Priceless first hand information.Thanks for all I learned! I wish that I knew where I could purchase wild caught Altums, as well as these Rio Nanay angels. I got VERY lucky about 30 years ago and purchased 6 or 7 P. Altums. The store that I purchased them from didn't want to sell them to me because they were sickly and had visible parasites on their sides. I put them in a 55g long and in about two months they were near perfect. I was blown away by their vivid coloration and their TALL compressed (front to rear) bodies. Rich chocolate stripes and their yellows are very vivid making for an amazing natural contrast. Thanks again, what fantastic information you provided here!
Thank you! I'm glad it was useful. Altums are indeed the most majestic of angelfish. If you are in US, I know Wattley Discus are regularly importing wild caught Altums, not sure about rio nanay angels though.
Fantastic information. I've never really been into angelfish for decades. I saw a pair of Manacapuru and fell in love with them and ended up buying 6 to grow out. Then I came across Rio Nanay and really wanted some. I've seen Peruvian Altums' Wild Black Spot and Red Spot.' I assumed they were the same fish, but now I know.
I admire your knowledge of angels. After a long time I have come across a person like you who explains so well. I am an angel breeder. Please make a video on albino manacaparu angels and on albino dantums. I am sure you will make good videos.

Thank you for the video, really informative. I have a group of Rio Nanay, bought 6 pcs. F1 and got 3 breeding pairs. got lucky :) mine are not aggressive at all, they typically discuss who is boss every day but it has not hurt them at all. whenever they have eggs they get more aggressive but there seem to be an understanding that witchever pair have eggs they will rule about 50 % of the 350 liter tank. i would recomend this fish to everyone Really beautiful :)

Excellent job on the topic of rio Nanay angels. I was able to acquire six adults last fall and they are exactly as you describe. More aggressive than my Altums toward each other. They have the dorsal spot and body spots. The gold mottling in the body is also developing as they have been conditioned. They are quite small compared to my adult atabapo Altums
Thank you! They should develop into gorgeous fish, but they may not grow much. My rio Nanays topped at about 15cm high and stopped growing afterwards. They should have more and brighter gold spots as they mature

I just got one yesterday and i hope it isn't aggressive because i move my dwarf neon rainbowfish to another tank because they were ripping the angels fins like crazy the next morning it was in the curve and find shredded. I wanted it as my display fish but now I keep a look out for aggressions with other fish because if so then I'll just have to keep it solo in another tank with cory on the bottom hopefully. Thank you for the video
3:43 It seems to me that this angel fish is not a rio nanay, but a rio momon angel fish that flowed into the rio nanay river.

Wonderful article. The Rio Nanay scalar is my favorite scalar. I try to make a biotope as accurate as possible for them. Can you help me with information about this? The pictures and videos from the habitat could be of real help, thanks.

I have six Scalare and thinking about getting Altum. Do I have to get rid of the Scalare because they might breed with the Altum or are they genuinely different species and I don’t have to worry about contamination.
They will not interbreed, but scalare might be more aggressive than Altums unless they are in a big aquarium

I'm starting to plan towards a med sized S.A. community, Giunacara's, Biotodima's, Satanoperca's, Mesonauta plus mixed Characin and Catfish nothing too small or too big! I wanted a group of really pretty locality type Angels and I was leaning towards Rio Nanay's... until I saw your guide🙄 lol They sound just too anti social, Manacupura's are nice but too big for me I think! Do you have any recommendations that might work, I had heard of Guyanan Red Dragons that looked gorgeous but not seen for sale in UK! Thanks again Stuart
Thank you! This sounds like a nice community! I think these larger Cichlids (particularly Giunacara and Satanoperca) should be able to stand their ground against rio Nanays, especially in a tank over 200L. My rio Nanays harassed tetras, apistos and other Angels, including Altums and Manacapurus, but didn't bother larger Discus. Elliott at Fish Barn (you can contact them through Facebook) frequently has Guyanan Spotted Angels, but they are usually at about £50 each so I'm always hesitant to make that investment!

So the so called "True Peruvian Altum" is actually P. scalare, correct? I've seen way too many "peruvian altums" in stores throughout my life. It makes even more interesting to try to find the real deal now after watching this video. Thank you so much for the info!
Thank you! Yes, they are all P. scalare. The real Peruvian altums are rio Nanay angels and they are often available from specialist stores.

Hi, can I ask what you know about ‘Dantum’ Angels? I’m being told that they are a cross between a wild Scalare and wild Altum, but more than this I can find very little. I’ve seen ‘wild’ Dantums available but if they exist in the wild why are they not classified as a subspecies… if they are I can’t find anything listed online.
As well as I know Dantums were bred from rio Nanay angels in Asia. They certainly do not exist in the wild; fish with such colours won't survive too long in the Amazon!
Altums are geneticly closer to manacapuru angelfish. There is a masters thesisi about that

Thank you! I never had rio Momon angels, so I cannot speak from experience, but as far as I know they are are similar to rio Nanay. Its yet another Peruvian colour variety of P.scalare, and Peruvian spotted its the same as rio Nanay, just a marketing title:)

Koi angels are certainly a man-made strain, they don't exist in the wild.

This video is nice and useful. Many thanks for your introduction. I just saw some Rio Nanay pictures on Facebook, some of them have red eye rings, but most of them have yellow ones. Does pH cause the differences?
By the way , is that possible for you to introduce a very similar specie, which is called Rio Momon? Thanks so much
Thank you! Actually, it is rather unusual for rNanay angels to have red eyes. My fish had yellowish-black eyes. I doubt that pH can affect eye colour though. I was thinking to add rio Momon to this video as they seem to be very similar, but I never had them. I should collect some more info on them
