That turned out great even after the trouble you had cutting the back off. I found that not gluing on the back until you have the drawer cut out first. I just double sided tape on the back while cutting the outside shape then remove it for the drawer cutting.
Great video john👍 thanks for showing the mistakes since they're vital to the learning process. Like they say "the sign of a good woodworker is how well they can build, but how well they can hide their mistakes". Loving the content, keep doing what your doing.
John, some mistakes give projects character and show the human side. Projects done by factory machines just don't have that character. Enjoyed this video very much! Bill Larrabee, Pulaski, N. Y.
First time iv ever commented on UA-cam vid but was very impressed by ur mistakes in my opinion making mistakes is great not learning from them is when they become a problem but where u did make them u clearly quickly learnt from them and allowed us the viewer to learn aswell before making them ourselves as someone who is self taught and learns mostly from mistakes it’s good to watch and learn from someone else’s mistakes
Thanks mate, good video. It's kinda nice to know that you pros don't always get it right. ;-) I made my first bandsaw box the other day for the missus on Valentine's Day, it was merbau front and back with pine core. I don't think I'll do pine again, so have clamped up some plywood and will clamp something like oak on the front and back for the next one. I've seen some others who don't bother clamping the back on until after the front and drawer are cut out, which is interesting as it means you don't need to resaw the back off, saving you a step...
Now that's a lovely thing 😁. Nice recovery by the way, well done👍. I'm in the process of a very simular recovery (also caused by my bandsaw drifting). But I have 300 tiny little blocks of wood to re-cut before I even get to the glue up 🙁. I'm sure it will be fine 😁. Hope the knee is fixing itself well. Thanks for the video , stay safe 😁👍.
Great end result John ! Fair play for sorting out the band saw mare. It's my least favourite machine in my shed but seeing this project makes me want to give it a proper go. Nice one.
I' had the same problem cutting the backs off my band saw boxes until I started setting up my bandsaw using Alex Snodgrass's videos My saw tracks true now I also prefer not to have to keep changing the blades Enjoying your videos
Absolutely love watching other Irish tradies 😂! Love the piece was looking for ideas for my own box and came at the right time , keep up the savage work John :)!
Nice box! It occurs to me that a lot of woodworking is not “how to make” but “how to fix the oops!” That was a great save. My bandsaw pulls away from the fence too. Even with a brand new blade. In my case, I think a lot of the problem is I stored the band saw with tension on the spring for about 9 months. I have a new spring to install. I’ll let you know how that goes! As always, thanks for a great video!
Hello from Findlay, Ohio. Great save John. It’s a beautiful bandsaw box. Our best teacher is allows our last mistake. Thank you sharing your mistake on the cut and how you made the save. I’m a new subscriber and making my way through your earlier videos. I really enjoy your channel.
Hi John, got omit lost a bit of how it looks but tried sticking with the way you’re talking. Must admit I do like Danish oil been using it on old Jack planes what I’ve been given to restore and they feel absolutely amazing with it on haven’t got a clue what they look like but they feel good to me
Lovely video John, introducing great techniques. Bandsaws are fantastic machines, but I share your frustration when they don't perform as expected. In respect of cutting the internal shape, I would perhaps consider leaving it in two halves and cutting with a scroll saw, then gluing them together. But all's well that ends well as they say. The box was lovely.
Awwww what a shame about that cut. I hate when things like that happen. That came out really great though, well done getting over the little mistakes.👍🏻
Thanks for this. I'm going to attempt one on my next project. Really enjoyed this video Sir. I'm subscribed. Much respect from 🇨🇦 Canada. Please continue. I love the shop by the way. Cheers!!🙏🤙
always enjoy the honesty you show when tackling these things - very refreshing to see and takes away that bit of apprehension that a hobbyist like myself would feel when trying to take on similar jobs. Must admit, though, I'm not really 100% sure what this box is for - while you were making it I assumed it was something to store a rolled up bandsaw blade in but it looks too small for that, so I'm guessing the name "bandsaw box" is just describing the technique rather than the purpose. I bet you could get a couple of nice guitar tops out of that spalted maple if you jointed them. Hope the knee gets better soon!
