    This worked for me. Thanks for the tip. My gas cap was the issue, I guess I didn’t tighten it enough after fuelling. The check engine light was still showing so I tried your tip and it worked well. 👊🏼

    Ever since the invention of the heck engine light, we've done the disconnect battery reset. It worked almost every time on every vehicle, however, it doesn't fix sensors if they are bad, just resets the light...if the light is because of a bad sensor the light will come back on. Back in the old days you could get away with the reset if you needed an emissions test. (Light on fails immediately) but newer vehicles (and tests) can tell when scanned that your computer has been flashed (reset) its best just to get it scanned and fix the problem.

    Hi,
    You mentioned the gas cap could be loose, but, if you've got a gas cap issue and it's good and tight, check the gas cap O ring. On an older car you may find a slight crack in the O ring. This is enough to keep the gas cap from properly sealing which causes the Check Engine light to come on. This happened to my girlfriends car. The Toyota dealer didn't have an O ring in stock, so I bought a new gas cap and the problem was solved.
    Regards, Tom

    Some FYI.. Check engine light is designed to indicate a problem within the vehicles engine/tranny electrical systems. The way to erase the light by normal standards, is to check for the error code, fix or replace whatever electrical component is bad. Of course, and a general rule of thumb, is to disconnect the battery when ANY electrical repair is going to be done. By doing this, the check engine light goes out bcuz computer will sense the repair And, the code which would otherwise by All means stay on the computers memory will also be erased. Of course all codes are erased by this process, but good codes that the computer uses to monitor engines electrical system will return after some driving. Reason I take the time to post this info, is bcuz many believe that erasing the check-engine light will fool the inspector when the time for vehicles inspection is due. It is EASY to erase the check-Engine light, but the error code (if any) remains in memory and DMV's inspection computer will get it from the vehicles computer. If that happens, your vehicle will be FAILED. Free is a nice word... Proper, is a better one.

    If you're doing this trying to pass a state inspection, know that while the check engine light doesn't illuminate any more, the "MONITOR NOT READY" (a test to see if the EGR or whatever actually works) will continue. You have to drive the car a significant distance to allow the system to actually check if everything is kosher. To speed the process of getting the monitor not ready codes to go away, google for "drive cycle" for your specific model of car to tell you what to do to activate the tests as soon as possible.

      That is exactly what happened to me when I used the OBD2 land torque to reset an error code for a leaking gas cap. When I returned to have the vehicle re-inspected the inspector told me that the system was showing as not ready. I am still looking for resources on how to do the drive cycle thing to get rid of the not ready status. This is a 2013 Ford Explorer.

    I had a P0440 code pop up right after a fuel stop. I removed and tightened the fuel cap but the check engine light remained.
    I followed your steps and remove the negative cable from the battery, waited 30 seconds while I turned on the lights to discharge any remaining energy... And sure enough as soon as I reconnected the negative cable to the battery, the check engine light was cleared.

Car is maybe worth 375.00 so don't want to pit anymore money in it. Same code P0441 has been a thorn for years. Last year ended up buying a new factory gas cap. Car runs great.. just a pain once again.

    I've been an automotive technician for over 40 years, and you never clear a check engine light. The monitors are all run, and clearing the light clears the monitors. Causing you to fail emissions until they all relearn. Could take several days or even weeks. The proper way to clear light is to find the cause of the issue and the light will go out on its own. Usually in 1 day of normal driving.

  • @Mr.Unacceptable

    Second comment because the first had a link in it.
    If you own any Chrysler vehicle since 1988 you can cycle the key. Cycle the key without going as far as the start 3 times. On-off on-off on-off then on then leave it on but not started. Wait for a few seconds. The flashing light is your fault codes. flash flash pause flash flash flash flash is code 24. Or Flash pause Flash Flash is code 12 which is battery was disconnected. All cars should have this. It will just keep cycling through your codes until you turn it off.

    Thanks! Now I know where to but the OBD so I can fix the problem and shut off the light. I have taken it to the shop 3 times for various issues but the car always come back with the code still on. Its either time to fix it my self or find a different mechanic.

    always scan your car before doing any of those steps, due to many different reason for setting a “check engine light” you want to have that info, do a little research to make an inform decision if you need to take it into a mechanic because there is vital information that helps in diagnostics

    Disconnecting the battery only resets it for 500 km. If your check engine light is on it's on for a reason...it's usually a sensor in the emissions or fuel circuits...

      George Hembrow that’s not why this video is here . It’s here if you replaced the problem and do not have a odb2 reader.
      I sincere hope you do not work on cars 😂

      @@MichelLinschoten hes comment makes more sense than yours. If the light is on you have a problem still turning it off doesnt fix the problem the light will come back on shortly.

    Or if you can't wait you can go to Harbor Freight and buy one. If you have a check engine code, it is recommended to fix the problem ASAP, for if you don't, it can lead to bigger problems. Most sensors in cars go bad and is an easy fix. You can pick up sensors at your local Auto Zone store. If you need to get your car inspected, when you clear codes,they will not give you an inspection sticker unless you drive a few hundred miles after you clear the codes. So make sure if you need to get your car inspected, do that well in advance otherwise you will not get an inspection sticker.

      Yah...but at $50. To $780 a piece for these plastic Fucken sensors, you run put of money fast...and most generally replacing these Fucken sensors doesn't " fix" the problem, only compounds it.

      If the light triggers again that means you have still a problem you have to take care of, but if it was just a loose gas cap then light should stay off.

  • @p_hat

    you were incorrect about the fault codes being a record. The codes are still active on the vehicles PCM, they just haven't reached enough drive cycles before clearing on their own so they still show up on your list even with the fix being deployed.

    Hopefully your mechanical if not you'll be at the mercy of a repair shop , I always try to watch repairs being done , ask lots of questions , see the old parts and test drive the car before I pay with a credit card , Beware of Crooked Shops People

    • @josephine42901
      @josephine42901 5 років тому +2

      You are right!! Crooks! I had a bad experience recently. This crooked mechanic put in a used piece of junk but charged me for a new part. Only was discovered after my car broke down driving from the shop!!

    • @steveanderson461
      @steveanderson461 5 років тому +3

      I too always stand and watch what their actually repairing and always ask for the replaced parts because if they really needed to be replaced they wont have any reason not to give them to you. I also like you pay with a credit card so if their is still an issue I can have the credit card hold and even charge back the bill until they actually fix it right. If their honest they wont mind you watching if they know you.
