One thing that a teacher told me to help stay centered is to keep your right leg aligned with the center of the lane as it is almost the middle of the car. It really helped me.

Thanks for your videos. I've been watching to help with my driving anxiety- sometimes just thinking about driving sends me into a panic attack. These videos are helping me become more comfortable with concepts. I'm in Ontario and my G1 expires this Summer. I'm thinking of using the time to get comfortable with driving.
Hi DB Cooper - Thank you for your comment. And you got this; you can do this driving thing. This is a confidence boost. I love the practicality of your tip. Aim as high as possible with your vision. Great. Hopefully I'll pass my test in Qatar. Thanks
I just drove today and my dad said I was too close to the curb. Thank you for this tip! I would always just look down the hood and never look far enough to see future hazards. The next time I drive I will definitely look further and have landmarks when turning.
Hi DragMac - thanks for your comment. Yes, centring the vehicle in the lane can be a challenge at the beginning. Looking farther down the road should clear up your challenge. If there's anything further we can do, drop us a note. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Rick! I recently moved from NYC to Phoenix and I am finally learning to drive. I have been watching your videos for 2 weeks now and they really help with the fine details that maybe a friend wouldn't think to show you. Your tips have been awesome, and so helpful. I will report back with the results of my road test on Friday! Thanks again.

Staying in the center of my lane is one my challenges with driving a big truck. I find it's like driving a tank. I'm gong to take your advice and look farther ahead. Your videos are the best thing on the internet. Thanks so much for making them available.
Hi Darlene - Thank you for your comment. Yes, it can be a bit daunting initially; however, if you look farther down the road, the truck will centre in the lane. And look through the curve - the truck will go where you're looking. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I am going to use this tip. I am just starting to learn how to drive and I suck at keeping the vehicle in the centre. I'm always either too close to one side.

Thanks for the tip. I started driving again lately and drifting in between lanes is one of my biggest shortcomings. I'll try to look farther down the road the next time I get behind the wheel and go on the highway.
Hi! I have been watching all your videos while I was practicing my driving. I am so happy l passed my behind the wheel driving test this morning. Yayy! Thank you for posting all the driving videos!

I am a new driver and just started learning how to drive. I have a problem too with staying in my lane as I tend to drift a little bit into the other lane. Will definitely use your tips when I go for my driving lesson tomorrow.
Staying in the center of the lane is one of my biggest challenges currently (I started driving a month ago) and especially staying in the lane when turning or going around small curves. I guess I have been getting better, and probably it takes a lot of practice. This video has helped quite a bit and I have definitely been binge watching this video. Thanks and your videos are very helpful!
Hi Noname121416 - Thank you for your comment. You're doing awesome my friend. The exercises in this video will help improve your overall driving: ua-cam.com/video/dJpMKkwEhxI/v-deo.html All the best, Cheers Rick
Your tips are highly valuable. I was driving for 15 years in Pakistan and i need renew driving license in Netherland. This is just opposite hand. Unfortunately my driving instructor is so rude by just very small mistake he become so angry start talking loose that I loose confidence on the road. Unfortunately I have paid full and has booked my test. Thanks God I found your channel.
I love this video so much. It really does feel like am the one driving and am actually making decisions while "driving" through this video like am making sure to "look" at mirrors and stuff
Positioning the car is a major problem for all the new driver, amazing video I learn a lot from it , It will be innovation (no video so far regarding this subject in UA-cam) and high interesting lesson if you don’t mind broadcasting a video to determine the limit of the vehicle, so when parking or moving in crowd we do not hurt the others vehicles .your videos are so benefit for me. Thanks a lot.
Hi hichem ben jazia - Thank you for your comment and praise. Be sure to have a look at the image that shows you the blind spots around the vehicle - that areas where you can't see from the driver's seat. And I believe this video will help you with learning the orientation of the vehicle in space and place. Do the 2 X 4 (wood) exercise to learn how to position your vehicle: ua-cam.com/video/dJpMKkwEhxI/v-deo.html All the best, Cheers Rick
I am preparing to take my driving test in January and one of my biggest problems is staying centered in the lane. This video helped me a lot, I can't wait to put what I learned to use.

