  • Import Controls which were imposed by the EU on 1st January, 2021 are only now being introduced by the UK after being delayed five times over the past three years. They will make it very much more difficult for small and medium sized enterprises to export from the #eu to the #uk and for UK firms to import from the EU. The result will be a reduction of imports, less selection in the shops, food shortages and higher prices. It is also likely to result in EU exporters ceasing to export to the UK and could well result in many UK companies being forced to close.
There will be less choice, higher prices and shortages. EU suppliers have another 26 countries to deal with without the bureaucratis barriers involved in dealing with the UK.

Whichever way you look at it, Brexit was one of the stupidest things that any country has ever voted for and then subsequently imposed upon itself; if it were another EU Member that had decided to leave in the way we did, we as a country would be looking on, shaking our heads, saying with a mixture of scorn and pity: what a bunch of idiots; don't they realize what they've done? But instead, we' re the ones being laughed at and pitied.

Excellent vid Michael! Not to forget how poorly the government treats truckers. I read somewhere that UK hardly has any designated places to park overnight HGVs (apart from the services areas), nor does it have decent provision of toilets and shower facilities for the drivers. If the poor guy manages to get out of the customs area in 24 hrs time, and then finds it a hassle to park and rest, I don't think any sane individual would want to come back to make another UK delivery ever again, even if offered an above-going wage!

Taxes at the moment, for the workers, 20% PAYE, 10% social, 20% vat, 70% fuel, 20% heating, 8% green tax on top of all fuel.
And now another (20% vat, 10% import duty, total 30% + service charge for tax collection) import tax on most of our food.

I live in Denmark and I used to trade often with UK shops for Birthday presents Christmad presents and my wife used to buy most of her cloth from UK shops today we trade only with danish or german shops as we do then not have to worry about VAT or other rules
It's not a question about "punishing" anyont for BREXIT, but I tried initially to read up on the import rules and I just didn't feel that I could fully understand the rules and also I had to pre-pay amounts into gorverment accounts for the VAT and if it was incorrect I could get an surcharge etc. etc.
So I just found it more safe to just trade with companies within the EU to avoid any risk of an extra bill at my end
I know my families shopping is not even possible to meassure on the economic charts, but I guess if many like me change their habbits it would be meassurable in the big picture:
I do miss the option to shop freely with UK though as I found that many small sole traders had very good an unique products especially around personalized gift items and sporting goods.

Before Brexit, I used to buy bread flour from England. Bisto gravy granules, yeast. Brexit happens and it all stops. I had a supply of gravy granules. I found a couple of places to find flour, in England that is, but of poor quality. Once I found some doves farm strong wholemeal bread flour on Amazon. Under another name. I ordered, and eventually was refunded. Then, at the beginning of the year, all of this stuff was available on amazon. Slightly more expensive, and all the paperwork done, it was coming from England, via amazon.

Whatever you think about the Church of England, it is still a kind of moral arbiter. The Archbishop of Canterbury is on the record as opposing the entire Rwanda scheme. While he was still Prince of Wales, King Charles III made it known that he too was hostile to the idea. The government's solution to the "immigration problem" is one example of how the UK is increasingly turning to outsourcing in order to deal with tricky problems. Where do we send much of our waste? To countries like Turkey, far poorer than ourselves. Do we dispose of our own atomic waste? No, we do not. When we have a case like Shamima Begum, who is a British citizen, we deprive the young woman of her citizenship and leave it again to much poorer countries (like Syria) to deal with her. We could have flown her back to the UK; we could have tried her in a court of law for her alleged crimes; we could have punished her in the case of a successful prosecution with a long sentence. Instead, we palm her off on others. The reason I mention these other cases is because it is part of a very annoying tendency. Instead of sorting out our own problems, instead of finding solutions to the mess of our own making, we shift the entire responsibility towards others. That is not a very moral stance to take, especially if it is at the expense of far poorer countries. I hardly ever agree with the Rt Rev Justin Welby, but on this matter he's absolutely right. The Rwanda scheme is immoral.

Sadly, as with so many changes wrought by leaving the single market etc... people will just become used to it. Decreasing choice, poorer quality food and so many new limitations and impediments and other consequences just become a new normal and people can rapidly forget that it wasn't always thus. It isn't just Brexit either; consider how the concept of a universal free at the point of use healthcare system is becoming watered down. Soon, comprehensive healthcare for all will be presented as some kind of 'aspiration,' a nice idea but something we really can't afford and something we need to ''have that conversation'' about.

A more cynical man would think that the whole Rwanda plan was to drive people in to the black market in the UK itself so that they are nice and cheap. A more cynical man would also argue that the record number of "illegal" immigrant allowed in by a government that supposedly is all about stopping the boats and "taking back control of our borders" might have some thing to do with that. A more cynical man would perhaps also argue that the book Britannia Unchained written by many high-ranking Tories, in which the British people are described as "amongst the most lazy in the world" might be related. But who knows? It might just be that the UK just added a new sort of modern day slavery to its economy to drive down labour costs. But that would be very un Brittish of course, they would never ensla.... oh wait... But in all seriousness, that is just full tinfoil hat thinking and that would require a clever and well thought out plan. Seems a bit of a big ask for these clowns...

    1) How will 20 tonnes of refrigerated 🧈 butter be checked when pallets are wrapped up on cellophaned pallets?
    2) The cold door of the container is opened letting warm air in potentially contaminating the whole batch in a heatwave?
    3) The nearest pallet is cut open and a pack of butter is tested how and for what?
