Nicely done Jamal A Jamal. Great song. Abba songs are seldom happy - there is almost always an underlying pain and melancholia. Agnetha is about 172cm.
You gotta understand, nothing - NOTHING - makes a Scandinavian happier than a good, old bout of melancholy, especially during those 18-hour nights there this time of year. And coffee, melancholy and coffee.
From a general point of view i'd say you're right about coffee and melancholy and especially here in Sweden we are by nature quite melancholy. If you live up in north of Sweden it's somewhat easier to "hang in there". Yes it's lots of snow and super cold but the snow kinda lights up. Compare that to the West coast where October lasts until March if you're unlucky. Rain and wind day out and day in no wonder we're getting depressed and melancholy!
Well said! Right now, att 12 in the middle of the day, we have enough light outside to see the street and where we are walking, but in two hours it will be quite dark again (Yes, I live in the north of Sweden!). Melancholy is our national anthem this time of year ....
The genius of ABBA’s songs is how the amazing tunes and the way they’re sung always seem to make my heart ache. I found myself staring out of a window after this. Brilliant song.
In film-everything is supposed to mean something and nothing is accidental. Do you think they were “looking” out the window as a former married couple here?
Every time I see that you've done an ABBA song, I can't click it fast enough. They were my first "favorite band" when I was about ten years old in 1978 and I still adore them more than words can express. If you can find a good recording of "The Way Old Friends Do", it is one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful songs ever and really tells an amazing story. I'd have given anything to see them live.
Hi Jamel, the ABBA people didn't give up easily. They even were on their best tour when Agnetha and Bjørn were separated. Their Wembley concerts are classics. They made the Voulez-Vous album. They made the Super Trouper album, which this song is from. Annifrid and Benny was still married here. You know they are Scandinavian. If they had been latin, they had broken up already ;). Instead they released music that also reflected their feeelings and their mood. That's why their music is so good. It has substance. Their last album The Visitors even more so: It has some very moving lyrics and songs as: When All Is Said and Done (my favourite), Slipping Through My Fingers, Like An Angel Passing Through My Room, One of Us. ABBA came to be from friendships and love, and ended with the end of romantic love. Bjørn and Benny never fought, and the girls, even they were very different were very supportive of each other. It's great to see that they are so good friends today, and even recorded at least two new songs in 2017! First recordings as a complete group since 1982. Hopefully released very soon. ABBA had magic, its incredible how many young people they are able to touch 39 years after their last album.
Nice to find someone who really knows ABBA! All that drama people are talking about is mostly in their own heads... They seems to think every gaze or word in every video/song is real and that ABBA were fighting already around SOS. When in truth they are still good friends and simply just broke up as couples and then went on to do other stuff... People should really stop projecting so much on to other people who they know nothing about. Just enjoy the music, listen to the lyrics, they are worth really listening to in ABBA:s case. Instead of listening to gossip. 🎶
Thank you for making the last couple of months bearable. We have been watching your videos almost nightly. I love the positive vibes you put out. Keep doing what your doing.
They made ‘Happy New Year’ absolutely very close to the 1979-1980 New Year’s Eve parties. First both of the couples that formed ABBA divorced- then, they broke the group up around 1982. Cracks in that become critical in relationships can start anytime, but can go on for very ling times.
Hey Jamal! Vancouver Canada here! Happy New Year! my hubby discovered your channel last April. I was thinking of this song this morning and then it appeared on your channel! Holy moly. This is the story. I'm an ABBA devotee and had this album. By the time it was released both couples had broken off their relationships but ABBA is a bigger business than IKEA at this point. The guys were still really in the throws of writing and were developing Chess, their first musical production. Plus there was another album in the works, The Visitors. The Winner Takes it All has been argued as the penultimate, insult to a marriage and divorce song, but, you can't help thinking of the emotional strength these four had to plow through. Strength and Resilience Jamal! your the best!
4:00 That "drama" you are talking about is largely an internet myth, a saga. Sure they got divorced, but that was no big thing in Sweden in the 1970s or 80s. They are still good friends, all four of them. Björn and Agnetha often celebrate christmas and birthdays together (as they have children). No "drama" involved. :D
Also, the guy at the window is not Björn. He had some other business to do that day, iirc. The guy in the white suit is another friend of director (and appartment owner) Lasse Hallström. And again, the lyrics and the settings in the video are not about the abba members personally :D
When it cuts down to the "And you make me talk and you make me feel" bit then opens right up again and the high synth line comes, in it literally sends shivers down my spine.
