Yes, "for safety reasons you are not allowed to bring a jack to the yard". Makes sense. Some places will let you use rolling jacks though. Once place I used to frequent had floor jacks with rubber tires. They were always gone though and usually left out in the yard...

I work at a shop where we pull 5-10 transmissions and rebuild them per week. The transfer case on Chevys and smaller dodges that don't have the nut or bolt on the very bottom before I let the crossmember loose. Rest the front shaft end of the T-case on your knees and use that to direct it. Slide the T-case slowly back until the alignment dowel comes out and get a good grip on the main part and slowly lower it onto your legs and then turn it gently and roll it off of you....lot easier to do. I'm not a strong guy and I can take them down and put them back up without much issue...it's about technique. And remember before you ever let go of that transfer case when you are putting it in, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS have 1 bolt minimum holding it in place...
Good day I hope you still get comments from this video. I was wondering what you thought about getting a replacement transmission from a pick a apart. My 98 Grand 5.2L 4X4 trans just lost 1st gear only lots of revving and hardly any movement. I believe its a 44RE. thanks

I had to smuggle my MAPP torch in once, I was grabbing the front factory recovery hooks off a ZJ. The loctite they use on those fasteners is so strong, that unless you warm up the weld nuts from inside the unibody, you will snap the bolts.
I'm not sure but all the u-pull- it's I've been to those old wheels holding up the vehicle are welded to other wheels horizontal and vertical to make it so the vehicle cannot move at all. In my opinion I believe it's a rather safe feature. Thanks for the video.

Almost every junk yard doesn't allow Jacks to be used because people don't know how to use them in the dirt or uneven ground. You wouldn't understand if you question why unless you lift a car off a dead man. Using old rims or any metal in that situation makes sense unless you never been there

Matt you sure got some BALLS of steel brother that is for sure! Awesome job man ;) Btw How much did that salvage yard charge you for that transmission?
You could just unbolt the transmission crossmember and engine mounts (and disconnect all the lines and wires) and use an engine hoist if your yard allows for it, once off the car, then you can remove the transmission from the engine if you dont want it. Those bolts require the proper socket to remove without damage, but you could always drill them out, grind them off, etc.

Hey Matt. Quick question. How much did that transmission cost you? I’m trying to get one for my truck and it’s shows that it’s around 100 plus fees. Is that true? Thank you
i have a 2001 jeep grand Cherokee limited 4.7l v8 4x4 with a 45rfe transmission and was wondering what should I be checking when my jeep wont move anywhere in reverse?
Make sure the transmission has fluid in it. Other than that if it isn't moving its time for a replacement or rebuild. Not cheap at all, which is why so many vehicles are scrapped either the engine fails or the transmission fails, and neither are cheap and usually cost more than the vehicle is worth to have replaced/repaired.
Hello. What is the ~ height (In squatting at knee height, ~ 40cm, ~1,3ft?) and weight of a automatic transmission? I will try it on the street, and jack up only the car front. Do I have to remove the wheels in front before I start? Because I own small ramps (about 21cm, 0.67ft high) to drive on it. What do I have for possibilities without a car workshop with a lift? Without endangering my life :-). It is a 2001 Grand Voyager IV 3.3, 2 tons, 4500 pounds.... Your vehicle is higher, that's a big advantage. Thanks...
Ano Nymos you've obviously never been to a pull and pay, I had to pull this exact trans from this exact vehicle from a pull and pay much worse then that one. There's nothing safe about it, if your not a good mechanic is definently NOT recommend doing this yourself on a trans at a pull and pay, the cars can fall on occasion among other things. Big savings, big risk, big pain in the ass. I've done these this way for years and I'm still scetched out eveytime.
I do not need a pull and pay. It is in front of the house. I want to continue using my transmission. Remove, repair, and insert. Here US cars are rather rare. And a used transmission a risk. It could quickly turn out again. Here on YT, I have found a series of repair videos for the transmission. Here is my jacked car: i.imgur.com/kwpbn0l.jpg Approximately 2.5ft (77cm) between transmission sump and bottom. It seems very stable. The rear wheels are fixed to the ramp with lashing strap (for 8 tons, 8.8 short tons): i.imgur.com/7aJrPsL.jpg I would generally not trust only the parking brake. Are the concrete slabs a problem?
Ano Nymos I understand your concern, I'd change that around a bit if it were me. If you must do it on a sloped drive way (flat surface much safer) than if possible turn it around and back it down on to the ramps then yes straps good idea. The other thing sms biggest concern is you always want your stands as perfectly vertical as possible as your going to be prying and pulling pretty hard at times, it would definently add saftey if it were back down hill on the ramps then at the bottom of the blocks for the stands, it's better to have them shimed at the bottom then flat on an angled drive way. Yes I'd change that, not safe. Hope that helps.
Ano Nymos one more thing to consider, if your a pretty strong guy lower it a little, it's going to take all your strength to lift it up then shimmy it back in place, unless you've got a trans jack but being rather strong myself the trans jack seems almost more trouble then it's worth. They make it very hard to feel the alignment pins and a lot longer to place it in right with a high chance of accidentally crushing lines (just my opinion). It can be done easier lower with a little muscle, I did this grand Cherokee trans with the transfer case attached but yes it took all I had. Being front wheel drive (I'm assuming that's not all wheel drive) yes font wheels/tie rods ect. do need to be removed to slide the axles out of your way. Good luck, be safe.
Melvin Martin Couple of options. You can drop the oil pan and try to un seize the motor- figure out why it's seized a lot of times it's broken rod etc if you can drop the crankshaft etc or you can pull the engine and transmission and get the torque converter bolts from the side but you better have a good wrench that'll grip the fastener for you either way those rod cap bolts are torqued nice and tight too. You can pull the transmission without unbolting the torque converter bolts you just have to give it a real good couple of pulls straight back and then see if you can get to the torque converter bolts while the engine is still in the vehicle.
Im gonna call this video fake, that gravel doesnt have nearly enough old oil stains on it... what kinda fancy pants junkyard is this? Lol, good job! Im pulling the motor in mine and didnt know how much i can drop the trans so i can reach those top bolts... thanks!

Approximately 2.5ft (77cm) between transmission sump and bottom.
It seems very stable. The rear wheels are fixed to the ramp with lashing strap (for 8 tons, 8.8 short tons):

I would generally not trust only the parking brake.
Subbed bro...great vid!!
Another tool necessary to bring in with you -> big ol' pickle fork 3:24
I don't know why but for some reason you remind of "Tim the toolman"
So was that transmission any good?
Dont know... didn't buy it.
What if motor is seized up how do you get it out then.

Couple of options.
You can pull the transmission without unbolting the torque converter bolts you just have to give it a real good couple of pulls straight back and then see if you can get to the torque converter bolts while the engine is still in the vehicle.
love your channel but damn, no rust.. I need to come there!!
How do you lift the transmission into the back of your truck / vehicle?
Once you pull it, the employees can come pick up heavy items
Great job, on the removal and video
Those wheels on their sides are safe too....😂😂😂
Im gonna call this video fake, that gravel doesnt have nearly enough old oil stains on it... what kinda fancy pants junkyard is this? Lol, good job! Im pulling the motor in mine and didnt know how much i can drop the trans so i can reach those top bolts... thanks!
its all green screen!
Big help thanks.....great video!
I've got to replace the flex plate on my 83 bronco. How un-fun of a job is this going to be? :(
