    I'm 56 years old and just getting my driver's licence! I start my first in car lesson this Sunday and I'm beyond nervous!! I've been watching your videos all week and want to thank you so much for having these available on line.

      Hi Dorothy.A - thank your for comment & compliment. And congratulations on doing some homework before getting into the vehicle. Be sure that you start your first lesson in a parking lot or other closed circuit area and just work on controlling the primary controls of the vehicle. Be sure you're comfortable with the primary controls before moving out to a residential are with low traffic. And keep in mind that because you're starting later, it's may take you a few more lessons. If you have further questions, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

      I will be learning with an instructor so I will ask them to take me to a parking lot. I will let you know how things go as I progress. I live in Toronto and the traffic here is insane! I wanted an early morning session (like around 8 am) but I could only get 11 am so starting out in a parking lot would be better for me and for my instructor 's sanity! I plan on retiring to a small rural town when I turn 60 and so learning how to drive has become a necessity.

      Hi Dorothy.A - thank you for your comment. I'm originally from London, ON, and I drove truck there in Toronto in the 1990s. You're right - the traffic there is dense. Don't worry too much about the instructor; the good one's are able to provide a comfortable learning environment for student and move them along at a pace that facilitates learning. The first lesson is often an "assessment for learning", which determines the student's skill level and then the instructor tailors to driving lessons to the student's ability. And yes, driving in a rural Ontario town is a bit of a must - not much local transit out there. All the best, Cheers Rick

      Hey. I passed my road test last week and I'm 57. Rick's videos help a lot. Time behind the wheel is the best thing. One of my driving instructors is a former tester so I got some good back stories on the testers. Best advice he gave was to smile as you go through difficult turns or situations. It relaxs you. Good luck.

    I've been driving for over 30 years now and I still talk myself through situations. Not so much about the control actions I'm taking or the observations I'm making (that's just muscle memory at this point), but analysing traffic situations and prioritizing potential dangers. It really helps to verbalize things as it keeps your attention where it should be, in a way almost no other method can.

      Been driving almost 20 years myself and I do the same...... I'm mostly verbalizing hazards on the road such as merging traffic, passing traffic, stalled traffic in the shoulder as well as possible hidden traffic that I may not see...... But I also do it while backing my trailer to keep me focused on what the trailer is doing and exactly what I need to do to get the trailer to do what I need it to do

  • @sinneadfert
    @sinneadfert 3 місяці тому

    Trainers for school bus drivers here taught us to do this. I found it very effective if I have to drive when really stressed out. It helps me focus on the road instead of what otherwise would be going on in my head.

    Yes, running commentary helps a whole lot. My students sometimes do the same thing and apologize too. I tell them that it's okay. Some of them are too shy and don't talk much. Most of the time I'll ask them if they have any questions. Keep it up Rick! Awesome!

    This is exactly what I did during my road test last week and I passed on my first attempt! I was having a road test in a downpour so I literally had a hard time seeing and the best I could do was to show my intention to the examiner by verbalizing what I was doing and why. I believe this helped me to pass because I had room for demonstrating my knowledge of the driving theory and my humble attempt to adjust my skills to the situation:) Good luck to all who are about to pass their road test-passing it is literally one of the best feelings in the world:D

    Hi, Rick, just come across your videos today. I have a bad day. I just canceled the road test the next day after 4 lessons from the coach coz I feel myself not fully prepared and there's fat chance I could pass. So I feel really down and don't have the confidence. I don't respond well before traffic lights, expecially right/left turns, not quick enough and forget the shoulder check. At the same time, I feel regreted not taking the chance to get the first try in the test and get feedbacks from the examiner even failing.

    • @gabrielle9958
      @gabrielle9958 11 місяців тому

      I did the same thing. But I had about 5 lessons. I feel if you know you are not ready, why waste the effort and face the frustration not of not passing, Instead, practice the things you are not confident in, then take the test.

    I used this technique in both my car driving test and my cdl driving test. I honestly don't know if I would have passed the car test without it because everytime I did something wrong, I immediately said what I should have done instead, without the test person asking. Back then I just thought it was my nervousness making me talk too much Lol.

    This is kind of an old video and I just saw it now. It’s funny because I do this all the time! My husband is always making fun of me... I especially use it for space management and how to adjust my speed when turning. I must talk in order to have the correct speed and most importantly my foot off the clutch before the turn. Also very helpful when I am merging and exiting the highway. The other day I gave a Colleague a ride and she laughed really hard on my monologue. I didn’t know this was actually a technique recommended by instructors, hahaha.

    I am honestly scared to do this.... I'm 33 and live in NYC, failed multiple times a lot of issues with getting blamed for my response to other drivers on the road who are reckless. My confidence is shot and I feel like the road test instructors are evil. So they may tell me to stop talking.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  Рік тому

      "I CAN DO THIS!" That's your new mantra my friend. Don't let someone else's opinion of you become your reality. Driving is a tough skill. And the other part about traffic is we're duped to think it's easy because a lot of other people do it. Whether they do it well or not is open to a matter of interpretation. You just need to pass your driver's test. Any driving instructor or examiner is going to feel better with a student talking his way through the driving. When a student is talking about what they're doing when driving, the instructor or examiner knows what you're thinking, what you're looking at, and what action you're going to take. It's not a guessing game anymore. Talk through your driving my friend and you'll be a better driver. Drop us a note if we can help further. All the best, Cheers Rick

      Hi Healing365 - thank you for your comment. And I'm sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempts. And yes, I completely disagree with manipulating the steering wheel back to the centre position - that technique is left over from the 1960s when many vehicles didn't have power steering. Anyway, if you're not already taking driving lessons, I would encourage you to hire a local driving instructor and go out for a mock road test in the days before your actual driving test. That way he or she will be able to point out the driving skills that need improvement. As well, a local driving instructor will be able to show you the specific nuances for a driving test in your area. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help out. Hi Rick I worry that if I do running commentary on my road test that the examiner (I am in BC) may tell me to stop doing it. I was too nervous to take my test last December so I cancelled it, I can drive and my instructor has said as much I just get so nervous about the test itself.

      Hi Traveling Photographer - Apologies - I posted this on the wrong smart driver. Thank you for your concern - breath my friend...just breath. You're going to do awesome. If you're doing running commentary, the examiner doesn't have to guess what you're doing, and it will help to calm your nerves. Good luck on your road test! Be sure to let us know how it goes. All the best, Cheers Rick

      Hi Kalishankar Das - thank you for your comment. Yes indeed, it is different driving in India - where are you in India? For aggression on other drivers, have a look at this video: ua-cam.com/video/HABPPIUhIIE/v-deo.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
