We were interested in how much a high-quality scan of a well-preserved Super 8 film can still be improved by using artificial intelligence: this Super 8 film from the 80s was digitized with the 1011 set from film-digital.com. A Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k was used for this. After automating the capture with Film-Digital's software script, we post-processed some sequences with Topaz Video AI. Mainly the stabilization and the "liquefaction" of the movements convinced us. Also the re-sharpening succeeded and some impurities and scratches could be restored well. For each scene, this tool was not suitable (for example, with counter-rotating movements), but for others we were able to get a lot out of it. Uns hat interessiert, wie sehr man eine qualitativ hochwertige Abtastung eines gut erhaltenen Super 8-Films noch durch den Einsatz künstlicher Intelligenz verbessern kann: dieser Super 8-Film aus den 80er Jahren wurde mit dem Set 1011 von film-digital.com digitalisiert. Dafür wurde eine Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k verwendet. Nachdem die Aufnahme mit dem Software-Skript von Film-Digital automatisiert bearbeitet wurde, haben wir einige Sequenzen mit Topaz Video AI nachbearbeitet. Hauptsächlich die Stabilisierung und die "Verflüssigung" der Bewegungen hat uns überzeugt. Auch das Nachschärfen gelang, und einige Verunreinigungen und Kratzer konnten gut restauriert werden. Für alle Szenen war dieses Tool zwar nicht geeignet), aber bei anderen konnten wir einiges heraus holen. Die mit Topaz bearbeiteten Szenen haben wir mit dem grünen "Topaz-Video AI"-Rechteck in der unteren linken Ecke markiert.

Nos interesaba saber hasta qué punto se puede mejorar un escaneado de alta calidad de una película Super 8 bien conservada utilizando inteligencia artificial: esta película Super 8 de los años 80 se digitalizó con el Set 1011 de film-digital.com. Para ello se utilizó una Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k. Después de editar automáticamente la grabación con el software script de Film-Digital, postprocesamos algunas secuencias con Topaz Video AI. Nos impresionó sobre todo la estabilización y la "licuefacción" de los movimientos. El reafilado también fue satisfactorio y se pudieron restaurar bien algunas impurezas. Esta herramienta no era adecuada para todas las escenas, pero pudimos sacar mucho partido de otras.

Nous avons voulu savoir dans quelle mesure il était possible d'améliorer un balayage de haute qualité d'un film Super 8 bien conservé grâce à l'utilisation de l'intelligence artificielle : ce film Super 8 des années 80 a été numérisé avec le kit 1011 de film-digital.com. Une Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k a été utilisée à cet effet. Après avoir automatisé l'enregistrement avec le script logiciel de Film-Digital, nous avons retravaillé certaines séquences avec Topaz Video AI. C'est surtout la stabilisation et la "liquéfaction" des mouvements qui nous ont convaincus. L'accentuation a également été réussie et certaines impuretés ont été bien restaurées. Eravamo interessati a capire quanto si può ancora migliorare una scansione di alta qualità di un film Super 8 ben conservato utilizzando l'intelligenza artificiale: questo film Super 8 degli anni '80 è stato digitalizzato con il set 1011 di film-digital.com. È stata utilizzata una Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k. Dopo che la registrazione è stata montata automaticamente con lo script software di Film-Digital, abbiamo post-processato alcune sequenze con Topaz Video AI. Siamo rimasti colpiti soprattutto dalla stabilizzazione e dalla "liquefazione" dei movimenti. Can you do more AI enhanced Super 8 videos, preferably 18 to 24 fps for a cinematic look? I wonder how an enhanced Super 8 footage that has been digitized and converted to 24 fps would look, especially the shutter angle. Also maybe try to use your own Super 8 footage if older footage is hard to find, that would be a more realistic use case for us indie filmmakers. Amazing results btw, I love the progress 🎉.
Fascinating. Did you change the original frame rate to eliminate the stuttering of 8mm film, or was that done through stabilization?
First, we digitized the Super 8 film with our system that we develop and sell (www.film-digital.com). Then we removed ghost images with our VirtualDub / AviSynth PlugIn and set the framerate of the file to 18 fps again (as the original film). Then we used Topaz Video AI to increase the framerate to 60 fps by interpolating frames. This is why the motion looks so fluent. Topaz did some stabilization as well. You see the difference between the sequences with the green "Topaz Video AI" mark and the sequences without that mark, that have not been edited with Topaz.
@@film-digital2129 Thanks for the reply. So the reason why it looked stuttering is because it was originally shot at 18fps? I'm looking at buying my first film camera. Leaning towards 16mm, but the 8mm camera prices are attractive.
@@MotionPictureTrips Yes, the 18 fps are the reason why Super 8 looks stuttering ...
@@film-digital2129 That makes sense. I've always wondered why a lot of 8mm films looked that way. Not sure why film-makers would use 18fps when you could film at 24 or more

I've used Topaz Video Enhance AI product but haven't achieved results like this.
The result always depends on how good the digitizations are. You can see in the sequences not marked with "Topaz Video AI" how the unedited footage looks like. It is quite good already. On the other hand, Topaz seem to have made some progress in the recent version ... but there are always sequences that work well and other that don´t ...
