “Arrival”) Now there are 23 songs that have exceeded 1,000 views, with a figure the last two to join were the mega hits “Dancing Queen” and “Chiquitita” but while "Dancing Queen" took more than two months, and close that list, "Chiquitita" did it in less than two weeks, and it keeps going up on the playlist, I think that "Chiquitita" and these last three hits will go up very high on the playlist the new order is: Ring Ring (with the exception that it has many more visits for being the first to appear on your playlist, and if it weren't for this, it probably wouldn't be on this select list) S.O.S. Knowing me knowing you As good as new Eagle Thank you for the music When I kissed the teacher I've been waiting for you Move on The name of the game That's me Angeleyes Money money money I'm a marionette One man one woman Summer night city My love my life Chiquitita Voulez vous Take a chance on me Fernando Hole in your soul Dancing queen Within all your musical reactions this is its location: one on the podium #3 RingRing two more in the Top5: #4 S.O.S. #5 Knowing me knowing you two more in the Top10 #7 As good as new #9 Eagle and another five more in the Top20: #12 Thank you for the music #13 When I kissed the teacher #16 I've been waiting for you #19 Move on #20 The name of the game What more can I say? Fantastic and Congratulations again I wish you a greatest weekend from Buenos Aires , Argentina South America
Great reaction, as usual, but Lucca saying: "Until next time, folks..." 😅😸🤣 Tremendous masterpiece... for many the best ABBA song. (Sometimes, i think so too😊) Take care, Matt & Lucca ❤🇨🇱👍
Hi Matt we have the same cat 🐈 . Although I am in England and mine is called Tabitha 😂 The Winner takes it all is a heartbreaking masterpiece and the best love song they ever did. Its the real highlight of the super Trouper album ( amongst many) but again for me there are two songs that don't belong on the Lp ( not gonna be a spoilsport and reveal which ones). Loving the chronological journey as it makes more sense to me.
Oh nice! You have a tortoise-shell cat too? I love to hear that. :) And you're right, "heartbreaking masterpiece" really is the apt phrase. So beautiful, but so heavy at the same time.
and if children are in the mix that s another level of hurt , in MOST cases love can not be switched on and off like a light , there is in the start a period of letting go but still holding on . your head and your heart has a royal battle
Many are the ones who have cried to this. Agneta divorced Bjorn in 1978, and this song is about that breakup. Bjorn wrote the lyrics alone about himself and his feelings in an evening of self pity. But then gave it to Agneta in the studio for the recording. Must have been a strange experience, for both of them.
Here's some fine demo take shining out some 'hidden' backing vocals and you can also hear Bjorn taking the lead at the end while rehearsals or smth.Marvelous and so impactful. ua-cam.com/video/Jl7UwIx6LqU/v-deo.html
I was 11 years old when I first heard "The Winner Takes It All" on the radio. Even though I was too young to understand fully the deeper meaning of the lyrics, I instantly fell in love with the tune, and "Super Trouper" was the first album I ever bought with my own money. Through the coming years, I eventually bought all eight original studio albums that ABBA released (before "Voyage"), and like you, I listened to every song and grew to appreciate all of them--even the so-called "bad" ones. LOL When "Voyage" came out in 2021, forty years after "The Visitors," it was a wonderful moment for ABBA fans. I will be curious to hear your thoughts on both "The Visitors" and "Voyage" because for me, neither of these albums were among my favorites; however, with each subsequent listen, and through more mature ears, both albums have grown on me, and I can appreciate the artistry that went into each of them.
