  • This week I'll show you how I like to pull a transmission and transfercase out of a Jeep Cherokee XJ. I hope this will be a reference video for you guys when you need to pull a tranny, so you can see where all the cables, wires, breather lines, etc. are located before you get started. Thanks for watching!

Gotta say Wow, what a great video. The way you show the "big picture" and then go under the jeep for the details shots is perfect! I've just got to replace my flexplate and this makes it look like an afternoon job (unless I run in to some "homeskillet" issues, but I've been under there a bit already since I got it and have run in to most of them). I feel for you with that crossmember deal, wow.

    Very helpful.
    Two questions:
I’m pulling the motor from my 99 xj 4.0, 4wd.
    1. Can I pull the motor, trans and transfer case as one unit with my bumper and header panel off?
And 2. When reinstalling trans do I have to align the torque converter and flex plate in a certain way (indexed) or should I just make sure all the bolts line up and bolt them up together?
Just wondering if I’ll have a imbalance issue if I don’t index it with alignment marks I can make before I pull them apart.
    Thanks.

hey tyler, I had a question, and since you have....well, a lot of jeeps to reference, I figured you might know. I'm swapping out my 242 transfer case to a 231 with an SYE. and one of the electrical connectors (not the speedo, but the one that goes into the housing) has a different fitting with the two t-cases. of course I didn't think to get the connector while I was at the junkyard, but it looks to be only a 6" extension from the main wire harness to the t-case (and the actual fitting that goes into the t-case is a different style and size). my question is, is the fitting uniform throughout the model t-cases (meaning could I just go pull it from another 231)? or does it matter the year of the XJ as well as style of t-case? I hope my question made sense enough for you, lol. thanks

Awesome video!! could you make a video about what you prefer AW4 or AX15 and why? I have a 4.0 donor cherokee sport that I am going to swap into my 2.5L TJ i got the cherokee for free cant beat that!! its crashed on the passenger side not road worthy so I am going to use it to beef up my TJ and make it more capable. my tj has the ax5 and I love driving manual and always enjoy just that feeling of fully driving the vehicle. So I wanted to go with a ax15 but some people tell me to stick to the AW4 because its tougher. Just thought this would be a great idea for a video for you to make if your interested :) thanks!

I see the one brace that mounts onto the driver side of the pan but don't see the other 2 mounting bars. if you have a pic of these connected and where they mount to , would be great. found a 3 part set on ebay for like $30. Guess I need to find a Jeep around here to look at.

    On my 99 xj 4.0.
Will the torque converter only go on the flex plate one way?
I aligned all 3 bolts and torqued them bit when I did the first one I as I was tightening the bolt it sounded like the converter jumped out a notch.
I’m hoping I did not misalign anything but don’t see how.
Before I bolted the trans to the engine I wobbled the torque converter on until it clicked into place three times.

So is it easier to pull a 4.0 engine without the transmission/Tcase or with the Transmission/Tcase? I have to put in a new engine next week and I'm not sure which is easier. Pull the engine with the transmission and disconnect them outside or disconnect the engine from the transmission THEN pull the engine. The transmission is staying on the jeep zj just swapping the engine.

Help I'm from New Zealand and scored my first Jeep been a long time fan & always wanted a Bush Basher but preferbly from the Mopar stable as I'm a Mopar nut although they technically AMC will Was, Anyway scored a Cheap 96 Cherokee as they are plentiful down here (six cly) with no gearbox (Auto) But also scored a 96 -98 Wrangler smashed and written off But has a Good Auto & Motor (six Cyl)
Do the Wrangler & Cherokee share the same box? I'm pretty sure they would be I cant see why they wouldn't be different maybe linkages will be different but box should be the same?
But I noticed in your video your Auto is different to mine I just pulled mine out of the Wrangler today and being a mopar nut the main body looks like the Good Old 904 Torque flite but with a transfer case bolted to the back of it so did models change around 1997-98? to a newer and improved box?

I'm a little new to Jeeps but I'm doing a transmission swap from a 96 into a 89 Cherokee to get the newer 5 speed so I took the flywheel off the 96 and put it on the 89 would that cause the crank positioning sensor to read it wrong because they are different flywheels thus making the Jeep not start (it dose crank) and is there an easy fix or do I need to pull the transmission and put the old flywheel back in or could I possibly just swap computers?

Hi Tyler, how can the front oil pump seal go bad when leaving the torque converter hanging? It is basically resting (hanging) on the shaft which hardly touches the seal because the shaft is setting on bearings. I found that my front oil pump seal was fine while the torque converter was hanging on the tranny for almost 2 years. I did however change the seal just because I was in there and I didn't know how old the existing one had been in there. I just wanted you to enighten me because I though that was an important piece of information you passed on to us. Thank you, again for this awesome video.

    • @bleepinjeep
      @bleepinjeep  6 років тому +1

I think it's dependent on transmission design, but as a general rule, you should always remove the TC for this reason. It's something I read in my ASE test prep text book, so I figured it's important to pass on.

So it looks like to get the tranny n transfer you need to disassemble everything from the vehicle to gain access. I think if I was still a mechanic with a work order to replace the tranny output shaft seal would be the day I'd retire. If it was mine I'd just sell it n buy a manual rig.

I had to replace the trans in my jeep (ZJ) 3 times. I know the headaches, That 42RE cant handle the size of a ZJ, but its fine for XJ's and the like sized/weight jeep. Couldn't find a beefier Trans, so I replaced it with 4L60. havn't had a issue since. On a side note, if I know this video was being uploaded, I would have asked very nicely if since you were right there at the bell housing, could I get that starter? lol, mine crapped out on me a couple of days ago. lol, all and all, great video.

That wood Jig for the jack does not work on the manual transmission(AX15) , because the AX15 does have a flat bottom..but if somebody has a wood patter or jig that accommodates to the AX15 shape it will be appreciated ..regards the AX15 juggler...O yeah I almost forgot Nice Video.

Thanks Baja! I'm not sure what you're referring to on the flat bottom of the AX15, but I used it to pull an AX15 the next day and it worked fine for me. The AX15 can roll on you a little easier than the AW4 because it's not as flat on the bottom. Maybe that's what you meant? It still works, you just need to keep a close eye on it.

Great video but I'd pull the torque converter bolts first. Pet that damn cat though he's dying for attention

I'm cringing to see the body and bulk of the weight held up at those jack stand locations...where it appears a tube was welded in short bursts to lower the transfer case crossmember and reduce vibes/driveshaft angles. Glad nothing shifted on ya.

Seems like my manual clutch job is going to be a lot simpler than messing with all that.