Thank you, my biggest issues when driving is staying in my lane and turning to far out. I always look just straight down in front of the hood. I will definitely try this next time I drive😌

+Smart Drive Test is there is a way you can more in depth of the right away at a four way stop sign. i watch your video. about it and it was kinda helpful. but alittle confusing. Thank you for all your videos
Hi crosby ayana - let's try simple first: 1) first person to arrive 2) if you're not sure, give the right of way to the person on the right. All the of the other rules of stop signs apply: ua-cam.com/video/dO6rI2no350/v-deo.html All the best, Cheers Rick

I also tell my students they can use the vehicle ahead of them as a rough guide assuming there is a vehicle ahead of them and that car is centered in the lane and I have heard that state troopers use their left thumb - by holding the wheel at 10 and 2 and sticking their thumb up it should appear to be riding along the yellow center line or just slightly to the right of it but that takes some practice and accuracy.
Hi G Pospiel - Thank you for your comment, and great information. Happy instructing my friend. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
you're videos are great! it's awesome that you cover much more than basic shifting and braking technique. even an experienced driver could learn something from these informative pieces. is your doctorate in engineering or is it something specific to commercial trucks? your credentials and driving experience give you much more credibility than other channels and even some driving instructors lol! keep up the good work.
Hi Clifford Walters - thank you for your most flattering comment and compliment. My PhD is in the discipline of legal history, which is the study of courts, prisons, and policing. My PhD look at policing and traffic safety and how it relates to traffic. In a nutshell: The thesis examined the traffic revolution that occurred in the forty years after 1890 as road traffic transitioned from animal-drawn to motor-vehicles. Melbourne, Australia served as a case study. The focus of the work examined the 500% increase in average road speeds and the consequent impact on law, policing, and public policy. In the conflict that ensued between motorists’ desire to travel at higher road speeds and authorities’ mandate to maintain an acceptable level of public safety and public order, the analysis concluded that new policies and legislation, in fact, facilitated higher road speeds. Hi ...thanks for ur tips and advise..ur videos are very informative and useful.pls do u have a driving school? Also I'm using a Toyota Corolla for my driving class but after 2 hrs driving test,i usually feel pain on my right kneel despite moving back d car seat to d last point behind. Im concern cuz I'm just 5ft 9 inches tall, cud it be i needed more leg room space or what? What kind of car will u advice to use personally.
Hi Oluwakayode Fasusi - Thank you for your comment. And a Corolla is a good car. Are you taking a 2hr driving lesson with a driving instructor? 2 hours is a long time; I usually don't work with students for that long in a passenger vehicle. 50 minutes or 1 hour is more the norm. You might try some of the small SUVs and see if they work better for you - Honda CRV, or the Toyota RAV 4!? If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Hey Rick, thank you so much for all your videos, they have been very helpful to me as a learner Driver. I was wondering if you could please do a video on how to make my passengers in the car more comfortable such that they don't feel as though the car is jerking or stalling? I've had a comment from one of my driving instructors that the ride is not as smooth when they're sitting in my car (especially when I'm going through roundabouts) compared to more experienced drivers. Is there a way around that? Also, how do I know how wide to turn when I'm making a left turn and/or right turn?
Hi RAISING TWINS ! - thank you for your comment and compliment. We're glad to hear the videos are helping with your driving. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi, If I was taking a drivers test and if I was having trouble staying in the lane Would I get point(s) off? Also, would I get points off if I drive too close to the curb?
Hi Kasinova Da Don - thanks for your query. I'm going to be frank - it is unlikely that you would even pass a road test if you can't centre the vehicle in the lane. Not being able to centre the vehicle in the lane is a telltale sign that the student has spent very little time practicing and fails to grasp the fundamentals of driving. If you have further questions, drop us a note - always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
@8:04, Why did you stop for the unoccupied crosswalk? Yes, you must yield and stop for road users already in the roadway... but there were none. Could this be a potential demerit on a road test... Stopping/slowing unnecessarily (C4)?

