The song is from 1979 and in the song they sing about friendship between neighbours and hope for the future. In the lyric they mention "the end of 89". And the end of 89 is when the Berlin wall fell and needless to say, the prophetic lyrics of this song makes it very popular in Eastern Europe for that reason.
Abba was our childhood's soundtrack. As another fan once nicely described for many of us 'Abba was our fairytale" while we were growing up.And i think they still are.
Happy new year🎉 perhaps you don't realize how big abba was in the 7ties and still is ...they had a world wilde audiance a sold millions of records..singles and albums..they were one of the first with music video's and inspired a lot of artitsts who came after them
Yep. in the UK, every new Abba single was an event and an almost guaranteed number one. I still have the 7"s with those orange or yellow 'Epic' label centres.
Apparently those scenes of them singing while spinning around was filmed with them standing inside large empty flower pots on wheels with people off camera turning them around! 😂😂😂
2:42 Fun fact, this guy, Tomas Ledin, is also a wellknown musician in Sweden. He sang Sweden's entry in Eurovision in 1980 and during ABBA:s world tour in 1979-1980 he was in their backup choir. Tomas Ledin is married to the daughter of Stikkan Andersson, ABBA:s manager. Stikkan co-wrote some of ABBA:s hits like "Ring Ring" (1973), "Waterloo" (1974), "Honey, Honey" (1974), "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" (1975), "Mamma Mia" (1975), "S.O.S" (1975), "Dancing Queen" (1976), "Knowing Me, Knowing You" (1977) and "The Name of the Game" (1977) and some even call him "the 5th member of ABBA" so he had great influence. Stikkan Andersson made a lot of money, as a songwriter, manager and record company boss of Polar, so he made an award, Polar Music Prize, that after his death has been awarded to many of the greatest in the music business. It's sometimes nick-named "The Nobel Prize of Music".
Lasse Hallström did all their videos. He is a well known director of movies like, The ciderhouse roules, Chocolate and ABBA the movie..and more. Great reaction.
Grear react again, Chase! This is another Gem of ABBA. A classic 'end of the year' song... They also made an spanish version of this one, called 'Felicidad'. Take care... See ya ✌️. Love ❤️ from Chile 🇨🇱🤗👍
A small detail: the video channel MTV started in 1981. In the 70s, a few artists made promotional films that they sent to TV channels. Agnetha/blonde is afraid of flying and had two small children at the time. Tip: You chose the short official video with the radio version for Gimme, Gimme, but you had fun with the short bass and synth part. You should see the new lyric video with the original video in the background because this contains that sweaty musical middle section. The live version Wembley 1979 is also fantastic. It's great how you do it; just keep it up.
Hello again Thanks for your new reaction to ABBA songs This is an ABBA song classic for all December/January dates A beautiful song with a soft melody at the beginning, a melancholic lyrics with the beautiful and very sweet interpretation of the blonde singer Agnetha, a brilliant chorus with the brunette Frida (especially the power of her second voice in the second and third stanza) and a catchy chorus with the melody that grows and falls in love All ingredients of ABBA The lyrics are so emotional, contrast with an very catchy chorus It's no funny, it's melancolich, but have a message of hope "Happy New Year" (1980) is a great song from the "Super Trouper" album (which includes the homonymous song and "The winner takes it all" among others) It has a version in Spanish: "Felicidad" which was a hit here in my country Argentina "Happy new year" have two ABBA official videos, these in English and another in Spanish, and an only TV perfomance in France 1980, and now a new ABBA official lyric video in the end of 2022 just yesterday (Yes!, you are reading wright) "Happy New Year" was #3 in iTunes worlwide and #1 in iTunes at Sweden in last November 2021, ABBA include a Christmas song tittle "Little things" in their new album "Voyage", that also was released as a single with a special video with childrens ABBA donated your royalties to UNICEF, as ABBA did before in 1979 with "Chiquitita" Best wishes to you with good music My best regards from Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷 South America Happy new year 2024 P.S.: in next April will be the 50 anniversary of ABBA wining Eurovisión with the iconic Waterloo and could be an special homenage for all ABBA it will be great that You react these live perfomance (the video of Eurovisión included 1 minute of introduction to Sweden and young ABBA members, You must see it)
❤❤❤❤ ABBA crazy all these years later saw ABBA live in Melbourne Australia Sidney Myer Music Bowl March 1977 they released new music a few yrs ago I Still Have Faith In You & Don't Shut Me Down & an Album Voyage after 40 yrs ABBA = ABBASOLUTELY SWEDETASTIC
It gives me so much pleasure to see a young fellow like you appreciate the great music of my generation. Keep on keeping great music alive. All the best to you and yours in the New Year (of the Dragon)! Thanks and God Bless!
I once read or heard somewhere that a part of the ABBA "sound" happened because after they had sung the main vocals, they would come back the next day and record the women singing the background vocals. You can hear that at 3:34 ("...he's astray...") when the solo lines stop and you can hear what is obvioulsly the women singing the background vocals.
this is the first video I've seen of yours and let me just say your reaction is f*ckin great. The way that you were just absolutely cheesed the whole time is really what music is about. It's beautiful that somebody like you who may not really listen to this type of music can still find that appreciation in it, and for that I appreciate you. Definitely a new supporter.
