Need a crossover like they use on slot car tracks to switch but I bet that would have catastrophic results, haha! I tried a second race after this one and switched tracks but the 89 still won by a landslide. I think the gearing and speed control systems are just too different. Thanks for watching!
Great video Chris. I’m. Glad nothing fell off the tracks. Looking forward to RBP and friends. I had to email you 3 times before I got it right🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️ Hopefully I made the cut.
That was a fun race Chris. I love racing! The 89 mogul is just like Mario Kart, Gordon, Scotsman, Spencer, Connor, Catlin, Stephen, Kenji, Lightning McQueen from Cars, and Freddie. In the episode, Fearless Freddie, Freddie races Rheneas and Skarloey down the hill, but he cheats by taking old short cuts. Sir Handel remembers Freddie. That blooper made the mogul going backwards like Lightning's buddy Mater. Can't wait for the 90 and the base 3! You will love the 2023 volume 2 catalog that Lionel just released because it has fantastic new items! That's right!
Cool video. The train race was nicely done. The MTH Berkshire the engineer forgot to disable the governor. The 89 must had something added to the coal. Maybe one of your Lionel postwar steam locomotives with postwar passenger cars could keep up with the 89.
Now that was fun Chris! And I'm sure we're all guilty of falling into the temptation of wondering: "Gee, I wonder how fast it'll go?" I gave that up after I was doing a speed test on a MTH "General" 4-4-0. It was fast all right, it flew off the temporary dining room table layout and landed in a chair! Thank goodness it didn't land in the china cabinet, the wife would have killed me! Anyway, that's a nice aquisition, that Strasburg 89! That whistle's probably as close as you can get to the real thing, and the size versatility mirrors the real 2-6-0 Mogul types. Six-coupled engines like that were economical go-anywhere engines that lasted right up to the end of steam. The Boston & Maine used them into the 1950s on commuter trains and if I remember right were the last B&M steamers to go. Fun video! Thanks for posting! (PS: If the worst happened and your 89 "crashed and burned" on the floor at least you could run it up to Sean for a fix! As we know he got a crash course in fixing 89's. Poor guy! He must have the patience of a saint!)
So I recently got a Bachmann Baldwin 4-6-0 and it’s actually an amazing loco, I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a cheap but quality loco. Even the whistle sounds great!
Fun video I really enjoyed it! I agree the whistle sounds pretty close to the original. Thanks for giving Sean’s train depot a shout out. He deserves it for all the effort he put into correcting the derailment issues.
Lionel did a very good job on 89. I wish to see more company’s manufacture model tributes to the real iron in more scales. Looking forward to seeing #90 on your fun and enthusiastic channel soon hopefully!
That was a lot of fun! 765 is the closest thing I have to a "local excursion locomotive', so I was glad to hee her come out here. I saw Strasburg 89 in person just a couple of months ago. Wish somebody produced her in HO.
Another great video Chris. I thought for sure the comforter on the floor was going to catch something but all went well. Thank you for your hard work and efforts. 👍
@@RBPTrains the Lionel version does sound very close to the real one. 90 should be even better! Maybe when it finally comes in you should do a race between 89 & 90. That would be really awesome!
It is such a nice-looking engine. Would eventually love to get one being so close to Strasburg itself. But it will have to be a later purchase. Funny enough, thanks to my sons grandfather, he has 2 trainsets, and he isn't 2 yet.
This engine is the first Lionel Legacy product I have purchased, although mine has the Canadian National paint scheme. Ended up getting the last one from the Lionel's online store. Can't use all the bells and whistle on it as I dont have a Legacy control system, but the features I can use are still great!
I love the whistle on the 89, it sounds like a perfect match. I sure enjoy all your videos and this was an extra treat for sure. Thanks Chris, looking forward to your next video featuring "friends" trains.
I’m going to take a wild guess that Strasbourg 89 is going to win. Lionel did a fantastic job making the whistle sound very accurate. Better add number 90 to a new episode of History’s greatest mysteries on the history channel lol
Interesting idea, but I have a recommendation. So, I sometimes race my trains on a double track oval layout, and what I do is when the lead engine is completely clear of the second engine, I switch tracks, so the lead engine goes to the outer track, and the second engine goes to the inner track. I like to do this to see if the second engine really is capable of passing the lead, and Ive never had a derailment! (Ok, some close calls but we dont count those), Be that as it may, great video! Keep up the good work!
