      @gene9230 2 роки тому +50

      It is fiction. There is some inspiration from the grandfather of the director, which survived the war and later served in the German army. They also had several advisors which were at Napolas.

    • @mediocremaiden8883
      @mediocremaiden8883 Рік тому

      I think it's Fiction..However, it was a World War I'm sure that those being persecuted did everything to survive, even using fake papers and joining Hitler Youth...I read an article years ago about a Surgeon, who was really fascinated by plastic surgery (which was practically...non existent then) and I swear swear swear it was true he secretly helped the Jews (His Father was Half-Jewish so they sterilized him but allowed him to live) anyhow he secretly spent days and nights about 18 months surgically 'creating' these...Things...to make circumcised Jews with fake papers look circumsized..It was in Austria, he started practicing after the Anschluss knowing what would happen, trying to prepare for the worst and he was right. He survived the war but he died in the early 50s damn I wish I could remember his name. Um so my point is this particular story is Fiction but I wouldn't be surprised if parts of it were true and happened by those with Fake papers, but not just everything to 1 person like the movie.

    They made sure to have everything written in old grammar. It's one of these random details that i love to look out for in movies. See, german had a spelling reform in the 1990s and 2000s (Yes, those CAN work), but obviously, in those times, people didn't write like that.

      It's the old counting system. 8th grade in this case means that he's 17 - 18 years old. My country still uses this system.

      The boys are being brainwashed in the school, apart from Nazi propaganda, they are taught to be merciless and cruel when needed. They lure them with ideas of success and higher status. It works well on the main character - Friedrich as he is just a simple boy from a simple background.
      Albrecht is smart and large minded. He knows what is right and what is evil, no brainwashing works on him. The boys influence each other, but Albrecht is the link that prevents Friedrich from completely slipping away from what is right in the end.
      Albrecht feels his parents reject him, he is not the kind of son they wanted, the father see his fairness as weakness, which he mocks. Realising he is a disappointment for his parents, and at the same time seeing what he is becoming a part off (shooting young "POW"), he chooses to give up on his life, rather than becoming a part of Nazi evil system, or becoming a shame for his parents.
      Friedrich is broken by his friends suicide, but it also reinforces the influence Albrecht had on him. He carries on Albrechts legacy, refusing being merciless or cruel. (first box match vs second one).
      It leads to him being expelled from the school. But all those young boys were used in the final German defence fights and were mostly killed.
      So Albrecht not only saved Friedrich from becoming the kind of soldier, Nazis wanted to create, but also probably saved his life.
