Appreciate that pop culture is exposing people to good music and getting them to enjoy it instead of getting pissed at them. Do you listen to any really old bands? How would you feel if a 60 year old man said to you, "I've been a fan of them since the 70's! I hate you because you're young and listen to it too!"
Like lots of other folks, I heard it on television (from another room as someone else mentioned). It's been haunting me for days and I tried searching by the lyrics I heard. Took me to the wrong place at first, but I finally got here! I LOVE this song, her voice, and the spare use of instruments.
This song just brings to mind the beginning of a thriller/murder movie. Opening with some children playing happily, no sound just the music. Then seeing an older man driving in an old pick up down a dirt road. Going back to the children playing near a body of water (slow moving or still) and a ball falls into said water and a body floats to the surface, rolling to show the face of either a young boy (9 or 10) or a young lady (late teens to mid 20's). I love music like THIS!
This song was is powerful and fit the "Last Resort" commercial so well! I was so excited when the song came on! I thought to myself, "I know this song!" Such a strong and powerful voice, with great pitch control!

+Cauf E. Bean Check out "Negro Spirituals". Sounds very similar to this. I hear ya, man. These are surprisingly difficult genres to navigate. Not sure how you found this, but I found as a haunting bluegrass/gospel mix, by searching "haunting bluegrass". There seems to be a lot here, more than I have ever been able to find. Might try some of the old time Appalachian fiddlers. Kind of a trade-off with bluegrass, though. The darker the melody, more often than not, the more cynical the lyrics get. Not always.