A new comment, short and quick, but for a remarkable fact The three reactions you did to the last big singles from 1979 and 1980 came in with a lot of force, surpassing each other over the weekend But finally today “The winner takes it all” distanced itself and surpassed 1000 views in the middle of the day and did it faster than any other song: in just 3 and a half days And to celebrate it, I am going to leave you a short link of a promotion of the album “Super Trouper” ua-cam.com/video/Zx7BHn-WNdo/v-deo.html Now there are 24 ABBA songs that have exceeded 1,000 views the new order is: Ring Ring S.O.S. Knowing me knowing you As good as new Eagle Thank you for the music When I kissed the teacher I've been waiting for you Move on Angeleyes Chiquitita I'm a marionette The name of the game That's me One man one woman Money money money My love my life Summer night city Voulez vous Take a chance on me Hole in your soul Fernando The winner takes it all Dancing queen Within all your musical reactions this is its location: one on the podium #3 RingRing two more in the Top5: #4 S.O.S. #5 Knowing me knowing you two more in the Top10 #6 As good as new #7 Eagle and there is also a massive addition of eight more songs in the Top20: #11 Thank you for the music #13 When I kissed the teacher #15 I've been waiting for you #16 Move on #17 Angeleyes #18 Chiquitita #19 I'm a marionette #20 The name of the game This completes a remarkable total of 13 ABBA songs in the Top20 of all your musical reactions. Highlighting that the last one to join, "Chiquitita" did it only in 12 days And the final data, which has nothing to do with statistics, but with the ephemeris Today June 5th marks the 57th anniversary of the first meeting between Björn and Benny when in 1966 the groups in which each one was coincided in a tour (a fact that I will return to in a few days later, in some other song on this album) Congratulations again for the great numbers and the fantastic job I wish you a great week kind regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina South America
Oh, thank you so much for sharing that, Eduardo. And they were right to be proud of "The Winner Takes It All." Also they all look impossibly glamorous, it has to be said! And thanks as always for helping me keep track of the interaction from ABBA fans! Be well, talk soon, Eduardo. :)
I love your detailed and mature smart reaction, love your room, love your cat, awww, you didn't stop petting her, (or him), warm cool and calm video, I felt like home watching. I think I wanna marry you! 😛👍🙏❤️
Haha, my kitty is a girl (her name is Lucca), and she is a real sweetie (she turns 1 in a couple weeks). Thanks for watching, and if you weren't aware, I have a huge ABBA-reaction playlist (and playlists for scores of other groups as well). Cheers, thanks for the kind words! ;)
@@mattsnider2667 Awww, she turns one...lucky you. I'm from Europe and have 3 kitties over there but ever since NY rent it's been no pets so far..🥺 I'm gonna check out your other reactions, for sho, I love reactions and I dig your angle. so it's a no on the marriage? "Take a chance on me"?😁❤️
@@monamariadamian7966 Hahaha, love the ABBA (and Erasure) reference. And LOL, if you're ever out California way, who knows, maybe magic would be in the air. ;)
Bjorn and Agnetha has been separated for over a year, but their divorce hadn't finalised, when he presented her with these lyrics. We'll never know how they each felt at that precise moment , but I can imagine Bjorn would have been nervous/worried/scared about Agnethas' reaction. I believe Agnetha has said she cried, and found it quite difficult to perform initially.
Rumour has it ,Agnetha went affected and kinda tearful. Was asked if it was ok and feel comfortable to do this.Of course she did it because as she stated it was a challenge,a role she could play and the song was impactfuly marvelous! She managed perfectly, seemingly effortless, flawless and quite convincingly.
I hope you do 'Elaine' too! Original the B side of the winner takes it all. Completely different upbeat song with great synth lines. I love that one. I think you will like it!
ABBA in the begining two swedish couples, meet inb1969: Agnetha (blonde singer) & Björn (guitarist songwriter) Benny (pianist songwriter) & Anni Frida (brunette singer) Agnetha & Björn married in 1971, with two Young childrens Benny and Frida married in 1978, withouth own childrens both couples separated before the breakup of ABBA in 1982: Agnetha & Björn at end of 1978 Benny & Frida at begin 1981 "The winner takes it all" (1980) is one of the Best Songs by ABBA and the Most sad and emotional too The best lyrics by the guitarist Björn and the greatest performing with the amazing Interpretation of the blonde singer Agnetha Fältskog and her soprano voice The lyrics is a fiction about a divorce, it is not about Their real life, although it is obviously influenced by Their own experiences and the realization of the legal divorce between Agnetha & Björn in the middle of 1980, even though They were no longer a couple or lived together more than a year and half ago, at the end of 1978 In fact, the song was more nearly in time to the split of Benny & Frida as a couple, only a few months later the Official Video with more than 120 millions views in UA-cam, was filmed on July 12 (1980), is a Masterpiece as the song it shows the blonde singer Agnetha alone so sad and remembering happy times, and the others members so nice together, a perfect example of contrast feelings It's the first ABBA vídeo with images in black and white about Their previous history, to introduce us in the context; I think it's their best official video but just as a great performance by Agnetha is seen in these video, almost like a dramatic actress, transmitting the sorrow, anguish and pain, there are also videos in the back room of the filming, which show the four cheerful and funque "The winner takes it all" return ABBA to the Top of the charts, gives ABBA their eighth #1 in UK after almost two years and half Also was the fourth and last Top10 to ABBA in U.S (pick at #8 in 1981) and #1 in US Adult Contemporary too "The winner takes it all" was voted the Best ABBA song by the British fans, and is the favourite ABBA song to the blonde singer Agnetha and now in the new Voyage concerts at London that begins exactly one year before, the encore song is... "The winner takes it all" I wish to You a great weekend my best regards from Buenos Aires , Argentina 🇦🇷 South America
This would be ABBA’s 8th number one in the UK and the first single from the Album Super Trouper. It would be quickly followed by the title track as their final number 1 in the UK. Outstanding masterpiece and many other accolades can be given to this song. For me personally it is one of the best songs ever written and will be played alongside Louis Armstrong's We Have All The Time In The World at my funeral.