"The name of the game" from ABBA 1977 reminds me the spirit of BEATLES 1967 (Penny Lane or Fool on the hill) the thrumpets in both groups are amazing for the songs BEATLES in 60s ABBA in 70s the best band and more important music in the history

I love this reaction video. I've actually watched it several times. And I love the song. Tonight, I almost broke down and cried. It triggered me. New Years Day is sometimes a real let down after New Years Eve. How MANY years I have felt like that on New Years Day!
They were so famous in Europe that 50% of the children liked the music and the other 50% were vaccinated by the parents. No one in Germany understood the text that time,, but the music and singing was full of feelings. So it was enough for the germans to love it :)
I think they still are bigger in the UK than in Sweden not to mention Australia! Back in the '70s officially it wasn't ok to be a ABBA fan in Sweden cause they were commercial and not political. Despite that their albums still sold gold or platinum here in Sweden.
I have always loved ABBA. Being Swede and Norwegian, (2nd generation American), My grandmother did what she could to teach my brothers and I about our heritage. To this day, I still cannot come to terms with a lot of it. The melancholy and all. Maybe I'm just too Americanized??? Still, a lot of great music still comes from the region. Love it.PEACE!!!
Happy New Year, Jamal! A fun ABBA song to react to would be “When I Kissed The Teacher”. It’s a deep cut off the same album that had Dancing Queen, and just a fun, fun pop song I think you’d enjoy.
That voice is so pure and the delivery is superb. She was a very beautiful woman and still is. Thanks Jamel and a Happy New Year to you and your family.
It really is a great New Year song. It's about recognizing that bad stuff happened, but picking your self up, dusting yourself off and looking ahead with hope of a new and better beginning. Surely that sums up New Years.
You asked a question about when this came out in relation to “the drama”. This was 1980’ Agnetha and Bjorn had divorced by now-this album has “The Winner Takes It All”-their divorce song-from Super Trouper. They still wanted to work together (Thank G-d)... and a year later Frida (the red-head Mezzo Soprano) and Benny (the cute one) would follow suit.
The video was filmed in Lasse Hallströms (who did most of the ABBA videos throughout their career. Who also got known outside of Sweden with his movie My life as a dog, and has directed several movies in the U.S.) own apartment on November 8 1980.
*** of a world where every neighbor is a friend *** This song was written in 1980 when tensions between the U.S. and the USSR were intense. America was boycotting the 1980 Olympics, Russia was in Afghanistan, and Regan was on the way. Bjorn is speaking more generally about the world - "May we all have our hopes, our will to try. If we don't we might as well lay down and die" In the next album, he is even more direct "Is is true that the beast [of war] is waking" (Soldiers) The melancholy reflects the world, as much as the personal.
Well to boil it down this song is actually very current right now. It's about a harsh and difficult year (or decade) that's come to an end and now it's about to how to tackle the future, can we muster the will to turn things around and make it better again (where every neighbor is a friend) or will we succumb to the hardships, let them break us, so that we lose the will to try (and might lay down and die). The song really says that it's up to us to be strong enough make things better and not be complacent and let our inactions give way to the darkness that's out there, ready to snuff out the flame of the candle that this new year has brought with it.
Happy new year to Jamel/Jamal and all the viewers here! Wishing you all health, peace, happiness and all good things in 2021! "Confetti on the floor" is a good lyric, btw.
They were from Sweden and wrote music with lyrics much better than most of English speaking artists especially now a day artists, if you know what I mean
AB,BA Was huge in the 70s Formed in the 1970s ,They have sold over 385 MILLION LPS Making them 2nd to only the Beatles, In the 70s It was ABBA Led Zeppelin and The Eagles And Queen that were HUGE In the 70s
They only stayed together for one more album after this. They never offically broke up as a group. They actually started on another album, but it wasn't going well, so they took a break. The break kept going on and over time as they drifted apart and the years kept adding up. Having said that, they did get back together a few years ago, and supposedly started working on some new music. They have been teasing the release for probably 2 years now, but the release date keeps getting pushed back.
Rumors that 5 songs are recorded so far. And seems like the reason the two songs are delayed is that the Abbatar project is taking longer than expected. We'll see what the future brings.
@@deesee3622 I think they're focused on the new songs. With the songs after the last release I read that the reason they took a break in the first place was that the songs were not coming together the way they wanted. So I would rather they didn't unless they felt the creative energy to go back and complete it up to their standards now.
@@Mark-zu6oz wow I just goggled abba reunion and I didnt realize they are coming out with new songs, 5 to be exact; I was actually googling to see the mini impromptu reunion they had a few years ago jan 2016 in some little place in Stockholm - the first since 1981 I think; so excited to hear they are actually releasing new music! Thats another song for Jamel - The way old friends do - that was what they sang.
