You are a life saver! I could not pull the transmission for the life of me because I didn't know about those freaking hidden bolts holding the transmission plate. Thanks for your help.
Great video! I like that you show the problems you are having or had and how to get around them. Most video people have the nuts or bolts already loose then turn on the camera and say "now I will remove" . Us non mechanics need to see the problems and how to get around them.
Thanks. Showing the problems and my solutions is one of my top objectives. I too have seen the how-to clips where everything works perfectly, but that's not real life.
I REALLY appreciate how you mention which direction is the front of the vehicle to help orient me when watching the video. Great step by step video, much appreciated.
Excellent video!! Your camera work is perfect, you are well spoken, intelligent, and an excellent communicator. Nice work!! A++!! Very helpful video. Thank you very much.
A couple minor points - take care when lowering the trans while it's still bolted to the motor because it is possible to break the motor mounts if the trans drops too far. I would use a strap on the trans to secure it to the jack to avoid sudden movements after you get the trans loose from the engine. Nice job.
If you tighten all the other bolts, loosening the rounded head will be easier. No stress on that bolt adding to the difficulty. Good vids Mike. Do more. 👍
I haven't tried this yet, but I have heard that if you save your clutch solenoid for last, you can gently press the clutch to separate the transmission from the engine.
Good video, I need to do the clutch in my '80 Powerwagon soon. Last time I did it, was in '02. Had a hell of time pulling the trans. Had to disconnect the bell housing from the transmission, and fought to get the bell housing off. Thinking either the fly wheel is to big, or it's the wrong bell housing.
good video. love tj stuff though my tj is getting sold soon to make way for a 4 door. i heard you call it a transmission mount once. ive never heard it called a rear motor mount. i think the skid plate is also referred to as the transmission crossmember. thumbs up keep busting up those knuckles.
You are right, it is a transmission mount. I said "rear motor mount" to help drive home the mental picture of how it works. And on some Jeeps the cross member and skid plate are two separate pieces. In this case, there are one solid piece. EDIT: Also, the factory service manual says "Rear Motor Mount" & "Transmission Mount." Same thing with the Crossmember/Skid Plate.
There is one other use I can think of for the reverse torx socket. The starter bolt on a 2.5l yj. You almost can't fit a regular socket in the area to tighten it down
One of my beater xj projects needs at least a new clutch. It shakes the whole vehicle so bad you can't believe it. We paid $900 total for 2 Renix XJ's. The first one is a couple weeks away from being done. The second one needs a clutch, I think. Can't wait to get them done so we can go prospecting and hitting the trails !! Thanks for all of the tips in this video. I think I'll get a neighbor to help me drop the trans and transfer case !!
Should have tapped that bolt and socket on the ground. Helps bust them apart at times. You did pound it on though. Lol. Just pulled one myself. Put your jack stand at the back of the transfer case. Gets it out of the way.
DO NOT "take the top two out last" 22:10 Well, maybe take them out last, but you MUST loosen them FIRST!!! Otherwise, one will bind. The 16mm gotta go back in to reduce stress on the E12, unless you strip the Torx (trying to get it off)!
I have often used an engine hoist to remove transmissions if I can get access from above. Where would you say the balance point is on the jeep manual trans and transfercase ?
When your removing the ax15 do you need it in neutral because I cant remember if I left it in second or neutral after now removing the shifter and slave cylinder..... I'm having trouble pulling it off the engine it won't budge I have every single bolt removed. Only thing I can figure is that.
Great video! I've watched it a few times over the past month or so while I prepare to replace a clutch and all of the other guts on my TJ. One question is about the exhaust mount on the t-case. Is that a tricky thing to get off? It doesn't look terribly easy to get off of there, so I'm just wondering if there were any tricks or if it did actually just pop out easily? Keep up the great work at Bleepin' Jeep. I love your videos.
hi I am from.Colombia. my english is not really good but hope i can explain my ideas.Your videos are really excellent. my problem is ,the interior of my truck (cherokee xj 95) es really heat. I have watched a couple videos from you about transmission in cherokee xj however, there is a thing that I could not find in my transmission. i do not know what is the reason my truck does not have transmission cooling lines. another thing is, what is the differences between AX5 and AX15.?. I appreciate any help from you. thank you.
Pretty sure that last screw is the torture in 5th layer of hell... I've been trying to take this transmission out for 2 hours and no other video mentions it
this is great i all ready am confused my dad taught me diff names for theses parts an the bolts ya lets not switch out the allen thingeys with grad 8 with 14 mm an blue lock tight lets keep them lube up so they can vib free peace out !! ok watch more
The two torx bolts... pain in the arse. Why??? The positive battery post next to the body??? Short lug bolts in the Dana 35 ... and the kicker.. Why in the hell use METRIC bolts in an AMERICAN ICON ????????!!!!!! It all gives me a HEAD ACHE !!!!
What was your purpose in watching this vid?? Are you a fashion fop or a Jeep enthusiast? Gimme a f'n break. They're's other UA-cam choices for your "particular" tastes.