Hey love your vids man, but can you do a video on a three or multi lane highway? Never been on one and just want to know the difference between a regular two lane high way and a three or multi lane high way thank you!
Hi Mohamed Mangassouba - thank you for your comment. Can you tell me where in the world you are - that will give me a starting point? What is the information that you are looking for because multi-lane highways are easier to drive on than 2-lane highways with opposing lanes of traffic. The only difference is that you will have to lane merge: ua-cam.com/video/mv5kwg7fp_Y/v-deo.html and: ua-cam.com/video/mUnfbiEJytA/v-deo.html and: ua-cam.com/video/ANSdyiNz3T8/v-deo.html If there's anything else we can do, drop us a note. It's like a 4 way junction controlled by traffic signal and allowed to do u turn , also T junction controlled by traffic signal and allowed to take u turn The problem is it's not like other u turn traffic board signal allows in the middle of the road, in this u can stop my car and look for clearance on opposite road then I can take U turn by turning the steering wheel on my left completely. It's easy for me to do I am having problems when the signal is green on the U turn so I can't stop my car to look for clearance , I have to steer U turn while I am driving, during this either I am over steer or less steer also I am not controlled in acceleration and brakes and I am not sure how much I have to steer So could you please explain on this

Hey, just found your channel and this video really helped me. This is one thing that I've had problems with for quite a while. I'm always too close to the lines so it's hard for me to stay in the center of the lane. But this really helped! I'm going to get my truck license in a year or so, but I still need to get my driver's license. By the way, is that a 2001 Honda CR-V? What is it like to drive?
Hi Eaze - thank you for your comment. We're glad that the video helped you out. We'll be here when you're ready to get your truck license. And we're working on some ebooks that will help you out when you're ready to get your commercial license. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. It's a 1998 CRV; and I've owned a 1999 too. They're great vehicles for a small SUV and reliable. All the best, Cheers Rick
Will the fog line always be on the right corner regardless of width i practicing to drive in my fiesta and will be taking my test in a couple days i feel and know that im all over the lane im straight but i find myself always veering off to one side
At 4:18, how did you decide if you should turn left or yield for oncoming cars? I see a protected left turn arrow there, so maybe that was it. But, do you have a protected left turn arrow? How would you know to turn left in case of an advanced green?
Hello thanks for the useful information. Could you please explain to me? do I have to put a small paper in the middle of front mirror in order to center the car in the lane? Is that what you mean by setting a landmark? Thank you, Hiba
Hi Hiba Hammami - thank you for your comment. No, you don't need a piece of paper. Some of the smart drivers said that it's easier to find the centre of the hood in the camera, thus the piece of paper. The landmark is a fixed object in the roadway that will allow you to drive you vehicle; it is a guide that allows you to point your vehicle where you need it to go. Have a look at this video - this might explain the landmark better: ua-cam.com/video/6WbYpgn6T4c/v-deo.html If we can help further, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Thank you for the video. It did help me to stay in the center of my lane when the lanes are marked. I do have huge problem with positioning myself when I am on a residential two-way street with 2 lanes in each direction and there are no lines either separating the lanes in the same direction nor the yellow line that would mark the lane with opposite traffic.(no marked lanes on intersections either). What can I do to help me with my spatial awareness and knowing when I am in which lane? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
This helped a bit, but my issue is that I find it difficult to stay centered while I'm not sitting in the center of my car, if that makes sense. Any tips with that?
Hi Prabu Prasad - thank you for your comment. I'll put you're request on the list and get that video done for you. Could you give me an example of a signal junction - perhaps you could send me the location of an intersection that I could look up on Google Maps. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test The example junction are like 4 ways junction and T junction controlled by signal lights and allowed to do U turn I am not finding difficult while taking U turn in middle of the road which is controlled by sign board because that location I will stop , look for clearance and steer to left full and I turn I am finding difficult in U turn controlled by traffic signal lights, where I can't stop and do the U turn , I have to make U turn while driving . While doing this either I am taking over turn or short turn , it's purely because of steering control and also acceleration control , could you please explain how much I have steer and how to accelerate for taking U turn which is controlled by traffic signal lights
Hi Prabu Prasad - thanks for your response. For better steering wheel and throttle control I suggest this video: ua-cam.com/video/dJpMKkwEhxI/v-deo.html Let me know if it helps. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

