    All good tips! One of my go to ways to encourage breeding is to time water changes just before a storm, I believe the fish can feel the barometric pressure and helps trigger the spawning behavior. In fact I just used this method a few days ago and had 4 different pairs of Angels spawn at the same time. For the record I used slightly WARMER water with those water changes.

      Thank you! I have read that barometric pressure encourages Altums to breed. And one of my first Altum spawns indeed was during a stormy weather!

    I have Degan’s second published book on Discus and he completely omits the section you have quoted from your edition. In fact he states that a change in temperature, either up or down, by a couple of degrees can stimulate spawning. I used to breed and raise Discus in the 1970’s and 80’s and used to stimulate spawning with cold water changes. I think it’s also important to recognise changes to pH, TDS and temperature when we consider the differences between the dry and rainy season. For example, during the dry season pH will fall and TDS and temperature will rise the opposite being the case during the rainy season. Simulating seasonal changes in the aquarium can also be useful tip when breeding certain species of fish 🤓✌️

      Thank you! Degen talks mostly about wild discus in the book that I have, but raising temperature to over 31C also worked great with domestic strains that I had most success with. I think that decades ago tank-bred discus were much hardier than they are now; those domestic strains we have today suffer as soon as temperature goes below 30C. My Stendkers were even reluctant to feed at 27C, so they did not even consider breeding in anything below 30C.

      Yes I agree, when I was first breeding Discus in the 1970s not many aquarists were breeding them. Also I’m not a fan of the “fancy’’ strains much preferring the wild forms 🤓👍

    I made a video of my tanks, I would like to know what you think about them. Thanks for all of the info in this video, I hope to get angels and discus some day.

    thankyou.. I up'd the temperature from 81F to 84F n major water change and they just spawned today.. am trying the same on a 2nd pair, just purchased a good heater n have up'd that one.. should do the trick.. I guess eventually will have to lower the temps back? so I can repeat the process?

    Thanks again for an informative video.
    Did you manage to raise any fry from the altums?

    • @tropicalfishhub
      @tropicalfishhub  2 роки тому

      Thank you:) No, they need RO water to hatch eggs and micro foods to raise fry. I knew that even if I provide both of these things, I will still struggle to sell juveniles (as they are very specialist fish) so it wasn't worth the effort!

      @@tropicalfishhub OK. I have a big RO unit and use it for breeding my Corys. I will get me a group of altums eventually and really try to raise some fry. Cheers

    Very interesting video. This is one of the a few videos available about altum breeding. Do you know by how old will altum angels display mating or breeding behaviours?

      Thank you:) My altums started spawning when they were 10-11 months old.

    Hi, Are Altums as hard to keep as discus or are altums easier to keep? Thanks.

    • @tropicalfishhub

      To be honest, I don't think that either is difficult to keep. I had more difficulties keeping neon tetras alive than discus or altums:)