Hello Chris great video I know Strasburg RR very well I grew up inBurchrunville PA my aunt and uncle noe deceased many years ago but my cousin Fran lives in Auburn PA I love both 89 AND 90 BY the way 90 is getting a complete rebuild new boiler etc GOD BLESS CHRIS THANKS FOR SHARING
Another great video Chris. Like I've said before, my collection is all ho except for my dad's Lionel set from the 50's I always look forward to your videos.
For anyone that has one of the Lionel 2-6-0 moguls can I run it with my semi scale engines and rolling stock and will it look normal and not like a huge scale engine, I only do semi scale because it’s cheaper than full scale but I love this locomotive and I’m wondering if it’s small enough to run with semi scale rolling stock and look normal and not weird
Lionel's model of Strasburg #89 is a very nice digital era locomotive, looking very much like the real thing. You can tell that Lionel really put attention to detail in this locomotive where it's not a repaint of a Mogul type steam locomotive from another railroad. For example, they added the Canadian National-style number boards on the front (both the angled number boards and the "license plate" number board) as well as spoked pilot wheels. One of the only major inaccuracies on Lionel's model of Strasburg #89 is the shape of the steam chest. Lionel incorrectly used the saddle shape steam chests, which is inaccurate for the Strasburg/Canadian National Moguls, but is accurate on the Boston & Maine Moguls. The Strasburg/Canadian National Moguls have flared square steam chests. The original scale Mogul tooling Lionel had was based on the Boston & Maine Moguls and then all other scale Mogul models were derived from that. I guess changing the shape of the steam chest was too much for Lionel to do to make an accurate model of the Strasburg/Canadian National Moguls. Oh well, I guess you can say "close enough" compared to some of Lionel's other models that they made that were not accurate to their real counterparts, like their [infamous] model of Chicago & Northwestern Ten Wheeler #1385.
As others have stated (some in detail) how it wasn't a fair race though it was entertaining. I do feel that, in real life, NKP 765 would leave Strasburg 89 in the dust. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your next video.
i really do enjoy your videos, and some of your steam locos are just the last word inAWSOME!! i would love to have an MTH steamer in my collection, but they are slightly out of my ball park right now. maybe if im agood sweet little old man perhaps santa claus will bring me one sometime LOL!
Great video!!! I always associate the N&W 475 with the Strasburg Railroad since it has been pulling the excursions there every time I have been in Strasburg and made a stop at the railroad. Is the next race going to be streamliners?
That was interesting and even funny, Chris. Too bad about the unintended reverse start. I agree with some fans that the Berk had farther to go and (I'd say) it's a heavier loco. I like the staggered start suggestion or the loco's should have been started on the opposite tracks, so that #89 would have the longer distance. As you pointed out, the Lionel system doesn't have a speed limit per se. The use of the word 'highball' for fast is interesting, because a number of railfan video guys like to use the word 'booking' to describe a speeding train. I personally don't like this because it's kind of racist. It was a term used by the lookout for petty thieves who were stealing from convenience stores in the small neighbourhoods of major cities in the '50s. Usually many of these small gangs were young black teens and the lookout's warning was 'Let's get booking! The cops are coming!' The term came from 'bookitty-book' which was the sound their shoes made as they ran through an alley. At that time, many jr. high guys, me included, had taps put on the heels of their shoes. It was the 'cool' thing then!
great video! I actually just very recently bought the 1970 version lionel offered which leads me to a question of can you do a video just explaining all the components and controls that you would need for a layout to be compatible with legacy and other platforms? I am considering getting a Base 3 system but I am just starting out and am very lost as to where to start and what to have to run trains. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! I have been putting off a "how to" video for control systems as I have been waiting for the Base3 and the new DCS system to arrive. Hopefully later this year!