Björn once said the final lyrics were written in an hour after downing a bottle of whisky. Which is impressive in itself, but for it to be not in your native tongue either! Wow.
Arguably, people probably consider this their second greatest behind Dancing Queen. A tribute to the song is the melodic line is relatively quite short and merely continually repeats itself in subtly different ways. The vocal, both lyrically and vocally, makes you think it more expansive than it actually is if you break it down.
It just dawned on me how the piano line becomes the vocal line near the end while the vocal line becomes the piano part. And does the song have a chorus? Not in the strict sense. It has what you might call subdued verses and power verses.
Thanks for the reaction........ This is ABBA's Masterpiece..... But It always left me a little confused...... It is always thought of as the ultimate breakup song. But one verse does not play out that way. In my mind anyway. "The game is on again....... A lover or a friend....... A big thing or a small....... the Winner Takes it All".......... If things are over, why is .."the Game on Again"...... Makes no sense. Also .... "A Lover or a Friend".......... Not something a "Court" would decide........ I think the last verse is not directed at the ex partner..... But the new Rival. The verse is talking about not making the subject "feel bad".... And saying the subject "come to shake my hand"..... Again why would an Ex Lover come shake her hand..... I think she decided to "fight back" for the Ex's affections........ And Won....... Great song no matter how it played out......
A woman's thoughts during a divorce hearing: It's not the first time I've experienced a breakup. Actually, I shouldn't make a big deal out of it based on my experience so far. Still, as always, a lover becomes "just" a friend. "You've come to shake my hand" = end of the court hearing, a gesture of mutual respect. The divorce is complete.
@@dirkwolter1725 Still do not agree. "You come to shake my hand, but you see........... The Winner takes it all"...... Does not sound like mutual respect at all. Sound like someone won and some one lost. And the "Game is on again"??? What game? ... "A lover or a friend"...... Not a lover becoming a friend. Like in the future it will be one or the other. Depending who the "winner" is. " A big thing or a small"??? Big or small what??? Friend? Again it is like something is going to happen to make one or the other of these things become reality .... The wording does not make sense if it is just the end of a court proceeding. Again, just my opinion.
@@donny1960 I've always understood it as conflicting feelings. Sometimes you can't let someone go if you still love him or her without a feeling of resentment. The lyrics leave a lot of room for interpretation. Did the judges award custody of their children to the father? Did the divorce only take place at the husband's request? We do not know it. Because the lyrics leave these questions unanswered, more people can identify with them.
@@dirkwolter1725 I identify with the sentence structure. You don"t say a "game" is just starting at the end of something. You do not state two opposing ideas about something that already has been determined..... "A lover OR a Friend" Not a lover TO a friend...... "A big thing OR a small"....... If relationship is completely over. These "one or the other" lyrics would not be needed. Again I do not see a "sign a paper" and it is over thing in these lyrics.... But thank for the discussion.
@@donny1960 "The game is on again" can also be understood as a look into the future. A relationship has ended. What to expect afterwards? The "game" will start again, with a different partner. Will it be love forever this time or will it just end in friendship again?
