I love Roberta Flack! She's often left out when people start giving props to the soulful divas. She's right up there with Aretha, Patti, Gladys, Chaka...Legendary!
Wow this is so special Roberta is in incredible voice here, her best concert! When someone has their eyes closed when singing it's always extra emotional..
When I came in here before I mentioned her performance of “God Bless the Child”, but I MUST note how fantastic Ms. Flack’s “remix”/reimagination of The Bee Gee’s “To Love Somebody” really is. The way she rearranges that song is truly incredible. Now here in this upload we do not get the full performance (but I’ve seen it elsewhere, and I’ve seen her perform the song live on a completely different video), but her version of this song really makes you feel the mood and tone of those lyrics. The way I feel about this song is how I feel about Al Green reimagining “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart”. Both masterpieces. 💜💫✨🔥🤌🏾
I keep coming back to this concert of Ms. Flack in her younger years…before the First Take album and “The First Time Ever I Saw You Face”, which had already been released, had gained popularity. I just love how she commands the stage and engages with her band and her audience even then. And I love all of the songs she sings here BUT her interpretation of “God Bless the Child” is amazing! Absolutely 🔥 🤗❤️💫✨
First Take was released in 1969 - before this concert in 1971; however, "First Time Ever..." re-entered the charts after "Play Misty..." hit the theatres in 1972 .
@@Mozart2Muse Yes. I know when the album and song was originally released. Please read my post again. My post is stating that this concert is before the song and album had gained popularity, as it was due to the song being used in the movie Play Misty for Me, that the song and thus the album gained MORE popularity and made Ms. Flack a “household name”.
What an incredible find! Roberta Flack is absolutely incredible and has such a smooth voice! She even knows just when to turn it up and give you your money's worth! Included on this set is something for everybody! 0:01 "To Love Somebody", 5:05 "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", 9:34 Stevie Wonder's "Never Dreamed You'd Leave Me In Summer", 15:04 "Let It Be Me", 18:18 The 5th Dimension's "Save The Country", 21:04 "Ooh Child", 24:27 a Reprise of "Save The Country", 25:53 "God Bless The Child" and 30:05 a very funky version of "What's Goin' On", plus, after the credits at 34:29 a preview of her performance with Donny Hathaway (in full elsewhere on UA-cam) starting with their take on Aretha's "Baby I Love You." Loved everything but the latter - they should have left that to Aretha - but the rest of the "Double Exposure" concert with Donny is worth it!
The full Roberta Flack-Donny Hathaway performance at this concert (Double Exposure) can be found elsewhere on UA-cam. That was obviously just a preview. And the songs are much better than the one they chose to give us a taste of.
How can dare she dig into my soul with her outstanding vocals, instrumentals and acoustics from so far in the past?
