Great to have you on board Brandon, keep your eye out this season for some "How i became a shark scientist" videos, they might be right up your street!
I know this is an old video and you probably won’t see this but I thought I’d share this memory in honor of my late father. When I was a kid my grandma would take us on holiday to Cayucos/Morrow bay Ca. One year they rented my nephew and I wet suits and boogie boards. We were out playing in the ocean while the adults were on the patio of our beach front hotel when I seen a fin in the water. I freaked out and yelled to my nephew to get out of the water and that there was a shark. So he and I swim to shore as fast as we could and when we get there we sat and look. All of the sudden there were dozens of fins. I think we were in shock cuz we just stood there in awe of the fact we were just in the water to where we couldn’t touch the bottom… after a minute or so we snap out of it and run screaming back to the adults. Unbeknownst to me my mom and dad were actually paying attention and watching us and had seen what was happening before I did. My mom has told me since then that she had seen them and freaked out and said something like “oh him there’s sharks in the water we need to get the kids” and my dad just laughed and said “those aren’t sharks they are dolphins” of coarse my mom was skeptical like how do you know and then he said that exact thing of sharks fins are straight and dolphins fins are curved. I’ll never forget that and I’ll never forget how awesome he truly was. This has been the hardest year of my life and I know this next one is gonna be the same so thank you for letting me share and honor his memory.
This reminds me of when I’d go to the beach with my family. My late father would always wake up early and watch the dolphins while standing in the balcony. Sometimes he would go down in the morning to watch them because there were always a lot of them. I always asked him how he was able to tell they were dolphins and not sharks, and he would always say he could just tell, which I’m guessing is because of the fins.
@@SHARKBYTES Proving shark scientists wrong is sharks' national sport 😄 It always seems to be the way, though, doesn't it? The second anyone says something doesn't happen...it happens. Murphy's Law strikes again.
A juvenile hammerhead, about the same size as this one, was what started my fascination with sharks. Found one on Galveston Beach when I was 6. I tried to pick it up, but my folks wouldn't let me. Kids have no fear!
In fairness to you, that thing was adorable, and I totally get why a kid would be tempted to pick it up. Better that you didn't, but I mean, look how cute! If I was a child with no sense of danger or responsibility, I would definitely want to keep it as a pet.
Great selection Kristian. Isn't it the Mako the most likely, capable, of leaping onto my boat ? If that specimen agrees, "Beam me up Scottie !" Any Aussie swimming around in 'un-netted' waters, surely playing Russian Roulette ! 😁
That's a dolphin fin. The angle sucks, but you can still tell that it's curved, and rounder than a shark's fin. The dolphin also looks like it's starting to dive downwards, too. With the fin like that, you would probably see the tail fin if it was a shark.
I selfishly hope that you'll eventually do an entire film review of Shark Lake! That said, my favorite clip here was of that massively thick mako. Whether she was very pregnant or had just enjoyed a huge meal, that was a rare sight to behold.
Even a really big mako is usually much more slender than a white, and if the teeth are visible they are very distinct. Whites have broad, triangular teeth shaped for cutting, and makos have teeth like long, thin spikes shaped more for pinning fish in the mouth so they get impaled if they try to break free. Still, I really thought the one in the video was a white
Great question Steph, Jawsbert below has given a pretty good synopsis - the teeth is a big giveaway, but also the shape of the snout too, Mako's have a very pointed snout, more so than a white. I suppose in the clip it doesnt help that its a little blurry!
No way. The great hammerhead has a very (very) tall triangular (not curved) fin. This fin was relatively small, slightly curved and in the surf zone where dolphins sometimes frequent.
person from south Australia here if that surfer photo was around farmers bay which nobody goes surfing there its probably a shark if not defiantly a dolphin
I'm going to say dolphin. Not only can I make out a curve, but I feel that if it were a shark we would see the top of the vertical tail fin too at that point. With a dolphin, since their tail fins are horizontal and their tails are flexible up and down, it's easier for it to not be in the photo.
It was first seen in 1976 after being pulled up on an anchor. Since then, less than 100 specimens of the shark have been seen or collected. Its mouth has light reflective tissue, the purpose of which is currently unknown.
Wether you done a follow up video or not just seeing this and I'd say Hayden Richards pic is of Dolphin at 1st I thought maybe young Orca till you said Dolphin, for me it's too fat for it's size for it to be a shark, I'm 42 been fascinated by sharks since childhood

I’m leaning towards a shark. Only reason is I don’t see a bend in the dorsal fin. If there is one is ever so slight but as you said the angle as well as the way the light bounces off the waves. I believe most of us here know that light infraction can play tricks. Either way shark or dolphin I don’t want to swim with either lol.
Dolphins are more likely to be in the surf zone, they actually ride waves, sharks don't. There is an obvious curvature in the fin which says "dolphin". Lots of clues. Mako sharks have a more blue upper body and silvery sides without a definite line of demarcation (dramatic line where the dark top and white bottom meet). Whites have a very jagged and sharp line between the upper and lower coloration, often used as a way of identifying individual animals (a fingerprint so to speak). Very pointed nose. A mako has a very sharply pointed nose where a white has a more curved, slightly rounded nose. Dorsal fin is made of very straight lines, sharply triangular. Great whites have a dorsal that is gently curved on the leading edge (front) and usually fairly straight along the rear edge. More predominantly blue in color instead of gray. Extremely straight and tall gill slits. Whites have slightly curved and sometimes jagged gill slits. Also realize they are very closely related so it is understandable to confuse them. I honestly think mako sharks and the closely related porbeagle shark look more like each other than white sharks.
