UNHEATED Shallow South American Fish Tank
Thanks for this video, i really enjoyed it.Are these Orinoco Altums ?
thank you. yes they were
Incredible
Ceramic balls, lava rocks, and substrate rocks hold onto beneficial bacteria ☝️ All are great and never need to be replaced. They keep your fish alive
I just received a small culture recently. I split it between 2 similar sized containers, one with sponges and one with coco coir. I used a soldering iron to make holes and super glued nylon tea bag mesh over them. I’ve never done this before so I just want to see what works best for me. I placed a damp quarter of a piece of cat food in 3 days ago on mesh, there were some worms on them but the food wasn’t gone. I kind of smushed the food and spread it into a line with the worms. Going to check soon!
Thanks for your comment:) Cat/dog food work for some people, but not for me. I have relatively small cultures in small containers, so the worms never manage to eat all of these and the food ends up spoiling
Hi, I followed the video but it didn't worked well to me. The pump is now.making a noise. The seller checked it as it believes I could have lost a joint during the process but everything is in place. The rotor keeps making a noise and I don't understand what the reason could be, I'll have to clean it once again tomorrow as some dust could maybe fallen into the rotor cabinet. In the mean time if you've any idea I would be glad to get it. Thank you for your time on posting this video and eventually if you've an idea. Best regards
Mine it lose it power flow by 80% after 2 months! 😕
Thanks for your video. Is it benefits bacteria in the thank you behind you?Or the bacteria cannot spread because you have a lot of plants?
Do you have issue with jumping fish. Especially the Corys that surf the front glass.
I have pencilfish jumping out occasionally. Corys will not jump as long as there are floating plants on surface and they sense where the waterline is
I appreciate tanks like these a little more that an expensive aqauscape. Looking very good.
Sera Siporax ;-)
Cleaning the rotor is very important, finally a video covering this.
Nice instruction
I have kept tank bred 'altum' which my local supplier said were from Germany. I kept them with wild altum and there are differences in physical characteristics. I suspect a lot of these so called f1 altum could be hybrid crosses with scalares/hybrids. I much prefer real wild altum from the atabapo or inirida tributaries.
Reputable breeders will never mix altums and scalare. Besides, it is very difficult to cross-breed them as these are two different species that are genetically different. I've kept Altums and scalare in the same tank for years and they never showed any interest towards each other. I also do not see a reason in crossbreeding these two species
@@tropicalfishhub There was an article in PFK Aug 2010. I quote ...."according to expert Heiko Bleher, these fish were captive-bred by German Simon Forkel. They’re said to be a cross between a true Pterophyllum altum from the Rio Atabapo on the Colombia border and the Segrest line of "Rio Negro altums", which is P. scalare. Seen other called hybrids being sold online, but they are nothing remotely even like Altum.
Very informative thanks!
Great tips thank you
I have the same results, that they really only love blackworms and the rest they only eat when they get really hungry.
At least Eheim last!
Thank you!
I’m still impressed with how you use a small space. Great job!
Thank you, maintaining this space is quite a bit of challenge, but I got used to it:)
New subscriber here. Cool to see what you can do in a small space
Thank you:)
What about Sera Siporax. It's also a high quality biological ( cintered glass ) media available? Is this media effective for canister filters like biomaster 850?
I never had sera siporax, so I can't say anything about it
How to introduce bacteria into the tank?
What a fantastic work ! Excelent Nature oasis, Congratulations 👏👏👏
Thank you!
Thank you sir no one really told that stuff.they all show how to create it. But they are not showing that how to maintain the black water tank
its one of the best video on SUMP i find on youtube , kindly make a video on soil and substrate for aquarium
What cave size best for breeding?
I use 12cm and 14cm caves
What cave size best for breeding?
So when getting wild discus...one should opt for brown/ green discus over heckles which are more challenging to keep and maintain.
Yes, I find Heckel discus more demanding than brown, blue or green
I'm so happy i found your videos. I have been fish keeping for many years and you give great advice even for someone like me. ❤
Thank you! I'm glad you find the channel useful
IP discus is a very reputable brand discus farm in Malaysia. Here in our regional location we have dealers and sub dealers of IP discus which deals both in Tank bred and Wilds.
Thanks for creating this channel.Awesome presentation & informative.
I have kept my canister filter big rain bar on surface which continuously forms waves so i think i dont require air stones right? I have all small fish in my tanks
It's just a bucket with a pump
This is the best video I have seen explaining a freshwater sump! Well done.
