  • This video is a review and field test of the Sirui AM-284 Carbon Fibre Tripod, used in combination with the K-30 Ball and Socket head. For some while I have been looking for a small lightweight travel tripod that will enable me to quickly get the tripod down to low level. This tripod is something that I will use for macro, landscapes and general photography.
Surui are doing a Black Friday and Cyber sale. The sale runs from the 14th to th 30 November.here are the links to the sales.

Thanks Roger, this was just the information about this tripod I was looking for! There is no sense buying a travel tripod just because its light if its unstable....
I think I'm going to buy the Sirui AM-284 along with the Center column for my trip to Prague this September.
PS: Thanks for the HONEST REVIEW..:)

Glad you liked it Mark. I was not aware that it took a central column ? I would check first. I bought the tripod because of compactness and the fact it was quick to get flat to the ground. I do find that the fact it will not go to my full head heigh a bit limiting at times. If you can get a central colomn to use on it I would be interested to know about it.

Nice review Roger. Seems like a useful piece of kit, especially as it opens up flat.

Thanks David. As a small tripod for use with the smaller camera kit its fine. Would not be any use with the longer telephotos.

@@rogerhance5883 Thanks Roger. I was more thinking like you of macro usage. I’m still using the Benbo Trekker, but always on the lookout for other options.

@@davidosborn3356 For macro photography it is helpful to have a small portable tripod that you can carry around. My old manfrotto used to have a removable central coloumn, but it was a pain to have to keep removing it and replacing afterwards. Thats why I like this one. There are other makes that are probably just as good, so maybe worth looking around. It is handy having one you can put into a side pocket of the smaller camera bag.

Looks very similar to my Artcise AF 80C, this one is large and no center column, I dislike center column , they wobble and get in the way when trying to get low to the ground. Have just purchased a Travel Tripod (looks the same as your one in your Video) as we are going to Australia in March, it is another Artcise NS 60C, very light, no center column and a slightly lower head to enable really close groundwork as you have shown in your Video. The Artcise comes with a center column that you can change out with the supplied attachment. Also have a mini for bench work and Macro it is a Evumo MT5C, all are carbon fibre, all are beautifully made and all were purchased from Aliexpress. Would highly recommend all of them having like you had many tripods in the past. The Surui looks like it came from the same factory ! Cheers Roger

I googled the Artcise AF 80C and it looks a very nice tripod. As you say, both are very similar

Hi, I dont think you will be dissapointed. As a small lightweight tripod for landscape, macro etc its very good . It will allow you to get very low to the ground. I like that its well made, light and portable. Its not really up to the job for a heavy telephoto , but for general photography it great. They have just sent me a bigger tripod with a gimbal head to test out for use with longer, heavier lenses. It will be interesting to see what its like.

That looks like a small version of my Gitzo and could be very useful for the OM1 which does not require such a solid tripod. A few questions please.. Does the tripod permit small increases in height when you press the blue buttons or are the stops quite coarse adjustments ? Does the ball head lock without creeping/sag as you tighten it, does the head pan smoothly in the horizontal plane and provide a bit of resistance ? My (far more expensive) Markins is poor in this regard as it just has a knob that you tighten and it is a bit on/off in action as you pan.
Finally. if you were to buy this setup would you go for the K40 head or do you think the K30 is adequate ?
    Thanks Roger.

Hi John, The tripod is fine for the Om1, providing you do not put heavy lenses on it. Its fine for macro and general photography and it is light to carry. The big thing for me was the abititly to carry a small lightweight tripod that will go down flat on the ground. The tripod will not premint small adjustment unless you loosen the twist locks. To be honest, there are probably better tripods on the market, but this one fullfils my needs for macro. I also use it as a blogging tripod. It would certainly not be strong enough for use with the big 150-400mm lens. Another `niggle` is that it will not quite get up to my full eye height. Its did not bother me at first but it is slightly annoying. The K30 head is good, but the head that I have on my bigger tripod ( a Benro) is better. Its smaller and lighter than the K30, but just as strong. I certainly would not have thought you would need to go to the K40 on this tripod. Hope this helps.

@@rogerhance5883 . Thanks for that Roger, I would probably just use it as you do for travel and macro. I presume you are using a Benro head on your Benro tripod can you remember which model ?