Thanks so much. I'm at 25 and just now learning lol my bad eyes always made me scared but I have great glasses that help a lot now. And now I know not to look at the lane lines 😂 look at the landmarks and the curvature of the road and other cars 😂
Hi Kiara - Thank you for your comment. And you are most welcome. Yes, and look farther down the road will help too. You're going to do awesome. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Thanks for the video. How do you stay in your lane when driving around curves or hills? I tried driving a truck, but I kept moving off to the side of the road.
Hi cedric - thank you for your comment and query. "Top side driver, top side!" 😀 Always stay to the top side of the curve or bend. If you're turning left, stay to the right, if you're turning right, stay to the left. That way, if you start driving bigger vehicles, you won't cause the back end of the vehicle to drop in the other lane. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Mr. Profit74 - thanks for your cooperation and participation in last night’s live event. I don’t have that video, but I suggest you look farther down the road as the vehicle will go where you’re looking. Also, the video “how to centre your vehicle in the lane” may have some relevant information. If there’s anything further we can do drop us a note. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi, I have a question. Sometimes the car on the nearby lanes gets close to me or drives sort of in-between lanes. What to do in that case, if it happens out of the blue and if there is traffic on all lanes that I can't change lanes in that situation?
How can you keep centered if you are sitting at the left side of the car? unless the steering wheel is in the center of the car where you can really see the center of the road. That is weird to me.
Hi Norma Chavez - Thank you for your comment and query. Follow the tips in the video and you can centre the vehicle in the lane. And these tips and techniques work for both driving on the right and left side of the vehicle. The skills and techniques also work for larger vehicles too. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Normita I guess if you look forward as far as you can do on the road , it will be straight. Your position doesn't matter in the car because point of the road that you looked is longer than your position from the car's center
I'm looking at the outer edges of the road. Also, the fog line on the right side of the vehicle should be in the centre of the hood - but don't rely on that. That technique is just a quick reference. Also, look at the trees on the outside of the road - those show you which direction the road is going to curve. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Scarlet Keller - thank you for your comment and compliment. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
+nicky ahmad sorry for late response. The fog line should be on the left front corner of the vehicle; although that’s just a general guideline. Looking farther down the road is the best way to centre the vehicle in the lane. If there’s anything further we can do drop us a note. All the best, Cheers Rick

Rick, you said something about an L on the back of the car. Is that something that's done in B.C.? I'm in Ontario and I don't recall anything like that with the licensing system here.
Hi esoRdeR - In many places G1 drivers have to display the L, and G2 drivers have to display the N on their vehicle, but I can't find anything about that in Ontario. I would just give a driving school a quick call or the MTO office - they'll be able to confirm that information quickly. If there's anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Is it a law to drive in the center of the lane? I drive on a highway where there are huge potholes doing such. 1 mile of potholes about where the left wheels would travel over. During that stretch of highway, I get close to the right white line to avoid the holes. Many times, I wonder if by trying to prevent damage to my suspension system, is doing such against the law?
Hi Romulan112 - Thank you for your question. Nope - not law my friend. If you're avoiding potholes, it's better so long as you don't go out of your lane. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

One thing that a teacher told me to help stay centered is to keep your right leg aligned with the center of the lane as it is almost the middle of the car. It really helped me.

@Smart Drive Test I passed thanks to you only thing you have to do is drive and make the examiner not have a reason to fail you
Thanks for your videos.
My Uncle said the same thing yesterday. This video was a big help!

I tell my student drivers to look ahead & keep close to the line/lines on the left - just don't drive on it!

Thank you, my biggest issues when driving is staying in my lane and turning to far out. I always look just straight down in front of the hood. I will definitely try this next time I drive😌
I just got home. I got my drivers test. Thanks for your points.

In a nutshell:
The thesis examined the traffic revolution that occurred in the forty years after 1890 as road traffic transitioned from animal-drawn to motor-vehicles.

All the best, Cheers Rick
Also, how do I know how wide to turn when I'm making a left turn and/or right turn?
love that you do these videos will be going for my road test soon really enjoying all your tips and advice thank you :)

All of your videos are very, extremely helpful!! Thank you Dr. August! ;)

It's like a 4 way junction controlled by traffic signal and allowed to do u turn , also T junction controlled by traffic signal and allowed to take u turn
The problem is it's not like other u turn traffic board signal allows in the middle of the road, in this u can stop my car and look for clearance on opposite road then I can take U turn by turning the steering wheel on my left completely. It's easy for me to do
I am having problems when the signal is green on the U turn so I can't stop my car to look for clearance , I have to steer U turn while I am driving, during this either I am over steer or less steer also I am not controlled in acceleration and brakes and I am not sure how much I have to steer
So could you please explain on this

