  • It is estimated that 20-30% of the adult population will have TMJ problems at some point in their life. TMJD disorder is sometimes called the ‘Great Impostor’ because of the multiplicity of symptoms.
Pain, stiffness, clicking, clunking or popping sounds, and aching in the jaw muscles characterize this debilitating problem.
Classically the headache is strongly felt in the region of the ear.
    Types of TMJD's:
Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD's) are problems affecting the joint between the lower jaw and base of the skull.
There are two temporomandibular joints (TMJ's), one each side of the jaw, that allow the mouth to open and close. These are gliding joints.
There are two types of TMJD's: muscle-related TMJD, which is the more common form, and joint- related TMJD, and these conditions can often coexist.
While it is not a serious condition in terms of it being a threat to life, it can have a serious impact on health.
It is estimated that 20-30% of the adult population will have TJD problems at some point in their lifetime.
    Common Causes:
Muscle-related TMJD's are more commonly caused by clenching the jaw and nighttime teeth grinding, which overworks the jaw muscles and puts the joint under pressure.
Joint-related TJDs are caused by degenerative joint disease, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosis, dislocations, infections, or tumors.
Joint TMJD's typically lead to a popping or clicking of the jaw joint, the jaw locking, pain at the side of the jaw joint (usually one sided), and headaches.
Muscle TMJD will lead to pain on both sides of the jaw joint, headaches, and a difficulty opening and closing the mouth.
    Additional Symptoms:
In addition, any of the following symptoms may also be present: pain in the shoulders, back, or neck; tinnitus (ringing in the ears); dizziness; blurred or double vision; vertigo and nausea; hearing problems; and pain in front of the ears.
    Treatments:
Treatments for TMJD's include medications, mouth guards, splints, surgery, and even joint replacement, but the role of massage and trigger point therapy should not be overlooked and is recognized by medical practitioners.
There are a large number of muscles around the head, neck, and shoulders and to get relief from muscular TMJD's it is best to treat all of these.
As stress and tension can be contributory factors to TMJD's, massage work to relax both mentally and physically will never be wasted.

Had my boyfriend do these exercises to me. I can actually open my mouth without extreme sharp pain. First time in 3 months.

I've been suffering from TMJ for around one and a half years now; It started when I was 17. We went to a jaw specialist who gave me similar exercizes that never quite worked. There was no clarity on what I was supposed to do, so I was just making circle motions on my jaw hoping it'd relieve the pain. It didn't, the pain just got worse and worse. I've been living with a constant clicking noise and pain in my jaw and right ear, and it's been very frustrating. When I performed the exercizes as shown here I got INSTANT relief. An euphoric sensation of relaxation. I'm so relieved, it feels as if a giant burden has been removed.
    Thank you so, so much.

@@whatever4566 MOUTHGUARDS CAUSE PROBLEMS. I wore one for 2 1/2 months. went back 4X for adjustments. unfprofessionals tried to adjust., but nothing helped, Finally i asked for someone who was more experienced and she adjusted 2X and both times she said it was too TIGHT! it also cut my cheeks for 2 months. I kept complaining of this and noone wanted to do anything about it. They kept saying if we do too much it will be loose and wont fit right. BUT, instead being new to NG, not knowing what to expect, NOW i have tmj jaw muscle pulling and tension like crazy! The only thing that relieves this is IF i chew gum, BUT chewing gum will make it worse. So any suggestions anyone?? Please?

    Massage is wonderfully shown.
As a adjunct try a horizontal cork placed in one's mouth. Immediately you will feel the mouth closing. Fascinating to understand that not speaking up locks the masseter. So many of us were told to keep quiet or else..

This is great, thank you. But, could you provide a little more detail on how to find those release points? For a non-therapist? I am not exactly sure what I am looking/feeling for.

Dear Friends, hope you all are keeping well.
I had the same issue and i had spent many days and nights with this extremely severe pain, I did remember one day the pain was unbearable that i even could not sit and kept walking in my room.
Hight capacity pain killers are effective for sometime only so i can consider the situation you are into,
But luckily, one of my brother in-law who used to be a wrestle visited my home and asked me what happend, i explained him the issue, he said give me some olive oil and i will message you i said okay, He took some oil in his palm and apply on my left side neck and gently started going up and down and after 3/4 minutes he started doing with little bit more power then i had sensation kind of thing in my neck and behind the left ear he kept doing it for few more minutes and instantly i felt relaxation, he asked me to do the same 2/3 time more, i let the oil there and dried it with dray cloth, and after 15 minutes had good bath with luke warm and from that day i am all okay so i would suggest you to do the same.
If any question ask me freely.
Wish you all very good health.

clearly this demonstrator doesn't have TMJ because I was almost screaming getting this done haha. Great info though, very helpful. When I told my dentist about my jaw pain he said "that sounds like TMJ. sorry man, maybe just massage yourself? can't do anything about that."
pro tip: military medical is free for a reason.

If the jaw deviates to the left it means the left side trigger points to be worked?

I feel there is a small ball near my cheek bone, is that normal? 😅

    • @Nielasher
      @Nielasher  24 дні тому

Feeling a small ball-like sensation near your cheekbone can be concerning, but it might be related to tension in the muscles around your jaw, such as the masseter or even the TMJ itself. It's a good idea to get it checked by a healthcare professional to rule out other possible causes and to receive the correct treatment advice. In the meantime, continue with gentle massages, ensuring not to apply too much pressure. Stay safe! 😊 🙌