Ha, so that's what's happening here! ABBA taking you away from a-ha! In the Scandinavian battle, the Swedes are currently smashing the Norwegians! 😅 Now you get me watching some ABBA reactions too, not only because of Lucca but because I also enjoy a bit of ABBA, and the a-ha reactions are few are far between... 😜 (I am quoting an a-ha demo you haven't heard yet.) Second: how is it possible you had never heard this song, Matt? 😳 It isn't possible! I was waiting for you to recognise it at some point and say "Ah, I have heard this before, somewhere...", but you didn't. 🤷♀ Third: I thought this one would make you cry, but apparently you weren't touched to that point. I can't say the same for myself, though. 😭 I thought I would see you shed a tear, and suddenly i started crying! Crazy. 😂 Oh, I have cried so many times in the past listening to and singing this song, I have cried a whole ocean! But I certainly wasn't expecting to cry now. 🤪 That's the power of music, how it brings back even forgotten emotions. Well, her vocals are not only impressive, they are overwhelmingly emotional too. 😢
Ha, but now three Norwegians have weekly spots in my rotation! So maybe the score is closer than you think in the Scandinavian saga. :) And fair to say, I felt the emotion in this one, not in the least because I've been in a similar place after a relationship, but you're right, it didn't push me over the edge, at least not on this listen. Indeed, Mags has made me cry a couple times, and a-ha once or twice as well. So in that respect, I think a-ha are still ahead of the Swedes. ;) (though fair to say, I'm reacting to Roxette too, so it's hard to keep score!)
@@mattsnider2667 I think there must be very few people who never experienced something similar at the end of a relationship, at least once in their lifetime. In my case, I can think of at least two instances. 😜 I guess this song brings back all that pain, at some unconscious level, though I no longer feel it (and am in fact very glad that the winner took it all 😅). Regarding the Scandinavian saga, I hope that in this case the "winner" won't take it all. 😉 ABBA are obviously riding the crest at this point (hint hint), but I'm sure they can share this space peacefully with a-ha. 😁 I don't know Roxette, apart from one or two songs, so I won't include them in this competition. They are not in the same league. 😁 But have they made you cry, too?
Fab song. Not sure I accept that it was Bjorn writing about his split from Agnetha so much as it being a song influenced by it. Big difference. So many people seem to think that all Bjorn did was write lyrics about him and Agnetha. That would be a total bore for the other two. Perhaps Hole In Your Soul sprang from a day when Agnetha got a hole in the sole of her shoe and Bjorn was so affected by it that he had to put pen to paper. We'll never know.
ABBA videos are cheesy. However, this one is a must see why? Because if you think the emotion is present in her voice in the song, it’s even more so on her face in the video and makes it an incredible experience.
Hey, folks! Just a quick note that friends of Lucca should check the final moment of the video. 😸
Looks like Lucca liked the song too!
She's soooo cute! 🤗😍 Now she is gracing ABBA fans with her adorable presence. I'm starting to feel jealous. 😁
Yep, the natural reaction of astonishment that a song can be so beautiful and bittersweet
ABBA = Genius
Considered one of their best songs ever written and you can see why. Best vocal performance by Agnetha and the lyrics are emotionally charged and then some. The piano is just awesome. What more can you say but enjoy!
Benny is the master of piano....nobody comes close....listen to his magical keys on "just a notion "....magnificent...
It seems that Time will never blur this diamond.
How is it that whenever I listen to so many of ABBAs masterpieces, I find myself crying because of the lyrics but at the same time smiling, tapping my feet or dancing around the room because of the music😜
Oh yes, ABBA's upbeat music on many of their songs belie the sadness of the lyrics. Somehow, ABBA makes it work! 😊
You should watch the video. Agnetha looks like in real emotional pain singing it, no acting involved.
She had said she took it as a role play but i'm sure she was both acting and feeling it.
There's an outtake where she's looking sad in the video then sticks her tongue out and laughs at the cameraman. She acting.
@@rdwulf6289 There's also another outtake from the ST period from the filming of Happy New Year video.Frida and Agnetha started giggling trying not to laugh but film shooting gets interrupted cause both of them got away from the cameraman's view frame after bursting into nervous laughter repeatedly.
one of their very best and for me one of the great ballads of all time!

“The winner takes it all” entered the Top5

The jewel in the crown.. ♥️
A masterpiece of a song. A masterclass on how to write and sing a ballad. Agnetha’s vocals are incredible here. Talk about ring in a bell, those high shrill notes cut through your ears and your soul. Certainly one of the great vocals ever imho. Thanks Matt 👍
This is by far their best song in my opinion. Considering all the magnificent classics they've made that says it all. As always a great reaction!