Nice video....thanks. I use a Harbor Freight ATV lift for dropping the trans & skid plate.
I REALLY appreciate how you mention which direction is the front of the vehicle to help orient me when watching the video. Great step by step video, much appreciated.

Thanks. I shot over 5 hours of footage for this 27 min How-To and I think the "Be careful how far you lower it" part was truncated.
If you tighten all the other bolts, loosening the rounded head will be easier.
No stress on that bolt adding to the difficulty.
Good vids Mike. Do more. 👍
I need to know how to take a standard transmission out of a Pontiac vibe
eye protection is a must, eye full off oily rust is a no go.
Just squint
I haven't tried this yet, but I have heard that if you save your clutch solenoid for last, you can gently press the clutch to separate the transmission from the engine.
Good video. Just replace those damn torx bolts holding the skid plate with standard bolts. Cheers.
for installation play it in reverse.....love that one.....

a trick my autos teacher taught me with stuck nuts or bolts in a socket chuck it at the concrete the impact will a lot of times knock it loose
Hmmm...that's interesting.

Sounds like you might need some motor mounts as well
Good Point. I'll check them before tearing out the trans.
Thanks you guy have the best how-to videos for jeep xjs and tjs!
Thanks.
Awesome thank you for this video. Love the grunts and groan and the surprises!
You know, you could just look at the size of the socket you used to take out the top 2 bolts... now I have to buy both sockets lol
Nice! Shows me the unlocks secrets that I was anticipating.
Should have tapped that bolt and socket on the ground. Helps bust them apart at times. You did pound it on though. Lol.
Just pulled one myself. Put your jack stand at the back of the transfer case. Gets it out of the way.
Question: on the 91 2.5l are there freeze plugs on the back of the engine block ? Like behind the fly wheel....say no ,say no, say no !
DO NOT "take the top two out last" 22:10

were do u find theses people MAT i think he is one of the bush kids that got losse from the farm in TX
Great video. Loving the Tj stuff.
Maybe missed it but anything on splittimg tramny from bell housing and transfercase?
@bleepinjeep, was it leaking oil? mine is leaking from where it is siliconed together. Do you have a vid on splitting the transmission?

Disregard, I just watched the install video and hadn't noticed that the piece that it mounts to can just be removed.
2nd? Lol thanks mahn I have actually been thinking of taking my transmission out but I never really decided to... now I think I will.
Hope that helps.
Mike can you make a vid on how to troubleshoot a horn and horn system on a TJ...
thanx
I'll add it to the list.

Jackson Gonzalez Bermudez a jeep with a manual transmission does not use a cooler, so there are no lines to worry about.
is this similar to removing an automatic transmission on a 2000 Wrangler tj?
Pretty sure that last screw is the torture in 5th layer of hell... I've been trying to take this transmission out for 2 hours and no other video mentions it
You in Frisco? noticed the Riders hat.
DFW, yes.
Should've made this video in much better lighting
I adore this video content - its so usefull and helpfull.
Hell ya I'll be doing an external slave swap soon, good stuff.
Nice video do you guys have the jeep xj with the 2.5 tdi vm engine in your country?
No
Awesome video, thanks!!
this is not the same guy that did the how 2 on cutting your pinch welds to get aftermarket stuff to fit right new guy
Same for 2.5td??
There’s nothing more terrifying then being under a car even if held up with a jack and jack stands just the knowing that if it fell your dead

Need some more light to see better , informative though !
came here to see what was involved in doing a transmission swap - OK FUCK THAT :D
How does this guy know how to do any of this stuff? He's obviously from Ancient Rome. (What is it with people wearing SPQR lately?)
What was your purpose in watching this vid?? Are you a fashion fop or a Jeep enthusiast? Gimme a f'n break. They're's other UA-cam choices for your "particular" tastes.
Alright how do I get it back in lmao
Thanks...
Take off the tcase before you drop the transmission and save yourself a hundred pounds. and easier to work with.
Oh yea!!!
Seat belts... that awful torx. Seatbelt of all things
first. ;)
Speedy Gonzalez! 👍