This is one of many of their songs that they also recorded a Spanish language version. It's called "Felicidad," and it too has an official music video. Oh, and Agnetha is 5' 8"
You see the group’s popularity peaked in the 70’s and 80’s. If you listened to the song it said at the end of 89. This was recorded before they had problems.
You must see this song in the content of its time. The cold war was very present in all minds at the time. Perhaps especially in countries like Sweden - close to the Sovjetunion. And in the lyrics there is an important message - May we all have a vision of a world where every neighbour is a friend! Thats a positive message and a hope for a better future!
I don't see other reaction to ABBA songs in your chanel I supouse it was the first Then, congratulations I hope for more reactions to the Sweden group ABBA, the more versatile and most important and best selling band in the 70s, the decade post BEATLES ABBA are master to combine sad lyrics with catchy melodies and amazing armonies vocal (also they have happy songs too like: Waterloo, Dancing Queen, Take a chance on me, etc; all this was #1, so catchy and happiest and dancing) The best example was: "The winner takes it all" It was composed 18 mounths after separation between the guitarist Björn and the blonde singer Agnetha Björn write the lyrics of a broken relation and Agnetha sing it with a powerful voice and feeling And the melodie is so catchy, one of their best songs Brutish people chose this as their favorite ABBA song I hope you react this song I give you a link with a oerfomance in Germany ua-cam.com/video/iyIOl-s7JTU/v-deo.html but if you see the Official Video, you can see a great actuation of Agnetha; and the images shows the pain and sadnes combine with memories and happy times It's in my opinion the best video of ABBA GOD bless you and Happy New Year
Agnetha ( the blonde) and Bjorn had been divorced about a year and a half by the time of this video (separated longer). Bjorn had remarried by then. THey had both commented on how better they worked together after the divorce. They both worked together well when they toured in 79. Bjorn had brought his then new girlfriend with him. This video takes place after Bjorn and Agnetha's divorce, but before Frida (the red head) and Benny's (the bearded piano player) separation and divorce. The song is a comment on how we pick up ourselves in the good and bad times of another year passing and strive to try and keep moving forward in the year to come. As for Agnetha's height, both girls are 5'8". In heels, they looked taller. Thanks for the reaction.
I remember like it was yesterday the day I bought this album. It was on audio cassette format and I loved every song in it. That was in 1980. One of ABBA's best for sure. This particular song I have been listening to every new year's eve and new year's day ever since. Even though it was forty years ago, it still sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it. Relevant then, perhaps even more so today. ABBA seemed to have a kind of clairevoyance about the future when it came to writing lyrics. Take "Soldiers" from their final album 'The Visitors", another example of their unmatched talent for song writing. A song that could have been written today. Listen to it closely.
@@klaptongroovemaster It's often an upbeat and danceable melancholy though :D (I kind of grew up with them, so probably the same generation as you parents.)
@@herrbonk3635 My comment was mostly a joke. I'm remembering songs like "Fernando" now. The Happy Songs are the big smash hits. My favorite will always be "Take a Chance on Me." I remember running in circles in the living room as a toddler to that. I guess that's another reason ABBA makes me feel happy.
Nice reaction, man. Freaking sick sad TUNE. I'm stTUNEd... Sick vocals, sick harmony, sick lyrics, WHAT LIES WAITING DOWN THE LINE IN THE END OF 89 is an epic sentence. Wow, man. Greetings from Brazil, and should I say: what lies waiting down the line in the end of 21???
Happy New Year Jamel! You have brought us such joy this year. If you are looking for some amazing lyrics and a truly unique voice, please check out Ferron singing "Girl On a Road," (loss of innocence) "It Won't Take Long" (PERFECT FOR THIS YEAR) or "Ain't Life a Brook" (saddest & most beautiful breakup song). Nobody has EVER reacted to Ferron and you would be the first. She is a treasure. If you love Joni M and other amazing songwriters, you'll be in for a real treat.
Thank you for this reaction and Merry Cristmas for you! When you see the video and hear the song Agnetha's voice is sublime, clear and beautiful, like an angel and Frida in the second and third back vocals was fantastic As always, excelent Agnetha + Frida Another song for this time: "I have a dream" with roles inverted Frida as lead vocal and Agnetha as back vocal you can check it: ua-cam.com/video/8GxkfRD9nns/v-deo.html GOD bless you and be careful
Happy New Year to my Brother from another Mother!!! My wife and I watch all your videos and put a smile on your face!!!! Here's hoping for a better 2021!!
ABBA were so loved in The UK, that they and Led Zep, jointly held the record for 36 years, with the most consecutive No 1 Albums,8 (even more than The Beatles) until recently surpassed by Eminem.