I remember hearing this for the first time in our kitchen on a farm in Alberta and my little gay heart just soared and broke at the same time.
Incredible, you don't give us a break Matt
in three consecutive days Three ABBA dynamites:
Gimme gimme gimme
super trouper
The winner takes it all
Yesterday I wrote to you that the video of Gimme gimme gimme was flying in views with 'almost' 600 in just 24 hours
today I have to get the word out almost, because "Super Trouper" made 650 views in its first 24 hours
Fantastic! are highly anticipated by fans
Now I go back to "The winner takes it all"
There are divided opinions, several say that the lyrics are about Them and their divorce, others do not, even They themselves have changed their statements about the song over time
I prefer something that Agnetha said:
that it was deeply moving that Björn wrote it exactly at the time of the divorce decree
and that includes her feelings (both of them) but also those of Frida and Benny, and what they were experiencing
(that is, it involves all four)
and that for Ella it was fantastic to have put her voice, and that after having finished it she realized that they had made a small Masterpiece
the song is born from Benny's melody, his inspiration was French songs
It is a melody with a constant base, almost without variations, but beautiful
Björn took the melody with him and in the company of a bottle of brandy or whiskey he composed it in a couple of hours
and He tells that when he wrote "their mind as cold as ice" the bottle was already overturned
(later He clarifies that it was the only time he composed in that state;
but after a short time Björn made a new partner, with whom he was 40 years)
Björn recorded the demo with her voice, it was even thought that he could sing it;
However, Björn and Benny chose Agnetha, and it is said that there were tears, but at the same time a deep decision on Agnetha's part to play her.
many say that there is even a certain sadism in Björn to write these letters (from a feminine vision of divorce) and give them to his ex-wife
actually the decision was made by both partners Björn and Benny (in fact, I am inclined to think that it was Benny who thought that Agnetha was the most appropriate to sing it)
If you carefully review the lyrics, it may have parts of their lives, but obviously it is NOT their real life, although logically it DOES include the Real Feelings of Two People who have shared 10 years as a couple
This is, in my opinion, a song that is absolutely different from everything that ABBA has done before.
because the Lead Voice goes one way, and the choirs (when there are any) go another, as backup, but they don't join, there is no classic ABBA chorus
the contrast is absolute between the solitude of the main voice and the background chorus
And what about the interpretation of Agnetha, a singer who knows how to convey emotions with her voice and is the best storyteller, said by her own colleagues
Agnetha knows how to alternate her dramatic and broken voice on the verge of tears, at times in a desperate whisper, and jump to sheer power in several verses, and return again to the intimate and heartbreaking tone ('but tell me, does she kiss... ') and come out again with sheer force, it is a constant back and forth between fragile and powerful tones, his interpretation is outstanding
ABBA performed "The winner takes it all" only twice, in France and in Germany in 1980, in two express shows (in both cases followed by "Super Trouper")
the video of the performance in Germany has even more views than the official video, more than 150 million views, because everyone wants to see ABBA interpret it, and especially Agnetha and hers facial and body gestures
And just as she is seen in a heartbreaking attitude, if you watch the sequence of the two songs, you will see Agnetha very smiling in "Super Trouper"
and even in Germany they make a third song (the next one you will do) and there Agnetha interacts with Björn as if nothing had happened
Here I leave the link of the sequence of the two songs so you can see it in your spare time hahaha)
These is the link of France 1980, The winner takes it all & Super Trouper:

Latest changes in the updated statistics of the ABBA playlist
now we talk about the songs
And the main title goes to “The winner takes it all”
which successively surpassed “S.O.S.” and "As good as new"
and it is already in the second place of your ABBA playlist and of all your musical reactions

And now for the albums, and their averages
The third album, the self-titled ABBA, has already exceeded the average of 1000 views
And it is the fifth, in the table that “The Album” leads, (the only one with an average of more than 1500 views)
As for the cumulative views per album, it remains the same
“Voulez Vous” leads, followed by “Super trouper” and “The Album”
And the recent “The Visitors” comes very high, with 1000 views on average for its first five songs.