Hey Chris i think that is a good idea. am I right Chris? And do you know what i have the lionel really to play thomas but i need to make it g scale capable.
The Berkshire was never gonna win because it traveled more distance than the Strasberg. He needs a staggered start like in track and field.
Need a crossover like they use on slot car tracks to switch but I bet that would have catastrophic results, haha! I tried a second race after this one and switched tracks but the 89 still won by a landslide. I think the gearing and speed control systems are just too different. Thanks for watching!

I've actually ridden on the excursion train ran by the Strasburg RR, that whistle sounds so close to the real thing, I'm genuinely impressed with it.

Very creative video idea Chris! I’m genuinely considering picking one up now!
Thank you! This engine is totally worth it
Awesome race! I have it too! It’s a good engine! I was at Strasburg last month and the real one was running! 🚂
Always a good day when you see a upload notification from RBP Trains! Excellent video Chris, i enjoyed it!
Thank you @NotGavin!
Awesome video Chris! That little Strasburg 89 is quite a performer and that whistle is just awesome. I have one and I love it!!
I was glad I had a video of the real thing to compare! I am no whistle expert but this one sounds pretty close to the real thing. Thanks for watching!

As someone who has been in the strasburg 89 that whistle brings back memories
Love both trains! Fun race too!
I absolutely love SRC 89s PRR-3 chime. And I feel 611 should have raced it as 611 was on lease to Strasburg for a while.
611 would be a fun race! Might have to try that...
Yeah, the whistle sound great! Its a really nice engine!
Wonderful video, Chris! Great idea, beautifully executed. I am not so sur it was a fair race, lol, but I too love my little Mogul. Bill B.

Great video. Lots of fun. I do think Sean posted 2 or even 3 videos about his difficulties with 89. They are very good and helpful
You out did yourself yet again, Chris. Outstanding video!!!! Always look forward for a new video from you.
Thank you! Next video will be the layout showcase. Going to be great to see everyone's layouts!

Epic battle of steam. Interesting the MTH looked like it had more starting torque but you just cant beat a Lionel for speed, vintage or modern!
Yes!!! I’ve been waiting for the next video I hope you’ve been having an amazing time.
Totally awesome race RBP TRAINS, I knew that 89 was gonna win by a smoke stack 😊😊😊

Man! that whisel sound's good!
Awesome video Chris! Great Locomotive 😊
Love a good race! Would be fun to see if swapping lanes or swapping cars makes a difference. Or… both in reverse? 😂
Great video Chris. I think the speed cap on the mth engine as well as the mechanical age of each engine could have impacted the outcome.
I agree about the speed cap. I swapped tracks to give the Berk the inside track advantage but the 89 still won by a mile. Thanks for watching!
hey man! sorry to hear that, hope she is feeling better. like i said i was nt fussing just wondering what was up. well wishes fellow train man Gary.

Where did you get the gundam?

Great video!
Thank you!
How do we submit the videos or is it too late?
what do you think of the 2023 vol 2 xmas engine? are you planning on buying one?
Wow ❤ beautiful trains👍
I like seeing modern o scale trains run the way most old school o-27 trains run. At maximum speed with no real care for realism.
The Berkshire had another slight disadvantage, it had a different consist, meaning it might be hauling a heavier load than 89
Now for us total nerds, you can see which of them can take the longest to complete three laps without stalling out and I can see how many cups of coffee I can drink watching them do that. I wonder how long it would take either of them to go around the loop in the first speed step if they didn't stall out at any point?
