Thank you for making this tutorial! I was just thinking to create a 3D version of my Mando helmet so I can use it for my SFM animation later. So far your instructions are easy to follow. We'll see how it goes when I got the time to make one! Once again, thank you!
I got into 3D modeling for my semester and one of my big personal goals is to make starwars 3D models. I’ve been using maya and I’m very beginner, within a week or two I’m going to follow this tutorial and see how I handle it. I used blender before but that was a few years ago, I’m excited this will be a nice project for me.
This was the best tutorial for this helmet, and it was pretty detailed. One problem I faced was that the hide button (H) didn't hide the faces. It just made the face not able to be clicked. Like, I would press H and then I wouldn't be able to click the "hidden" faces but I still would see them. How would I fix this?
It took me a while due to major mistakes, but I got to complete the mesh. Obviously due to me not doing some parts perfectly there are some differences, but I still think it looks great.
Great Tutorial so far but grid fill doesn't work for me at 16:50 it says: Loops are not connected by wire/boundary edges. Any help is appreciated! EDIT: Fixed it, somehow there were multiple vertices at one point and the structure wan't fully connected. Selected all tops veticies and merged by distance and now it worked! Maybe useful for others!
I'll try explain this as best as I can for a novice, but at 3:47 the 'e,x" method works fine and it's creating the loops or lines as you see there but on the right, but on the left, while it's extruding it out and putting it in the right place, it's not creating those edge loops or lines.
I'm following along and having issues getting a straight line for the bottom of the helmet. I also did not get it very ground until I went into top orthographic view and rounded it manually. Otherwise, it seems to be going well so far.
after adjusting the topology of the mask, I moved on to the band on the back of the helmet and found a simpler way than what is stated here by using the spin tool. Select the edge, click on the spin tool and rotate to the back of the helmet, done.
Ya there are some little details we don't have maybe? Followed to the letter and some strange vertex creasing where it shouldn't be making it totally not printable or water tight. Will be continuing to try tho
Try shift + N to recalculate normals, that sometimes helps. But you may have to do a bit of testing on your own to get the proper effect you want. Glad to hear you want to 3D print it
@@tamicoker will surely give this a shot. I appreciate the help. And yes I hope to print it and see how it turns out. If I get positive results I'll surely add a link to the finished products photos.
Fantastic tutorial! I’ve used this several times already as I work on creating a few different helmet files. I was wondering though, is there a setting/series of settings to prep the file for 3D printing. My models seem to have lots of errors when I export them as stls. I’m probably doing something wrong lol.
Genuinely glad you found it helpful. I could definitely make a video where I refine the model for 3D printing as a few people have mentioned it already, so I could have that out in a week or so. Part 2 is out already for material customisation.
im following the tutorial (which is pretty great BTW) but when i go to subdivide after completing the top part of the helmet, some odd creases appear on the helmet. trying to merge verts doesnt really help either. Not really sure why this is happening, i went back and redid it exactly as you did.
trying this with the new version of blender. is it possible that the way the F2 tool works changed? it seems to be making triangles. Not sure it could also just be me not using it right. Does is there a difference between filling and manually extruding and snapping the vertices? thats the way im following along
I just tried the addon in Blender 3.0, it seems to be working the exact same, if you're getting a filled triangle as opposed to a fourth vertex, it may be that you've selected 3 vertices and used the default fill function. Select the middle vertex, and [press 'f', that's how it should work
At around 16:45 when you do the grid fill, how are you able to select the mirrored geometry? I can not select the edges of my mirrored geometry, I am using Blender 3.0 so maybe that is the issue?
Hello, I was wondering where do I start when creating a helmet without any concept arts? I only have a photo of what it looks like in it's game (TRAIBLAZER-Class Mjolnir) and I want to know how to create it's helmet despite me being a beginner. I would like to know some ways to create helmets in this situation, it would help me out a lot!
Most important thing is PATIENCE, you're a beginner, so don't expect to make the result you hoped for on the first attempt. I recommend following many tutorials, like this one, to accumulate skills and learn the software better. Experiment by deviating from the tutorials, do your own thing. Then, once you feel ready, start the dream project. It will be difficult to make a model without proper reference images, however it is still attainable, it's within your capacity, but you have to be patient and dedicated.
question for anyone who can help, i model things for 3d printing, models have to be manifold for printing, i followed this video and realized the model is not manifold beyond repair, what should i do?
you again, are you speedrunning all my videos?? Either way, I appreciate it. I'm not entirely sure why it may not be working, but you can add in more geometry by pressing ctrl + R to add in edge loops, then drag them towards the edges you want to be sharp
would be good but I had no idea what you were pressing to scale, or to grab points to move around as I struggles to find how to grab a point so gave up on the video 4 minutes in. please explain what your pressing to achieve something as you do it, definitely not a beginner tutorial unless you already know you way around the software. :(
I clearly state many times, it is the 'g' key to grab vertices, or you can use your right mouse button. However I did forget to mention to press 's' to scale
@@tamicoker Thanks for the reply. I struggled to find how to scale it and when I did it didn't scale as a rectangle as yours did but a square, so then I tried to figure out how to move the points but you hadn't explained that by that time in the video so couldn't really carry on, which is why it left me confused and a bit frustrated.
@@_vakas Apologies, completely forgot about that. ALT + R clears rotation, this is a default hotkey in blender. If it isn't working, you may have already cleared the rotation, or applied a new rotation by pressing CRTL + A then rotation
Part 2 is out - ua-cam.com/video/fJORYXa7mpk/v-deo.html& for adding materials to you helmet
Well I'm new to 3D modeling and I almost give up, but then I found this video. One of the best tutorials out there. Subscribed!

I appreciate the honest tutorial, admitting there might be better ways but working with what you know and improving. Great job

Increase the thickness of the solidify modifer