Fleetwood Mac's drama is on a completely different level where they more or less said straight out what they felt about eachother in the songs. ABBA on the other hand were not so much public drama and all of them remained good friends. Yes they admit that a divorce is a failure but they reached a point where felt they had like grown apart. Besides in the Fleetwood case there were also drugs playing a huge part.
@@danielolson5378 From what I've read, during the recording of Fleetwood Mac's album 'Tusk', which was released in the same year as this, Mick Fleetwood would have a medical emergency in The Village Studios, LA. He announced he was going to snort a line of coke across all of the tracks on the console. Accounts vary as to the number of channels he snorted through before he had to quit in cardiac panic, but in the end he was diagnosed as hypoglycemic.
A very quick way to find out if a reaction has been done is to go to Jamel's home page, click on the magnify glass on the right of the page, type the name of the group looking for and press enter.
1. I had a huge crush on Agnetha (blonde) 2. This band was part of what made 70s music great. All on the same station you can hear this group, Elton John, David Bowie, The Doobie Brothers, The Eagles and Alice Cooper and not miss a beat. This wasn't one of them but you know what I mean.
Oh - I meant to tell you, if you liked the sassy disco beat of Rod Stewart "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy", PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go check out ABBA's "Gimme Gimme Gimme A Man After Midnight" and "Voulez Vous!!" Two impeccable disco bangers AND you'll get to see some fun, happy ABBA faces. Please! 💜
FUN FACT: Previously unseen outtakes of ABBA's "Happy New Year " video appeared on UA-cam December 31, 2020 and was gaining a lot of traction. It was removed within hours.
Jamel, if I might make a suggestion/request. You can react to it on either of your channels. Do ABBA "The Last Video". It's hilarious. The dialog is pretty much their lyrics. They all have cameos. Also, it was the video suggestion that popped up at the end of "Happy New Year."
In order to understand all the inside jokes in The Last Video, you should know the Abba catalogue quite well. Maybe Jamel should wait a little bit longer before reacting "The Last Video".

As a swede this is what music is about. Perfect harmonies, perfect voices, perfect lyrics, perfect musicians, and that melancholy is precious.
One of the things about Abba songs: they're always beautiful and musically upbeat, even when the lyrics are about sad things.
Upbeat perhaps, but often in minor or other melancholic intervals and scales.

The song really says that it's up to us to be strong enough make things better and not be complacent and let our inactions give way to the darkness that's out there, ready to snuff out the flame of the candle that this new year has brought with it.
Wishing you and the family a happy healthy and prosperous 2021! To all here in this fam too.
Very Prosperous New Year to You and Yours '💜💪
Happy new year to Jamel/Jamal and all the viewers here! Wishing you all health, peace, happiness and all good things in 2021! "Confetti on the floor" is a good lyric, btw.
They had harmony! Even if the were on hard times! Happy New Year!😎
This was after Björn and Agnetha divorce. Benny and Frida would divorce a few years later.
A few months later! In fact by the release of Super Trouper, they were pretty much over. Benny had already met Mona.
We'll see what the future brings.
wow never knew they were working on another album after that last one they released.... they should release it :)
@@deesee3622 It's a great song. Can't wait for the new songs.
Happy 2021
Happy New Year Everyone!!!
Happy safe and blessed New Year to you and yours 🤴🕊️🎊🎉💥💗
Very fruitful 2021 to you and the family.
A stunningly beautiful record.
You have to do The Day Before You Came, it's a moody stunning masterpiece.
I don't see other reaction to ABBA songs in your chanel
I supouse it was the first
Then, congratulations
I hope for more reactions to the Sweden group ABBA, the more versatile and most important and best selling band in the 70s, the decade post BEATLES
ABBA are master to combine sad lyrics with catchy melodies and amazing armonies vocal
(also they have happy songs too like: Waterloo, Dancing Queen, Take a chance on me, etc; all this was #1, so catchy and happiest and dancing)
The best example was:
"The winner takes it all"
It was composed 18 mounths after separation between the guitarist Björn and the blonde singer Agnetha
Björn write the lyrics of a broken relation and Agnetha sing it with a powerful voice and feeling
And the melodie is so catchy, one of their best songs
Brutish people chose this as their favorite ABBA song
I hope you react this song
I give you a link with a oerfomance in Germany
ua-cam.com/video/iyIOl-s7JTU/v-deo.html
but if you see the Official Video, you can see a great actuation of Agnetha; and the images shows the pain and sadnes combine with memories and happy times
It's in my opinion the best video of ABBA
GOD bless you
and Happy New Year
It's so long ago when I danced to this & many other ABBA songs. It is so so sad both couples split up, don't know when exactly. I was in my 20's!!
