You know, Jesse practically feels like a cameo character in this scene. It's like an entirely separate family drama but just so happens to be set in the same universe. Really makes it stick out in my mind even with how little presence these characters have in the show at large. Good stuff

i think that's what made the show so freaking good. they always created side characters that felt like real complex humans, which made the show feel so much more realistic. in real life, everyone's got their own life and their own family drama and while you might feel like the main character sometimes (we all do), everyone is just as complex in their own way, and conflicting narratives is what causes conflict. A lot of shows screw up because they don't add this level of complexity to their side characters. Side characters often feel like plot devices that do exactly what the narrative needs them to do and it makes many shows seem simplistic and uninteresting because it's not how real people interact with each other.

Jane's dad was by far the most sympathetic character in the series. He wanted no part of Walter or Jesse's world. As a father ( and counting my blessings) I have no idea how I'd deal if Jane was my daughter. The unfortunate chain of events that later cost the lives of innocent airline passengers was a brilliant piece of writing that illuminates how the actions of "friends of friends" can change the course of one's life.

@@jeffery_tang Yeah, but if Jane’s dad loved her enough to discipline her by calling the cops, she wouldn’t be dead because there would have been no opportunity for Walt to turn her body over onto her back. Besides, getting arrested for drug possession doesn’t necessarily mean jailtime. My friend Jay was arrested as a drug dealer, and he was ordered by the court to choose between jailtime or inpatient rehab. He chose to go for rehab at Teen Challenge where his life was completely transformed, and he was never the same again. Today, he is married to a beautiful woman and has a wonderful child with her.
That’s why I can’t stop crying about Jane’s death. It’s not just that she was trying really hard to keep clean, given that she’s 18 months sober. It’s not just that she’s Jesse’s first love. It’s not just that her death represents a significant turning point in Walt’s morality. It’s not just that her death leads to the deaths of dozens and dozens of airplane passengers as well as her own father’s suicide. It’s also because of the missed opportunity cost of what could have been. It’s the potential beautiful life that Jane and Jesse could have built for themselves, just like my friend Jay did with his life and how even his parents recovered from drugs too.

The fact that even in a situation as dire as this the father takes his pent up rage on anyone else but his daughter. This character is one of the very few of the show that is perfectly moral (Jesse is sympathetic as hell too but anyone in the father’s place would also despise him in this situation). And of course he’s the one who ends up suffering the most.

That scene broke my heart. I felt for the dad. Even the first time i watched it, i was always on his side.

I used to live in a really abusive family and her screaming got to me so much in this scene. It felt so authentic to the desperate cries I'd yell out when my father did his bs. The feeling of desperation in the fact her actress is not holding back her screaming at all when her character is supposed to feel without any control is so freaking accurate

People keep saying they feel bad for Jane's dad, but have you thought about why Jane became an addict in the first place and can't share any of her personal life (relationship with Jesse, relapsing on heroin) with her dad? Your child shouldn't be so afraid of you that they aren't willing to communicate with you about what's going on with their lives. Jane's dad immediate reaction was to be violent and threatening to call the police on his daughter, which is seriously messed up. Your daughter isn't a criminal, she's sick and needs help, and you're not doing anything but making her distrust you. That's how people keep spiralling down this path of being an addict and ruining their lives, because they have no one to turn to who is supportive, compassionate, and understanding, not even their parents.

A lot of comments here and on other platforms have critiiczed Jesse's parents for "abandoning" him, but it's pretty much the same deal with them as with Jane's dad. How many times did they pay for rehab, give him second, third, fourth chances?? How many times did he lie to them or steal from them? The main difference seems to be that they're still together as a couple, and they have another kid to worry about. Speaking from firsthand experience, there's a point where you realize that there's no magic combination of words that will make them see the light, that no one can fix them but themselves, and if you have a wife or other child, you have to let them go before your other loved ones get destroyed in their spiral.

Yeah, we never see their side of the story, so obviously they're going to seem bad. Plus if you're going to give Jesse slack for his mistakes, despite those mistakes costing several lives, then you have to give slack to his parents as well. It just doesn't make sense to view them as worse people than a literal drug dealer and murderer.

    "Takes one to know one"
But like, Jane's dad has a real job, owns property that he rents out, and isn't too bad on the eyes, Jesse was off in this one.