Beautiful work. It looks like the grain running from the bottom right corner would ha e also worked and then any imperfections from the glue up would have been on the bottom and it takes some of the lateral play out of the drawer. Good job as always.
Very educational video. You covered a lot of ground and techinques. Just one thing you didn't cover was your eyes. I use mine for a living and I really encourage you to wear eye protection. But keep on teaching us. Thank you.
Greetings John from Canada! I watched this video first and then I just watched your video, regarding the initial setup of this new band saw. In that video you mention two schools of thought as to where the blade should track on the pulleys. Seeing that I was wondering if you have tried setting the thinner blades towards the back of the gullet so that the tension is more on the teeth? Maybe that might help the thinner blades cut more squarely?
Now John that's not true at all. You have a beautiful shop. everyone shop is different and as long as you are happy there my friend it's the best shop in the world. I love your layout in the way you've done things they're very very nice. And I can tell you like things organized and in their place. And that's the best way with me. I especially like your bench. From Doug. PS when you get a chance check out my majestic butterfly I just put out yesterday. I would truly love to get your opinion and thoughts on it. I have a large block of Walnut that needs some epoxylaid into it to fix the imperfections I think I will use it to make a bandsaw box and see what it looks like. Let me know what you think of the butterfly I would really really like to hear. From Doug
My husband uses a Heinz mustard lid on his glue bottle, it works on the bottles like you are using. Titebond round bottles. The mustard like wont plug up.
hello, today I drew a box, similar to yours!. My saw has a maximum height of 80 mm, when designing, I thought, to make the inner branches smaller, I will use a 20 mm diameter fostner drill. when cutting the bottom, it is necessary that the guide has to be the same height as the box, these guides lower, the saw starts to cut with one measure and another comes out.
Nice project. Where did you find Colorcore as tiles? All I can find are rolls of it as thin veneer. I've tried regular floor tiles, but they don't work as the glue does not hold.
This morning I was attempting to resaw some walnut to glue up for a blank. I had the same problem with a 3/4 inch blade. Checked all my settings tried again same problem. Switched to a new 1/2 inch blade it cut perfectly. It took some time all morning but what hell I'm retired. Anyway I liked the vid and the way you solved your problem.
I have been looking for some black sheets like that for a long time, in Denmark they are insanely expensive. I've found them at $90 for one single 8"x12" sheet. It's ridiculous. 😖 Thanks for the video.
Really like they way you show your mistakes. Everyone else shows just perfect cuts. I'm glad to see you show the same things I do and how to adjust to make it look better
I tonight was making my 15ish box and forgot to cut the face off the drawer before carving out the interior. Now the only thing I can think to do is cut a separate layer to veneer the entire front of it and hope it works out. Dang it
The one thing I thought about which I do not think anybody has commented on is ‘does the band saw blade fit and how many can you get in there’. It looks rather small!
come in from the bottom if you can, cant see the exterior line if its underneath. i would have come in just inside the leg on the bottom right and gone straight into the curve so you dont have to end the cut on a curve just nice and simple straight cut across the bottom untill you get back to the line and youre done.
Super glad to see you back! Hope the knee is in the mend. We’re always happy to see any of our brothers break through a tough spot of burn out; and small projects that come to you in the moment and shop improvements or shop convenience projects are always a good way for anyone of us to break through (UA-cam or no UA-cam). 👍
When you make it like that by laminating, wouldn't it be a good idea to wait with the back piece? Then you don't have to hide the cut, just glue the last piece on when it's time for that.
Hi John, I've never done of these but why would you add the final lamination then cut it off, surely you could add the final lamination after cutting the inner shelf out. You could then add the final lamination and shape it. I can't wait to see the more organic shapes you make. 👍
Never a good idea to attempt resaw type cuts with a blade used for cutting curves. Teeth a very likely worn with a bias to one side. NIce save though :)
That turned out great even after the trouble you had cutting the back off. I found that not gluing on the back until you have the drawer cut out first. I just double sided tape on the back while cutting the outside shape then remove it for the drawer cutting.
Love that you share mistakes and drive on. Thanks.
Really like the addition of the black tiles. Will use that in the future. Thanks.