I was _born_ sometime after ABBA broke up. ☝🏻🥲
Agnetha is 5'8" 💜💜💜
They decided to separate on Christmas Eve 1979... Happy New Year was recorded in January1980...
Listen to it closely.
the visitors was the first ever album to be on compact disc
ABBA is usually happy music. I would have thought they could sing "Whipping Post" and it would sound like sunshine.
To me, they usually have the typical melancholy of scandinavian and nordic music.
@@herrbonk3635 They certainly did on this one. I had never heard this one. My mom had 3 of their records when I was a kid.
@@klaptongroovemaster It's often an upbeat and danceable melancholy though :D
(I kind of grew up with them, so probably the same generation as you parents.)
@@herrbonk3635 My mom is 83. I was between 3 and 10 when I listened to those records. At 10, my older brother turned me on to Hard (Classic) Rock.
Thank you for this reaction
and Merry Cristmas for you!
When you see the video and hear the song
Agnetha's voice is sublime, clear and beautiful, like an angel
and Frida in the second and third back vocals was fantastic
As always, excelent
Agnetha + Frida
Another song for this time:
"I have a dream"
with roles inverted
Frida as lead vocal and Agnetha as back vocal
you can check it:

GOD bless you and be careful
Happy New Year to my Brother from another Mother!!! My wife and I watch all your videos and put a smile on your face!!!! Here's hoping for a better 2021!!
Happy New Year, Jamel! Thanks for making our 2020 so much better. Wishing you peace and prosperity for 2021. Stay on the bus, brother! ✌🏼💀🌹☮️
"I thought it was going to be a happy song". The thing is, with ABBA, all their happy songs have dark undertones.
A great example of musical juxtaposition ... upbeat music coupled with pessimistic lyrics. A beautiful ABBA signature
ABBA were so loved in The UK, that they and Led Zep, jointly held the record for 36 years, with the most consecutive No 1 Albums,8 (even more than The Beatles) until recently surpassed by Eminem.
Fleetwood Mac was another band that dealt with relationships within the band. The Rumors album is all about that.
And you're probably sad about No Doubt too....
Dan Fogelberg’s “Same Auld Lang Syne” is another New Years classic with a powerful bittersweet feel
1. I had a huge crush on Agnetha (blonde)
2. This band was part of what made 70s music great. All on the same station you can hear this group, Elton John, David Bowie, The Doobie Brothers,
The Eagles and Alice Cooper and not miss a beat. This wasn't one of them but you know what I mean.
Beautiful!
Please! 💜
Happy New Year Jamal!🎉🎊
Thx for abba song and happy new year to France 🇫🇷, Jamel ! Please abba "hole in your soul"
Had and still have great voices. Hopefully one day will reunite for new albums. Not popular as some but I love there song. The day before you came
LOVE this song!
😂😂😂 you always bring a smile 😀
Here's to you ! Never letting us down !!
The figure looking out the window is a Bjorn "stand-in" hence the reason he does not turn around.
FUN FACT: Previously unseen outtakes of ABBA's "Happy New Year " video appeared on UA-cam December 31, 2020 and was gaining a lot of traction. It was removed within hours.
You can see why ABBA have been offered pots of money to reform & have always turned it down.
They turned down a $1 billion offer in 2000.
New music recorded about a year ago, release date keeps being put back... hopefully it will happen in 2021
Happy New Year, Jamel!
Happy New Year!!! 🍾🥂 All The Best!!! 🙏✌️
They had emotional songs that people could relate too .
@@teromattila72 Makes sense.
Agnetha is 5'8"...as is Frida. Bjorn and Benny are 5'9" and 5'10"
Need to.play.....u2...its a beautiful day....lets ger 2021 wirh energy...damn abba...depressing song....janal you us 2 videos tomorrow to make up for this one
I know I requested this last week but I really think you'd like "Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg, which is a Christmas/New Year's song about regrets and the commitment to moving forward ua-cam.com/video/ik2zEZmEJSA/v-deo.html
One of my favorite DF songs! Would be cool if next year Jamel did a bunch of New Years songs on the eve and include this one.
@@debbieomi New years day isn't too late for this one, I think. There's still some room for reflection. A whole day of songs like this would be cool next year though.
Happy New Year, Jamel! Thanks for helping keep great music alive!
Always hated New Years. Still do. So this song jives with me. 🤣
🤔Jamel :totally agreed.with you,mm...!⚡🤖⚡
Nothing better for New Year's Day than "New Year's Day" from U2!
Never thought I'd see you do this song. Tears.
