      Outstanding power on this engine. 100% agree this probably the best pulling steam engine lines made that has a single motor. I was able to pull 49 cars today- no issues - to lazy to get 10-12 more. Comb of Atlas, MTH, Lionel 36 & 40 ft box cars.

      @@daivdwalker2374 not everyone come with the elephant ears / smoke deflectors The 614 I just got did not. You should probably refer to the 2022 Vol 2 catalog as they described the features. The one Eric has, the 612, I didn’t know that Lionel provided them.

    Fun fact: C&O No. 614 (612's sister locomotive) was originally intended to receive a similar streamline package and paint scheme to pull the 'Chessie' passenger trains with a front cowling similar to that seen on C&O no. 490. However, the streamline package was removed from 614 prior to her leaving Lima in June 1948 since the 'Chessie' passenger service was cancelled by the C&O. This saved roughly 5,000 additional pounds on 614 and saved an additional 3,000 pounds on 614's tender. I found this information in the C&O Archives when researching my new book released this year on 614 in honor of her 75th anniversary (June 1948 - 2023): 'The Chesapeake & Ohio No. 614 Legacy: The Rise and Fall of an American Railroad Legend"

    Note:
    While today we mainly call 4-8-4's "Northern's" after the Northern Pacific which was the first railroad to operate 4-8-4's.
    During the era these engines ran they were usually not named Northern's with most railroads having their own names for the wheel arrangement.
    This ranged from the D&RGW and Santa Fe calling their 4-8-4's Mountains like their 4-8-2's to railroads like the NYC, SP, and C&O with names like "Niagara" "Golden State" and "Greenbrier" just to name a few.

    Gorgeous execution of color, detail, sound, and pulling power. Congrats to Lionel for what will probably be one of the most iconic locomotives they have ever produced. I would think that most purists would have bought this loco in one of its black liveried versions, so this unique fantasy item will most likely prove to be rare and much sought after in fifty or a hundred years hence.
    This unusual Greenbriar is a spectacular blend of the model maker's art, and the fantasy niche of our hobby, resplendent in its exotic make believe paint scheme that just screams "toy train".
    Thanks, Eric for another well done video. The pure joy you effused as you put this engine on the rails for the first time was truly heartwarming. Your enthusiasm for our hobby strikes a pure chord for all of us that love three rail O scale trains. See you at October York. ColoradoBear

That being said Lionel might finally produce a prototypical C&O Kanawha using MTH’s tooling, and I think the hooters would be perfect for that. Eric, I have sort of asked about this before. A locomotive like this is impresssive, but can recent Lionel products be considered as "Fine Scale"? There is something a little toy-like about them, or is that the charm of Lionel?

    • @Ericstrains
      @Ericstrains  Рік тому

      There are certainly other makers, such as 3rd Rail, who produce trains that have more fine detail than Lionel, but I would consider Lionel's upper end products to be reasonably finely detailed. The thing that probably makes it seem more toylike is that Lionel trains run on 3-rail track and also use larger-than-scale couplers. This is a tradition that goes back to the early 20th century. I personally like the 3-rail track and large couplers because it reminds to not take this hobby too seriously. It's about having fun...at least for me it is. Everybody's different.