Love how you show mistakes and how to try to fix them 👍

Excellent work! I especially enjoyed how you ‘corrected’ your errors and made the box look very nice! Keep up the good work John!!
Thank you very much!
John, some mistakes give projects character and show the human side. Projects done by factory machines just don't have that character. Enjoyed this video very much! Bill Larrabee, Pulaski, N. Y.
Very good effort John and you show the disasters fair play no one is perfect and God loves a trier
Looks nice. I really like that colorcore material. Thanks for sharing this video.

Just ran across you while looking at learning how to make these. I love your energy! I am going to try a few of your other videos now.
Awesome! Thank you!

Thanks John, great video. I like the formica layers in between.
Just bought a bandsaw and looking forward to making some boxes.

Great job. Made my first bandsaw box last week and had a load of mistakes but got there in the end. Some great tips in here. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Nicely done Sir!! Very much enjoyed the human side of the build.
Thanks 👍

Yeah it's called a bandsaw box because it's made on the bandsaw Google them and you will see just what is possible
Very nicely done! I just got a bandsaw and this is giving me some good ideas. Love the videos keep them coming!
Good stuff!
A great looking bandsaw box John and a great recovery 👍

The grain on the Sapele is really nice. Good save on the back.
It is nice it would have been a shame if it didn't work! I was sweating for a bit lol.
Loved the video , also your very easy on the eyes
Thank you! 😊
I’m glad to hear your bandsaw screams like mine does. Now I know that sound is normal!
yep they screech

Very nice box. The Color Core accents are a great idea. Thanks! 👍👍
BTW: I'll bet the same "sandwich" would make an interesting bowl blank.
That would be cool!

Keep cracking and bash on . Nice box. I'll have to try some of that Formica

I'm super apprehensive about using a fence on my band saw. It cuts at like 15deg from table true. I just try and eyeball it the best I can.
I have been looking for some black sheets like that for a long time, in Denmark they are insanely expensive.

try the alex snodgrass setup method on your band saw I'd love to see if it helped
Looks good 👍, going to give it a go, where did you source the colour core ? That stuffs a good idea, could incorporate that into lots of projects
Parabéns trabalho lindo demais ganhou mais um escrito
Almost ended up in the bin!!!
"Almost" is the important part. 😊
Great work 💪🏻
Huptown Saturday Night !!
Can you please let me know what exactly the “color core product you used? Is tin just Formica sheets? Or hdpe plastic..
Than you so very much
Chris
Very nice!
Thanks!
Great video and result! Also, shout-out to a fellow guitar builder 😀
Cheers!
Love the grain on the front, hard to get this in local timber in Australia unless you use a veneer
Lovely piece of work where do you get the wood only ever seen to get pine here
McMahons is where I buy my hard wood
John, why didn’t you make the entry cut from the bottom where the grain also runs?
Another fun video ,nice job .
Glad you enjoyed it
I tonight was making my 15ish box and forgot to cut the face off the drawer before carving out the interior. Now the only thing I can think to do is cut a separate layer to veneer the entire front of it and hope it works out. Dang it
Hi John..
Awesome Bro.
Please Request you to make WOODEN BOOKARC STAND FOR APPLE LAPTOP ..IT WILL BE A GT HELP..):
The one thing I thought about which I do not think anybody has commented on is ‘does the band saw blade fit and how many can you get in there’. It looks rather small!
It is looks very nice. I bet no one will see the cut line when see this grain :) :)
I thought that we would get a Father Jack impression, "Feck, arse, drink", when the bandsaw went awry. Well saved.
Would you believe I was outside Father Teds house last weekend! I was cursing on the inside!!
Hi John

Very nice made. What is the name of the black sheet you used in your project, I heard it ten times but I couldn't understand.
Its called ColorCore is made by Formica
How did the Color core bond with the Titebond go?
Not sure we can get it in Australia anyway.
Works great still perfect to this day.
Really beautiful work, John! Looks fantastic! 😃
About finishes, try some shellac when you can. 😉
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks for the tip!
could you have gone in from the bottom to cut out the drawer? That way the cut line would be on the underside and not visible.
When you make it like that by laminating, wouldn't it be a good idea to wait with the back piece?
Then you don't have to hide the cut, just glue the last piece on when it's time for that.
Thank god your not perfect 😊 it gives me hope. Thanks

Yes it would be easier to use maybe double sided tape to hold on the back piece and then glue it later.

Hi John, where did you source the formica card from ?
Hello, what is that black material called you are using between the layers? I did not understand you, because my english is not so good.
Thank you!
Its Colorcore by Formica
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed Is it formica laminate or is it made from thick paper?

What was the name of wood that was on top of the box
Sapele, also know as African mahogany
What is the black accent material used.
And where did you get it.
It's Colorcore from Formica you will need you source it for yourself, I was given some by a friend.
