    Edinburgh and tram info:
I have relatives over there and was lucky enough to get to Newhaven on opening day, the 14th of June (I think the original tramway opened on the 14th of June 2014). The trams started about midday and I made the third tram.
Edinburgh trams take bikes which is useful to know.
Newhaven is worth a visit. It's an ancient village consumed by Leith. There used to be 30 shops and 6 pubs but it was almost completely demolished, suburbinised and rebuilt in the 60's.
There's some rather interesting and singular locals who have turned the backcourts into a community garden where they grow figs, cherries, rhubarb etc., and have done amazing stuff to pretty up the village. They turned the old school into a community centre with an active Man Shed.
Beside an ancient tree there's a rather haunted cycle shop where one of the best wheel builders in Scotland has more ghosts than customers. An ruined church is opposite so perhaps that explains things. Another church is a climbing centre. There's a separate electric bike tour shop along the street.
The houses by Newhaven terminus are on reclaimed land. The spot you started from is the slipway where Mulberry Harbour Pontoons for D- Day were being built in a 1943 photo. They are on the stocks with another one floating and tied up at the pier which is now a car park. it's all quite filled in. If you nipped into ASDA, you'd be out at sea.
At Picrady Place there was a statue of Sherlock Holmes but he got moved for the tramstop. Just after Picardy Place, on York Place there are the well worn points where the trams changed direction and lanes when York Place was the terminus. The point rails are visibly stepped with 10 years of wear as the wheels ground round from the point curve onto straight track.
At Haymarket, Haymarket Yards is ex railway land beside platform 0. There's offices with the tramway alongside. As it gains height to pass Haymarket MPD, there's a tramway bridge beside the railway bridge. This tramway bridge has concrete castings to take a junction and aim tracks up the Roseburn Cycle Path, Walkway and Wildlife corridor. This never happened, partly due to the huge over budget- ness of it all and partly due to the huge amount of protest because of the walkway's popularity.
Bankhead is on the old Sighthill guided busway. I think the 21's used it. They put all these nice handy bridges and embankments in for the busway (parallel to the railway) which was ever so convenient for a tramway a few years later.
At Ocean Terminal, I did a double take because behind the Britannia was a CalMac vessel, well out of place as CalMac serves the Clyde and Hebrides. I was told by some steamer nerds in CalMac territory that it was the mv Finlaggan, which serves Islay from Kennacraig, in for overhaul.

Was there two weeks prior to opening at Leith thinking why there were no trams only realised once we got back to London that it was opening shortly after. So good to see it's now up and running.

Brilliant final episode of the I visited series (for now) Nick, I still need to do the Edinburgh trams myself and after that, it will be all the UK metro systems complete for me. Those boats sure were big and yes, who doesn't love a good park?

If you're ever interested in getting a good shot of a train in future, there's a location by the national gallery and one by waterloo place which are best for train shots outside the station

Hi, Nick, thanks for keeping producing my favourate re-run transport videos.
After you've done with British trams, you can just hop on train from St. Pancras and cross the English Channel and visit Lille, France which has trams and metro.
I suggest you could do I Visited Lille Trams video, and perhaps film The Least Used Metro Station in Lille before Geoff ever does.

Edinburgh used to have two tram systems in operation :- let me explain ; Edinburgh itself ran a cable -car system but outside of Edinburgh ,Musselburgh ran its own electric car system which extended east to Port Seton and west to Joppa where you had to change from Musselburgh’s electric trams to Edinburgh cable cars -I think the whole length of track ,in total of the 2 systems ,was 50 plus miles.

Hello Nick, I've been loving the content you've been putting out! If you ever get the opportunity, I would really recommend checking out Vienna (and maybe Austria as a whole, it's very impressive). In the city you can ride on all trains, trams, underground and busses on a single fare, there are probably many cool places to do some train-spotting too.

The fact that you can get a single ride for £2 except to/from the airport which is £7,50. When I visited Edinburgh, I made the decision to rise between Picardy Place and the airport and back to Princes Street as I enjoy riding all froms of transport. The extension just under construction at the time (2021). I will go back there at some point in 2024. Public transport is also free for all under 21s but was not in place at the time

Ingliston Park & Ride is a quite useful P&R for me, I've been there plenty of times. Great road connections, when coming from the north, it's easy to get off the motorway, park at Ingliston & take the tram into the centre. Free parking, saves driving in the centre which is often a challenge and parking is quite expensive there. Perfect solution.

You mentioned the expense of a ticket to get to the airport... I could be wrong here but I believe that a plusbus ticket for Edinburgh includes the full tram network also? So that could be a neat way to cover it on the cheap (even cheaper if you have a railcard!!)

    • @EdwardMason9000

If you're in Edinburgh for at least 2/3 days and you're making a return trip to the Airport you're as well buying a week's bus pass for £22. My main criticism of the trams is that they have not extended the daily/weekly capping from the buses to the trams as well for £4.80/£22 yet. I haven't ridden the extension yet although have walked most of the extension between Leith and Newhaven in 2021.
