Talk about perfect timing. I finally gave up trying to find tank raised altums. I just ordered 4in. Wilds. (Orinoco). I probably wouldn't have done it but they are from jack whatleys operation. No middle man and getting overnight delivery. Gabe does acclimate to most U.S. tap water. Love your video's and your aquarium. Great info. Thank you.👍👋
Gabe usually has great quality wilds (judging by his videos) and seems to do a great job acclimating them. Hope you'll like them. I know its hard to get captive bred altums, here in UK we get them from Germany and only about once per year
Mark, I bought 10 from Gabe. I’ve had mine for about 6 wks now. Lost 2. They came in rough and I had a rocky 2 weeks with them but was very lucky with the rest. They’ve doubled in size. Unfortunately they “spook” so easily. They’re used to me but if someone else comes in to see them....poof! they’re gone! They’re currently quarantined in a 55 gallon. I have a 180 that needs to be set up for them. Nice tall tank. Very excited to get that up and running. Good luck with yours.
@@Rlk-l9x oh wow, i really appreciate the information. I'm sitting here waiting right now for them. I know their a risky situation and i really wanted some F1s for that reason. @@markhaunert5029 no problem. I'd found Shoreline Aquatics that breeds them and I was on the waiting list. I got impatient and ordered from Gabe because they were in and Shoreline's weren't ready. Mine were small and had 5 in each bag. They were very stressed but ate right away. I've had no problems with them eating. I put them with other fish to help with that. I started out with live and frozen brine. Then decided they needed more protein so ordered mysis shrimp (freeze dried) on amazon. They LOVE it. I also feed them hakari pellets. I keep the temp around 83/84. Let me know how yours do please!!

Hi there, sorry to bother you but I just wanted to ask you a question… I’ve just taken on some juvenile F1 altums… about 7cms… I noticed, in your care guide, that you say that altums are much more peaceful that other angelfish strains… however, after 24 hours of settling in they are feeding voraciously and have started being very aggressive with each other… and I’m a bit surprised… they all seem to be as bad as each other tho, although one has had its anal fin split quite badly. What do you think? Cheers, Jamie.
I'm setting up a system for the Altums right now. Will use RO water. How do you prefer to drop the pH for the altums? Do you use any product for that? The pH of my tap water is certainly more than 7.0. What's the difference between Atabapo and Orinoco Altums? Thanks in advance.
My tap water is at 1 GH and 0 KH, so I don't need to acidify it. If you are using RO, you should be fine, you can just remineralize it with your tap. Alder cones and catappa leaves will also add acidity, or you could add some peat to your filter. Atabapo altums have more red on them
@@tropicalfishhub Thank you so much. I've never head of Alder cones. Thanks for the tips!! Yes, I'm going to use RO water. Tank is only a 75 gallon for now. Maybe later I could get a slightly bigger tank, like a 90 gallon, which is taller. I'll try to find nice wood for the tank and also some organic peat moss for the filter. I can get the catappa leaves here, by the beach. Thanks very much!
Hi Mate! I would like to keep altums in my aquarium. Size of it 230x70x80 cm. Can i keep 15 altums in it? Is it enought big for them? They are about 3 mounth old captive from Germany. What if i keep them in the big tank from the beginning? In that case i have to change water twice a week aswell? Or i should keep them alone in 180 liters for a while?
Your tank should be perfect for them once they grow up. Whether you can keep them there now depends on whether you have other fish in there at the moment. At this age, they need to be fed at least 3 times per day to grow fast and if other fish outcompete them for food, then its better to raise them in a smaller tank
At the beginning i would like to keep them alone with some cory, and 1 gibbiceps and when they are bigger i will add some Hemigrammus rhodostomus (100) and Carnegiella strigata (20), maybe some bleu acara.
@@norbertlevay5108 That sounds good! As soon as they are about 6 months old, there is no risk of stunting and they can be kept with lots of other fish. Gibbiceps are pooping machines though!
@@tropicalfishhub should i change water twice a week? Or enought if i change once, about 100-120liters? I know about the gibbiceps pooping capabilities, but someone has to keep the woods maintained. @@norbertlevay5108 One water change per week should be sufficient with good filtration and live plants. If you notice gibbiceps affecting bioload, it can always be replaced with a school of Otocinclus which will do the same job but more effectively.
Hi! thank you for this great video! it's very informative! Most of my altums were captive bred and they grew up in the same tank with small fish, so they would never notice them. But I guess if your altums never lived with small fish, they might try to eat them