I've been watching all of your videos since Friday.. waiting for my permit to come in the Mail..and ready to take my road test..you helped A LOT..willing to take this knowledge to my test. I'm from New York NY btw. love your vids man. you're Awesome 🤘
Hi Alexandre Kenny - thanks for your comment & praise. New York, NY is awesome - I drove 18-wheelers down Broadway in the 1990s and into lower Manhattan. You are going to do great on your test. If there's anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
hi smart drive test. So since we sit in the left side of the car, does that mean we drive to the left of the road?
Hi Andrew Wan - thank you for your excellent query. Nope - we driving in the centre of the lane, which is why--as you pointed out--this can be challenging for new drivers. Thanks again, all the best, Cheers Rick
Your lane is to the right always. That’s your default position. It’s called right hand driving.
Great video,am gonna practice that. Thanks alot Smart Drive Test
Hi Ssaka D.Neriah Katende - Thank you for your comment. And happy to hear you're going to practice keeping your vehicle centred in the lane - excellent. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Rick, would you show the right turning position beside bicycle line ? .....
Hi Noni Halim - Thank you for your comment. I can work on that for you. I'll work to get that up up in the next couple of days. If there is anything further we can do in the interim, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Imagine there is a line so it fits how many cars can fit in that particular lane
This helped a bit, but my issue is that I find it difficult to stay centered while I'm not sitting in the center of my car, if that makes sense. Any tips with that?
Can you please explain about how make U turn in main roads and signal junction
Hi Prabu Prasad - thank you for your comment. I'll put you're request on the list and get that video done for you. Could you give me an example of a signal junction - perhaps you could send me the location of an intersection that I could look up on Google Maps. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test
The example junction are like 4 ways junction and T junction controlled by signal lights and allowed to do U turn
I am not finding difficult while taking U turn in middle of the road which is controlled by sign board because that location I will stop , look for clearance and steer to left full and I turn
I am finding difficult in U turn controlled by traffic signal lights, where I can't stop and do the U turn , I have to make U turn while driving .
This guy is letting you none drivers know how to do it the right way 💯
Not saying it In a bad way he's helping and believe you'll pass I did my first try
Hi #DatWhatItDew_RealWorld - you are most welcome my friend. Nope, we saw the comment as positive. Thank you for your kind words. Drop us a note if we can help further my friend.
Do you have videos on driving thru narrow construction lanes with jersey barriers with tractor trailer
All the best, Cheers Rick
thank you so much!

Hi,
I have a question.
Is this for New Jersey driving?
Yes it is my friend. Drop us a note if you have further questions. Cheers Rick
Where were you looking at while on that steep down the hill? I'm kinda confused....sorry
What's the time on the video? I want to be sure that we're talking about the same point. Thanks, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest 6:30 onwards
I'm looking at the outer edges of the road. Also, the fog line on the right side of the vehicle should be in the centre of the hood - but don't rely on that. That technique is just a quick reference. Also, look at the trees on the outside of the road - those show you which direction the road is going to curve. All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest thanks
Thank you for this video it was a tremendous help
Hi Scarlet Keller - thank you for your comment and compliment. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Can you tell me what should be my reference point to keep half feet distance with left line from driving seat.
+nicky ahmad sorry for late response. The fog line should be on the left front corner of the vehicle; although that’s just a general guideline. Looking farther down the road is the best way to centre the vehicle in the lane. If there’s anything further we can do drop us a note. All the best, Cheers Rick
best video to learn how to remain in centre of lane
Thnks for adding video😊

At 1:37 there's an object on the hood or dash marking the center of the vehicle. What is it?
Hi Lawton C - Thank you for your query. It's nothing more sexy than a piece of paper taped to the hood my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
Thanks a lot for sharing

Rick, you said something about an L on the back of the car. Is that something that's done in B.C.? I'm in Ontario and I don't recall anything like that with the licensing system here.
Hi esoRdeR - In many places G1 drivers have to display the L, and G2 drivers have to display the N on their vehicle, but I can't find anything about that in Ontario. I would just give a driving school a quick call or the MTO office - they'll be able to confirm that information quickly. If there's anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test Thanks, Rick. :) I'll call around to find out about it.