In the song she sings about the end of a decade which was the 70's and the dawn of a new one and what lies waiting at the end of the next one 89. Abba had another 2 years of hits into the 80's 1 of which you covered 'The Winner Takes It All' by 82 the band stopped recording as a group and started to persue solo projects. Both girls released solo albums. The boy started a collaboration with musical writer Tim Rice which would lead the creation of 'Chess'. A musical based around the tensions of the cold war played out through the world of the Chess world championships.
Thanks, Chase! 🎉 I love this one. Even though it sounds sad, I think it captures the feeling in which something is ending... and the exhaustion of having to clean up the mess... or find a way to keep going. It's very human, very relatable. ෴ Since you asked, it was released in 1980. ෴ By the way, I thought of you yesterday. MAMMA MIA: HERE WE GO AGAIN (2018) just dropped on Netflix, so I re-watched it. So good!!! But you would enjoy it more if you watched MAMMA MIA (2008) first, of course.
"Happy New Year" is from the later ABBA catalogue, being released in 1980. The band would break up in 1982. You can maybe kind of see the "behind the scenes drama" already happening here. Could you react to "Waterloo" by ABBA? That song has a special place in my heart and is the song that sprung ABBA to fame, being their 1974 Eurovision Song Contest winning entry.
Great to see how much you are loving ABBA. Keep doing the ABBA videos Chase and you’ll bring all us thousands of abba fans along with you 😊 don’t forget Chiquitita for Benny’s top piano performance 😊
ABBA videos were never extravagant and many were made with the same set but with the band members wearing different costumes and hear is an example of that with outtakes from the Super Trouper album launch. Great harmonies as ever but lyrically very relevant now as it was in the 1980’s.
One more comment, so far you made 7 ABBA songs two with the shared leadership of Agnetha & Frida: Mamma Mia (1975) Dancing Queen (1976) four with lead vocals by Agnetha: S.O.S. (1975) Gimme gimme gimme (1979) The Winner Takes It All (1980) Happy New Year (1980) and one with the leading voice of Frida: Money Money Money (1976) ABBA's wealth is the voices of its two female singers Both have different tones and ranges of voices, but Both are essential to ABBA and its sound, and Both have approximately the same number of songs as lead vocals on ABBA That is why I suggest to you now, and I have done it before, that even if some song has more requests, that you now do a Frida series to match: Fernando (1976) Knowing me knowing you (1977) Super Trouper (1980) I still have faith in you (2021) (I'm writing this to you despite being a fan of Agnetha, because I like justice and equity, and you have to listen to both equally) There are also more songs with shared lead vocals: Waterloo (1974) The Name of the Game (1977) Voulez Vous (1979) and although you may not believe it, all these songs that I mentioned to you are world hits They were all Top 10 in the UK several even #1 Therefore, when many of us tell you that ABBA has more than 20 global hits, we are not exaggerating. Even her songs have been adapted for a film saga "Mamma Mia" and are now performed at the Voyage Concerts currently taking place in London UK
BTW 50 years ago in April Abba won Eurovision . Waterloo … I was like u Chase a teenager ! . After Euro they became world known . Rest is for history of their brilliance.
hi Chase i i have watched a lot of your reaction videos for ABBA and i have to say how amazed i am at your reactions ! - I am a little older (well a good few years older than you ,57 but not counting!, )and being someone who was brought up on ABBA whilst livivng on the Euopean mainland in the 70’s and 80’s I find it soooo positively refreshing seeing your reactions and hearing your thoughts on their Work ! -. i guess from the title of your channel “teenage hip hop fan reacts” that there is a lot of music you may not be aware of ( not surprising given your tender age! lol) , but i just wanted to comment on how positive and genuine your reaction s have been , okay ABBA were/are a European Super Group who are absolute masters of their craft , but your genuine reactions have been a joy to watch !. i would encourage you to explore and invesitgate other european Artist that you may not be aware of (i asume youre from the US), and in particular from Europe ! (including the UK).Music (of all genres , styles and culture ) has the power to bring the world closer , and that power is so badly needed right now ! keep Exploring , listening and reacting and i will keep watching your honest reactions ! , thank you Chase for your postings _ keep up your good work buddy ! Love your reaction! But time for you to do some homework: you need to memorize whom is whom and which couples were married to each other, how they became popular, where they are from, and what ABBA Voyage is all about and the meaning of it for us fans. Good luck!
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Suggestion : you should read a BIOGRAPHY ON ABBA! KNOW THEIR HISTORY. KNOW THEIR NAMES. UNDERSTAND THEIR CHART HISTORY OF ALMOST 400 MILLION RECORDS SOLD GLOBALLY. AGNETHA (AG-KNEE-THA) IS THE BLONDE. FRIDA IS THE DARK HAIRED ONE. EASY TO RESEARCH AND GOOGLE EACH SONG, BEFORE YIU RECIRD THESE REACTIINS. JUST A SUGGESTION TO POLISH UP YOUR SHOWS, WHICH I REALLY ENJOY! ;)
A lot of people struggle to remember which is which of Björn and Benny. It's a long time running joke in Sweden that people don't know which one is Björn and which one is Benny, there was even a book, released in 2004, called "Vem är Björn och vem är Benny?" (Who's Björn, and who's Benny?").