And a complementary fact
The singles and bonus track, which I calculate in a separate column
As a whole its have also exceeded the 1000 average views
We are very little away from reaching 100,000 accumulated views on your ABBA playlist
A nice reason to celebrate these almost 6 months of sharing on your channel
And so that this effort of yours you see that it has a follow-up
and gives you a lot of strength for what you need in your life
A big hug from
Buenos Aires, Argentina,

Lovely summary. Nobody does sadness better than Abba especially when Agnetha sings. I actually think this is
ABBA’s summit. They have produced many classic songs but nothing better than this from a songwriting, vocal and arrangement viewpoint. A sign of an amazing song is when I can listen to this for the 100th time and still get emotional.
Putting sales to one side, this is probably their most powerful, dramatic single.
BTW: "The Winner Takes It All" - today the ABBA "GOLD" compilation album from 1992 is at no. 16 on the UK album chart - and has now spent 1100 WEEKS on that chart!!!! WOW!
Exactly, #16 today and 1100 weeks in Top100
and I add
"Gold" has spent the last almost 6 years (more than 300 weeks) consecutive and uninterrupted without falling from that Top100
Gold was the first album to exceed 1,000 weeks in the UK Top 100.
Gold (1992)
It is the second best selling album in UK history.
behind only Queen's Greatest Hits (1981)
ABBA's numbers and records in the UK are remarkable and brilliant, even more so when they are Swedish (non-English speaking) triumphing and leading in the homeland of the Beatles, Stones, Bee Gees, Queen and so many local, American, Australian and other groups and artists. english speaking
Just have to add: ABBA GOLD is now certified 21x platinum and has sold 6.3 million copies in the UK - and more than 30 million worldwide! ❤️
Probably the best ABBA song ever, and my second favourite . I look forward so much to your reactions, Thankyou
Cheers, appreciate that! And it really is a masterpiece. No other way to say it!
Can’t wait till you get to ‘Me and I’ and ‘the Piper’. Those two are my favorites of the Super Trouper album.
This was the first ABBA I ever heard. And what made me fall in love with them
Without a shadow of a doubt thos is my all time classic ABBA track. It's a masterpiece. My parents divorced 30 years ago and this song broke me. I actually broke down in tears at the time. Every single word resonates. On the flip side LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON ME from this album is joyous, euphoric.
New statistics numbers to start this weekend,
now that you gave me 'a break' after... three smashing videos in a row !!! hahaha
And I start with this last ABBA's last three songs were literally devastating on their first day,
and also each new one surpassed the previous one
"Gimme gimme gimme" started very close to 600,
"Super trouper" did it around 650
and " The Winner takes it all” surpassed those 650 in its first 24 hours
Obviously there was expectation for three very famous and powerful singles,
and the numbers prove it
This quickly made it exceed 60,000 cumulative views on your ABBA playlist
and the album "Voulez Vous" has also just surpassed 10,000 cumulative views
(and is third, after “The Album” and “Arrival”)
Now there are 23 songs that have exceeded 1,000 views, with a figure
the last two to join were the mega hits “Dancing Queen” and “Chiquitita”
but while "Dancing Queen" took more than two months, and close that list,
"Chiquitita" did it in less than two weeks, and it keeps going up on the playlist,
I think that "Chiquitita" and these last three hits will go up very high on the playlist
the new order is:
Ring Ring
(with the exception that it has many more visits for being the first to appear on your playlist,
and if it weren't for this, it probably wouldn't be on this select list)

Great reaction, as usual, but Lucca saying: "Until next time, folks..." 😅😸🤣
Tremendous masterpiece... for many the best ABBA song.
(Sometimes, i think so too😊)
Take care, Matt & Lucca

Hi Matt we have the same cat 🐈 . Although I am in England and mine is called Tabitha 😂
The Winner takes it all is a heartbreaking masterpiece and the best love song they ever did.
And you're right, "heartbreaking masterpiece" really is the apt phrase.
Let’s be accurate. They separated in ‘78 and divorced in ‘80.
@@supastah68 No, thats totally redundant information, just to make you feel important.
The final commentary provided by Lucca was a bonus😅
Haha, yup! I forgot to mention that in the description but thanks for the reminder. :)
An absolute banger love your ABBA journey
Cheers, thanks for being part of it! And you're right, this is pop brilliance.