Thank you:)
Nice inexpensive way to do it.
Thanks Gil!
Well, here's a useful video on how to save money and get the same results. Well done my friend. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Thank you!
do you use filter???
I like your video it provides great insight into an alternative to bio media. I will say that I never used expensive media at the start of my fish keeping journey. Back then I used sponge filters and cheap ring media. I had planted tanks and all of them had high nitrate levels, around 40ppm maybe more. I watched a video from pondguru about biohome ultimate and decided to give it a try. In less than 3weeks I had 0 nitrates. I’m not saying it’s good or bad as I understand your point on plants need ammonia. I just wanted to add to the conversation. Thanks for the video
Thanks for your comment. I'm surprised that your nitrates went from 40ppm to 0 in just 3 weeks! All that extra media does is providing more space for bacteria and considering that not all aerobic/anaerobic bacteria feed on nitrates, it is indeed unexpected. To be honest, 40ppm is a reasonable level of nitrates for a planted tank as much of it probably came from fertilizers
Would it be possible to use a sump and a canister filter but use a canister filter as a media reactor?
Hello. Sorry for posting on a 4 year old video but i must say this is my favorite tank of your youtube channel (and probably of whole of youtube). Im thinking of setting up something similar myself but im wondering about the lack of a lid. Are Altums prone to jumping out like Discus?
Thank you! I am certainly missing that tank. Altums are not particularly jumpy if there are some floating plants and you leave some moonlight lights over night. I never had them jumping. As soon as they get used to their surroundings they are usually quite chill
I love it
Toop❤ good job
I suppose the simple answer is... to urinate in your own aquarium to keep the bacteria alive. 😂
Loving to be slightly ✨✨✨
Great video, I have question, I have used matrix from old use kept in plastic jar, so if I will use it now in new tank how can I know if porous clogged from old debris? and what shall I do to open porous from dirty properly? Thanks in advance
I'd suggest you wash it thoroughly and may be rub with a brush or something to make sure its clean before you use it
Looking great, abit overplanted(under water) for my taste but that seems to be the norm. The wall looks insanely good.
Thank you:) I am occasionally trimming submersed stem plants, but they are too fast for me ...
Dont put the cultures on the floor, best up!!😎👋🏼
It is the only cooler spot in my fishroom
I generated this from CHAT gpt,,,,,, sorry but I'm extremely cautious about giving out advice i have a vague understanding of,,, i have not appreciated it when others did such things to me so i make a conscious effort to not speak out of turn.....! one mold can inhibit the growth of another. This phenomenon is known as competitive inhibition. In the natural world, molds and other fungi often compete for the same resources, such as nutrients and space. One mold can produce substances that inhibit the growth or activity of other molds, helping it gain a competitive advantage. For example, some molds produce antibiotics or antifungal compounds that specifically target other mold species. Penicillium is a well-known example; it produces penicillin, an antibiotic that inhibits the growth of certain bacteria and fungi. Similarly, in controlled environments like laboratories or homes, different molds might produce compounds that suppress the growth of other molds. This competitive interaction is a common strategy in microbial communities, allowing organisms to thrive in their ecological niches by suppressing competitors.
Looking spectacular! And your chair looks super comfy! A match made in heaven 🤗 I'd certainly be sitting there as much as possible.
Thank you:) I certainly spend plenty of time in that chair!
At the point of this video what age was your Paludarium?
8 months
@@tropicalfishhub Do you do water changes and do you have any form of fungus or mould growing within your Paludarium ? the reason I'm asking is diversity often ensures dominance can not occur, thus if you have moulds that are of healthy presence they may hinder the development of other moulds that are less healthy,,,, I put two small pieces of elder wood in my sump drip flow filter for this reason, springtails keep the fungus in check so it remains in balance,,,,! the mould has a presence in the water column but not enough of a presence to be dominant,,, this is just a theory of course but there might be something to it worth exploring....!
@@ChristopherLecky I stopped doing water changes about a month ago, just topping up evaporation. All looks good so far when it comes to parameters. Interesting idea on fungus, etc. Much of my above-the-water area is actually far too wet to grow any terrestrial fungi/mould because of the drip wall.
@@tropicalfishhub You would be surprized to discover that some terrestrial molds can survive in water ,,, either way your tank looks impressive and the growth looks really healthy and mature,,,,!
