The eggs can be a chore to shell when cooked but bite sized pickled eggs are so good. And quail are a good backup food if needed. Thanks for checking out the video.
Use that cheapo cushy plastic liner with holes in it, use it for everything like a bottom drawer liner super perforated. Small dog crate, yepper. Oh and line the top with it w zipties too so they dont hit their heads when they get frisky lol
Turned out great, loved that you used the dog crate! Thanks for going over your set up, we have definitely considered adding quail but would need to research that some more :)
Thank you so much. 🙂 I'm glad that you checked out this video after watching the first quail hutch build. The wood floor and other areas that let poop gather and stack up were a bad design. The dog crate worked great but I did catch a mouse or two in the plastic tray under the cage. So having a place where mice could get to the quails feet was also a bad design. I wish we could have had them on real ground during the day. In the end I think that a wire floor is best. One where poo just falls to the ground below.
We have wild calif.quail nesting in one of our plant pots for the second time. Never saw them hatch though.Had a wild mallard lay eggs under one of our trees in the back yard, got to see them hatch .😀
Cool! The only issue I had was sometimes a mouse would climb into the sliding poop tray at the bottom of the cage. I did have the little upper shelf platform thing for the quail so I figured if a mouse was under their feet they could move up to the upper deck. But we never had an issue with nice getting to the quail.
I love this video because i did the same thing with two dog kennels end to end and use the side doors for entray way,, i use the oil pan trays cause i get used kennels cheap with no tray, works great and is inexpensive,, the kennels are 3 ft. tall 42" long ,22 inches deep.. wooks great..hagd.
Can you/have you considered lining the tray with newspapers? The paper will compost as well. Seems it could make easier cleanup to just pull the paper and droppings off the tray rather than have to scrape it. Where I live there are free community newspapers to pick up in grocery stores and other places. The publishers collect old ones to recycle and may be happy to have someone offer to take some. I don’t have my quail yet but that’s my plan.
They say that there hutch shouldn’t be more than 10 inches high. How have you avoided your quail from flying up and injuring themselves? I have 10 identical cages and wanted to do the same thing as you.
Please dont keep them on wire floors it can damage the birds feet among other things. It is best to use bedding such as pine shavings and then scoop it out when its time to clean.
What type of wire did you use? I had used chicken wire on the bottom but it seems a little big, I am worried it might inure my bird with sustained use.
I believe that it was 1/4 inch hardware cloth (wire). I made sure to have a few solid surfaces that they could be on if they wanted. We don't have quail anymore but if we ever get them again I would love to figure out how to have them on the ground.
@@AlmostHomestead I used chicken wire for my little crate for my chukar since she was getting dirty feet, what sort of solid surfaces should I put in her cage and also how do you keep the wire fastened and from drooping downward, I have been using zipties and string right now but don't know if it is good enough.
I picked up the wire in a free bin at a garage sale. Not sure what kind it was but it was thin enough to work with easily. I just started the wrap at the open end without covering the threads. Then wrapped up toward the other end, back to the open end back to the other end until I had the jar cradled in the wire.
I'm not sure. 1/4 inch hardware cloth is what I used. I did try to give them solid objects to climb around on as well like branches and a flat piece of wood.
This cage is far too small for any living creature let alone sensitive birds like quail who's instinct is to hide undercover. What is the point of poor animal husbandry when improvements are so simple.
I'll keep adding branches and foliage for cover and food. I might add a little shelter structure at some point. If they start to show signs of stress I will reduce the number of birds in the cage. Thank you for your comment.
Nice idea!!! Glad they are singing
Omgoshwhat a GORGEOUS area you live in soooooo jealous!
Seeing your quail setup makes me want to get some... so tiny... little round food poopers, they are! 😂

The quail apartment looks great. Trial and error and now you got it. I would want a slide out tray for mine too. One day I will have quail.
Quail apartment. I love it. That slide out poop tray has changed my life. Haha!
I have 3 or 4 of the.smaller.dog crates and this is what I plan on doing with the quail I just bought today
Cool! Good luck with your quail.
We learn as we do. Looks good. Hope your neighbors are behaving themselves. Have a good week and stay safe.
Definitely Lorie. Things have been pretty quiet lately. Have a good day!

That has a great setup man! The more I watch your quail videos the more I want to get some
Thank you. They are pretty easy to take care of. Aside from being little poop factories. Haha!
Ha I get it now. Was a little confused at first on the IG post.
The new place looks great.
Hope you guys have a great day.
Haha! It's working out very well. So much nicer to deal with. Have a good one guys.

Oh man, sounds great! 😁👍

Thanks! That crate hutch is working out so good. And that poop tray is fantastic. Those little suckers are pooping machines.
Just came from your other quail house video, great set up the changes are great!

Elf Lords Journeys Wow, that’s cool James. Are they the quail with feather(s) sticking up on the top of their head?
Yes,the males have the plumage.
Omg!!! Thank you for this video!!! This will help me so much

Hello Jay, that is a great set up. Thanks 💕 NonnaGrace

Oh that's great. 👍 Sounds like you have a nice setup.
It should have been easy if u made a small aviary with bushes in the first place .. small suggestion

Sounds like a good idea. I think that could work. We haven't had quail for several years now. 🙂

We don't have quail anymore buy we never had any injure themselves in the cage when we did have them.

What kind of wire and how did you wrap it around waterer to hang it? Nice little setup.

@@AlmostHomestead THANKS, I'm gonna give it a try.
What would you use if you wanted to make a safe floor grate for a bird like a chukar or a pigeon?
I'm not sure. 1/4 inch hardware cloth is what I used. I did try to give them solid objects to climb around on as well like branches and a flat piece of wood.
@@AlmostHomestead do you know the best way to prevent birds from getting bumblefoot on grated floors?
How many did you have in the cage? How many females to males?
We ended up keeping 5 females in this cage.
Almost Homestead did you keep any roosters in there? Or do you have them in seperste cage
But can you build one while wearing a beaver coat?
Gardening in Gnome town Haha! I think that coat would have gotten stuck on that hardware cloth and shredded. 😁
Almost Homestead your right! My bad
Gardening in Gnome town Haha! No, you good. 😆👍
Almost Homestead ah ha ha thanks Man.
Я бы хотел этих перепелак развести как насчёт яйца друг
Really??? No animals should never ever walk or live on wires!!!🥺🥺
We didn't like them being on wire either. We no longer have quail.
@@AlmostHomestead But you did it anyway! 😳😳. Hope you have become more aware of how to treat animals for a better life for all!🙏🏻❤️