Here's some fine demo take shining out some 'hidden' backing vocals and you can also hear Bjorn taking the lead at the end while rehearsals or smth.Marvelous and so impactful.

Agnetha's heart is in this So much .. her pain ! 💔
So much feeling in her singing on this one! For sure. And thanks for all the comments, I'm still going through them. :)
LOL
When "Voyage" came out in 2021, forty years after "The Visitors," it was a wonderful moment for ABBA fans. I will be curious to hear your thoughts on both "The Visitors" and "Voyage" because for me, neither of these albums were among my favorites; however, with each subsequent listen, and through more mature ears, both albums have grown on me, and I can appreciate the artistry that went into each of them.
A new comment, short and quick, but for a remarkable fact
The three reactions you did to the last big singles from 1979 and 1980 came in with a lot of force,
surpassing each other over the weekend
But finally today
“The winner takes it all” distanced itself
and surpassed 1000 views in the middle of the day
and did it faster than any other song: in just 3 and a half days
And to celebrate it, I am going to leave you a short link of a promotion of the album “Super Trouper”

I think you will like it!

is one of the Best Songs by ABBA
and the Most sad and emotional too
The best lyrics by the guitarist Björn
and the greatest performing with the amazing Interpretation
of
the blonde singer Agnetha Fältskog and her soprano voice
The lyrics is a fiction about a divorce,
it is not about Their real life,
although it is obviously influenced by Their own experiences
and the realization of the legal divorce between Agnetha & Björn in the middle of 1980,
even though They were no longer a couple or lived together more than a year and half ago, at the end of 1978
In fact, the song was more nearly in time to the split of Benny & Frida as a couple, only a few months later
the Official Video with more than 120 millions views in UA-cam,
was filmed on July 12 (1980), is a Masterpiece as the song
it shows the blonde singer Agnetha alone so sad and remembering happy times,
and the others members so nice together, a perfect example of contrast feelings
It's the first ABBA vídeo with images in black and white about Their previous history,
to introduce us in the context; I think it's their best official video
but just as a great performance by Agnetha is seen in these video,
almost like a dramatic actress, transmitting the sorrow, anguish and pain,
there are also videos in the back room of the filming, which show the four cheerful and funque
"The winner takes it all" return ABBA to the Top of the charts,
gives ABBA their eighth #1 in UK after almost two years and half
Also was the fourth and last Top10 to ABBA in U.S (pick at #8 in 1981)
and #1 in US Adult Contemporary too
"The winner takes it all"
was voted the Best ABBA song by the British fans,
and is the favourite ABBA song to the blonde singer Agnetha
and now in the new Voyage concerts at London that begins exactly one year before, the encore song is...
"The winner takes it all"
I wish to You a great weekend

Amazing information as always, Eduardo. Thank you for helping steer this journey! :)
Heres where it peakssssssssssss💔❤💔❤💔❤💔❤💔❤ 💔❤💔
I think my favourite part of this track, like so many others, is Benny's piano
It just dawned on me how the piano line becomes the vocal line near the end while the vocal line becomes the piano part. And does the song have a chorus? Not in the strict sense. It has what you might call subdued verses and power verses.
Hey Matt, you should watch the video for this song, it's so beautiful and yet so sad.
Don't EVER listen this if you ever have split up with someone and they cheated on you or now with someone else . You will Ugly-Cry
I think you liked this Matt.
😜 (I am quoting an a-ha demo you haven't heard yet.)
Second: how is it possible you had never heard this song, Matt? 😳 It isn't possible! I was waiting for you to recognise it at some point and say "Ah, I have heard this before, somewhere...", but you didn't. 🤷♀
Third: I thought this one would make you cry, but apparently you weren't touched to that point.
And fair to say, I felt the emotion in this one, not in the least because I've been in a similar place after a relationship, but you're right, it didn't push me over the edge, at least not on this listen.
I don't know Roxette, apart from one or two songs, so I won't include them in this competition. They are not in the same league. 😁 But have they made you cry, too?
You are in need of an ABBA pic
Because if you think the emotion is present in her voice in the song, it’s even more so on her face in the video and makes it an incredible experience.
no offense but my favorite part of this video is at @11:23 😸

The ultimate break up song!
🏳🌈
I love this song but I can’t listen to it these days…too close to my own heartache.