This was in 1979 and "in the end of 89" the Berlin wall had come down making my city ONE city again ❤️
ᗅᗺᗷᗅ
Video by Lasse Hallström
He did all of them in the 70s and 80s except for the last two
He also made ᗅᗺᗷᗅ The Movie
Filmed in his apartment
The Name of the Game in Agnethas kitchen
low budget
Abba was our childhood's soundtrack. As another fan once nicely described for many of us 'Abba was our fairytale" while we were growing up.And i think they still are.
Time for a little Super Trouper. 🤔😊
Came to say the same thing!!
Time for some Frida!!
That’s what I was thinking, too!

Yep. in the UK, every new Abba single was an event and an almost guaranteed number one. I still have the 7"s with those orange or yellow 'Epic' label centres.
According to most sources, they usually rank between 2nd and 4th in the list of bestselling groups of all time.
Really enjoy your ABBA reactions. And you’ll have a great community of ABBA fans following your journey and providing you with love and insight.
Apparently those scenes of them singing while spinning around was filmed with them standing inside large empty flower pots on wheels with people off camera turning them around! 😂😂😂
This song came out in 1980.
Just bought the brand new 45rpm vinyl in December. Clear with blue streaks!
Love this song!

Nice to see the younger generation being open to the old classics. Please react to “the way old friends do “ live . My favourite and very moving
This was released in 1980 and featured on the Super Trouper album and photos from the “party” were used as artwork for the album
Hello again Thanks for your new reaction to ABBA songs
This is an ABBA song classic for all December/January dates A beautiful song with a soft melody at the beginning, a melancholic lyrics with the beautiful and very sweet interpretation of the blonde singer Agnetha, a brilliant chorus with the brunette Frida (especially the power of her second voice in the second and third stanza) and a catchy chorus with the melody that grows and falls in love All ingredients of ABBA
The lyrics are so emotional, contrast with an very catchy chorus It's no funny, it's melancolich, but have a message of hope

This song would be great in a Disney movie! I think that everyone in Sweden play this song on New Year…even after all this years.
Lasse Hallström directed most of their videos, and the feature film Abba the movie, set in Australia
One more comment,
so far you made 7 ABBA songs
two with the shared leadership of Agnetha & Frida:
Mamma Mia (1975)
Dancing Queen (1976)
four with lead vocals by Agnetha:
S.O.S. (1975)
Gimme gimme gimme (1979)
The Winner Takes It All (1980)
Happy New Year (1980)
and one with the leading voice of Frida:
Money Money Money (1976)
ABBA's wealth is the voices of its two female singers
Both have different tones and ranges of voices, but Both are essential to ABBA and its sound, and Both have approximately the same number of songs as lead vocals on ABBA
That is why I suggest to you now, and I have done it before, that even if some song has more requests, that you now do a Frida series to match:
Fernando (1976)
Knowing me knowing you (1977)
Super Trouper (1980)
I still have faith in you (2021)
(I'm writing this to you despite being a fan of Agnetha, because I like justice and equity, and you have to listen to both equally)
There are also more songs with shared lead vocals:
Waterloo (1974)
The Name of the Game (1977)
Voulez Vous (1979)
and although you may not believe it, all these songs that I mentioned to you are world hits
They were all Top 10 in the UK
several even #1
Therefore, when many of us tell you that ABBA has more than 20 global hits, we are not exaggerating.
Even her songs have been adapted for a film saga "Mamma Mia"
and are now performed at the Voyage Concerts currently taking place in London UK
THANK YOU !

loving seeing your reaction to ABBA
When this ABBA song came out, I was 17 and a few months in college. Watching this, I am verging upon 62. The emotions hit.
You knew this version was also made in Spanish.
Great stuff but if you want more upbeat Abba then try Take A Chance On Me, or Summer Night City, or Voulez Vous, or Does Your Mother Know...
Give *Take a chance on me* a chance😊, another perfect song.

People love ABBA, and watching you discover ABBA through new eyes is nice to see. You're just scratching the surface of ABBA music.........
The video is filmed in Lasse Hallströms apartment at the time.
Happy New Year Chase !...all the best
Same to you!

It's a bittersweet one, don't you think?
